What do we want for breakfast??
Evan's Kitchen!!
When do we want it??
Now!!
Regular Review:
It seems that I only go into Evan's when I am a hot mess. As I mentioned in a previous review, I'm going through a break up of my six year engagement. It's an ugly, sordid affair. That's why I'm happy to report that Evan's has, for only $9, unlimited mimosas. Hells yeah!! Let's do this Evan's!! It kind of reminds me of brunch in NYC, where everyone pays a flat price for unlimited drinks and proceeds to get blasted. It's a nice, positive way to start your morning. I always feel better after I leave. Drunksies!
I'm in love with the Esperanza omelette. It's so good, I don't even want to talk while I'm eating it. Jack cheese, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, chorizo..... Holy snaps this is really good. I'm also a big fan of the crab cakes benedict. I should note that I really hate runny yolks. When I eat them, it makes me feel like a monster eating a baby chicken (sorry but that's how I roll). But also, having been a server at a breakfast joint before, I know how lame it is for the chef when you order something poached hard. Plus, the dish ceases to be eggs benedict once you do that. So anyhow, I ordered my crab cakes benedict, and the yolks were reasonably well done. That made me very happy. Of course, I was on my fourth mimosa, so I probably would have been happy with those rectangular hash browns in a rectangular box from McD's at that point. No, just kidding, I knew what I was eating....
Dinner is also wonderful here, but I really prefer the breakfast. Oh before I end this most dizzy of reviews, I also want to say that their coffee is delicious and fresh, which is very important. It's not as important as saving the polar bears, but still, very important.
That's enough.
Came here for dinner on a thursday night. I looked around and couldn't help but notice that the people dining here were mostly older folks. Then I realized that they may be thinking the same thing when they look at me. Perhaps this is my age group and this is where I belong.
Regardless, I had the chicken fried steak. It's covered with awesome gravy. I believe it's the same gravy that accompanies the biscuits during breakfast. That gravy would make a pair of old workboots taste good, so you can imagine what it can do to a tender and lightly breaded fried steak. Enough said.
The seafood linguine was also delicious. There were whole clams and chopped up clams for the sauce which made the sauce very clammy in a good way.
I can't afford to eat like this every night, but it would be a nice treat every once in a while. There are many items on the menu, and I plan on trying more of them.

Boy howdy! That gravy really is something else. I had Evan's Favorite omlette (ground beef,… Read more »
I have eaten here twice and both times I have been disappointed.
First time I went for breakfast and I ordered the Eggs Benedict with shrimp and my boyfriend ordered the Eggs Benedict with steak.
My shrimp were microscopic and smelled like they were a little bit on the fishy side and my boyfriends steak was bland.
I have heard a lot of people say they were good so I went here again tonight trying to give them a second chance thinking maybe breakfast isn't their forte.
I took my little sister here and we ordered the cheese tortellini which came with a side of vegetable beef.
The soup was good sorta tasted like it had been stewing all day. And the pasta wasnt bad. But the thing is I could have went to the store and bought a package of tortellini pasta and a can of beef soup for cheaper then one order of their pasta.
It was like going over to your parents house for a home cooked meal and having to pay for it. Pretty Lame if you ask me....
Very good food, if you are willing to wait 20 mins for your food. Waitresses are very rude. But I keep going back because the food is really good.
We hired Evan's Kitchen to cater our daughters wedding last Saturday. Menu of two salads, garlic bread, pasta, mashed potatoes, and Chicken for 130 people. Throughout the wait for the wedding Evan's worked with us to tweak the menu, staff showed up timely, setup was great, and guests raved about the food, as flavors were great and food was hot even to the last person in the buffet line. Yoshi and other staff did a great job in coordinating and keeping on top of things! Wished they'd left any remaining food in the fridge, as wedding party would have scarfed later, hehe.
Restaurant is great place to go too, good breakfast and lunch (haven't tried dinner). Oh...new place (bar) where Shakey's used to be "The Corner" will have Yoshi running the kitchen...should be good. Opening soon!
