My husband and I both enjoy the Upper West Side, and after our last visit, we decided we wanted to stay in the area again.

My guy found this place online, and we got a pretty good deal on it.

I must admit, when I walked in, I was impressed.
It's very old NY, and while some of the furnishings are a little dated, it somehow only adds the charm.

Our room was immaculate, and maid service was good and totally unobtrusive. We never had to ask for anything, our room was well stocked with towels and toiletries regularly.

The only bothersome thing about this place is the walls aren't very well insulated. You can hear the pipes and water being turned on and off in nearby rooms.
This is clearly an old building, and I think that comes with the territory.

The neighborhood is fantastic, with lots of interesting shops, cafes, and buildings nearby. Another reason we love staying in this part of the city is the real neighborhood feeling, it's not touristy at all. You can get a little bit of a sense of what's it's like to live here.

We totally enjoyed our time here, and if we can get comparable rates here on our next NY trip, I'd love to stay here again.

Stayed here on a recommendation of a friend who had previously stayed here. Upon reading other reviews i was prepared for a rude staff .... that never occurred. Front desk help was courteous and prompt and the doormen and housekeeping staff friendly and quick to help.

Room was small but for twin beds very comfortable - probably one of the most comfortable hotel beds and pillows i've slept on. Bathroom was well stocked with toiletries and towls ... shower was always hot and great water pressure. Rooms are relatively quiet and the design of the floors makes it so they are not on one long hallway which probably helps keep the noise down.

Across from the Museum of Natural History and near central park the location is excellent. Neighborhood restaurants and shops were an quick and easy walk and cabs of course are plentiful.

Location is also quieter and a bit removed from the craziness of times square and downtown areas.

The restuarant that is attached to the hotel EightyOne was excellent. We stopped in for a drink after an exhausting first day and ended up ordering off the grill menu. The gimlet was excellent and even a simple hamburger was stellar.

wouldn't hesitate ot stay here again or recommend.

I really liked this hotel! We got a great deal through Expedia so that helped out and the location was perfect for all the museums we had planned to visit.

The room, while tiny, was comfortable enough for 2 people. And the twin beds we got felt much larger than twins I'm used to.  Everything was plush and the bathroom was really nice too.

I do have one complaint: front desk staff, stop bemoaning that people get deals on websites and that "room types are not guaranteed if not booked directly through us." If you want business you don't need to complain. She mentioned it about 4 times while I was checking in that the price of the hotel room we were getting was so much more expensive on their website. So I'm to blame for saving money?

However, the bell man was great and helpful.  I'd stay back here again as it's a great hotel.

The location of his hotel is great!  A 5 minute walk from Central Park and the Museum of Natural History!  For the price we paid, the room was a good size.  I thought the lobby was absolutely beautiful!  The staff weren't rude to me as others have previously written.  For a hotel in New York that is so close to Central Park, I'd say this is a great choice.

Excelsior has a great location right off the Museum of Natural History with proximity to all the Upper West has to offer, but is not as good as its direct competitor, the Lucerne, just a couple blocks away.  The rooms are huge - ours had a living room with a couch, small TV,  and desk, in addition to the well-sized bedroom (which had a second, bigger TV).  The layout, beds, and furniture are comfortable as well.  Its fairly quiet too, which out-of-towners will surely appreciate.

The building is old by comparable hotel / expensive standards (unless you're already used to living in Manhattan standards).  The troubles were mainly that (1) the cheap key-cards de-magnetized way too easily, so we had to go to the front desk nearly every time we wanted to get back into our room.  (2) They have all these snacks and beverages next to the bed with a sign claiming that the food is tagged electronically and if it is moved from its place for more than 20 seconds, the room will be charged for buying it.  That's ridiculous and disrespectful to your customers.

The Excelsior has a great legacy location, but it's fitting next to the Museum of Natural History, because the hotel's technological attitudes are a dinosaur.

I found this Hotel to be a great value. The price was reasonable. The most reasonable around in fact, we stayed around the Christmas season. The Room was a good size especially for NY standards and the bed was comfy. The bathroom was clean and a good size as well.

The thing I found to be their greatest asset was their Concierge. Every night we'd wlak downstairs and she would help us by suggesting Outstanding places to eat and line us up with reservations even at the last minute. She was great and her help really added to our trip.

I was very happy with our stay at the Excelsior Hotel. I would stay here again for sure.

This hotel has a nice lobby and that's it.  After that, you're on your own.  Its location allows nice access to Subways and Central Park, but the staff are EXTREMELY RUDE.  I walked up to the Front Desk and they completely ignored me.  There was NO line, I was the ONLY person in the lobby and they still didn't acknowledge me.  For the amount of money that was paid for that room, I really expected better.

The hotel itself is pretty expensive for what you get in the room, but it is Manhattan, so I'm sure that's what's expected.

One star for the lobby (it IS nice) and  another star for the location.

A stunning Upper West Side landmark property within walking distance of Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Rose Center for Earth and Space. Accommodations, in standard queen-bedded rooms and one- and two-bedroom suites, are decorated in a French motif. Amenities include voicemail messaging,  satellite TV, hair dryer, irons and ironing board, and an in-room safe. Guest facilities include a well-equipped fitness center and library. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building and, for guests without a laptop, a public Internet station is available in the lobby. A breakfast room is open daily 7:00am to 11:00am. There is no on-site restaurant for lunch and dinner, but the hotel is in close proximity to many dining spots on Columbus Avenue. Some will find the location slightly inconvenient for midtown activities and attractions; others will appreciate the relative calm of the primarily residential neighborhood. Rates are seasonal, as low as $159 in the winter months.

The downside to this hotel was the front desk staff.  The woman who checked me into the room was a complete bitch.  Her attitude was completely unnecessary.   But the hotel made up for it in location.  I traveled for business but brought my 5 year old with me for her birthday and my sister.  Our room was large for NYC standards but not large compared to other cities but it was comfortable enough with 2 double beds and a view of the Museum of Natural History.   The upper west side is a great place to stay when traveling with children.   The neighborhood is safe with lots of things to do within walking distance plus the subway is within walking distance so it is easy to hop on a train to get to anywhere else in the city.  I would definitely stay here again especially if traveling with my children.

The Excelsior sits across from  the Natural History Museum on a quiet tree lined street with views of Central Park. So very Upper West Side.  This hotel is my comfort zone when city life gets a little too crazy. Once I get my second wind I walk to the perfectly located corner subway stop and city sucks me back in again.

A great, romantic hotel located in an excellent neighborhood, next to the Natural History Museum and across the park from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Located right on the subway too, this is a great upper west side place to hangout.  Only a few blocks from Zabars too.
