Since my first visit to El Sobrante Optometry back in 2009 I'm sure I will never have to find a new place to go to for vision care. Whether you need sunglasses or prescription glasses this is the place you need to go to.
Dr. Hsieh is an amazing doctor, very kind and very knowledgeable.The staff is as courteous and outgoing as ever and the selection of product is unparalleled. Mr. Vo's attention to detail is unprecedented, he can quickly pick out several different frames that will look perfect for you.
There's a real sense of ease when looking for a new set of glasses since each of the staff members are amazing at finding a selection of frames that fit your shape, style and of course price range. You will definitely find something you like.

Since I recently turned 40, I decided that I need to start taking care of myself and actually make USE of the great benefits I am lucky enough to have available to me (thanks job!).
So I had my first official eye exam. I was a total newbie to the whole process. But I saw the reviews here on Yelp for El Sob Opt, and choose them.
For my first experience I was very happy. They have extended hours (for me that means after 6 on some days which is great cause I can go after work). They explained EVERYTHING they were doing and why. Each person had a great manner about them and easy to talk to. I had some quirky little issues with my eyes for the last couple years that I never got checked out because of lack of previous vision insurance, so when I asked all my questions the Doc was really good at giving me explanations for why those problems were occuring.
Also, they gave a pretty good explanation of my insurance and what it covered. Which was great cause I was a little confused by it. I really am glad I went with them for my first experience into the 4-eyed world ....since I now need to were glasses for the first time in my life.
I love their El Sobrante location, but they let me know that they are going to be moving and changing their name in the next few weeks. But I really did like them, so if they are moving to Pinole... then Pinole I will go. Its just a couple extra minutes. No biggie.

WOW! I must of touched a nerve, I merely indicated that your exam prices were extermely high for such a bedroom community as EL Sobrante....sometimes conveinence isn't worth the price.

I have some sort of cloudy haze to both of my eyes, so I wanted to get them checked out. I saw the ad for El Sobrante Optometry in the Contra Costa Marketplace magazine and decided to go in and check out my cloudy eyes. What caught my eyes was Dr. Park Hsieh - he's a total stud! He looks young, but then again he's asian so it might make his age gracefully =). I got examined and had several pictures taken. He told me that I had congential glaucoma. He told me not to freak out because I had them since birth. He will keep my photos on file to see if there are any changes in the future. Whew! My vision also decreased due to pregnancy, so I had to get glasses for night-time driving and computer use. They have a wide selection of brand names to choose from. I must have tried on 10 different pairs to see which one fit me best. I ended up getting a pair of the Prada ones with gold gems lining the temporal frame since most of the glasses were too close to my face and it irritated my eyes because my long lashes would make them itch. I was pleasantly surprised to find the staff highly knowledgeable with all of my insurance and general questions. Everyone there is super friendly! Can't wait to go back since I'm overdue for my 2-year check up. Very clean facility and nicely decorated! Go check our Dr. Hsieh if you have eye problems or need an eye (candy) exam.

I wish they would be more accountable for their actions, or their lab's actions...Lets start from the beginning.. I used my VSP to get an exam and got a new pair of glasses with my new RX.
I received my glasses a few weeks later and the RX appeared to be distorted and blurry to a point where I have to squint my right eye a little just to clear up my vision.
I brought this to their attention several times and told them that my old pair of glasses with old prescription seemed clearer then the one they prescribed...they just said that's its probably my eyes "adjusting" to the new prescription... I'm no eye doctor, so I took their word for it...
A year later I get my eye exam again somewhere in LA., the doctor wanted to compare the new results to my prescription and checked out the glasses I got from El Sobrante Optometry. He mentioned that the prescription on the glasses appear to be spot on, but one of the lenses were rotated WAY off he says and thats probably why its not clear for me.
To summarize it all, I took El Sobrante Optometry's word that my eyes would adjust to the prescription..Found out later the lens was installed incorrectly... Now out of warranty because I was told "everything was ok and my eyes needed to adjust"
Still a clean shop though, just a bad experience this time because i'm a customer that got the short end of the stick for doing nothing wrong...