Have you ever sat around your house and thought to yourself...hmmm...I could really use some bad service right about now? Well, if that thought crosses your mind on a Sunday morning, go on over to Evan's Kitchen and get ready for some abuse.
I have had catered food from Evan's Kitchen before and I absolutely LOVED it so I suggested to my boyfriend that we go there for brunch. I was really disappointed. We had horrendous service even before we got there. I called and was treated rudely on the phone when I just asked if we could make reservations.
We were seated outside and it took around 10-15 minutes before anyone even acknolwedged our presence. When I asked for sugar with my coffee, the server took the sugar off the table next to us and set it on my table. I was really confused by this because she didn't even ask the poor people if they were done with it!
The food was just ok. I had the crab cake bennedict and my bf had the veggie scramble. The Crab Cake bennedict was way too salty. And I am a big fan of salt - it was even salty for me! The veggie scramble was really plain and didn't have a unique flavor to tie it all together. I could have made it at home, and I could have made it a lot better!
We used an $8 off coupon, and our brunch still came out to $16 -- I felt ripped off for the food and service we got. But oh wait, there is more. The BEST part of my dining experience was going inside to pay for our food. The two girls inside were bitching and moaning about another person that worked there and were talking shit about him right in front of me! It was hysterical. Who does that?!
Went there for breakfast. Looked similar to an old b&b. Kinda smelled like an old folks home. Pretty basic grease diner fare. Florentine Eggs benedict was pretty good, although I've had better. Bacon was delicious! Seemed like nothing out of the ordinary. Service could have been better. go back... We shall see.
Dear Evan,
I'm a little miffed about the performance today.
My eggs are never, EVER cooked wrong at your restaurant. They were today. I got a medium fried egg on my crab cakes benedict when I ordered mine poached hard (The way I ALWAYS get it.) I know you guys know who I am back there. Is this some sort of really mean joke? Runny yolk makes me wretch, Evan. Literally, that yellow goop makes me want to hurl.
I'm too lazy to go back to the restaurant and wait for a new crab cakes benedict. But this has really, REALLY ruined my Saturday, and it will slightly ruin Saturdays in the future when I have to check my eggs before I leave. Technically, I paid 18 something for fruit, potatoes, and a cup of coffee. The fruit was overpriced.
Evan, there's too many young people working for you. The girls out front barely acknowledged me last time. I know they're our future, but can't you have someone around to regulate them? One of them was loudly eating in the office. I've never seen this chaos here. I've never had my egg wrong. I know if you were there this would NOT have happened. Evan if you fired someone, HIRE them BACK!
With nothing but love,
A very upset and hungry J.
UPDATE: I changed it back from four to five stars. I've been feeling guilty all night about this, Evan. I was just upset. I'm sorry.

My last visit left me wondering if I'd ever come back again.
My husband and I visited the morning after Valentine's day for some breakfast. We were greeted by a friendly young man who led us to our table. The restaurant was half-full and the waitress seemed to be nice to everyone BUT us. I wonder if she is the same one that Katie T. wrote about in her review?
Anyway, the waitress cut me off in the middle of my order and then looked at my husband impatiently for his. It's a good thing I didn't (GET TO) order anything beyond my breakfast plate because there was something off in the taste that day. And the gravy? The magical gravy? Someone had dumped half a canister of black pepper in there.
My sister-in-law says that you're emotions can be transferred into the taste of the food you cook. Apparently the chef was in just a crabby a mood as the waitress.
I'd like to try it again because my first experience was so great but this past visit has left a sour taste in my mouth. Literally. I probably won't chance it for very long time.

Brunch review only: Our food was mediocre to bad, and far too expensive for anything less than delicious at brunch. I pride myself on having good suggestions for meals out, and finding that great new place my friends haven't been to, and I spent the rest of the morning apologizing, even after I paid the bill because I felt bad asking someone else to pay for bad food at a place I suggested we check out.
