Review from Grace L.
Wow. It saddens me to see this place has fallen victim to the lack of snow in the area. I just now called to make sure they were closed. I was saddened to hear that heart dropping message, "Evergreen Restaurant is now closed. We will not be checking our messages." I remember my November visit to this place like it was just yesterday...the place was just that good.
Our waitress was exceptionally friendly. The rustic interior welcomed you with open arms - like walking into a cabin with the fireplace roaring with warmth in the corner. I remember specifically asking the waitress about their antler chandelier and I admired the craftsmanship in their leather covered, nail studded chairs.
As far as the food, nothing fell short of exceptional. The butternut squash soup had a hint of orange that brightened the palate. My tri tip sandwich was flavorful and tender. I even wanted to ask for a side of just the tri tip to take home. Everything all natural, wild caught, or sustainably farmed. They took great pride in that, and it showed.
It's very rare I write reviews for businesses that have closed, but I couldn't go without singing their praises. Evergreen, you will be missed!Listed in: Hellooo Lake Tahoe/Reno!

First review I've ever written.
Don't go here.
Diet coke was bad, really. How do you screw that up.
Limes were rotten, needed a b12 shot
Had to send burger back because it smelled
Then the chicken came and smelled like the bad burger
We all still smell like the bad food a few hours later.
Epic fail
This evergreen shed its needles long ago.
Regards,
Unhappy family -
Review from Dave B.
The first points Evergreen scored with us was the lack of a view. While it's on the main drag in Tahoe City, it's on the lake-side. Restaurants with views seem to seldom have good food.
There was a little weirdness with our service and table location that was corrected before the appetizers arrived. The beet salad was delicious. The heirloom tomatoes were yummy. My main course was OK, but not memorable. The prices were not outrageous, but Tahoe pricey.
We'll likely go back and make a meal out of the apps. Generous portions. Hard to find good food in Tahoe. -

So happy to see the November 6 SF Chronicle review of Evergreen as one of the go-to Tahoe restaurants. http://www.sfgate.com/...
The service, food and wine gets this local's recommendation. -

We have been eating here since the restaurant opened and have never had a disappointing experience. The food, service and atmosphere is ALWAYS exceptional. I'm not sure what planet some of these reviewers are from who have written horrible things about this wonderful family restaurant.

Review from Norman S.
We were getting hungry after driving around the lake and finally find drive by Tahoe City. Evergreen looked promising and we decided to try it. We had the pulled pork sandwich and grilled chicken breast burger.
The place wasn't packed but still took a while for our sandwiches to show up. The pulled pork sandwich was good but not memorably so. Chicken breast burger was dry and also not memorable.
Prices were on the high-side but I suppose you pay for the views. Ok place if you're in the area and are famished. -

Horrible experience during our 1 visit here. There were 12 of us, 8 adults and 4 kids. I'm a bullet point kinda person, so here you go:
Pros:
- There's a kid's section near the front with books and toys. Great for entertaining kids.
- The soup was tasty.
Cons:
- We ordered mac and cheese. Instead of telling us that they were out, they told us 45 min later.
- Our steak was unevenly cooked. It'd be somewhat understandable if the outside was well and the inside was more rare, but it was unevenly cooked even along the outside!
- Both pasta dishes were overcooked and flavorless.
- We ordered 2 pear salads - one was $8.50 and one was $8. Why was one more expensive? Because our friend asked for dressing on the side. We didn't discover this until we saw the bill. Who charges extra for putting dressing on the side???
- It took us over an hour to get our food. The restaurant wasn't even full (it only has 6 tables anyway), so that was confusing.
- The quail appetizer was RAW. -

Good lunch salads. Tasty sit-down service, but somewhat loud inside. Patio seating to side is best & subtly pet friendly!