I could not have asked for a better experience regarding my eye exam and getting my contact lenses. Dr. Hsieh is very dedicated and thorough. He takes the time to explain the details of exams and results and makes you feel comfortable. I was scared to wear contacts since i've always been wearing glasses so i wasn't expected that Aidan made the fitting easy, fast and comfortable.

bad customer service first made us an appointment when they office is close and I saw dr and his assistant inside but they totally ignored me standing by the door for few minutes seems like I don't exist and then getting a new pair of glasses with new the lady at the frontdesk said have to wait for few days coz to be eligible again come in REALLY!!! Called my insurance they said I'm eligible now such a liar or they don't want tk take any services. Just let your clients know a head of time if you guys are not accepting or can't accommodate clients anymore. RUDE!!!! Can't refer you guys anymore.

I bought my first pair of glasses from them late last year. The experience was much better than I could have asked for. Since it was my first pair, I didn't really know what I wanted. Mr. Vo knew what frames looked good on me and were within my price range just by looking at me. The staff there is super professional, kind, and passionate about what they do. Their quality of work is truly top notch. I will definitely be going to them again in the future.

I came into El Sobrante Optometry not expecting much. I've seen several other optometrists in the past and it was always one of those things you just had to do. You never really look forward to it, but you get your eyes checked because you need to be pro-active and stay healthy.
The staff at El Sobrante Optometry were very helpful. It's very hard not to feel comfortable there. Dr Park Hsieh was very informative during the tests. Unlike many doctors he kept informing me what he was checking for, what he was doing and what he was seeing. I went in an uninformed patient not knowing what to expect and came out well informed and aware.
I then proceeded to purchase some glasses. Aidan was extremely helpful and patient with me. Aidan is the best! he really knows which frames fit your face. I didn't know heads or tails when it came to how glasses fit, but he was such an expert. He also ordered new ear pads for my old glasses. He's a professional through and through. I stumbled across El Sobrante Optometry by pure chance and I'm happy that I did. My friend asked me to pick up his prescription sunglasses for him. As I entered, I couldn't help but notice the comfy interior design and the friendly smile of the receptionist. I decided to ask them if they had any free appointments and luckily they said I could see Dr. Hsieh later that afternoon.
Dr. Hsieh knows what he's talking about and happily answered all of my questions. He also tends to use the very latest in technology and tries to educate you throughout the exam. The rest of the staff was also really nice and they help me pick out the perfect frames again and again. I always get compliments on my frames and I have Aiden to thank.

First of all let me say I did not dump my current optometrist and eyeglass shop. My insurance changed and El Sobrante Optometry came up on the list as a provider.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! Dr. Hsieh (pronounced Shay) is amazing, very through and clearly up to date with the latest in technology for eye exams and preventative treatments.
NOW! everyone knows I'm a Material Girl in a Material World and love good quality things. I have been rocking glasses since I was 4 years old and I must say the selection was not always great, I had to make the best of it but not here people!
The staff at ESO has made it their mission to provide 4 eyed folks, like myself, with the latest, sexiest hottest frames in the game. Damn near every frame in the store is high end designer quality but there are very sensible ones to choose from, as well. Many of your favorite designers have frames and shades you didn't even know about. You will find them at ESO.
The staff is very polite, informative and thoughtful when assisting you with insurance, frame selection and recommendations on proper eye care.

