Neighborhood: DowntownI do like EM, I do. However, I prefer small music stores that you can't move due to the boxes that are towering over your heard. That being said, EM has the most extensive collection of Cd's ever, in what I feel is probably all of Portland; and a waitstaff that will ignore you. Exactly what you want in your record store, and I don't even mean that sarcastically.

This is my idea of heaven. The clickety-clack sound of the CDs shifting as I browse through them, the feel of the plastic cases on my fingers, the thrill of finding an album I was looking for or, even better, finding one I didn't even know I wanted until I saw it.
The staff is very friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the selection is awesome.
Heaven, I tell you. The only thing that could make Everyday Music better is if it smelled like vanilla and they served beer.

Great record store for new and used items. Lacking in the hip hop vinyl department though, other wise you can always find nice used gems at this location!

I have been to two Everyday Music locations on three separate occasions. I took my friends from San Jose, CA recently and they reaking loved it! You see, we used to all work in music stores so this place was perfect for the type of person who knows how to peruse a better than average music store. I got the Science of Sleep soundtrack for $4 (used)! The staff was super helpful! They even let my friend listen to some stuff before buying because, "I know you'll like it enough to buy it!" Wow! That is awesome...he did buy the three CD's the guy recommended, too! I wish they were in California, but it just makes my portland trips that much more special. Oh! If you're downtown, go to the bar/grill across the street (it's a mcmennen's bros place) for great priced grub!

Hands down the most excellent music store around. Get new or used, vinyl or CD formata and they are more than likely to have what your're looking for. I found 3 overseas CD's that i had looked for for years there. It is huge and you can easily waste a day sorting thru their stuff. I really dig their electronic music selection too...

Hmmmm....maybe it's just me, but I f*ing HATE IT when record stores can't be bothered to separate their new and used CDs. I pretty much only buy used CDs, (unless it's a new release from one of my favorite bands) so to have to sort through all the full-price new stuff on my search fro reasonably priced music means that I just won't shop here. To add to the frustration, they have bargain priced "skuf" CDs, but....THEY'RE ALL MIXED IN WITH EVERYTHING ELSE!! I'll admit that my method of shopping for music is different than most, but it's my method, and this is my review. So there.

Everyday Music has become one of my primary stops to find vinyl records. They have a great selection of new and used albums, and while it can't quite live up to Amoeba Records down in LA (but then, who can?) it's definitely one of the best music stores in Portland. I have been a little disappointed by their new CD prices on occasion, as they seem to be $1-2 higher than major chain electronics stores (e.g. Best Buy *shudder*) depending on the album, but then again, I'd much rather support local businesses than a major chain. Also, if you're looking for local music, Everyday Music will have it, so look no further.

I really really like me some Everyday Music. This one in particular I alway seem to walk away from quite a bit lighter in the wallet.
THE GOOD - Selection. Wow. The only real problem with EM is that you have to compete with others with equally incredibly good taste in music and consequently....find the occasional empty divider of your favorite obscure band. Not a bad thing since I generally will go poke around and find a few other things I forgot to look for last visit. Sometimes they have some really hard to find DVDs too. The prices are pretty standard with the occasional bargain to be had. No complaints though. My ass doesn't feel sore when I leave.
THE BAD - Nothing all that bad except you have to find parking, which isn't really their fault.
THE UGLY - This is the only thing I mark the star off for...they should rename the place Everyday Music & Sauna. I'm so glad the temperature is cooling down so I can be semi-comfortable while shopping. They have high ceilings and plenty of lighting...this makes for hot hot heat trapped. As much as I'd like to stay longer, sometimes I leave prematurely...traumatized by the embarassment of being "the sweaty guy". I'm constantly wiping my brow dry here...is it just me?
IN SUMMARY - This is one of my all time favorite music shops in all the places I've lived or visited. The staff is helpful without being intrusive. It's hard to walk out empty handed. I'm going to show up next time in flip-flops, swim trunks and towel around my neck so I can take advantage of the free sauna.

Classic, staple, instituition. I used to cut class in high school all the time to come down here and browse their selection. The skuff bin yeilded so many gems back in those days. the used vinyl section is great. The Jazz and classical part is really good too. One of my favortie record stores ever. Open pretty late too, which is awesome.

My favorite Portland indie music store! It's huge and has a lot of used CDs to sort through. I have to remind myself that I cannot buy too much or I'd be broke. There's also a large classical section for those who prefer that. Now that Music Millennium NW is closed, Everyday is more of a must-see than ever.

So they didn't have the one record I had come to them for, but that's okay. Everyday Music is a goldmine of a music store. It's huge, yes, but it's also full of variety that reaches from the latest releases (yes, Kid Rock and Eddie Vedder were featured prominently on endcaps) to the obscure, rare, and simply forgotten (like the old copy of Thrice's "First Impressions" EP I came across in the Electronica section). A fantastic music store this is.

The Godfather of all Portland music stores. I've been shopping at EM since I was 13 years old and during college relished the times I was home so I could go on a late-night browsing spree. They have the best used section (and prices!) of any record store I've ever been to, including the Amoeba in Hollywood. Take this from a music snob--if you ever visit Portland, make sure you stop by EM after your requisite Powell's visit.

OMG, it's HUGE! And even better, it's full of goodies! I've been to huge used record stores that are full of stuff that is just kinda... meh... but this one is excellent.
If you know what you're looking for, you can probably end up finding a special edition or import version of it for cheap. If you don't know what you're looking for, well... you'll probably end up spending way too much money.
Love their radio station compilations. Was able to net KINK Lights Out 3, 4, and 9, and very fair pricing on all of them.

This is the Powell's (wish it were as big) for dvds, cds & vinyl or the Amoeba of PDX. Open every single day of the year 9am-midnight, you are bound to find a long lost cd to add to your collection here. I just found out you can listen to any cd before you buy :) and the staff here is always helpful.

A music store that is open 365 days a year from 9AM until Midnight...Brilliant! The music collection is amazing and the staff knows their stuff. Just when you think you are about to stump them with some random request for a band from England only 2 people have heard, they pull out the bands CD and give you a first-hand review of the music. I'm impressed!
EM specializes in the weird and hard to find in addition to all the hits. They order unique singles and imports as well. They are always worth a visit to find something unique by your favorite artist. Of course the prices can rarely beat iTunes (unless you find what you want used), but more and more artists are adding extra stuff like DVDs and videos to their packaged CDs that an occasional visit to an actual record store like EM is a must.
The Beaverton location is very large and comprehensive too and is the best place to find music in the western suburbs.
To try and better compete with the digital age EM also now sells used DVDs. They also have a cool collection of new and vintage style posters for sale. It is fun to spend an hour here. The downtown store has an extra classical /jazz room that is terrific.
Does compare to Amoeba in Hollywood (at least in the indie rock stuff) Their electronica section could be a bit stronger, but in general they get it done!

Stopped here during my Portland trip in September. Awesome large selection of CD's and Records. Love how the walls are plastered with posters and notices where local bands will be performing next. I really liked how a patron with numerous piercings and multicolored hair would be rubbing elbows with a guy in a suit at this establishment. The guys and gals behind the counter were really helpful and nice too. My husband found a few rare items he had been searching for a long time. I found a local punk band CD that burned like liquid silver and I adore! If you're over in the Pearl district or craving some tunes check out this shop! We went there more then once because of the large selection and low-cost cds. Excellent store with cheap prices and diverse medley of music.
Okay, picture your favorite little new and used indie music shop. Now multiply that several times, add a couple more rooms, and plop it in the middle of the busiest street in Portland, and you've got Everyday Music.