The reviews for Evergreen should have warned me off, they are very mixed (the lower ones are the more realistic), but with 4 kids in tow I thought let's give it a try for lunch. I would advise against eating outside, yes the view of the lake is spectacular, but it is across a busy street (Highway -28) with a lot of noise and fumes, hardly conducive to a nice dining experience.
Similar experience to most, over attentive bus-boys, I thing I counted four. The food was so-so nothing to rush back for, but no major faults. The big issue - it took about 40 minutes for some pretty basic dishes to arrive - burger; pasta; chicken tenders; falafel - no acknowledgement/apology from the staff. If the kids weren't with me, all hungry, I would have bailed. The lunch menu I thought was pretty limited or lacked many things that excite the pallet.
I can't imagine making a return trip to Evergreen, and in winter that is just not going to happen. -
Review from Dale G.
This is what all restaurants should aspire to be! Was greeted by the owner/chef's wife Heather. When I asked about bringing in a special bottle of wine (a 2000 Ridge MonteBello) she stated no problem. She sat us immediately and introduced us to our waiter Jay. Jay was amazing and being an ex-chef able to articulate how each dish was prepared. This made our mouths water in anticipation. Since it was three of us we decided to try an app and three different main courses.
App:
1 - Mussels in a red curry sauce - Good flavor but we all would have like it with a bit more heat.
Main Courses:
1 - New York w/twice baked potatoes - Steak was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were to die for!
2 - Salmon w/roasted fennel and pickled ginger - Salmon was flaky and fresh and with the picked ginger really nailed it.
3 - Grilled Pork Chop w/sweet corn polenta cake - Didn't taste the pork chop but the polenta was the best i've had. (Bill offered to share the pork chop but I was too busy digging into my NY.)
Dessert:
All you need to do is order the Chocolate Bread Pudding and call it a day. Moist, delicious, and enough to share.
At the end of our meal David (owner/chef) came out to meet us. We raved about all of the dishes and complemented him on the food, staff, wine list, and the service. If Evergreen was closer it would be our go to restaurant for all occasions. Thanks Heather, David, and Jay for making our meal a truly amazing dining experience. We will most definitely be back soon! -

Ate here last night. Had super high expectations. Sadly disappointed.
Hostess was nice and helpful. She helped my daughter pick out toys and books...it went downhill from there. Server was okay. We sat for durations between service. Bus boys were attentive though. Our apps came out and she told us our main dishes were up to and should she bring them out. We said give us a couple minutes. Then brought the food and told us the chef made her take it because my thirty dollar salmon was gonna get overcooked on the hot plate. Annoying.
Food was so so at best. BF had the pasta of the day and I had salmon special. Just ok and average flavors.
One of the helper servers actually came to get my bread plate while I was still eating and took my butter knife and set it on my dinner plate that I was eating from.
Needless to say we didn't even order dessert which we usually do. We were too scared of how much weirder it would get. -

Next time if you're going to give me food poisoning, please tell your server to do it with a smile!
I had to send the salmon back to the kitchen because it was WAY undercooked. To top things off, the server was grumpy all evening. Smile a little why don't you? Only positive thing about this place was the view. One star for causing me to wake up at 2am due to food poisoning.
Evergreen restaurant, you suck. -

Had lunch here again and was extremely happy with the food and the service. Bratwurst and the tri-tip sandwich were both excellent. One of the best places for eats in the North Shore. Can't wait to go back again!

A very mixed review from our experience. There were 7 of us and only 2 people enjoyed their food! My son had the Mussels appetizer which he and my husband enjoyed and my son loved the Halibut. My daughter had a Chicken Ceaser salad which she said was good. The portions were teeny tiny. The steaks were not flavorful at all. My parents had the pasta of the day which was in a watery, soupy sauce that was an unappetizing gray color. Eeeww....
The busboys were very attentive, however our server was awkward and not super friendly. We won't go back...also, VERY pricey for the quality of food. -

So I was FIENDING for burger and found this place had some burger, OMG IT WAS SOOOO DELICIOUS!!! smoked to the perfect flavor and the meat is just soooooo tender.
one thing is the waitress's really pretty =P I normally don't like to leave comments like this but she seem like a super nice person which you don't find many girls that are drop dead gorgeous with a friendly personality.
Anyhow, man i miss that burger.... -
Review from lily y.
good quality burgers (perfectly cooked, juicy natural angus beef) for lunch.