The good: There were herbs growing in the planters out front, which bodes well for dinner, the coffee was pretty good, and there was cholula sauce on the table.
The bad: My $8.50 "La Mexicana" omelet (same cost as a Tower omelet, and more than a Dad's omelet plate) was mediocre until I tasted the instant-mix-made guacamole. I now know what people mean when they claim they can taste the preservatives in something - it was gummy and artificial tasting. The fruit I got in a tiny bowl was underripe melon and grapes - I had it in place of potatoes, but if you order it on it's own it's about $3.50 (for $3.50 at Dad's, you get a huge delicious bowl or diverse fruit). The toast was toast, but the jam they brought out in packets had liquefied - they must be sotring it somewhere hot in the back. Breakfast companion ordered the Monte Cristo Sandwich - about $8 and was like something from McDonald's.
I did not have the biscuits and gravy or the eggs benedict, which are apparently their specialties, but I won't ever be back to find out if they are good. We ordered pretty basic stuff, and were very disappointed. Makes me want to post reviews of all the other good brunch spots in town.
I've got to agree with Cindy. After reading so many great Yelp reviews, I was expecting to leave giddy. Instead I left sort of sad that people's expectations are low enough that Evan's gets a solid four stars on Yelp.
First off, the service was incredibly lackluster. She popped by to refill our coffees, but when I asked a few simple questions about the menu she was completely uninformative and kind of rude. An example:
"Would you like fruit or potatoes?"
"Hummm...What is in the mixed fruit today?"
"Well it's always good."
"Okay. Do you know if it has pineapple in it? I'm allergic"
"Sometimes it does."
....(me waiting for her to offer to check)....
.....
"Um. Well I guess I'll just have the potatoes"
For such great Yelp reviews I expect a breakfast place to have something special going on--either in atmosphere or food. Obviously it wasn't the service, and the decor is nothing special either--a bunch of the clunky oak dining sets my grandma owned in the late 1980s with those boring country chicken pictures on the wall. The restored booths are a nice try, but don't make up for the rest of it.
So it must be the food that makes it so great...Only it wasn't that either (at least for me). I had the California Benedict with spinach subbed for the tomato (another big eye roll from the waitress). It was decent, but nothing special. The hollandaise didn't have much kick to it and was runny. The side potatoes were good though--nice and crispy on the outside with onions cooked in. But again, for such rave reviews on Yelp I expected better than the little packets of Smucker's jam they served with my husband's toast.
Obviously I'm not in the majority feeling sort of disappointed with Evan's, so perhaps I'll try it again someday and hope for a better experience.
My husband makes some of the best biscuits & gravy around. So with that he is on a search for someplace that makes them better than he does (don't think that's gonna happen.) So this is the first place we thought we should try; it's close to home and I had read/heard good things. Maybe it's just me, but I thought morning gravy should be white in color; not brown!!! Nah, this place does not compare to the hubs biscuits & gravy, in anyway, shape or form.
I did have the eggs Benedict (original style); they were good, but could have used more sauce. A little on the dry side....
Our service was great, despite what other Yelpers have said. We may go back to try the dinner menu; and the upcoming pepper-fest sounds really cool.
Another fan of the gravy, the stuff that dreams are made of. The crab cake benadict is a favorite of my wife's, and the little one loves the pancakes (and eating her Daddy's eggs!) We live in River Park so the location is perfect for us, and cannot understand why anyone goes into Crepe Escape with this place around the corner and Rolle a block away.
The kids play corner is completely gone now, too bad for us but hardly a deal breaker. One day we will get a sitter and make it in for dinner, as long as there is that gravy...
The turkey burger here is the best I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. Never in my life have I been more satisfied by not eating red meat.
The service, despite other reviews, was wonderful. I usually stick to water for my beverage choice and I find that many places look down on that because it's free, and therefore are VERY casual about refilling it. And I drink A LOT of water. But my glass was never empty. She did pour water all over the table once, but mistakes happen and she was very nice and apologetic. That is more than enough for me.
