Review from Yuko A.
I always stop in to Faces, no matter how old I get....Its great for everyone from little kids, college grads, and newly weds. They have a women's clothes section which has everything from jeans, socks, and t-shirts and usually has some type of sale going on. They have a couple sunglasses stands, a jewelry section, quite a large stationary/cards section in the back, and a joke/puzzle area where there are funny/raunchy t-shirts, puzzles, random games....(some of the stuff reminds me of the stuff at A to Z)
Thats just the 2nd floor, once you go downstairs walk into furniture haven....I haven't ever bought any of the furniture but I can only imagine they are pretty popular since people are always looking at the items, and Noho's a big college town... In the back they have a little poster room where there are big/small/medium sized music, scenery, movie, and athlete posters...
Yes, some of the things are a little pricey, but it always fun to walk in Faces, you never know what you may find... -

The kind of store that makes me smile no matter what. Very kitschy, which I love (cupcake dental floss!) and stuff that lets you be fun while also getting what you need. What i got- a yeti winter hat and an ice cream cone shower cap. of course it costs a bit more to be so kitschy, but thats always the case. tons of greeting cards, some clothes and shoes, bags, posters, tons of whimsical stuff for anyone and everyone.

Need a voodoo doll for that special someone in your life? How about a wallet that looks like raw bacon? No ... well, do you need a t-shirt with a pithy saying? FACES is the place to go. I love this store so much. I always end up buying something for someone here and never regret. Prices are good to moderate for this kind of unnecessary stuff that you can find in a college town, but it's fun. They just opened an Urban Outfitters in Noho ... you can find the same stuff for lower at Faces (don't avoid because of the neon :)

Hands-down my favorite store in Western MA. I love this place - I mean I LOVE this place. So cute and local. It's like Ikea meets Urban Outfitters meets local.
Everytime I am in North Hampton (usually once a year) I make a point in stopping here and sure enough - that means spending money. They have really cute finds you can't get anywhere else. I'm not into the clothes - they are a little to summer dress/hippy for me, but the stuff for your house - I am obsessed with. This time around I got an awesome shark oven mitt because I am obsessed with sharks. I also cute a cute magnet, and a cat picture with a frame, and a pair of zebra print sun glasses with a leopard print case. They staff is friendly and the place is clean and well lit. It's huge though - and there are other fun things like kids' toys and activity kits, kitchen supplies, hats, cards for any occasion, lots of things for your house, socks, lamps, vases, etc. If I had a bigger house I would buy more. Make sure you come here if you visit the area - you won't be disappointed. -
Review from Andrea B.
Faces is definitely a less expensive Urban Outfitters with much more variety. The clothes they sell here are brightly colored and trendy. I particularly like shopping for summer clothes and sandals here, but I have also bought a pair of rain boots and some scarves here as well. The store is two floors and in addition to the clothing, it is full of interesting knickknacks and unusual items to adorn your apartment or dorm room. I've never purchased anything besides clothes or shoes here, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy browsing through all the oddities that Faces has to offer. Faces would be a perfect place to buy Christmas gifts, as you can probably find something here to please anyone on your list.

Astoria, NY
Faces, a sort of indy Urban Outfitters minus the hipster sheen, plus an insane assortment of fuzzy hats.
That by the way makes it infinitely better than Urban Outfitters. From loads of entertaining knicknacks, to the prerequisite clothing selection, and back to that epic array of hats, this place just oozes fun and funk.
I'm glad a place like this can thrive. Thank god for college towns. And thank god for unicorn hats. -
Review from Megan R.
This store reminds me of an underground, hippy type of Urban Outfitters, with brighter colors, cheaper prices, and funnier gag gifts.
Two floors of everything a college kid would want in his or her dorm, Faces is one of the must-have shopping experiences in Northampton.
Try on a million fuzzy animal hats, or face-test hundreds of sunglasses. There are scarves and boots, eclectic jewelry, and all sorts of books. Downstairs you can find home and kitchen decor. There are so many things to look at, and at decent prices, you will usually pick up more than you planned.
Faces is also one of the best places for gifts.Listed in: On The Road . . .

