Everyman is simply the best. The latte's are supreme.
The service is first class. Sam rocks!
Its a great discovery, very different, and better, than the other so called counter culture cafes.

If you're from the land of Blue Bottle coffee, this is the closest I've been able to find to it in New York.

The downside is not enough chairs, and the service the times I have been there has been tepid.

The coffee, like Blue Bottle's, is toward the nuttier and mellower side, about as mellow enough to have without cream.

My born-and-raised Seattlite friend claims every time she visits that it's impossible to get good coffee in NYC. I searched yelp and found many good reviews on Everyman, so we decided to check it out.

We arrived and saw the Special Agent Dale Cooper reference to a damn fine cup of coffee, and she hesitated to photograph it until tasting it herself. When we left, she took a photo.

She claims it's the fact that the triple ristretto that they do (oh, fancy coffee terms). Either way, Everyman gets the Seattlite coffee snob seal of approval!

I got a mocha that time. But had cafe au lait another time. I will try the espresso soon.

Everyman is one of my favorite "third places" in NYC since they have excellent espresso and coffee selections, a quaint place to sit down and meet with friends or business, and free wifi.....It is becoming more difficult for New Yorkers to find all three, and this new New Yorker is immensely thankful for Everyman.  The staff are kind, build rapport with their regulars, and really know how to respect the bean and not burn the dang milk!  Thanks Everyman!

Heck yes.

I had the Mezzo with Soy Milk. I'd opt for having an Americano or something similar next time because the soy kind of just ruins the flavor of the beautiful espresso that Everyman offers.

I'm an Abraco regular so for me to enjoy another cup of espresso is difficult. But these guys do a splendid job.

And I liked their collection of a few random books. I read the David Lynch book and it was surprisingly uplifting and spiritual. Very cool.

Definitely hitting them up on a more regular basis.

Good lattes, complete with pretty foam flowers. There are more outlets than there are seats and free wireless, so this is a great place to do some work, on a cool day. On a hot summer day it seems to be approaching 95 degrees inside Everyman, not the best environment for drinking hot coffee.
Service is no frills (frills being smiles or friendliness), but this is good coffee and plenty of space to spend time enjoying it.

This place is pretty good. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me because it's so nice and quiet. The coffee alone is maybe a 7.5 out of 10, but the place is like a 9. No food, just some cookies, etc. $$$ Like $4.36 for a 12 ounce latte, pretty good, but Joe is better and cheaper. This place never has a wait so if you live near then it is a good place. Not the best in manhattan, but definitely good.

I like the layout, the exposed brick is refreshing and reminds me of everything I enjoyed about Bmore.  However...

I cant take snotty guys in skinny jeans.  I got myself a mocha, which would have been more enjoyable if:

1) Skinny jean boy decided to NOT wipe off the excess chocolate sauce that spilled onto the rim of my cup with his finger.
2) I was uncomfortable with skinny jean boy allowing me to dig into the biscotti jar.  Thinking of all the hands that had been touching a subway railing that went into that jar made me want to vomit, but I had more willpower to enjoy my biscotti.
3) Skinny jean boy drops "to-go" tops all over the floor.  Fine.  After helping him pick them off the floor... HE PUTS THEM BACK ON THE RACK TO USE.
4) I grabbed an americano to go.  He then shakes the tip jar after I paid.  Really buddy?  If I had seen you wash your hands once in the 3 hours I was here, I'd think differently.

Ugh.  Once skinny jean boy gets fired, this place will have its potential realized, hopefully.

awesome clientele - an artist came in for a cup of coffee and showed the barista her canvas, local theater performers dropped by, everyone's a friend here.

warehouse feel with high ceilings and whitewashed brick walls.  good sized tables (for 1 + laptop), outlets on one wall.   tiny bud vases on the tables are a charming touch.  artsy but it doesn't hit you over the head with it.

they use counter culture beans. still think the capps at 9th st are better,  but definitely makes the cut.