Review from Janet O.
Great decor. Love the spaciousness of the place. The parking situation is much more tolerable than any area in the city. They're in a square called the Cobblestone. There is a movie theater in the area as well.
I love love love the tables and the chairs. They're rich dark wood and the backing to the chairs are dark warm rich sturdy leathers that sets the whole ambiance. It feels very rich and warm as you step into the main dining area.
We came in for lunch around 1 something on a Thursday. There was no wait. There was about a dozen people enjoying their meals.
I had the Falafel Plate. It came with about four Falafel balls. It was perfectly crispy and brown on the outside. Nice and tasty on the inside. When you cut into the nice rich brown color of the Falafel the green burst of color invites you in to a very excellent experience.
Two pieces of wraps came with it. A small portion of freshly diced tomatoes and cucumber is a perfect pair for the pink humus.
What I didn't find tasty was the humus for the Falafel. The texture was more of a unrefined mashed potato and was bland. It could've been better.
I also sampled my partners Bratwurst and Sauerkraut Sandwich. It was ok. I've had better.
We also ordered a couple of glasses of wine. My Riesling was not to my liking.
The staff that served as was a very amiable guy. The whole experience was awesome. The staff that greeted and sat us was wonderful as well. -

Palo Alto, CA
Food was nice, but we had bad service:
waited over an hour for our food to be delivered (1 hour to cook a burger and 30 min for apps, huh? How about 20 mins for a bread basket?);
our orders got all mixed up, steak had wrong temperature and when I got a chance to complain about it to our host, he said OK and walked away with the indifferent face, and yep, nothing happened after. Overall he was ignorant ("I already told your table about the specials, It's your problem that you stepped out and didn't hear it"), rude and his ugly service spoiled the good impression of the place and food.
It's so convenient, when you obligate the big table to pay 18% tips, you can serve however you want and still have the tips. -
Review from Kara V.
I'd had OK experiences here before but lately the last few times the service seemed to be going downhill, but this last time....WILL be the last time. We arrived late in the afternoon and sat outside facing the highway. We had menus from the hostess, so its not like we sat ourselves and they didn't know we were there. We browsed the menu and had decided on what to order, but no one came by. We waited for a while, I didn't time it but I've been out at restaurants to know what feel like the proper amount of time, and this was way longer. So we got fustrated and left. If I'm going to be spending that (not a cheap joint) kind of money, there better be decent service. Ended up at Garwoods down the road.

First time in North Shore and loving the food! Great decor, space, intimate place with a great menu and bar, foodie approved!
Glad we made a reservation because they were all booked and turned people away. We had a great waiter that knew the menu and was fun and attentive. I tried the soup special, miso with mushrooms, the crab roll and I had the quail while my hubby had the steak. Everything was fresh, local sourced and great flavor.
The soup was probably the most forgettable, it just lacked spice and flavor to me and the consistency was bit strange and thick. The crab roll was amazing, lots of fresh crab, avocado and deep fried, how could you go wrong there.
The quail was YUMMY! With greens and a sunny side quail egg and potatoes and pancetta. It was an appetizer but I had it as the main course and it worked out great. The steak looked good too, simple and fresh.
We ended the night with some creme brulee and apple crisp since we were with friends and figured we would share. The desserts were quite large, we would have been OK with just one.
I would definitely come back, it was great food, service and I love the locally sourced food. The chef definitely likes to experiment and combine flavors. -

Carnelian Bay, CA
Very happy with Evergreen. I had been hearing good things and sending my guests here, and it still took a long time to finally get my own self in. Finally hit 'em up once in the summer and once in the fall.
I loved the way they made me feel welcome, even though you could tell they were busy. Got set up with a drink at the bar while they got an outside table ready. There is sidewalk seating in the non-winter seasons, with those overhead propane heater things to take the chill off when it's cooler.
The service may well have been the best I have ever experienced. For me it was the perfect blend of friendly and professional. Really nice people being attentive and efficient without being the least bit stuffy, pompous, overbearing, or annoying.
I'm just an ordinary regular guy with a relatively low gastro-intelligence, so a lot of the details get lost in the shuffle. The main thing for me is eating delicious food and making yummy sounds. There were a lot of yummy sounds that night. I seem to remember corn chowder, heirloom tomato salad early on. For main course the fish special sounded so head and shoulders above everything else that both my dinner companion and I ordered it. For those who are more detail-oriented I think it must have been maybe Mahi Mahi Wicki Wacki Ahi Pahi--i.e. like some really good fish cooked with herbs and sauce and stuff. Oh ya, and dessert.
The thing that blew me away the most was the bill--totally reasonable. Under a hundred bucks both times, two people, including drinking. At other restaurants I've been known to spend more than that just on myself.
Thanks Evergreen, keep up the good work! -