My red-eat-meating counterparts informed me that the french dip was divine (3 people in our party of 6 ordered it). If you have room for dessert, their menu looked impressive with many different pies and cakes to choose from. Suffice it to say we didn't.
The experience was only heightened by a fervent debate about why you would purchase the random photos of other people's families we found for sale in the antique shop across the parking lot.
Evan's is a Yelp darling and I have wanted to go have breakfast there for a while to see if the restaurant lived up to its Yelp reputation. Sunday presented a perfect opportunity - my sister was in Sac from San Diego, and her friend was here from Reno. A couple out-of-towners, my BF Mike, our friend Lyle and I rallied over to Evan's on Sunday morning with some pretty intense hunger.
Evan's definitely delivered. Between the 5 of us we had the Corned Beef & Hash, Turkey Fontina Panini, Chicken Spinach Salad, Huevos Rancheros and Meatloaf Sandwich. I have been dieting lately, so the Chicken Spinach salad was my actual meal. I begrudgingly ordered it - avoiding the creams, cheeses and butters that make delicious breakfasts. The salad was awesome though! Maybe not THAT healthy (it had some cheese, cashews and bacon) - but it was light, fresh and delicious.
I sampled a little bit of everyone's food and was impressed by all of it. There is much more to try, however, so I will be back. I would like to try all of the salads (especially the seafood salad) after tasting how delicious the Spinach and Chicken salad was!
The big wooden tables and chairs are cozy and make you feel right at home. Service was perfect - coffee was never empty once. This is Sacramento's new greasy spoon.
I decided to take the boyfriend and the kid here for Sunday brunch after Farmer's market yesterday. The parking lot was packed including the restaurant. When my boyfriend put our name down we were told it would be a 10-15 minute wait and it turned out to only be 10 minutes. My boyfriend ordered the Monte Cristo Sandwich which he enjoyed (and took half of it home) but he complained that his potatoes were not washed thoroughly (sometimes I think it's just the OCD) and I ordered the Crab Cake Benedict and we split a side of the biscuits and gravy. The kiddie was kind of in a bad mood and would not eat his macaroni and cheese.
Anyways, the food... it was good, but not great. I liked the hollandaise sauce, my eggs were poached perfectly, not too runny, not too hard. Usually when I order crab cakes at a restaurant they are either hit or miss, but I liked them a lot at Evan's Kitchen. They were really big crab cakes too! One thing I would have liked better was to have my English muffin toasted more. It wasn't crispy and I felt like it was warmed up in a microwave. The biscuits and gravy were alright, the biscuit wasn't very flaky and a little chewy for me but the gravy is really flavorful. Just the right amount of spice and it wasn't too thick or heavy.
Our server wasn't anything special, he seemed kind of annoyed with all of us his tables, but the manager I presume, Philip came by and he talked with our kid which I appreciate because he was genuinely funny and nice and invited us back. Philip's customer service is the only reason why I would ever try Evan's Kitchen again. Evan's is moderately priced and I spent a little over $50 which included a 20% tip. Overall, breakfast was an okay experience but if I'll come back to Evan's I guess I need to try them for dinner to see how they are as a whole for a restaurant. I'm still looking for a nice Sunday brunch or a good breakfast spot in general... if you have any suggestions, please tell me!
It wasn't easy to find this place since it's hidden away in a part of Sac I've never been to, the Antique Row, maybe cuz I don't antique? It's a shame that I never knew about this place b/c it's right by Sac State and I could've gone here when I went to school there. In any case, I got http://Restaurant.com gift certs here since I found pretty good reviews on yelp here for Evan's. Husband and I decided to try it out, we were going to go on Valentine's day but they were all booked up. So we went the next Saturday between lunch and dinner time (like 3:30/4ish) and it was basically empty but for us. The waitress was the tall, slim, Hispanic (I think, she spoke Spanish to kitchen staff) and she was pretty nice and patient (I was very indecisive and she had to come back a couple of times when she checked to see if we're ready to order and I was like, uh, not yet, sorry...).
