I don't know how many superlatives can fit into this review space, but I can say I would use all of them!

This honestly may be one of the top five bakeries on the East Coast.  I have never been to one that is better, anyway.  You know, everybody says there is no bread in the US as good as in France?  Well this place disproves that statement.  Its croissants are as good as any I have had in France (and I have traveled extensively there - over several decades).

The prices are a bit on the high side, especially for this rural community, but the product more than makes up for it.  Going there may be a bit of a splurge for me, but it's still a treat.

Frankly, a trip to this place from Baltimore, Washington, or Philadelphia is worth it.

    Dined again on 11/22/2011:

Okay I'm uping my rating to 5 Stars.... Here is why!!

I've been back twice since my first rating and have sampled even more of their delectable artesian bake goods. I had this wonderful thing called a "Sun Bun" filled with cinnamon and sugar coated. It may look like an ordinary bun, but it is far from ordinary. One bite and you will find the buttery goodness and crispy flaky tecture of the dough just melts in your mouth because it is a croissant that's made to look like a bun. OMG....so Yummy!!!  So much for my cholesterol....LOL!!! (see my pictures)

Also they have several varieties of "breakfast" croissants. Yesterday I had a Spinich and Feta cheese croissant, mmmmm.... YUM!!! So good!!!

Don't tell my wife, but I've fallen in love, OMG this place is fantastic!!

Great coffee, and if you have the time you can get a real mug instead of a paper cup and just sip and refill. Try a Ginger snap with your coffee....OMG, mmm MMMM YUM!!!

This is a rare find, food that tastes better than it looks, and these baked goods look so good they will make you salivate instantly the moment you see them.

A gem and a must stop when you are in Chestertown, MD or in the area. Spoke this morning with Doug about his amazing baking. We had croissant, Almond croissant and scone. Kid loved them so much we had to get seconds. Beautiful breads. So much to try we cannot wait for our next visit.

This was the best pain au chocolat I have had since my trip to France (where I started my obsession with this melt in your mouth goodness.)  The quality at Against the Grain is amazing.  Everything is baked fresh.  The bread looks perfect, but I only tried the muffins and croissants.

Against the Grain is a bakery is Chestertown with a European/country feel.  The room is clean and bright (with nice touches like fresh flowers) and the coffee is very good.  The prices are not cheap, but it reflects the quality of the baked goods.  It was $2.50 for a croissant or muffin and $3.50 for the more specialized baked goods (like pain au chocolat.)

The location is about a half a block down from the main intersection of town.  So, it is easy to miss if you are just strolling around.  However, I encourage anyone to seek out Against The Grain.  This great spot made my morning feel like a European vacation.

A charming bakery that clearly takes pride in every aspect of their business. The baked goods are exceptional-- try a Sun Bun, if they aren't sold out, and get a loaf of bread to go. The ambiance is bright, clean, and pleasant whether it's sunny out or pouring down rain. Against the Grain is a credit to Chestertown as a whole. Strongly, strongly recommend.

Against the Grain is crazy good! Their located about a block down from the main intersection of town (like Lana F. said) and fountain park! Every one who works there always has a smile on their face and are ALWAYS happy to help you! The inside is always clean and orderly and it's a great place to sit down with friends and enjoy one of the many great things on their menu! On First Friday (a little gathering the first friday of every month were the shops stay open a little later, and all parents sit outside of the legendary Play It Again Sam's while their kids meet up with friends after school and hang out!) My friends and I always make sure to get the Sun Buns, Against The Grain sells....there amazing!
    Defiently check it out!

Against the grain is charming, and there's a big wooden table that creates a nice friendly vibe. That said, I thought the baked goods were meh. I had a scone that just okay, and I tried some bread that was very weird. I'd recommend a sunbun, which is loaded with enough cinnamon-sugar and butter to make anything good.