Yummmmm. Perfect meal after a long day of skiing.
MAKE RESERVATIONS - as they do get quite busy and an empty stomach doesn't like to wait.
The cheese appetizer was tantalizing for the taste buds. I love quince paste.
I ordered mussels (that was a special appetizer for the day) as my entree with a side of fries. Needless too say, it was way to much food for me!
It was my birthday (but we never tell the wait staff since I'm embarrassed easily), so we ordered a cupcake to share. I blew out my pretend candle and it concluded a lovely birthday dinner.
The atmosphere was modern but it still felt like we were in the mountains.
Service was beyond fantastic. Not too intrusive but checked up on us plenty. -

My how things have changed at north shore... for the better. The Evergreen Restaurant was the Cobblestone Cafe for as long as I can remember and it always seemed to have no one in it. Definitely not the case with Evergreen.
Its ambience is now warm and inviting with a modern, yet rustic decor. We came here for lunch after a hike in the trails above Tahoe City. Service was great and the waiter was very helpful. I ordered the falafel plate, which is easy to screw up. This one was not. It came with a dressing for a side salad that I didn't care for and the waitstaff immediately picked up on that, came right over to the table and asked if I'd like something else for the salad. Not sure that I didn't make the bitter beer face when I tasted the first dressing. Gosh, I hope not.
My husband got the salmon burger that smelled wonderful and was a good portion.
Their coffee was awesome - always a good sign for me!
Price - very resonable for a Tahoe establishment with great quality.
There's also a note on their menu that says the owners are also nutritionists. It's nice to know that the menu was developed with health aspects in mind. Don't worry. You will not starve here and it's by no means a vegetarian restaurant. -
Review from Jamon B.
Washington, DC
This is by far the best dining experience I've ever had at Lake Tahoe. I came here because of the other reviews, and I was not disappointed.
The food was terrific and the service was friendly and attentive. I had the white sweet potato soup and the salmon special for dinner. Both were great. The soup was slightly too sweet, though, and the dressing used on the salad that came with the salmon was a bit too vinegary for me. Otherwise, it was great.
This place is NOT on the waterfront, however. The other reviews are wrong about that. It's across the street from the water, which really is a big difference at Lake Tahoe.
Also, be aware that Evergreen is pretty expensive. I paid $50 for soup, entree, and a glass of wine. It was more than I expected to spend for dinner on a Monday night. But I guess that's what it take to have a decent meal at Lake Tahoe. Definitely not family dining. The other reviews are wrong about that, too. -

Took our 5 yr old daughter and 3 yr old son to play in the snow for the first time. Long story short, we ended up hunting for a place to eat late in the evening with two extremely hungry kids. Our luck, we stumbled upon Evergreen Restaurant as they were about to shut down. The minute I walked in I was greeted with smiles. The owners were so kind to take a last minute order and were very pleasant and accommodating.
The food was great! My daughter was happy with her linguini w/ red sauce, my son with his chicken and fries...plus he asked for some of sisters linguini and he usually doesn't bother, my hubby with his salmon and black rice and me with my pear pecan salad (yummo!)
I give this place 5 stars and will definitely be back in the future! -

peach gazpacho to die for. falafal. other stuff on the menu, like a beet salad that i wanted to try.
good vegetarian options. good staff. this is a must for lunch or lite din-din. -