This store is cool! I mean I love going here, but I just never buy anything since it's pretty pricey and I can live w/o whatever I want to buy. It's nice to just go in and browse around with friends. TOo bad they changed the carpet in the elevator..it looked really cool with it's random splashes of paint!
They have such a variety of stuff, like bath stuff, to bar tending stuff, to clothes...to posters...really random. -

Two interesting ways Faces has changed my life:
Back in 2000, my parents took me back-to-school shopping at Faces. Our budget was very small ($100, I believe.) so while I didn't find much (I bought a black duster that I wore for YEARS before I threw it out because an old boyfriend hated it. STUPIDEST IDEA EVER, but whatever...), I did hear a really interesting CD that was playing the entire time I shopped.
Some of the songs sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place them. I asked a salesgirl who told me they were playing "Changesbowie" on a loop. I went out and bought the CD that same day, and it began a long love affair with David Bowie. :D
Also, that same day I fell in love with an amazing chair they had in the bottom floor. It was made of black and leopard print fabric and it was shaped like a HIGH HEELED SHOE. 16 year old me thought that was the coolest thing ever and I HAD to have it...but it cost $350...out of my budget.
So I went back home and immediately got a job and started a savings account. All for that chair!
And I never got it :( Once I had the money saved, Faces stopped selling the chair.

Onto a more actual "review", I love Faces. I always have and likely always will. It is the one store I never leave Northampton without stopping in, and often times I make the hour plus drive JUST to go there.
I'm a big fan of their June dress sale (25 to 50% off for the entire month!), sunglasses (you can always find a cool pair), eco-friendly stuff, kitchenware....
Oh, hell. I just love everything. Sure, a lot of it is kitschy (things like bacon flavored gum and novelty bandaids, bumper stickers, etc.) but most of it is amazing.
It's the best place ever to get a last minute gift for a friend. Odds are you can find something for just about everyone here. -

Face's is a must stop when in downtown Noho.
Lots of stuff to check out, they keep in season so whatever your in need of for clothes and outerwear will be there. Lots of joke type gifts and an amazing home and decor section in the lower level. Regular prices are not on the cheap, but they have good sales.
i would be surprised if you couldnt find a gift for almost anyone here. -

Who needs a social life when you can come here to cheer yourself up? I'm just saying, if thousands of knick knacks can't cheer a Smithie up, you're just gonna have to get out of the lab more often. Won't kill you, you know.
Four stars for the best window displays in Northampton. -
Review from Steph L.

Instead of "Faces" I would like to rename this store "Everything You Want And Nothing You Need Except Rainboots."
These kinds of stores are right up my alley! Asian paper lanterns, prayer flags from Nepal, muckaluck slippers, candles, toaster cut-outs in the shape of God's Baby Mama Mary, rubber ducks, a whole wall of rainboots (we don't have rain in California so I found them extremely novel and entertaining) and a bunch of other stuff that would make great gifts for Friends Who Like Random Things.
Extra star for being green, after you purchase something if you don't take a plastic shopping bag they enter your name into a drawing for a gift certificate. Cool. -

I like Faces a lot even though a great deal of the stuff they sell is pretty pointless and a waste of money...little toys and plastic things.
The downstairs is where the more serious items are such as furniture, kitchen accessories, and things to decorate apartments. They have a pretty nice poster area.
This store is just fun to wander through and look at all the random things for sale.
Definitely check it out if you're in town. -
Review from Bridget M.
Santa Monica, CA
It's a hipster store sort of like Newbury comics, only with no cds, and better just-about-everything-else. It runs the gamut from clothing, books, home decor, cards, and general random kitschy hipster stuff. I wish there was a comparable store in Boston.
The staff was really friendly.
they had one of those great cigarette/art machines out front, which I love, however it was a little more expensive than most that I've encountered. I will totally come back here when I go back to Northhampton -

Portland, ME
It's a cute place with fun knick-knacks and real usable items too. They have clothes, shoes, and home furnishing items. It is like a touch of Spencers/Newbury comics that mixxed in with a Home Goods. It has humour, cutesy items but it's useable.
My favorite were all the ADORABLE kitchen tools shaped like animals. Like a Bumble Bee shaped dish brush. And an elephant shaped dish brush, I wanted everything. A giraffe toilet bowl scrub. LOVE IT.
Some of the stuff is a little pricey though. The dish brush was like $10-12 bucks. -
Review from Danielle F.
West Springfield, MA
There's a lot of pros and cons about this place. I've been a handful of times.
This is a great place for novelty books for gifts. I've had a lot of luck in that department. The greeting card section is enormous and most of them are really beautiful. I've found it easy to spend money at Faces every time I go because I always find something that a friend would love.
It's always very crowded and people are always stopping short and just wandering because there's just so much to look at. So on a busy day, it's pretty difficult to get around without getting knocked into repeatedly.
As for the cons, I find myself getting more and more annoyed every time I visit. I'm really, really tired of the whole go-green-indie-hipster-beatnik trend. Everyone in Northampton looks exactly the same and I notice myself constantly rolling my eyes.
I don't want it to be such a hassle to get a BAG. I bought five books and three boxes of incense, I'd like a bag. Yes, even with handles...I won't litter and ruin the planet with this bag, I promise.
Augh, anyway...
Fun store for novelty items and gifts. The household items I've just found to be really freshman year dorm-y but they've got some nice frames. -
Review from Kate S.
Boston, MA
This place is pure fun. I can remember when I was in college, coming here and thinking it was pricey. But now that I live in Boston, my most recent visit to Faces had me double and triple checking price tags because it seemed so cheap!
I could spend hours in here looking at all the funny t-shirts, knick-knacks, and great home decor items downstairs. -
Review from Leslie A.