Husband wanted something very homey (and deadly but now that I think about the menu, everything on there can help you get a coronary) and got the meatloaf sandwich which was very good (slightly salty but overall delish). I got the Turkey melt sandwich on foccacia and the bread was really good, the cheese (forget what kind) was good too, but my husband's sandwich was still the winner.
The waitress was really nice about the $10 gift cert we had and said lots of people use it so the meal came out to less than $15. I thought the prices seem a bit steep but the food is pretty good. Probably won't go without using a gift cert but I have lots of time thanks to http://Restaurant.com deals. We plan to go back but need to space out these scrumptious heart attack meals. Next time I'm thinking of going for breakfast since so many of you love breakfast there. =)
Crappy location to get to . . . luckily their grub is good, which definitely makes me wanna go back to try out some of the dinner fare. The old man, on the other hand, liked his breakfast . . . but, since it's not conveniently located (not in the 95814) - I'll have to drag him here.
i had the crab cakes benendict . . . and a side of that gravy. Yes, I want it all.
The hollandaise was nice and buttery . . . I now have to decide if I like Capitol Casino's lemony hollandaise or Evan's buttery hollandaise. Sooo, I will just have to keep going back to taste test them both.
The gravy was very good, with large chunks of anise-laden crumbled sausage. I'm not a huge fan of anise, but this gravy is damn good.
What ever happened to a couple of crayons and paper for the tots? The only thing I had a problem with was the kiddie area. It's a small spot (where another booth should be) with a couple of toy boxes. . . and loud kids that we had to sit near . . . oh, after the umpteenth time the sweet little booger loudly RAMMED the toy truck into one wall, then another, and back to another . . . again, and again - his parents finally told him to quiet down. And no, they didn't get up to tell him or stop him . . . just a loud warning. So, If loud toy bashing isn't your thing, then I suggest waiting for another table to come up. . . the food is worth the wait to sit somewhere peaceful - preferably next to someone's quiet grandparents.
This is the only place that draws me into putting gravy on my pancakes. Always the fan of savory over sweet the combo of the Grandma's Pancakes with a side of his gravy, MMMmmmm! Also, Chef Evan is a really nice guy. We have also had the catering from here and the chicken skewers were ravaged by my guests in mere minutes. Very popular. I haven't had a chance to try the dinners yet but hope to.
This was our first time at Evan's Kitchen and my wife ordered a meat loaf sandwich, my son a hot pastrami and swiss, and I ordered the Chicken Pot pie with a cup of clam chowder. The place was very busy around 11:30 but we found a booth in a corner. Service was a bit slow at the restaurant was nearly filled so we exercised patience which paid off with some really fine food. We are coming back in the near future to check out the breakfast menu.
The pricing appears to be very reasonable and compares with similar items in coffee shops, but the food here is far better in both quality and quantity.
I've only been to this place once. But I fell in love. Wonderful service, bottomless COLD mimosas, and great food (breakfast).
(I LOVE the "Children use your inside voices" sign! Dumb parents.)
I wanted to try a new breakfast place. I had heard good things about Evan's Kitchen so I figured I'd give it a try. The restaurant itself is simple. Booths and big tables with old fashioned wooden chairs. The space was clean, homey & comfortable. There are some cool John Lennon prints and a few other tidbits of art around the place. The waitress was prompt and friendly. The free flowing coffee was a little weak for my taste, but I like rocket fuel, so I'm probably not a good judge...
I got a late start so I was happy that they serve breakfast until 3pm. The breakfast menu was nice. There were lots of great choices which included several types of eggs benedict... my favorite. It was great. The eggs were perfect; the hollandaise sauce was to die for. Perfectly creamy, buttery and lemony. Yummmmm. The potatoes were crispy and seasoned well. Overall it seemed that everything was homemade & fresh. They have homemade corned beef hash too... maybe I'll get that next time. Looking forward to sampling some lunch & dinner.