My boyfriend and I went here and we are giving it five stars based on the overall experience. Think of this as a holistic rating.
The wait staff was friendly and helpful. Very on top of things. The chef/owner? came out and talked with us several times. He was also very friendly. I appreciated being treated like a local even though we were clearly not. I especially like that they are a sustainable, seasonal restaurant. Something I've come to expect of my favorite big city restaurants.
My boyfriend had the pork chop which was a generous portion. I'm not a fan of pork, so I'll leave my feelings out of it but he ate the whole thing and - AND munched on a generous portion of the sweet potatoes, arugula and pomegranate seeds...a miracle for a boy who believes only in potatoes and tomatoes as viable veggie matter.
I had a great Cesar (so hard to find and yet so satisfying) and shared my plate of white cheddar cheese bacon mac and cheese with BBQ'd quail and a quail egg on frisee with my boyfriend. He also chowed down on the mac n cheese.
We don't normally do dessert but we figured the traffic back to the bay area we were trying to avoid could wait a little longer. We had the bread pudding. Honestly, nothing really called out to me on the dessert menu, and while the pudding was good it wasn't what I hoped for.
All in all it was a hearty satisfying meal with fun flavor combination's a great staff, nice relaxed atmosphere (but modern interior) and it didn't break the bank. Would I give it a Michelin star? No, but not all great meals are served at world class restaurants. We will definitely go back and bring friends during our next ski weekend. -

Excellent. All around excellent.
Location is waterfront, parking was easy, ambiance is comfy casual, servers knowledegable and efficient, portions were good, and finally, food is stellar.
Had the heirloom tom salad, gazpacho, filet mignon w tom risotto, pork chop w drunken cherries n polenta, roasted chicken, and housecut linguine. Everything was phenomenal. Skipped dessert, too full.
Made a res for dinn here while staying the wknd at Squaw Creek. When my sister's husband called at 8p and said he was going to make the trek to Tahoe from the Bay after all, the hostess graciously let us use her computer to get an addl room res, no questions asked.
Will be going back next time Im in North Shore. -

My husband and I are definitely foodie people from San Francisco. We enjoyed a FANTASTIC meal at Evergreen while on a quick getaway weekend to North Lake Tahoe. Not only is the service great, the views beautiful, but the food is outstanding. We ordered our meal to share: 1) Crab Stuffed Egg Roll, 2) Spring Salad, 3) Pasta special of the day, and 4) Chocolate Bread Pudding (as good as the other reviewers have said!). All the ingredients tasted fresh and light.
After our meal, the Chef, came to our table and thanked us for coming. What a treat!
We will definitely be back! -

Expected more based on the reviews. I had a smallish size portion of their special pasta - it was delicious, but luckily I wasn't that hungry. My husband had a burger which was fine, but not worth $15. Food is good, but not exceptional. Prices are high here for what you get. Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful and took the time to help us with choosing good hikes to do in the area.

not quite sure what all the fuss is about at this place. it's a kid-friendly place, but service was pretty poor and slow. salad was decent and warm bread rolls were a plus. but our main dishes were nothing special. pasta and sausage (seemed like store-bought quality) was just ok. fish was a bit dry, lacked flavor. prices were pretty steep for what you get, definitely not worth what we paid

Review from Dana C.
San Francisco, CA
Dang. This place FAR exceeded my expectations. Tahoe City is a small town and doesn't have a whole lot going on, but Evergreen could hold its own with the best of San Francisco or New York etc.
We started with the beet salad, which had a nice flavor balance and beautiful presentation. The goat cheese was smooth and not too rank, hazelnuts nicely toasted, and it was colorful and appealing.
For entrees we got the pork chop and chicken breast, and shared bites. I couldn't decide which was better, perhaps because there was nothing remotely negative about a single flavor that touched my palate. Often food can taste a little monotone or like it's all flavored with the same spice or oil; these plates had so much going on, such complex and developed flavors, my taste buds were applauding. The pork chop tasted like it may have been seared in bacon grease after it was seasoned, pretty sure I don't have to explain why that's awesome. If I did have to pick a favorite component on either dish, I think it would have to be the farro risotto. I am used to pretty creamy risotto with a lot of cheese, and admittedly perhaps not well versed in risotto varieties, (I have no idea what "farro" means, e.g.,) but this was an amazing rice dish. The grains were a little al dente and that light crunch made the texture fantastic. It had a little lemon aftertaste that was also great.
We weren't planning on it but were pretty much forced, by the quality of the preceding dishes, to order dessert. We chose the apple crisp. It was consistent with everything else we ordered- perfect temperature, perfect flavor balance, perfect presentation.
There are few "everyday" things in the course of "everyday" life that make me as happy as an exquisitely delicious meal, and that and a couple glasses of wine had me raving to the waitress, who was sweet and attentive. She said she would pass the praise to the chef, but that "He already knows." That could be taken as cocky in some contexts, but it wasn't how she meant it, and, hell, if I could cook that well I would know it too (and also probably weigh 300 lbs.)
I would suggest Evergreen to those with even the highest standards. -