I love you, Faces, but please make a web store for those who live far away from you.
Until recently, I had lived near Northampton and frequented this place as much as possible (financially, that is). Faces has an exquisite array of the unique, kitschy and just plain cool. They have fragrances, socks, ladies' clothing, bags, toys and games, excellent gift choices, stationery... And that's just the first level. Go downstairs and you have a monument of choices with which to decorate your home. I've always come out of that place feeling like a queen because of some amazing deal I found or a beautiful skirt that can be a dress or some bicycle-print socks.
Faces, YOU ARE ME. I AM YOU. WE ARE OF LIKE MIND. I feel as though Faces is a nexus where my mind meets me on the other side of a time paradox and I have to purchase things to remember that this place is tangible. -

The poor man's Urban Outfitters. To put it in more PC terms, it's basically the only place you can go shopping in Northampton and find an abundant variety of pseudo(aka trying-to-be)-hip clothes, art, home decor stuff, and gag gifts.
I will say this: they have a pretty rad selection for sunglasses and cards. -
Review from Matthew Z.
Salt Lake City, UT
I give this place 2 out of three stars because every once in a while, they have something worth buying, like a birthday card or a wallet.
I used to live on main street in Northampton, and I was always drawn in by their interesting displays, which seem to change weekly. I suppose that's nice. But the store itself isn't that amazing. It's a novelty shop, filled with toys and silly tee shirts. The down stairs has some expensive decorating/dining/ furniture items, as well as frames. I just was never impressed by Faces. -

Imagine something akin to a giant Spencer's and home furnishings store, and you've got Faces.
Tons and tons of kitchy gifts - I like stopping here when I'm in town to see if anything calls to me for a gift for anyone. Bacon band aids, grow-a-panda... you get the idea.
Clothes - they're okay, easily found elsewhere. The clearance section is where I usually go, though.
Downstairs has a ton of home decor and furniture. They're great of unusual ideas, but I usually pass on buying anything. They could be a little less, price-wise.
Every time I go, I like it, but a little less than the time before. Maybe the magic is fading? This is also a great place to take visitors for the 'woah, there's a ton of cool stuff here' factor. -

Danbury, CT
An essential place to go to when in Northampton.
Think of Newbury Comics meets Urban Outfitters.
Some of the things in the store is pure junk, but fun to look at nonetheless. It seems like they had a bunch of stuff and didn't know where to put it, so they dumped them into a building and called it Faces. I think it closes early which is probably the only downfall, but there's something for everyone. haha, I once bought my friend "slut, angel" lip gloss...so that gives you an idea of what's in there. They also sell furniture, lighting, and art in the downstairs area. It's a pretty eclectic store that shouldn't be missed. -
Review from Alexandra B.
New York, NY
This place is like Claire's for Smithies: When you're young, it's amazing, and you want nothing more than to deck out your entire life in head to toe merchandise, but by senior year you're kind of unimpressed. I really like the home decor, and it's a good place to grab some clothes when you're looking for something specific, but the hipster-chick thing get tired after a while. All in all, it's a great store, and they have some witty finds, but it's not heaven.

Holyoke, MA
This store combines all of the reasons that certain stores like Spencer's, Urban Outfitters, and H&M are fun to go into: variety of stuff for sale, unique items, and a hip vibe. Except Faces is not a huge chain company, it's a local business! I'm always happy to go into this store because it seems like I'm going to a fun place where the employees are having fun (and enjoy their jobs), there are always cool new things to play with and buy, and the prices are fair. The front display is always something cool and fun--sometimes it's even motorized and crazy (Halloween always yields amazing displays). I hope this store stays in business forever.