I decided to come to El Sobrante Optometry because I moved and my old optometrist was out of the area. Whenever I see a business with 4 1/2 - 5 stars and it's in my neighborhood I always have high expectations.
My experience here was just "ok". Dr. Hsieh did my exam, he explained everything he was doing while he was doing it. When it was time for me to pick out my glasses, I found the customer service to be lacking. This may have been in part to the fact that I had a late weekday appt. They have a large selection of glasses so It took me a while to narrow down my choices. While the staff wasn't flat out rude, it was obvious they were ready to go. The office should factor in the amount of time it takes for an exam and glasses selection and schedule appointments accordingly. No one likes to feel rushed when making a purchase...let alone an expensive one.
When I came to pick up my glasses a week later, the front desk receptionist handed them to me and said "Are they ok or do you need adjustments?" That hit me as a strange question since I've NEVER picked up new glasses without having them adjusted. I put the glasses on and of course...they needed adjustments. She told me it would be a few minutes. 30 minutes later, I asked if she knew how much longer it would be. Her response "it shouldn't be too much longer". By the time I finally had my adjustments done I had been waiting 40 minutes. I understand it was Sat. and the office was busy. Had I been informed that there was going to be such a long wait, I would have willingly came back at a less busy time.
After a couple of weeks of wearing my glasses I started to get headaches. I have a light prescription (primarily for for reading and night driving) so I figured my eyes just needed to get adjusted to them. After another 2 weeks of wearing them and getting headaches I made a return appt. Dr. Hsieh did the exam again and the prescription was basically the same as before. His only suggestion was to continue to wear the glasses. When I asked how long it would take for my eyes to get adjusted, he really didn't have a straight answer. So I basically walked out of the office with a pair of useless glasses. I wore the glasses for another week and gave up.
Before I left, Dr. Hsieh suggested I obtain my old prescription and bring it back to him for comparison. Honestly, I've spent entirely too much time dealing with these glasses and I'm over it. This rating is for the super friendly staff as I did not have the pleasure of getting eye examination from Dr. Hsieh. I have been going to a different optometrist but was a bit turned off by the staff there, so I gave El Sobrante Optometry a try.
I am very glad I went there! Despite the fact that I was there pretty close to their closing time, the guy who works there (I think his name was Aiden?) took the time to show me many many affordable and cute frames. He made sure that we stayed under my budget and was very very patient while I took a long time choosing a frame. I have always hated shopping for frames, but he made the experience much better. Also, AIden and Dr. Hsieh made sure that my prescription was accurate and I didn't even have the eye exam there. Dr. Hsieh and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional at what they do best. Always very accommodating, thorough and informative.
ESO also has a large selection of contact lenses and frames to suite anyone's budget and needs.
Last but not least, I still at disbelief that some douchebag (below me) signed up on yelp just to leave a negative comment about ESO, simply because ESO would not disclose the information of their merchandise.
Yo cheapskate, If they don't want to give you the model #, then just leave and go do your own research on the model #.
But seriously tho? Why would any business let you in on their sources? Why don't you let us in on how you make your $$$? Don't you know a business need to profit in order to stay in business? wait.. obviously you are cheap and too cheap to know how a business work. grow up! -

I've always assumed I don't need glasses, thus I don't need an eye exam. Was I EVER wrong! I was greeted by Daisy and Aidan, and immediately I felt welcome. I spoke briefly with them, made an appointment, and came back to see Dr. Hsieh a few days later.
Although I've never had an eye exam, it felt comforting to go to a clean facility with knowledgeable staff. The exam room was reassuring, as all of the equipment was spotless and new. Dr. Hsieh was friendly, confident, and very detail-oriented - like me! He didn't stop talking while putting the exam instruments to use, and was narrating facts about the human eye to me which I found very comforting. Sorta like those headphones that read off facts while you're looking at gorillas at the zoo. I trusted his measurement and examination abilities as he fully calibrated my vision to perfection!
After I received my prescription, Aidan and Daisy helped me enjoy the experience of something I previously considered only for nerds - choosing a pair of glasses. I almost wanted to play "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" but I felt it'd be a bit inappropriate since we weren't shopping for dresses so I just played it in my head. They were patient throughout the process (and my indecisiveness) and eventually, after about 15 different pairs I ended up with a stunning pair of Modo 'hand made' glasses. They also didn't mind that I was distracted for about 10 minutes at the safety lock unlocking mechanism for the display cases.
This place has the best of both worlds: friendly, fun service with a doctor who really knows his stuff yet is charming and professional. After a month, I can't go anywhere without these glasses. I've never realized the details I've been missing in life until my experience at El Sobrante Optometry. Now I won't be running into poles while talking to co-workers on the way to lunch in downtown SF.

This is by far the best optometrist in the area. He was very informative and thorough. I have been wearing glasses since I was 6 I have never had such a great experience. All of the staff is friendly and helpful from the moment you walk in the door. Aiden was so awesome in helping me pick out the best frames that fit my personality and needs! I love, love, love my new glasses.