To be fair, I was really not feeling good the night we went there, but their baked potato soup and salad with bleu cheese helped a little. Really, nothing could be done for me, but everyone else was very happy with their pasta, burgers, etc. The place is run by happy friendly folks who know what they're doing.
I still can't believe my husband ate a third pound burger, but he didn't leave a crumb on the plate. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for dessert - I heard the chocolate bread pudding is to die for.
I can't wait to go back on my next visit! -

Fair Oaks, CA
Never got to taste the food. Lack of common sense from about table hosting from hostess kept us from getting seated. Made reservations for 6 at 6:45pm. By 730 pm I got to watch a table of 5 and table of 4 get seated who did not have a reservation. I peeked in, and to seat the table of 5, they just added a chair to an existing table. If they did that for them, they could've easily added another chair to make it six, there was enough room. When there is a wait this long with no line, and people get seated with no reservation before parties with reservation, the manager needs to address and explain the situation. Not ignore us.... We instead went to rosies cafe down the block and they just as busy but we were seated right away and had some great food!

Review from Emily N.
Los Angeles, CA
I have to say, this place was a highlight of our trip to Tahoe. We were there celebrating a special occasion and picked this place for our one special dinner out. It was a great choice.
First of all, the server was DE-LIGHT-FUL. I didn't catch her name, but she was sweet, informative, friendly, and really enhanced the experience, at least for me. Pitchers of beer are CHEAP ($14 for a microbrew!) and just the fact that I could have a somewhat upscale dinner while sharing a pitcher of beer with my favorite gals is amazing. I have never been to a place of this caliber that has pitchers. Some snooty places in LA should take note, in my opinion.
I wasn't super hungry, so I opted for a cup of the Thai chicken soup which was one of the two special soups that night--yum, yum, yum-- and the BBQed quail with bacon mac & cheese and a sunny-side up quail egg. It was actually listed as an appetizer, but it was the perfect amount of food for just one person. I actually think it works better as an appetizer than an entree if you're not in the mood for a big meal. I also split the beet salad with my sister and it was delicious. The goat cheese was fresh and the mix of golden and red beets was colorful, seasonal, and tasty.
The only real complaint I heard from a member of our group was that when they served her Halibut, they had forgotten to replace her fork, so she was left utensil-less when her meal was at its hottest. Totally a legitimate complaint, but I think that if that's the biggest complaint I heard all night, that says something.
I didn't try a lot of the other meals that everyone else had, but we all left satisfied and full. I think my experience was really shaped by what I ordered because I was so happy with my meal. At least for me, this place was the perfect location to celebrate a special occasion, and I loved the laid-back ambience. It's billed as "casual" dining, but it definintely can accommodate a couple in jeans and fleeces just as easily as a group of ladies dressed to the nines. And you can't beat the price. A place like this in San Francisco or LA would have been more expensive. I think with tax and tip it was about $40 a person or maybe a litlte more, and we had wine, beer, and about 2 courses a person.
In conclusion: Go to Evergreen if you are in Tahoe! -

Great traditional food. Service was top notch, prices were reasonable, and the food was outstanding.
I ordered the tuna, with bock choi, and a soy reduction.. delicious!!
I'd highly recommend it if you are in town and want a higher end dinner without getting slammed with ridiculous prices!