fabulous espresso.
even better staff.
once i came in here and saw the ceramic melitta filter(like what they do drip with at abraco a few blocks away-also using counter culture beans) and it was near the sink full of spoons and cutlery.i was told they don't make any drinks with it.but i asked if the barista would make me a small pour over coffee, and they actually washed it and preceeded to make the drink.(it was the now out of season counter culture los luchadores, btw) and it was fantastic.tasted like sugar cookies.pure, dark, slightly spicy sugar cookies.
oh,and the first time i ever came here,i think their nameis sam if i remember right, gave me espresso and a soy macchiato for $4.she just divided the double shot they usually sell.they WANTED me to try the straight espresso and a milk-y drink.unbelieveable.
speaking of soymilk, they use zensoy, much creamier, thicker and tastier than other soymilks, and they manage(well most of em)to do great latte art with it,too.
i took my friend's little brother her last friday when he asked to try more "good coffee" in nyc.fun.
the space is a bit weird, and sometimes i hate the fluorescent lights in the middle of the day,but coffee is more important that crappy lighting,4 stars!

p.s they sell these adorable mini mini muffins and i think they really need vegan ones.ones they had blueberry white chocolate, and i would've totally boughten one and a soy macchiato just for the aesthetic of having 2 tony things to go with eachother.

p.s.s this place made me re-fall in love with the song "heart beat" by seduction, when i came in and it was playing one afternoon.heh.

Really good coffee, reminds me of Abraco.  Only whole and half/half available.  No fake sugar.  The space is open and has a techy vibe.  Tons of people on their laptops.  This is where i'll come to do homework.  If you get the iced coffee ask for less ice.....i was done with mine in 2 minutes.

Everyman espresso is the best espresso in town.  Don't get me wrong, I love Joe's too, and they're both on 13th.  But Everyman does perfect creamy espresso with thick crema, perfect macciato's, and have really really good chocolate croisants.

But they also manage to do the post-modern, post-industrial decor pretty well.  It's comfy, they have both tables and bar seating.  What else, well they're situated in the lobby of a theatre, a really small indie one, so you get cool characters, and that uber-cool theatre-y feeling.

Oh, did I mention they have wifi?

Seriously, this place is my fav in the neighborhood

If there's one thing I love, it's a great shot of espresso with the perfect amount of foam and just the right bitterness. But the perfect shot of espresso at a place with a Twin Peaks quote written on the sign outside? Well, that makes for a 5 star review. Agent Cooper would find this to have a damn fine cup of coffee, just as I do.

Love the coffee. Love it. But it can take like fifteen minutes to get it. Literally. I timed my mezzo the other day. I understand that good coffee takes time, but there's taking extra time to do things right and just basically wasting movement and making cityfolk feel like we're in the south. I've started going around the corner to the new Think just because my patience--especially pre-coffee--can't stand the wait.

in a city full of lame ass coffee shops everyman stands out as the beacon of bowel cleansing caffeine joy.

now, i usually hold true to the skuttlebutt in milan that you shouldn't drink cappuccino after 11 am but this place makes it worth the extra time in coffee purgatory.  most places simply shove the steamed milk over the espresso and pass that off as a capp.  bullshit.  a true espresso blends the frothy goodness with the espresso to create a unified elixir of kick in your pants yumminess.

yay, the hipsters behind the counter are worthy of a smirk and the patrons of the theatre in whose lobby everyman resides can make you glad you don't live in a retirement home can make this somewhat of a daunting and perturbed experience but it is well worth it.  standing in line waiting for your beloved coffee while some dipshit from long island who has never had anything but starf*cks gawks about the $1 cookies is like your coke dealer telling you to be patient.

my only complaint is that when this was still called 9th street espresso, they had the funniest sign behind the counter that read, "unaccompanied children will be given an espresso and a free puppy."
i always got a chuckle about that.

This is one of my favourite places to go for coffee in the East Village -- but just for that, for coffee, not for dessert or extended social interaction.  This place is just tiny, no-frills place for serious coffee for the serious coffee lover.  If you love Starbucks, you'll think this place sucks.  If you are a snob about coffee like some people are about wine, you'll think it's amazing.

There's no fancy sugary drinks, no faux-homey decor, and no elaborate display of pastries, just the most basic coffee and espresso drinks, a few chairs and tables, and free wifi.  The coffee is consistently delicious and varies on a daily basis, and the espresso is always perfect.  Occasionally they have some really mediocre croissants or muffins, but you wouldn't want to go there for that anyhow.  The coffee is a bit expensive -- but really, not much more than anywhere else, (a large coffee is $2.25 - most places are like $2) and it's so good that I'd never complain.

