Actually, 4 stars for everything but the buffet--I wasn't very impressed by what I've had at the lunch buffet.... Anyway, the regular menu items have been good every time I've been in, and the portions are almost too much. I usually leave with a to-go box filled with nan, rice, and leftovers. I haven't tried the full meal option, as I don't think I could come close to finishing. So far, my favorite dish has to be the mixed tandoori grill. I do wish the beers were a bit cheaper, but oh well.

As for the buffet, it just seemed a bit boring. There weren't a lot of strong flavors going on in the dishes--I'm wondering if the spices had been toned down for the masses. I've tried the buffet twice, and both times I was underwhelmed. My advice would be to stick to the regular menu, even at lunch

So my husband and I came here for lunch, we have been to indian buffets from Sacramento, CA all the way up to Tacoma, WA we love indian food, our work sends out of town quite a bit so we eat out quite a bit, our top choice is Indian.

So when I found Evergreen on Yelp, I said " we have to go, I am craving some Indian food" when we arrived it was about 1 pm, there were quite a few people. We were seated immediately, we asked for waters with 1 straw since my teeth are sensative to cold.
We checked out the buffet, there wasn't any tandoori chicken but the waitress said it would be right out so I was happy about that since I love tandoori chicken from the buffet I chose.

    Rice
Chicken Makhanti (not sure how its spelled but its like butter chicken)
    Goat Curry
    Naan
    Vege Curry
    Tandoori Chicken

When the tandoori chicken arrived, I chose a leg and thigh. I ate the leg first it was very tender and moist, didn't pack a lot of flavor like a lot of tandoori chicken I've eaten, but it was still good, the thigh was next and that wasn't very good because it was cooked way to long and dried out to where it was tough. (2 stars)

Next I ate the goat curry, that had so much flavor with a little bit of heat. It was very delicious, I loved it quite a bit the goat was tender and falling off the bones, the sauce held so much flavor, extremely good (5 stars)

The chicken makhanti over rice was delicious, it held quite a bit of flavor to it, and next to the goat was one of the best dishes. (5 stars)

The naan held the perfect crisp texture, and was the right thickness which I enjoyed quite a bit (5 stars)

Now the vege curry, it just wasn't my type of thing to eat I just didn't care for it at all. To me the flavors were off. (1 star)

The service was kind of crappy, plates were kept on the tables for quite a bit. My glass of water was never refilled since we got there, I finally flagged a waitress done after many attempts at trying to get her attention and asked for a pitcher of water. The decor left something to the imagination, it started out indian but then went over to the oregon ducks football stuff, the waitress's were white american women, the cooks were indian. It was just a strange setup from all the indian places I've ever visited.

My over all scoring is I am giving 3 stars because of the decor and how long it took to clear tables and bring water and at how the food tasted. I would come here again, but I think I will stick to the butter type chicken and the goat curry those items were the best for me.

Wow, I'm glad a friend recommended this place, and now I'm sorry I didn't check out all the glowing reviews on Yelp before. After a couple years in London I developed a taste for a fairly specific type of Indian food (whether that be authentic or not). I've tried every other Indian place in town, which all range from mediocre to bad (I'm looking at you Poppi's), and just kind of gave up on finding delicious Indian food here. But then I went to Evergreen!

Evergreen's food was excellent, and that was merely from the buffet. I particularly enjoyed the Saag and the other vegetable curries, while my husband was big fan of the goat curry. The naan was very good too (I didn't try the rice). I look forward to eating here a la carte sometime.

The service was also very friendly. Everyone I saw working here today for lunch was an American hippie girl, wearing beautiful somewhat Indian looking shirts. I don't know if the place is owned by Indians, or if they have Indian chefs, but the food seemed good to me!

I'm not qualified to testify to its authenticity since what I got used to in London probably wasn't that authentic either, but I'll testify to its deliciousness!

Superb buffet, friendly workers, and mango lassis. Do you really need more than that? My favorite restaurant in Eugene. Lunch is my preference, but dinner doesn't disappoint by any means, and the vibe is a little bit classier, if you'd like to take a date.