I love this place. The staff is very friendly and are not pushy when picking out frames. IT's almost as though they look forward to getting people who like to take their time in choosing the right frame.
I have a really big fear of eye-balls. no joke. I don't even attempt to mess with the contact lenses cause I freak out at the thought of my eyeball being touched. During a test where there is some sort of object that gets really close to eye..almost touching it.. I began to freak out and prolonged the test for ten minutes. Yet the Doctor was so patient with me. He didn't get frustrated or flustered. He just kept trying to finish the procedure.
I love my glasses. I get compliments on them all the time. They are not super flashy or glittery with large symbols on them. Simple, lightweight, comfy and compliment the shape of my face.

Cross referencing my insurance with Best of the Bay winners and Yelp favorites brought me to El Sobrante Optometry. I am THRILLED!
Dr. Hsieh was patient and answered ALL my questions. He made sure I was completely happy with my contact lens fit and able to work with multifocal contacts.
My time with Adrian, Frame Stylist Extraordinaire, was fantastic. Thank goodness for his "Selective Perfectionism"! Stocking up, I purchased two sets of frames - one his choice and one mine. Everyone loves Adrian's Choice. I am so glad I listened to him!
Zayda & Virginia are always welcoming and friendly, making sure all the details are handled properly. The office is comfortable and I never had to wait long.

Thank you ESO for letting me know over and over again that it was purely my own misunderstanding and not the staff's responsibility at all. Way to go. You ever think that maybe it might actually be the staff? With all the rave reviews, I understand how that may be hard to realize. Another 1 star for poor customer service... Can you believe that through all of this, they sent me a bill saying I still owed $25??? This is the first I or my insurance company have seen this!!! My insurance company, out of THEIR own kindness and superb customer service, sent me a check for the amount so that I may pay the balance directly.

Dr. Park Hsieh is a really nice guy who takes the time to talk to the patient and explain things thoroghly. I have also seen one of the associate doctors and she was also very nice and good with my children.

Had a great experience! Dr. Hseih was very thorough with his examination. The technlogy used at this office is modern and he conducted eye tests that I hadn't had done before. He was able to detect early signs of cataracts and advised me on how to prevent worsening of the condition. My son may be at risk for glaucioma and I asked him some questions about glaucoma. He was more than willing to explain what glaucoma is, pulled p a diagram of an eye on his computer and talked to me about it. I asked Zeta to help me pick out a frame and she pulled out about 15 frames for me to try on and helped me select the perfect one. For once I'm gonna love my frames :-) They are pricey but in fairness she did ask how much I was willing to spend and I told her that didn't matter as much as being happy with my frames.

I BELIEVE that this business has changed hands, and the previous reviews are for the previous owner(s). Their prices are WAY out of line, they are unclear regarding the prices until it comes time to pay, and customer service is lacking. Last month (January), I received a bill for glasses I paid for six months earlier! This was not an insurance purchase, and it was my understanding that the price quoted, and the price I paid, was the payment in full for the glasses when I left with them (six months earlier). THEN they decide they under-charged me, and sent me a bill! My husband got progressive lenses. They charged him $600 and also billed the insurance company about $400. Now the glasses were nice, but $1,000!?! They were nothing special. A couple months after he purchased them, when the side arm fell off, and he lost it, they charged him another $150 to replace it! Their prices are just WAY out of line. Sorry, but I will be going back to UC Berkeley School of Optometry next time.

The optometrist is thorough and excellent at explaining what all those eye tests are for and what his findings are. Staff is very warm. I chose the first frames Zeta chose for both eyeglasses and sunglasses even though I looked at a bunch of others. I didn't even have to wait long for an appointment. I'm happily sticking with this office.

I was referred to El Sobrante Optometry by a co-worker. I am so very happy I decided to follow through. The staff is friendly and accommodating and the doctor was the best eye doc I've ever seen.
It had been three years since my last eye exam and I was in desperate need of a full eye health exam -- not those little prescription update checks you get at the one-hour places. Dr. Hsieh (pronounced "Shay") was very thorough, friendly, and efficient. He explained what he was doing, and why, throughout the full exam. I had elevated pressure in my eyes, so Dr. Hsieh spent a little extra time discussing glaucoma and asked very good questions about any pain, discomfort, vision problems, etc. I'll go back to see him for follow-up exams.
I was very impressed by the latest and greatest technology in the office, and the ease with which the doctor and his staff used the equipment. Plus, the whole place was clean, clean, clean. And well-organized!
Aidan was definitely a standout in this all-star crowd. He is the frame stylist and largely responsible for filling the show room with fabulous, stylish frames across all price points. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and was able to explain to me the various differences in hinges, materials, and manufacturing techniques. With his help and guidance I was able to pick out a pair of frames that totally transformed me! I wore my new glasses to work for the first time today and I received so many compliments. Thank you Aidan!

