Review from Alece O.
Brooklyn, NY
I've been going to Evolution for a pedi from the very posh Missoni. She knows her feet well! I finally got my hair done-wash, press, cut, scalp treatment. (I live ridiculously close so I have no excuse why I haven't been sooner)
I am funny about salons. I need a comfy, cozy environment where I feel comfortable chit-chatting and not gossiping. Evolution fulfills that. I want my stylist to be super attentive and super friendly and Henry fulfilled that. Even though he just started a month or two ago it was as like he's been there for a long time. He's professional, very experienced and really cares about hair care and not just styling.
My hair turned out beautiful as expected, although I probably should have waited until the humidity died down a little so it could have lasted. The scalp treatment was much needed for me.
I think Natasha (the owner) does a wonderful job running the salon. I love coming there and I would go anywhere else to get my hair done. Evolution is a great asset to the neighborhood. -

I'm still on the hunt for a home salon and I wasn't impressed by Evolution. I will concede that the facilities were high quality but they didn't make me feel comfortable. They took a history of my hair as if they were truly concerned about my hair regimen but beyond that they didn't give me any advice as to how to improve the quality of my hair, the stylist was more concerned about upselling me on products. The receptionist didn't even bother to appear to be happy to be there, she was visibly apathetic.
I won't be going back and it's not because they burned my hair or took too much off when I asked for a trim but it's because I was extremely underwhelmed and turned off by their weak attempt to be a high end caliber salon. -

I've waited a few months to write this review... simply because i wasn't sure how to rate this place.
The Good:
- Good relaxer- hair looked shiny
- Not too crowded like other salons
The Bad:
- After a significant haircut (inches!) I still had some ends that looked chewed up!
- I walked out with $200+ bill and I have fine chin-length hair- super easy to style and cut!
The Ugly:
- This salon tries to be all hi-class but at the core has ridiculous policies that not even the dive neighborhood salon would implement. Why? They require a deposit for the appointment!!! They try to up-sell you when you are in the chair and will not give prices over the phone (how are you supposed to know if you are willing to pay for the service?!) Mostly they just have a rude. stank attitude. I would put up with the rest (willing to pay up for nice hair) but the service/attitude is a no-go for me.
If you go, bring wads of cash and the patience of a saint : )Comment from Natasha P. of Evolution - The Green Room Salon 1/11/2012

I've been going to this salon for quite sometime now. My first experience was great, however, it seems that in the past year the stylists have been trying to squeeze more clients in at the same time and quality & customer service have noticeably suffered.
I've also referred numerous friends to this salon & all of them have stopped going due bad customer service experiences.
I have recently stopped going due to a rude experience with the front desk clerk. Wish the salon could've lived up to the original fabulousness I felt but everything can't last forever. I can't see myself paying such high prices for mediocre styling & lack of customer appreciation. -

In my quest for a new stylist and hair care technician, I Googled for Salons that specialized in short hair cuts; I came upon Evolution. I visited their site and read up on the bios of the stylist and the shop; I was impressed so I quickly call to schedule an early Friday morning appointment. I made sure that I was on time as I to received confirmation emails regarding their strict cancellation policy and late fees.
I walked in and was immediately impressed with the decor and the friendliness of the staff. My stylist Shantai was very pleasant and respectful of my time and hers, I enjoyed the ambiance so much that I decided to take advantage of their spa services and got a mani. Missoni was very pleasant, funny and helpful.
t I think I may have found my new hair care provider. The only reason that I didn't give 5 stars was because I know that it is my first time at the shop and their may and have been a bit of overcompensation going on and because they are already a bit pricey and try to sell you more. -

I had to downgrade my beloved Evolution only because the last time I went to the hair salon I had a color disaster.
Don't get me wrong, the hair color was BEAUTIFUL, but as a woman working in corporate America, it was just too much and i told my stylist that before we started the application. So she applied the color, washed it out, styled my hair beautifully and while I was in the salon, I thought this is a little bright but it's not that bad. But when I got home and actually into natural light, I realized that it was way too red for me to go to any type of corporate setting and not be made a fool.
I think stylists have to be able to read their clients, as well as know what I mean when I say "I work in corporate America, so it can't be anything too drastic". Unfortunately, don't think she got this and unfortunately, probably will not return here.Listed in: Who Doesn't Like a Girly…