I have been a regular dinner customer at evergreen for the past couple of years. When we first started eating here, the food was always fresh and delicious. I'm always happy when Indian restaurant's dishes taste distinct from each other, and Evergreen did not disappoint. I love the lamb samosas, the trio of chutneys with papadam, and the fact that my kids and I can get one a la carte dish and one thali, pay a reasonable amount, and still bring home leftovers.

What's more, Evergreen has the best service of any restaurant I've been to in Eugene. Now, Eugene is not known for having good service. In fact, it's generally the opposite. Evergreen's waitstaff are a cut above the norm here. Friendly, attentive, and polite yet gentle and unobtrusive.

I'm giving a 3 star review today because I've noticed the past few times I've been that the freshness has been lacking. Some days are very good, other days are very warmed-over tasting. What used to be an excellent chicken Mahkani tastes like it's made with canned cream of tomato soup! What's more, so did the Muttar Paneer which is just strange. On the thali, some of the side dishes were much better than the main entree. The dal was very nice, and the chana masala.

I would really like to see Evergreen preparing their foods in smaller batches so that dinner quality can be more consistent. I would also like to see the servers recommending the dishes that are freshly made, so that the diners can have an idea about what might be worth ordering. I would REALLY like to see them get rid of the cream of tomato soup, because that might be a deal-breaker for me.

Evergreen is a restaurant run by good people who can obviously cook, with excellent service and affordable prices. I hope that they can sort out their freshness and cost-cutting problems so that I can amend this to a more glowing review in the future.

I have definitely had better Indian food in my life and this is the only place I've eaten in Eugene that serves Indian - but it is my favorite.  Whenever I crave Indian food we head here and it does not disappoint.  I have never been here for the lunch buffet, only for dinner and while the dinners are always $10+ you get plenty of food that often you can get two meals out of (a la carte).  The Thali dinner gives you many side dishes plus a dessert for a few dollars more.  My fiancee always get this while I go for the a la carte option (your choice of food served with rice and naan).  Their naan is amazing and the food is always fresh and delicious!

Keep in mind I ONLY get the same thing here every time (veggie korma) but my fiance keeps it fresh each time and so far nothing but good comments.  At this point, I don't know if we will EVER get Indian anywhere else while we live in Eugene.  De-licious.

If you are going for lunch:  The buffet is $8.95 and the cheapest lunch entree is $9.95.  So, you are pushed toward the buffet, which is okay.  There is enough selection, and the food is good enough, to make this a good choice.  This will not be a cheap lunch, though.

I did not find anything here to be extraordinary, though we were all satisfied by the lunch we had.

A long overdue review for one of our favorite dinner places in town.  We've been quite a few times in the evening and have never been disappointed in the Thali Dinner, which adds onto your entree some soup, a veggie curry side, yogurt, and a small dessert.  Entrees are always delicious and the naan bread is good.  Service is friendly and understated.   It's a bit pricey for what it is, maybe, but it always feels right by the end of the meal.  Definitely a great dinner in Eugene.

I've only been once for the lunch buffet and wouldn't say that it was a five-star experience.   Buffets must be difficult to do well and, while it was good, it didn't match up to my expectations after eating dinner there so many times.  Most of the reviews on Yelp so far seem to represent the lunch buffet, but Evergreen is definitely a great dinner experience.

This is a 4-star joint if you avoid the buffet.  The crammed placement of the buffet table creates all sorts of lambada, naan-jousting and dirty looks as folks travel around the curry carousel.

The Malai Kofta is amazing, especially with Garlic Naan.

Imagine Indian food that melts in your mouth, which you crave with a passion, and reminds you in some way of getting a hearty meal from relatives. Welcome to Evergreen Indian Restaurant. Best Indian in town. Hands down. Seriously, no competition.

It is a delightful, family run restaurant with a wonderful selection of delicious food. Personal favs include the navratan korma, garlic naan, rice pudding, and the saag panir. Definitely splurge on a chai, freshly made. And go tahli (dinner size) if you are hungry. Lunch includes the largest Indian buffet in town and dinner opens up to a wider selection. Service is always wonderful.

I have been a patron since they opened and can't rave enough about how tasty their food is. Mmmm... am wishing I were there now. :)

The naan was good.  The meats were a little dry, especially the jumbo shrimp Tandoori special.  I was actually a little disappointing because I expected the shrimp to be on skewers.  Anyway, I got the mixed combo Tandoori special and it came out sizzling.  I like my food sizzling, but again, the meats were burnt or dry.  I like the curry here, especially the tikki masala.  The portions are decently big for ala carte.  But if you're really hungry, you can order the dinner special for only $2 more and you get all the curry pickings plus the dessert of the day!  I'm not much of a big eater, so I got the ala carte, which comes with rice and naan.