I am a product manager for a software company and spend literally the whole day staring at a small laptop screen. The strain on my eyes would really drain me after a long day in the office.
Dr Hsieh and his team to the rescue.
I am giving El Sobrante Optometry 5 stars for the following reasons:
a) friendly family like atmosphere - Dr Hsieh and his team really treat you like family. They are easy to get along with and they really listen to your concerns.
b) Dr Hsieh and his team had experience with Lasik before. This was important to me because I had a procedure over a decade ago when the procedure was still very new. My vision has regressed since though.
c) The selection. So for me, finding good glasses is like finding a good baseball cap. Virtually impossible. Maybe it's the shape of my head. But Dr Hsieh's team were able to pick out a selection I really liked.
d) This one gets a reason to itself - it was affordable.

I would like to thank Dr. Hsieh without his careful examination and insistance, I would have never went to my eye specialist and been diagnosis with BIH and Mengenoma (sp). It was so serious that I had to have a LP the day I went to see my doctor, I have had CT's and MRI's and have been put on medication to perserve my eyesight.
Dr. Hsieh is a professional and staff is very friendly. I cannot thank Dr. Hsieh enough! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Dr. Hseih is great. He uses the latest technology and explains things very well. The selection of glasses is wonderful. The staff is very helpful with picking out a great looking and fitting frame too.
The only issue I had was that I was charged twice for one of the glasses I bought. I told them I had already paid but they insisted. I had to go back home, check my credit card records and explain that they made a mistake. They said they would refund but to come in. When I came it they gave me paperwork and said it was done but it still was not. I got a little mad at this point and they did fix it over the phone. Through this whole process not one of the three staff that were involved ever apologized for their financial mistakes or inconveniencing me. *That* is a turn off.Comment from Park H. of Eye Love Optometry 10/2/2010

I had my doubts about this place, and I don't particularly like going to El Sobrante either, but I desperately needed new glasses. I thought my search for an optometrist would lead me to places in San Francisco, Berkeley or Oakland, where the sophisticated staff steers me away from eyeglasses that would look better on a test crash dummy's mama. Anyway to El Sobrante Optometry I went; I couldn't ignore the reviews. Wow! I have to say that that was my all time favorite visit to a doctor's office. Dr. Hsieh's kindness, patience, thoroughness, and "smooth" attention to detail impressed me. I know more about my eyes now, and how to better care for them. The doctor's friendly staff listened to what I needed (durability, modern edge, eclectic, no designer labels, age appropriate). I look good in my new glasses...and the world looks better too!

This is by far the best optometry office that I have been to. My experiences at my old optometrist that I have been going to for the past three years in Santana Row (Optical Illusions) have been less than stellar, but I was duped by their convenient location for me and selection of frames. However, the doctor always appeared rushed and their opticians weren't always as helpful as they should have been. I took the drive out to El Sobrante after receiving a high level of recommendation for my annual eye exam/contact lens fitting. Dr Hsieh was extremely helpful and very meticulous. After my eye exam, Aidan (office manager/optician) had several framed picked out for my facial structure. He was very patient as I tried on the various pairs, as this is the part I usually hate the most because I can never decide. At the end of the visit, I had picked out a fantastic frame - one that Aidan strongly suggested. I typically only wear my glasses at night before bed, or in the morning before I put my contacts in, but I now wear my glasses at least three times a week to work, out to the bars, gym, etc. The prescription is perfect (my old prescriptions were apparently too strong, and I always had headaches..which is another reason why I hardly wore my glasses). I continue to get compliments on my glasses everyday....thanks Dr Hsieh, Aidan and the team at El Sobrante Optometry!