I have been to Evolution about four times. Each for a wash, and style. I think once I had a deep condition. The atmosphere is great. Very chic, clean, and professional. I loved how my hair came out even though they would straight iron (which I am not used to). I figured, hey if everyone else here can handle it and have beautiful hair so can I right? Nope, after my fourth visit I began to notice and lot of hair falling out when I combed it. My hair started to break off. I have to chalk it up to the straight iron. Regardless of how nice my hair came out it was becoming weak and brittle. So now I just get my wash and set from my Dominicanas and my hair is looking pretty good. For a lot cheaper.
This is just my experience...I may go back for a mani or pedi! -

I have been coming here for two years. The only stylist I have ever used is Tasha (the owner). I wear my hair in a natural style and I find that Tasha knows her stuff in this area. She uses (and has available for sale) top of the line products. In rare instances I have felt that Tasha was overbooked and consequently my wait was longer than expected. However, these instances are rare indeed. Of course, I try to book early morning (i.e., 10am) appointments and always go during the week (as opposed to a week-end).
The salon is very clean and chic (as other posters have noted). I find the staff very user-friendly; and the website is also great--the ability to book appts online is huge. I have also frequently availed myself to the manicure and pedicure services.
I would and have recommended Tasha to persons who wear their hair natural or are in the process of going natural. I have observed that the salon has a lot of clientele that have relaxers and/or wear their hair straight and the stylists appear to do a good job--i.e., hair looks great when people leave, but I can't vouch for how they do in that area since I don't wear my hair straight or have a relaxer. -

I bought the Living Social coupon for a wash, blow out and conditioner, with a mani pedi for $50.00. I went in February but ended getting a totally different service ( they upsell) and spent about $150.00, that visit.
So I realized that I needed to use the deal before it expired on 9-22-11 and called and made an appointment and was seen by the same stylist Sharntai (sp). Sharntai checked out my hair and advised me, because it was natural there was an extra $15.00 charge added to the service, and that I would need a haircut when I said I only wanted a trim, she said they don't do trims only haircuts. The price for the haircut was $65.00. Lastly, I had extensions in ( 2 pieces) and was charged $25.00 to take them out.
My total was $99.19 ( before tip), in addiiton to the $50.00 for the cost of the Living Social deal.
Sharntai was very respectful of my time and I was washed, conditioned and blown out in record time. The haircut was more than I wanted, but the style was cute, too bad it didnt last the night on my natural hair, it looked pretty when I left the salon though.
I got here at 5:30 and was out by 7:00.I wasnt able to get the mani pedi that day because the manicurist leaves at 7 and was rescheduled for another day. -

This was my top pick for a new salon as I've just moved to the area. The place is immaculate and all of the staff are top notch. Everyone is well-mannered, friendly and profesional. My stylist, Sharntai, is a God send!!! She saved my badly damaged hair and gave me a cut & color that is out of this world. It completely fits my personality & she was able to size me up immediately...just like any amazing hair stylist should.
Sharntai also taught me how to care for my hair on my own...a skill I was greatly lacking.
This place isn't cheap, but nor is it overly expensive. You get what you pay for---great service. It is definitely worth a try and I'm sure that anyone would love it. These ladies rock and you will step out of there looking like a million bucks! -

My second time visiting Evolution and I love it! The prices are very high but you get what you pay for! Natasha, the owner, did a great job on my hair and talked to me before doing anything. The ENTIRE staff is very knowledgeable and won't steer you in the wrong direction and won't do things to your hair that isn't necessary.
If your looking for a salon that specializes in HAIR CARE and not just a hair style then this is the place to go! Expect to pay anywhere from $100 - $165. You WON'T be disappointed =) And I look FAB!!! Thanks Tasha =) -

Their prices are too high. I might as well go to a salon in the city. The stylist in the city is quicker and more efficient. I can actually schedule another appointment on the day that I get my hair done. They are also cheaper and I can get a hand massage and a beverage that are complimentary.
Evolution's stylists do know how to style hair.
However, they are too slow for the high prices they charge. If I am paying top price then value my time and don't have me sitting there all day. I cannot make any other appointments when I go to this salon. I don't know if they will be slow or fast. They are usually slow.
I think they should gossip less and focus on doing the hair as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The person who takes your money also seems embarrassed that the prices are so high.

If you want a GREAT manicure and someone who knows great colors, shape... and can make your nails grow, just sit in Missoni's chair one time and you'll see the difference.