Service is decent, but when it gets busy, it's easy to get overlooked and ignored.  Though it's totally understandable and I'm not a demanding customer.  As long as I get my food, I'm a happy camper.  Lastly, expect to put your clothes in the wash soon after visiting because the scent will follow you.  I don't mind at all because I love the smell of food!  Just an fyi if you're on a date!

The service can be a little spotty from time to time, but the people are always nice when they serve you.  If you go for the buffet, they don't have a HUGE selection, but they have enough, and everything that they do have is excellent.  Definitely would recommend this place to anyone who likes Indian food, and even more so to those who haven't tried it before, as a first timers endeavor.

Maybe I'm spoiled from living in London and eating good Indian food there, but I did not like anything here. The buffet was gross and as another reviewer commented the Chicken Mahkani tastes EXACTLY like Campbell's cream of tomato soup. Super disappointed at the selection and freshness level of food on the buffet. Overpriced buffet for the quality and selection of food. Not a fan, won't be back.

Delicious!  I've only ever been for lunch as they have a tasty, all-you-can-eat buffet for a measly $7.95.  The food is really great, with plenty of options for vegetarians and omnivores alike!

The only problem with the place is that there isn't quite enough room on either side of the buffet, so you often have to squeeze around the other patrons.  This becomes increasingly difficult the more delectable food you partake of.  Still, it's manageable and definitely worth it for the grub!

P.S.  I've noticed that they like to keep the heat really high during the winter, so if you're planning on going be sure to wear a stain-free shirt underneath your sweater or else your date will NOT be impressed.

Eh. We went to Indian buffet here today  and it was really just mediocre. The service was fine but the offerings were totally random. I mean, I like adventure as much as the next girl butt here were none of the following (usual staples) at this buffet: saag paneer (or palak paneer), chicken tikka masala, any sort of flavored naan, regular curry chicken. The tandoori chicken was kind of dry, as one reviewer also commented.

The things they did have were pretty good. I wasn't into the goat curry but my sister said it was okay--interesting. There were spinach/chick pea dumplings which were tasty.

Overall, it is $8.95 a person, including drinks, so I really can't complain too much. If I go here again, I will definitely go for dinner and try other dishes.

Well the only reason I think it's not good for kids is because it draws in a large college crowd so kiddies might pick up foul language.  Besides, the way the restaurant is decorated and organized, it rocks the intimate seating and moodlighting for dates and stuff, not so much for kids to go running around.  But of course everyone is welcome here.

Anyhow!  The indian food here is wonderful!  Their naan is yummy, and so long as it tastes as good as it does, I don't care what it's made of.  They are one of the best restaurants in regards to their mastery of spices to make food so flavorful.  That's true Indian cuisine in itself.  Their sauces pack some heat, but the flavors are so fantastic that I ignore the fact that I suck at handling spicy food and eat up.

I must admit that not all of their curries are tasty, some are better than others.  The Lamb Saag (lamb with spinach) is one of their best dishes, along with the Chicken Tandoori.  Traditional Indian beverages are also great.  Service wise, they are very polite, considerate, and soft spoken, which fits the environment that you dine in.  I really like the wait-staff here cause they're so attentive to my water issues.  Haha, I can't handle spicy-heat very well so I scarf down water like nobody's business, and these waitresses were on the ball with water service ^^  Kudos!!

I desperately wanted this place to be amazing, and well...it isn't. the service is great and the tall beers were always nice but the food just isn't up to my high standard of Indian food. Most Eugenians have novice Indian palettes and therefore would probably love Evergreen, therefore I hate saying don't go.
if you've never had Indian and feel like being adventurous, go here not Indian House.

I'd say the best Indian food in town. I've been going since they first opened. Their take out containers are a nice size and can be packed full getting your money's worth!
The ventilation system lacks a bit on a hot day. I always feel like I go back to work smelling of curry.
The buffet has a nice variety including goat, which isn't always found around here. Very tasty curries, lot of vegetarian options.