What can I say about this restaurant that truly fits what I feel about it.
ITS DELICIOUS!
There is no other place that saves me after one of those "I stayed out way too late, drank way too much, and now I feel like I might die" nights than Evan's- Chicken fried Steak with fries instead of potatoes covered in country gravy- it sooths my soul.
Why not stay for lunch- my favorite when not shoving my mouth full of their dream worthy meat loaf sandwich I eat the Grilled Chicken on Sourdough, so good.
I reccomend you try this place, I am sure you will not be dissappointed, the staff is like family and the food is the stuff you dream about.
:)
Hubby and I went here for breakfast recently. The atmosphere is something akin to upscale homey. The food was great. The chicken fried steak was a REAL STEAK, not some cheap, tough cut of beef. The location is great for antique hunters, but a little tricky to get to if you don't know the neighborhood. But well worth the hunt.
I recommend sitting outside. Quieter and nicer ambience on a sunny morning.
And HOLY GRAVY. I felt like the invisible hand of God led me to order the biscuits and gravy because usually I avoid that mess. This gravy is literally the best I've ever had, and don't tell my grandma that. It's amazing.
The service is average. It isn't wickedly awesome, but I can make some sacrifices here and there and as long as they keep my coffee mug filled, they get props from me.
Evan himself has come out each time I've dined there. He'll walk right up and start chatting with you and then let you know that while he's enjoyed the banter, he's gotta get back to the kitchen.
For a Saturday morning in East Sacramento, Evan's is a smart choice.
This is one of the most inconsistant restaurants in Sacramento.
This is my summary: essentially, this a a restaurant at which you might get a 4-5 star experience for a 3 star price, but every now and then you'll end up with a 1-2 star experience. That's why overall I can only give them 3 stars.
Love Evan, he's a great guy but for whatever reason his resturant just isn't consistant. Sometimes the service is good, sometimes it's awful. Sometimes the food is hot, fresh and fast, other times it's not.
He's an excellent chef, so IMO it's still worth the risk, however I certainly wouldn't go more than 1x per month, max. The odds of hitting a bad night and having a really negative experience are too high, and I don't really recommend holding a "special event" here (1st date, anniversary, etc) here for the same reason.
I came here for the second time because I had to try the breakfast. I enjoyed the first time I was here for lunch, but I thought it was definitely a strange location. I am not 90 years old looking for some new lamp to put on my antique table.
I had read about chef evan's great Chicken Fried Steak. Now, I am a big fan of Chicken Fried Steak, but I have now found the place that serves the best in the Sacramento area. The steak is actually a good cut of meat, unlike most other places that have a fatty, tough steak. The crust is light and flavorful. The gravy is some of the best gravy that I have ever tasted. I don't want to go anywhere else for breakfast other than Evan's.
We also tried the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits and gravy were delicious. Once again, the gravy is fantastic. The biscuits are actually freshly made and have a great flavor.
The only downfall (if there has to be one) is the service. The service is good, but not great. However, when you are all about getting great quality food, Evan's is the place to go.
Simple and nothing fancy in appearance. Staff was helpful and on top of things. Food was as good as we had heard. I had eggplant parmigiana which was surprisingly good with a sauce for the spaghetti that was great. I'd usually avoid anything with spaghetti, but I'd get that again. Son's Mac and Cheese was good with a small piece of bread and a couple spears of Asparagus. Wife's sandwich exceeded her expectations as well.
Only slight negative would be the snack bread they give you. It was just okay, and perhaps not the freshest. This did not reflect on the rest of what we had, it was all fresh.
We'll go back again.
I finally tried the benedict here and it was delicious! I opted for the country benny that has sausage and it came with some of the best cooked home fries I've ever had. We were immediately seated and the food came out fairly quick for an Easter Sunday.

The food is great.. except i've had over-ripened fruit and didn't really like their OJ.