Review from Pretty Intelligent A.
Ann Arbor, MI
After being referred to this shop by a friend with great hair, I looked online and noticed that they offered a 20% off discount for first time customers. Amazed by the prices, discount, and location; I tried to call to make an appointment to get my hair done but no one ever answered the phone. Determined to try this great shop, I walked to the salon from Brooklyn Heights and was greeted by the owner (i.e. Natasha). She was pleasant and told me about their different hair treatments. Since she confirmed that new customers received 20% off all new services in our conversation, I decided to return the next day to get a press and curl, conditioning treatment, pedicure, and Brazilian wax. My appointment was for 3:00pm but I didn't leave the shop until 9:00pm which I consider a long time to be in a salon even for services rendered.
However, the worst part of my experience was when I got to the register and the staff told me that I would only receive the 20% off my hair style and none of the other services. Even after speaking with the owner about the situation, they didn't change their price to what she and I discussed in person in the salon the previous day. When I reminded her of our conversation the previous day, she told me that she had misspoken.
I liked my hair alot but the other services were OK. Based on my experience, I think the perks (mainly the hair products and conditioner treatments) were overshadowed by the poor customer service on the part of the owner (i.e. Natasha).
Needless to say, leaving a place of business feeling bamboozled didn't sit well on my heart so I decided to warn fellow yelpers to get a price quote in writing (perhaps their business card or email confirmation if the appointment is booked online) at this place of business. -

I absolutely loved getting a manicure and pedicure from Missoni. She has a lot of style and really loves what she does. I let her choose my nail colors, and she is truly a connoisseur of nails. The experience is comfortable and fabulous, and the salon has a great atmosphere and great music.

I absolutely love this salon. Tiffany and Natasha are my favorite stylists but they all do great hair. I am currently transitioning to natural and they always leave my coarse hair looking silky smooth. They are a bit on the pricey side though.

Pass on this one if you have anything other than black hair. I was basically asked to leave because my stylist didn't know what to do with me. But somehow I was still coerced into paying a 25 dollar consulting fee with my hair half processed and vaseline all over my scalp. Thumbs down.
I have gotten the same treatment done every year before at this Dominican salon in the city I used to live in. But my stylist Shantay had only done it her way, and was reluctant to change. Even though I am white and so my hair responds differently to chemicals.
It seemed like she was making up "her way" as she went along. We did a test portion on a bottom section of my hair. When she rinsed it out, water and chemicals poured down my back. She tried to blame it on the way that I was sitting until a co-worker came over and quietly fixed the height of the sink or something. I'm not really sure what was wrong because I was preoccupied with being soaked. Her co-worker also sweetly towelled me down. After that, I was sort of over the whole process. When the test section turned out looking awful, and she blamed that on my "overprocessed" hair.
She gave up on me without having finished all of the necessary steps to neutralize my hair. Her boss sent her back after quizzing her on everything she had done, so I didn't get sent home with a burning scalp full of chemicals. I had to ask the receptionist for a napkin to wipe off all of the vaseline she has applied around my scalp to protect it. Then I paid 25 dollars for the worst salon experience ever. -

Evolution! All my people say--Evolution! Sorry, store name reminded me of the song by Arrested Development.
Okay back to the matter at hand. I have been going to this salon for quite some time now and it truly embodies the concept of HAIR CARE. Natasha runs a very tight shift; she ensures that her high standards are being implemented every step of the way, which is GREAT for the customer! From the moment you step into the salon and until you leave, you feel as though everything is being done purposely and thoughtfully and there is no attitude, everyone is extremely sweet. Whether you are being serviced by Natasha or her other stylists, careful consideration is given to the condition of your hair at the moment and what it will need. Shampoo, conditioner and leave-in treatments for each individual customer are all discussed between the assistant and the stylist, they don't just pick up what ever is left on the counter. This is NOT the type of salon that will sacrifice the health of your hair just to make a quick buck, Natasha believes in nurturing the hair from inside out. That philosophy pays off, I am constantly getting compliments on my hair do, it manages to remain fresh and "editorial" even a week after my wash. Sure it can be pricey (though very much in line with other "high end" salons in BK or Manhattan), but if you can, its a great way to treat yourself and your hair (at least once in a while). -

Since Tasha has been my stylist, my natural hair has grown long and healthy. This is the only salon I will go to for hair cuts or hair color. She finds a way to keep my hair healthy and always uses amazing products. I highly recommend this salon. The price is worth it for beautiful hair.