An Indian lunch buffet in a steamy jungle just off Franklin? Sign me up!

I would probably love to take a laptop here to eat a few plates from Evergreen's well-stocked buffet and do some homework, but I'd be worried about water damage from the humidity that this place maintains. You've got little chance of seeing anything through the fog if you bring your glasses instead of contacts.

If your hairdo can take such a humid assault, and you can handle the close quarters around the buffet, this place is great.

By "waiter service", it's like most Indian lunch buffets, they will seat you and take drink orders, but during the lunch buffet (WHICH ENDS AT 3PM), it's your responsibility to load stuff on your plate.

They've got a lot of good choices, some favorites that are always there and a few rotating dishes. I know vegetarians who like to go here too, so there must be enough choices to keep one satisfied without flesh.

Don't forget the spicy mint sauce in the salad bar in the corner.

I haven't been able to find really satisfying veggie fritters (pakoras) since Shanti on 13th turned into whatever it is now. Evergreen's pakoras are pretty good but also aren't quite awesome yet. If anybody does know who can do them well, let me know.

I've never been during the dinner hours.

Maybe it has the fact that the conference I was attending had the shittiest food ever or maybe it was because the minute I walked in I was impressed. Our host were very generous and pleasant.  From the outside Evergreen doesn't look like much but inside is clean and the bathrooms are as well. Every dish I tried only made me want to keep eating, beyond comfort.  The jasmine rice was delicious just on it's own and the naan was fucking spectacular.   The host kept the rice and naan bread coming since we were a group of 16, for no extra charge.  The samosas were huge and came with a delightful raspberry chutney.   I was so glad we found this place, especially since our conference had been such a disappointment, it provided us with a satisfaction not only in our taste buds and belly's but  in the hospitality provided.

I had lunch here for the first time today, and it was pretty good.  The buffet lunch is 8.95, which is a good deal, actually, considering the quality and the number of selections (plus the naan was good.  All-you-can-eat naan!  Yay!).  Lots of vegan/vegetarian choices, too.

Somehow, though, I wasn't really excited about it.  I felt like everything was good but could have been better.

    Buffet hours are 11:30 - 2:30

When my tasters first hit the Chicken Makhani, I dropped all delusions of Indian food being full of adverse spices.  This was my first experience with Indian Cuisine.  I've been back about 5 times, and each time I'm as excited as the trip before.

There's usually a spread of ~4 curries, Bhaji (Indian fried onion fritters,) bbq'd lamb drumsticks, nan, vege's (steamed broccoli,) and a rice-pudding type dessert.

Forget the dessert though, that's pure and simple wasted space with the buffet as stacked as it is.  Shame on you.

Can be humid, but it never bothered me.  It's the character of the place anyway.

Price point for a Indian lunch buffet was atrocious, 8.95 on a Saturday afternoon with a drink almost 11 bucks? Not cool. Eugene is lacking in good Indian food but that is not reason enough.

I really did like the food so I would entertain coming back and ordering off the menu or getting to go items. The pakoras, naan bread, and chicken dishes were solid. I've heard you can get a large to go container from the buffet for around 5 or 6 bucks. I'll probably go that route next time.

This is not on par with some of my favorite spots in Portland for inexpensive Indian food like Swagat on NW 21st (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) but there is no sense comparing the two, Eugene is just too far behind in this food category.

In the hierarchy of Indian places in Eugene this is worlds above Bomaby Palace on 13th but below Taste of India on Hilyard. Taste of India is not as casual so I might lean more towards the presentation at Evergreen.

We stopped here for dinner because it was close to our hotel and we had it recommended. Good choice, as it turned out. The restaurant is small, located across the street from the University of Oregon campus and obviously draws a big school crowd. We can see why: the food is excellent, servings large, and the prices are reasonable.

First, it's suitable for meat-lovers or veggie fans. The menu is diverse with six Tandoori selections, four Biryani choices, six seafood entrees, 15 vegetable possibilities and a variety of lamb and chicken dishes. Prices range from $9.95 to $13.95 for most items. The Ginger Chicken was good, but the half dozen side dishes that came with it were superb: veggie curry, Dal, Sambar, Nan and rice. The Chicken Vindaloo was excellent, finely flavored and thick, and once again the sides dishes were perfect. The meal includes desserts, the mango ice cream made for a tasty finish.