Review from J. T.
West Hartford, CT
I always find something cool/amusing/off-beat when I visit Faces. You might say its similar to Urban Outfitters, except it's slightly less pricey and definitely less pretentious. That being sad, the prices aren't cheap, but a splurge here every so often won't break the bank. There are two floors of different odds and ends, ranging from a large collection of greeting cards, apparel, gag-type gifts, etc. The bottom floor is mostly home decor related items, which remains true to the off-beat vibe of Faces. The staff is very friendly and the store is always organized and neat (I'm a big fan of organization). A visit here on average lasts at least 30 minutes for me. It's always a must when I'm in the Noho area.

What an awesome store. You can walk the circuit over and over and still find stuff you didn't see. Upstairs, fun clothes and funny gifts, stationery and posters. Downstairs, homewares, artwork and other goodies. They have all kinds of quirky items that can appeal to the twenty-something crowd, and cool canvas handbags. If I'm out in the area again, I'll look forward to popping in to see what new things they've got in store.
I have these adorable little ceramic owl salt and pepper shakers I got there. You could call them tacky, but I love them and would have no idea where else to find them. Go to Faces and make sure you've got plenty of money in the meter! -

This store was first of the many cool places I discovered in Northampton. Really cool place with a lot of fun things to flip through. I will agree with some of the other reviewers though, it is a little pricey so I only bought a few things from them. But, if I am in the area, I ALWAYS drop by to check out what new fun things they have. It is a nice place to get gifts!

Review from Serey A.
Haverhill, MA
A few weeks after I posted my review on Faces store in Northampton, I got an email from its owner thanking me for my review of their store. I really did appreciate his message since it tells me (as a customer) that owners & management listen to what their customers have to say about their stores and it also means that they would strive to please their customers by this interaction. Nothing beats like a personal email from the owner themselves rather than the corporate letters that we usually get which for me is more impersonal and insincere.
I believe that the more a proprietor is in tune with its customers' needs and listen to what they have to say, it builds for a successful business.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Faces is one of those places you have to go to if you are in Northampton. Everyone that knows this town will ask you if you went Faces while you were in town. Eye candy -- that really describes the store. The T-shirts are the funniest I have ever seen anywhere! I got my sister-in-law a Trailer Trash Barbie here. What a tramp! ( no really, I mean the doll). The downstairs has some really neat stuff for decorating. College students love it here. Trendy clothes, smart ass stationary, political humor, gag gifts, stuffed animals, funny books, flying pigs, Nunzilla, this place has everything except milk shakes. A Fun visit.

Coolest store you can imagine. I don't even buy anything half the time I go to Faces but it's a MUST to just go and hang out and check out the stuff, and there's always new stuff. Perfect for finding little quirky gifts for people who are tough to shop for, and also great for stocking stuffers and nicknacks. You can't go to Northampton without taking at least a little look! The front window is always a hoot, too.

Burlingame, CA
It's a totally cute place to wander into and browse for hours. Faces sells all sorts of unique items that are amusing, cute, or simply interesting. Its merchandise ranges from sunglasses to books to plants to greeting cards to posters to furniture. It's also one of the few stores in Northampton to open later than 5pm (yeah, I know...), which definitely makes it deserving of 4 stars at the very LEAST. At times some of its items can be overpriced, but other than that, it's fantastic.

Indie Urban Outfitters. It's cute and fun to browse around in, but I don't think I've bought anything but cards here. I find it really overpriced (like UO) for the quality.

I can spend some time here! There is nothing you need here but can spend hours looking at the random stuff they have here. I really like the clothes and jewelry and could decorate my entire house with stuff from the housewares section. The card section is really neat. They have a great selection that includes local artists work as well. They have a neat eco section which I really enjoy. It is a nice place to go to with friends. I am actually writing this with my laptop on top of a lap desk I got there. Very fun place.

Now it's not that I buy a ton of stuff from here, because as amusing as it all is, I would spend A LOT of money if I didn't show some self restraint. That being said, I definitely spend way more time here than is probably necessary when I am in Northampton. On more than one occasion, I have carried 2 or 3 things around the store only to finally decide to pass on the purchase before hitting the register. But really, I just have so much fun when I'm in there. And no matter how hard I try, I have left with some random things I didn't need....one thing in particular being a shirt with a picture of 3 gnomes on it that says "Rollin' With My Gnomies." Did I honestly need that? No. But do I love it? Absolutely.