The macchiato was great, perhaps a slight bit too acidic, but that might have been the shot. They're using just the right blend to give you a happy sensation on your tongue! The barista knows his stuff and is just as cool as the coffee bar.

The only thing I would change in there would be the set up. It's in a theater foyer and therefore it feels a bit like being in a train station. Get more chairs and tables in there, offer wi-fi and the college crowd or business people will hang out getting their jolt all day.

I'd go here in a pinch but that pinch is likely to be rare given the proximity of many other good coffee places.

They do coffee and little else, and by "little else" I mean no decor, hardly any seating, no other drinks besides coffee, no ambiance, no color, no warmth from the staff.  I think the only reason I would go here would be to get a coffee to go when I really want to go to B Cup but I am afraid that I will want to sit there for hours and just don't have the time.

As far as I'm concerned, the headiest aroma floating through the air at this place isn't the brewing espresso--it's the pretentiousness of the staff.

I appreciate a good espresso or espresso macchiato, and this place tries to live up to the Italian standard, judging by the various preparations and notes on the menu. ("All drinks are served triple ristretto" or some such nonsense...they're actually served much longer than ristretto. A true ristretto has very little water filtered through so only about half a normal shot of espresso. They write below this on the menu "ask if you don't know what that means". I figure they don't really know either so what's the point)

I developed a taste for good Italian coffee when I was living in Italy and drinking espresso and espresso macchiato on a daily basis to wake up between my English lessons. This place simply makes it too dark and burned. Either the roasting has gone awry or they pack the grounds too tightly in the shuttle. Italian coffee has a nice balance of earthy tones and smooth creaminess. This place is too earthy, almost muddy.

I want to say that I do like American coffee, simply served and cheaply delivered at places like the Mud truck. The problem I have with Everyman is, they have the pretension that they've mastered the old world style and let you know with their attitude. Problem is, they haven't. Either do it right, or wipe away your misplaced smugness.

One more complaint, the guys who work here are incredibly slow. It's called "espresso" because it's fast. Quick. Speedy. Expedited. Not here--they take an ungodly amount of time to pack the espresso shuttle. Are they placing the coffee ground by ground? Weighing, remeasuring and weighing again? I have no idea, but they are certainly slow. It's almost entertaining how slow they are.

Three stars because the coffee is admittedly a cut above Starbucks or other joints serving espresso. But it's not what it could be, given their intentions.

To sum up: It's not for "everyman". It's not "espresso". It would be better rechristened as "Elite Coffee--Served Lethargically" but that's probably not catchy enough. Sorry everyman.

I am very critical of espresso drinks, and I have good reason to be. Much like Steven V., I care not only about the actual coffee, but the foam as well. I am an utter whore for foam, and it's difficult to find good foam.

I've been here twice, once for a cappucino, once for an au lait. - both great drinks. The first barista was superior (even making a fancy design by pouring the espresso through the foam), but the second wasn't awful, and more to the point, both made top rate foam. The coffee itself is  fresh, rich, triple ristretto, has strength without too much bitterness, etc. It's damn good coffee. I  notice they use organic milk, which to me is a huge plus.

They also sell a small assortment of pastries, presumably not made in house, that are very delicious. REALLY very delicious, and most of them quite tiny and thus not very expensive, which is perfect. A nibble to satisfy the sweet tooth. I had the chocolate filled cakelet and the almond muffinlet and both were scrumptious.

My only quibbles with this place are that they are a bit slow/inattentive, and that they only take cash.

Note: if a 1/2" doorstep still counts as wheelchair accessible, this place IS.

It does have great coffee, I'll give it that, but my visit today left me unimpressed.  I ordered (or thought I had) an iced drink, but they gave me a hot drink.  When I brought this up, they essentially ignored me, one of the girls gave me an evil look and made me feel like an idiot ( i very well may be, but she doesn't know that).  I don't understand how people in a service job don't know how to give kind service.  I even offered to pay for the new iced drink.  Honestly, I am not sure if I will come back.  I want to feel welcomed and at least treated somewhat decently....I don't think that is too much to ask.....especially when I am paying $5 for my coffee.