The place is very country home, bed and breakfast-y.. it fits in the antique mall, i guess.
I'll definitely return for everything that I haven't tried that I want to.. maybe sit outside for a change. Nice service in a nice setting. Very Grandma.
**bottomless mimosas on Saturdays**
Ever since I have known him my husband orders his eggs Benedict with the English muffin well done. He likes the crunchiness. In probably 30 tries it has NEVER come crispy- until this Sunday morning. I think I saw a tear come to his eye. he said it was the best eggs Benedict he had ever had and the only place we are going to go out for breakfast.
Another wonderful find between J & H on 57th is Evan's Kitchen with a wonderful vibe filled with locals sharing brunch with friends + family. This place has a very homy feel to it with old fashion furniture as I will post some pictures. While dinning here it made me feel as if I was at granny's home for some good ole' country style breakfast. I love these type of places as Sacramento has it's hidden treasures of reastaurants like this one.
I came today with some friends for brunch and we came at 1pm and there was a wait and it was busy but the wait wasn't too long. As we were seated, they placed 4 iced waters in cute goblets and we also ordered a round of coffee. The coffee tasted freshly brewed and they are quick to refill you as they walk around to assure that all are refilled immediatley. I am becoming to be more observant of customer service that I notice the littest things! The hostest is nice and made sure we were promptly greeted by our server. Our main server was Summer who was very kind and sweet! I was so impressed by her customer service that I personally asked for her name to review. Honestly, there are different servers walking around making sure everyone was well taken cared off, there was another lady who walked around to refill beverages, and even a male asked if we were ok and if we needed anything else. All the workers are very kind and this place deserves an A+ for customer service.
I ordered the classic benedict over NY steak with potatoes and most meals come with a choice of fried poatoes or fruit. I enjoyed it as I'm not usually a fan of benedicts but I finished every bite and the combonation of both tasted so good together--it complemented eachother very well. I like my steak well done, and the steak was still juicy even at well done! Two of my friends ordered starvin marvin which was chicken fried steak & eggs with either friend potatoes or fruit and it also came with the choice of bread (wheat, white, english, etc). I personally wasn't a fan of this meal as it tasted too sausage-like, but my friends enjoyed it. My other friend ordered the breakfast burrito w/o cheese and she was very satisfied and commented that it was flavorful.
I always enjoy an experience where I don't feel rushed to leave and able to enjoy my food over good conversations during & after the meal in which they provided that exact environment for us. I will definitely return!
***This place can be difficult to find but it shares a parking lot with an Antique store, and remember betweet H &J.
Based on the reviews, I really expected to be wow'd by the food. It was ok, not great. I ordered the lasagna which I believe had been reheated in the microwave, my husband the chicken pot pie (same), my mother-in-law the eggplant parmesan and my father-in-law the steak. The salads came to the table on cold plates with already-placed cold forks - clearly prepped in the afternoon. I was pleased at how friendly the staff was and that children were welcome. But we paid over $100 for four people and I think I should have been a lot more pleased with what we ate. Will try it for brunch with friends, though. The Sac Bee got it right re the decor - lacking in any panache completely.
Comfortable but not amazing. I went here on recommendations from yelp and was a little disappointed. I do think it is a good family restaurant because it is really relaxed and the wait staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. The food was decent, but to me it feels like a small town hole in the wall cafe with a somewhat average, expected menu- nothing to get super excited about.
If you love Eggs Benedict like I love Eggs Benedict, then this restaurant is a must. On my never ending search for the best Benedict in the world, I ate at Evan's to try theirs. It might not be the world's best, but it is pretty darn good!
Cool antique 'family' style dining tables and you can check out Antique Row to get a little walk in after breakfast!
I got home last night from a three week hiatus from all things Sacramentan, and I'm still in bed, with my laptop, in my underpants. I don't want to get out of bed because all there is in my fridge is a stick of butter. And vermouth.