In at 6:15 and out at 8:15?! I have never been treated so respectfully in regard to my time at a salon. Want a well-decorated, clean, professional, wonderfully designed neck-saving sinks , and non-yappy stylists? Then this is the place for you
They aren't cheap , but first-timers get 20% off . Something tells me you will never leave this place without spending at least $100 whatever you do and the deep conditioning treatments are $35 ( I think) .
I went for a wash, blowout and cut on natural hair ( with deep condition it was in the $130's w/o tip) that left me with bouncy voluminous hair with real layers and texture . I was so shocked that my hair flowed and settled at the slightest provocation that tried to walk stiffer down the street , lest I look too katie couric perky. When I came home my husband looked at Michelle Obama's new do on the screen and then me and back again and said " you need to tell her where you are getting your hair did." -

I recently visited Evolution and was very pleasantly surprised. I'm growing out a relaxer and the in between stage is hard to manage so I really needed help. The staff here is talented, professional and very friendly. I got a wash, blow dry & flat iron (about $100) and my hair looked beautiful when I left. I'm used to paying these high prices in Manhattan but Brooklyn rents are cheaper so I wasn't thrilled about the final cost - especially on Atlantic Avenue. However, I received excellent care, good advice on hair maintenance and only spent about an hour and a half in the salon. So what if I didn't have to cross a bridge? I got exactly what I wanted right in my own backyard. I really like this place and intend to go back as often as my wallet allows - LOL!

Review from Chey H.
I've been to Evolution twice now, both times to get a touch-up (I get my hair relaxed). I had a hard time finding a salon in Brooklyn where my stylists weren't more into gossiping and fooling around than working on my hair. Evolution is not that place at all. The vibe is very professional and the stylists know what they're doing. I felt comfortable asking questions about the products and talking with my stylist about my hair. They are on the pricey side, but you're paying for good quality and experience, and I don't want anyone messing up my hair! I've yet to try their other services (waxing, nails, spa treatments) but I expect they are just as professional in those areas as well.

Evolution Salon truly is as good as it gets!! After I experienced a mishap in my bathroom with an at home texturizer, I decided all I really wanted was to get back to natural ASAP. I have now visited the salon twice and I have to say Natasha is a miracle worker!! She's patient, understanding, and actually listens. Natasha gave me a haircut that kept my length but gave me shape to hide all the straight pieces I had overprocessed.
The prices are a little high but you get what you pay for including a full on consultation before anything is done. Also, she runs a tight ship which is worth its weight in gold....GONE are the days of spending the entire day in the salon. I am in and out of there in an hour and a half with cut, color, and shampoo/deep condition/style. Where else can you get SUCH amazing service? My hair has never looked healthier and been so cared for. I will never go anywhere else. Thanks Natasha!! -Shanise -

I decided to check out Evolution since it got such good reviews. The pros: professional staff, clean shop, and light beverages offered. The cons: pricey and the mani and pedi were just okay...the prep work leading to the paint job was very good but the quality of the paint job was not quite what I expected. Also, it was a let down to walk into a shop with a lot of (sprayed) hair product diffused into the air...they primarily handle chemically processed hair although one of the staffers said that they did style locked hair... but I was looking for a shop with a different vibe...more natural bend. This place would be good for those seeking hair processing services.

I cannot believe I am one of the 1st persons to yelp - Evolution - the Green Room Salon. I am sorta honored and a little surprised. Where all the sistahs on yelp?! So, lets 1st say that I moved to Brooklyn about 12 months ago. The first time I went to Evolution - it was a gift from a friend This place is great. If you are a women - esp a women of color - esp a black woman - with kinky, straight or natural hair...this salon will do you good. I first went when I had straight hair -- i left feeling great - my hair looked and felt great. I went today my hair is natural - and they again did an awesome job. They are super professional, kind, smart and know their business. They give you good options and offer 20% off if you are a first time customer. I am def a fan of Evolution. I am still getting use to the cost of getting natural hair done with good products done well -- that is still somewhat of a challenge.... I have to be mindful of that - but I have committed to visit Evolution one every 8 - 10 weeks. Its worth it - my hair looks healthy and its great Everyone that works there is great. They are such a warm place. Also, they wax and do nails.... Evolution is a one stop shop for Black women who need to get their beauty on. Thanks Evolution!
