I had to stay here two weeks while work was being performed on my home. I was basically indifferent to the experience.
The area seemed safe enough and the location is actually quite nice, right along the water and there is a bike/walking path right outside the hotel. Did anyone else know that there is a large houseboat community in Alameda?? Ask for a room with a view of the boats, not the parking lot.
The room itself was kind of depressing--lots of dark furnishings, drapery, etc. The lounge chair was quite comfy, the bed was not. I brought my own mattress pad. The rooms on the first floor are newly renovated and mine smelled of new carpeting. I kept my window open as much as possible to let things air out, but it really didnt help. Being on the first floor, I bought window locks at Longs drugs so that I could keep my windows open at night and feel safe. I was in a ADA room, which was much more roomy than the non-ADA rooms. Although there seemed to be a lot of activity with people walking about, my room was very quiet. Not much variety on the TV, with half of the channels being ESPN variants.
Located nearby the hotel is a Lucky grocery store, Longs drugs, and a couple of fast food places. There is easy access to the Webster/Posey tunnel. Lots of easy parking.
The front desk staff was more than willing to help us out with printing "google" directions and recommending local eateries. Even though there is no continental breakfast, the "Extended Stay" indicates that (most, if not all) rooms are equipped with a kitchen, where a cozy breakfast can be made. The rooms are clean and tidy, and the area is very safe and secure. When searching for a hotel in the Oakland area, I worry about location and the surrounding streets, but Extended Stay America in Alameda is right on the water (ask for a waterside room!) and surrounded by a couple other hotels, and a quiet, suburban-esque neighborhood.
Cons: Internet Access less-than great (try down-the-street coffee shops), ask specifically for toiletries (they'll give them to you if they're not already in the room), ask ahead if there's going to be a large brigade of construction workers sharing your stay (they can make sure you're roomed far from the 'party.' Even if the guys aren't loud, it can be overwhelming to walk out of your room and be swarmed by a whole lot of them!)
Great Price, Great Location, Great Service.
I was so happy to arrive here since our first night during this visit was spent in the Hellish Motel 6 Embarcadero in Oakland.
The price was right even by us just calling from the aforementioned Motel 6. $40 more a night seemed like a very small price to pay to escape that place.
Anyway - we liked the location in Alameda. We were given a waterfront view room for no extra charge and the room actually looked clean. We all know that hotel rooms aren't "really" clean, but the appearance of such made me feel so much better.
The room had 2 comfortable queen sized beds, a kitchen area, and the bathroom was pretty large. The room was decorated in the usual way that hotels are, nothing fancy, but like I mentioned, it looked clean to me.
The front desk was nice and helpful. The parking was great. There was great security and I felt really safe there.
The only thing that was kind of unappealing was the strong smell of cooking as we exited the elevator on the 3rd floor. In the morning, it was bacon and eggs and in the evening it was adobo for sure! I know this place caters to folks who are going to stay a while so I think the cooking smell was acceptable and it didn't penetrate to our room, but it was strong right as we got off the elevator. That's it. We didn't use any of the other features of the hotel. We were just so happy to stay at a place that didn't have any blood on the walls or hairs in the wash cloths. (see my review of the Motel 6 for this horror story).
If I need to stay at a hotel to visit family again, I will stay here for sure!
Pros: 1) Cheap (using Hotwire); 2) decently equipped kitchen area with large fridge and utensils; 3) friendly front desk.
Cons: 1) Slow wi-fi that costs $5 per stay; 2) no toiletries; 3) tiny TV; 4) weird keycard design that doesn't fit into wallets.
A very reasonable place to stay that's close enough to Oakland.