The service was unusually friendly and efficient even in a crowded restaurant. We'd be pleased to find this establishment in a much larger city and would plan on dining there regularly. Go Ducks!

Seriously everything I've eaten here has always been SO good. But once I found out that they have cheese naan, I cannot stop going there. SO GOOD! Service is always good and friendly. Food is so GOOD!!!! I've never had authentic Indian so I am not sure how it matches up- but I dont care. It SO good.

This place has great food. The Marsala is not as thick as I would like it but it's still good. Love the Naan and Veggie Samosa's.
The restaurant is beautiful and is packed every time I go.

I'm always happy to eat here.  Perhaps I am not qualifed to give a review because I haven't had many other examples of the region's cuisine, but Evergreen only gets 3 stars because so many of their dishes taste the same at the buffet.  Same color, same consistency, same flavor.   I like Taste of India's pakoras, tandoori chicken, naan and mint sauce better.
That said, they do routinely have some buffet dishes that I haven't found elsewhere in Eugene.  Last week I really enjoyed the turnip masala.  If you like goat, there's goat a-plenty.

Neck bones in my goat stew from the buffet!  To me, this isn't some quirky shortcoming, but an unacceptable and dangerous feature in a dish that is not meant to be picked-at, like one might do with tandoori chicken.  If it was posted somewhere, I sure as hell didn't see it!  On my first bite I nearly chipped my tooth because I wasn't in the "know" and am lucky I didn't choke on it.  If you're going to use the cheapest cuts of meat possible, chock full of bone, take five minutes to pick out the bones--the money you're saving with using that meat can surely cover the labor of removing the bones!  The rest of the buffet was far less threatening and featured a nice assortment of dishes and chutneys, many of which are less commonly found at Indian buffets in this region of the country.  Eat here, sure, just pick at your food thoroughly as you do!

Mmm.  Eugene's best Indian food.  Strong selection, good service, passable buffet, extremely fair prices.  On all these fronts, Evergreen is a winner.

On the other hand, I haven't had a single dish here that isn't far better in places with a large Indian population.  I hate to break this to you, fellow Eugeneans, but Evergreen is yet another local ethnic restaurant hopelessly dumbed down for the honky folk.

I'm torn between grading Evergreen on the Eugene scale (where it probably deserves four stars) and on the overall scale (where it's a 2.5 at best).  I'm splitting the difference.  Go, but if you've ever eaten at a good Indian place in New York or London (much less in India, I imagine), prepare to be disappointed.

Five stars for the goat curry!  Had that a lot in India but you don't see it much in America.  Don't ignore the tasty cartilage - yes that's good to eat too....

The mango-apple lassi in the salad bar was mucho mangoey - they must use them pretty green to get this flavor.  I had four bowls of it!

The pakoras were small - no big chunks of vegies but still tasty.

All but two items (the nan and the gulab jamun) were wheat-free.  It's nice that they think of that.  They were very helpful in letting me know what contained wheat when I asked, unlike some places.....

There was a mushroom curry, a mixed vegetable masala, a hot rice pudding (what to do with this, when there is a much tastier dessert in the form of the mango-apple lassi?)  There was a mango chutney, very spicy and oily.

One dish was called "avial" - I was unfamiliar with this and tried only a tiny bite, not enough to form an opinion.  Next time I'll hafta eat more. It's vegies in a white sauce.

A previous review mentions more items found in the buffet.

On my next trip I'll focus even more on the goat curry and the apple-mango lassi.  Mmmmmmmmm!

The price in Feb. 2009 was 8.95 for the buffet.

Compared to what you can get at the same price in Queens or Chicago or Cambridge -- perfectly spiced courses presented with class -- Evergreen's pretty mediocre. But as far as Oregon goes, Evergreen is about as good as it gets. Always enough at the buffet for a vegetarian, too.

decent food, love the goat curry. service is a little hit and miss, some of the people seem a bit awkward or spacey. atmosphere is not as good as Taste of India

I've only had the buffet, but what a buffet! There are always several great vegetarian dishes, one or two chicken dishes, tandoori chicken, naan, two rice choices, and various surprises. The dishes are a bit different every time I come, and always good. Lovely people working there as well.
