Everett's is hands down my favorite bar in Arcata! As for the unhelpful man, that would be the owner. Locals in their 30's have stories about how they would walk in and not get served. It was strictly and logger bar. Some of the kids never gave up trying. Eventually they'd win him over.
He doesn't work at the bar so much anymore. His daughter has taken over day to day operation of the establishment.
Donna (my fave) and Betty (close runner up) are transplants from Toby & Jacks. Totally T & J's loss. They do an awesome spread for St. Patrick's Day. Thirsty Thursdays get your cheap microbrew on and a pint glass to boot!
I always prefer Everett's when HSU is on holiday (summer and winter break). It's just the locals and a few straggler college kids.
As for ambiance, this is classic dive all the way! I mean seriously, who doesn't love being in a room full of game heads!
Attending HSU in the mid 90's, this was the bar that was off limits to students. When I recently returned to Arcata after a 12-year haitus, I had getting a drink at Everett's at the top of the list. Yay ... it was everything I expected! A variety of taxidermied wildlife on the wall (including a jackalope), old booths with saggy seats, older ladies mixing the drinks and a pool table. Strong drinks and fair prices, no attitude.
The women on the phone was an unbelievable bitch. The bartenders suck, and the management is horrible.
Everett's is crying out to be used as a set in a David Lynch film. As one of the four main bars on the Arcata Plaza, Everett's stands alone in its unusual atmosphere and bar staff. The walls are adorned with dead animal head "trophies" every bit as stiff as the cocktails you'll consume. The combination of my two Maker's Mark and ginger-ales (was there ginger-ale in there really?) the dim lighting, the funky jukebox and my oh my - the extraordinarily self-expressed bartendress - made for an experience that was truly theatrical. I will spare the blog-like details but suffice to say more than one person's breath was held at a climactic moment.
Just go there and drink for yourself. It doesn't hurt to be really, really into absurdity and moments you couldn't possibly script out better than life itself. For real.
An expansive bar which attracts most of Arcata's youth methinks. Lots of taxidermic schlock, but somehow doesn't seem to add to the logger essence, but you can get hammered just like paul bunyan.
I miss Everett's so much. I liked it because it never got crowded. I liked it because it had a good jukebox. i liked it because the bartenders were friendly. i loved it because it has an outdoor patio that i spent a good portion of 2003-2004 inhabiting with vodka tonics and sweet dreams cherry cigarettes in hand. I also put back many a pitcher with friends as we giggled histerically until we were good and drunk and ready for the stumble home ( a mere 2 blocks away) Despite my feelings of nostalgia, Everettes is just a cool bar. It's open and dark with animal heads and worn leather booth seats, a checkerboard floor, and a laid back dive bar feel. I wish i was there, or that it was here......
OMG, the old bartender here is just evil. The most unhelpful man ever! you ask him to think of a drink for you and he asks ..do you like rum... I said yes.. he recommends a rum and coke!.. wow.. thank god he helped me. this place is always dead... lame lame bar.. not even worth stepping into.
Where am I? This place needs a remodel bad. The drinks are stiff, service is pretty good and the smoking area is a plus but the place is sooo ugly and the music is sooo bad
