I don't know what took me so long to visit this market for the first time since I live under two blocks away! I used to shop almost everyday at the Ralph's.. I even have an application all filed out for some time now. I just hate change in some ways I guess, I love trying new things when it's random. Evidently, not when I go grocery shopping. I really made a mistake coming into this store tonight.
I had anticipated getting cash back off of a check as my bank had to reissue me a new bank card (without telling me) because of some problem unrelated to myself or use. I got all my groceries, some I just skipped because DAMN it's pricey up in here! I bought all the *specials* but the things that weren't specials were spensive! Also, is this a hippie store of some sort? They don't sell hair dye here... Plus even though the layout was very similar to Ralph's I couldn't seem to find anything. I felt like I was in a foreign land!
Once I got up to the register, I stated "imma need thirty back" and the cashier said OK but comes to find out, no cash back on anything 'cept the debt card. Bleh, but the store is pretty I suppose.

Eve's is a nice addition to the local grocery landscape. If you want mediterranean or random European products, this is the place! They have a ginormous selection of middle eastern spices and ingredients, and many varieties of veggies/pickles/sauces in jars packaged by the Bulgarian company ZerGut - good stuff! Also available: Hengstenberg Sauerkraut in the foil bag - totally different from the crap you usually get here. Downside - no Harissa, but I can get that at Corti's. Huge meat department, nice deli counter and a great selection of natural/organic foods as well. Friendly employees too!

I stopped by Eve's Market on my way home from a job interview last week not really knowing what to expect (Eve's moved into the old Ralph's space after the chain left Northern California). Based on the logo (an apple embedded in the E) I imagined it was going to be a health food type market, something like Wild Oats, but according to the checker taking all of my money, Eve's is a cross between Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. I'd say that's fairly accurate given there are a lot of products Eve's stocks that I don't normally see when I'm shopping at Safeway (there is a great array of ethnic choices from all over). My opinion is that prices mirror a Raley's more than a Trader Joe's.
They have a deli with a good selection of prepared food, bakery and a coffee/juice bar as well as a pizza nook. There is a good selection of packaged meat (might even be halal if I read the sign correctly). I liked their selection of produce and there was a huge selection of tea (I picked up an off-brand of cinnamon tea I found there for a decent price). I can't report anything special about their selection of booze but I found a couple deals including a bottle of Mike's hard frozen lemonade. When I was finally ready to leave there were two lines open with no wait and the best part of this story is the cashier carded me.
I definitely won't be doing my regular grocery shopping at Eve's since it's not nearby me but I'll certainly pop in to Eve's when I'm looking for something unusual (or am on the way home from my new job!) and have a few extra bucks in my pocket.