God I love this place. Normally I am not really a coffee person. But upon my arrival into New York, I began my quest for an amazing latte!

Really though. The cows that make the milk for these lattes must be some seriously spoiled heifers. I just imagine them sitting out on the grass (on their backs) soaking up the sun, catching rays, and just living the life. Later on I am sure they do about three hours of cardio and then have a nice four course vegan meal that gives their body everything they need.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the milk is damn silky smooth. Combined with the espresso? Heavenly. When it's done at its best, it's a thoroughly complex and mouth massaging extravaganza. It does seem that it depends on the barista that is making it, but even when it is not done as well as other times, it is still damn good.

Thank you $10,000 espresso machine. Thank you milk from the cow gods. Thank you Counter Culture beans. And thank you Everyman Espresso. Amazing.

Anyone who is looking for anything beyond GREAT coffee at Everyman is missing the point. This place is about a perfect cup - everytime. Sam, the owner, has exacting standards for selecting her beans, extracting the coffee (triple ristretto only thank you) and excellent milk work. While the environment, service or food may not be up to Danny Meyer standards that is all secondary. (In recent weeks Sam has upgraded the food choices and there are now better options.) If you want an EXCELLENT cup of coffee this is one of the FEW places in NYC to get one. If that's not what you are looking for I'm sure you'll be happy at any random Starbucks.

I've been to this place quite a few times now. I tried their iced coffee, soy latte, and breve macchiato.

Bottom line is, it's only coffee, and yes there are many things that can go wrong, but all it really takes for a good espresso to happen are the following ingredients:  a good espresso blend, and a good barista - when the two combine - it's all good.

Please let's not be snotty about the speed of service. They're all doing the best they can to make you your drinks as fast as possible - no need for mean remarks. If you want you coffee fast, go to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts.

I'll definitely go back.

I love this place.  Having recently moved to NYC for Seattle, I've been sadly dismayed at the state of coffee in the city -- even at well-known places like Mud.  I almost driven to Starbucks, until I came across this place -- and I haven't stopped going ever since.

Tip:  Try the Mezzo -- its a pleasingly lighter version of a latte.

The seats may be uncomfortable and the wait may be frustrating, but if you want possibly the best latte you have ever consumed in your life, it's probably worth checking out.  Every person I've sent to Everyman Espresso has been pleased... or more accurately... thrilled with their experience.  It's a no frills joint and well worth every penny.  The espresso is better at Everyman than at Joe.  The Joe latte tastes watery compared to Everyman.  But for those of you who are displeased with the staff or the decor at Everyman... thanks... shorter lines and more espresso for me.

When I am feeling flush (its a tad pricey, but nothing beats the outrageous cafés on the Place du Trocadero) this is a good place to go. No decaf, so for serious coffee drinkers only. Sure they take their time and the decor is utilitarian at best, but it still beats the Starbucks.

Like Obama with Wright, like Oedipus with King Polybus, the agonistic uprising of the son against the father has occurred and, in this case, the fatherless child of coffee houses, Everyman Espresso, has emerged stronger for the struggle. Ninth Street Espresso has nothing on Everyman. Every drink I've had at "The Man" has been in God-shot territory. My dad died of cancer recently, I'm ravaged by bedbugs, thousands of Iraqis have been killed while the newspapers bury them. So thanks, God, for loitering in the espresso and foam at Everyman while the world goes to hell in a handbasket. I guess you choose to locate heaven in the basket of a portafilter.

My husband and I found this place while wandering today and decided to stop in.  I liked that they used Counter Culture coffee especially after seeing that they sold the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.  I waited on a stool while my husband ordered himself a coffee.  I over heard him asking if they were serving the Yirgacheffe and the barrista behind the counter said no.  They got into an exchange and after getting his coffee, we went outside to sit on the garden chair in front of the place.  Hubby then told me he was a bit disappointed because he was hoping they were serving the Yirgacheffe and when he asked the barrista about it she cockily asked him why he was so hung-up with the Yirgacheffe.  To be fair, the cup of coffee he received was very nice, but the attitude of the barrista was sour.  With the amount of coffee bars opening up in the city, this one needs to up its game if it wants to score 4 stars or above from me.