Luckily, I called my HusBand to complain that I miss him and he told me to get my a$$ out of bed and go eat biscuits and gravy at Evan's. I knew I married him for a reason.
We started going weekly to Evan's because they serve some of the best damn biscuits and gravy I've had anywhere near Sacramento. Sometimes it can be on the greasy side, but the flavor is top notch.
Everything I've had, as a matter of fact, has been good to superb at Evan's. Good mimosas, great breakfast selection, and did I mention the biscuits and gravy? We've still yet to try lunch or dinner here.
The biggest drawback, which others have referenced, is that because the place is kid friendly, with a play area in the back, some (bad) parents think that they no longer have to monitor their children's behavior, or regulate the volume of their activities. So, on occasion, the screeching kids can be a horrible addition to a hangover or pissy morning bout of grumpiness. I give total kudos to a table of men who, when I was there last, went over to their two little boys who were playing in the kids corner and said, very kindly and gently, "see that sign there? it says 'please use your inside voice.' do you know what inside voice means? it means you don't yell or shout because there are other people here who would like to enjoy their breakfasts." That is some good parenting. Those two boys quieted down immediately, and were happy and low-key the rest of the visit. Bless you, dear father or uncle or smart friend who is good with your buddy's kids, bless you...
Evans, where have you been all my life? Well, to be fair, I knew where it was, but because of their odd hours (not open on mondays and tuesdays, wtf?) my two prior attempts to eat here were thwarted by my not being in on the secret. One time I showed up to find all of the tables and chairs sitting outside with someone standing on a wet vac cleaning the carpets wearing head phones.
Situated inside of the antique ally, this is a cozy little country style restaurant that does not give much in the ambiance category but what it lacks aesthetically, it makes up for in service and food tenfold. Three words for you people: Fluffiest. Eggs. Ever. Eggs are always gross because they are hard to cook and the chef usually doesn't give a care about them, so they are almost always rubbery and gross, especially the poached ones that are immersed in icky poaching pots and end up being super slimey. Not at Evans. They seem to clearly be getting their eggs from some bionic super chicken that is being chained somewhere in the greater Sacramento area-only producing the largest eggs for Evans to then come, procure them, and cook them perfectly. I was so impressed.
Also, I was really surprised at how fresh everything was, especially due to how inexpensive it was. The vegetables were incredibly fresh and the fruit bowl, a usually slimey mix of melon rejects, stringy syrupy pineapple and mushy strawberries, was absolutely delicious. It was like the got everything from the farmers market that morning. My coffee was never empty and our waters were always filled. The best part is that this place truly is child friendly. Not like, say, zocolo that tosses your kid a wack menu with four crappy choices then treats your kid like a street curmudgeon, they really treat your child like they are actual full grown people. They have a great child's menu with lots of choices and the waitress was so friendly and helpful. The service was very speedy, despite how busy it was, which is crucial when you have children. They even have toys in the corner for restless kids to play with. Note to Parents: Just because a restaurant is child friendly, this does not give you license to allow your children to behave like they are on the island of the wild things. No, I don't want your child talking to me while I am eating, no I am not one of those parents that automatically gives a hoot about your child, in fact, they are probably the same crappy kids that chew gum and say "ass" at school. At any rate, some of the kids were running around, but it was okay, if anything it gave me something to complain about, and for that alone its okay.
Back on topic, the food, service and general attitude of this restaurant really impressed me. I even called my boyfriend who was out of town specifically to rave about it. Lame as that may be, it should be a testament to the greatness of this restaurant. I can't wait to go back and try more things on the ample menu!
Evan's Kitchen [formally the family room] has that relaxing and easy-going atmosphere that I'm very fond of. It feels like you're having breakfast at your grandma's house, except for the fact that there are about 10 tables in the dining room and a couple of waitresses fluttering about. They have some limited outdoor seating for maybe one or two people, but not much. So, if you're in the mood for patio dining I'd skip it and come back on a rainy day.
If you don't feel like dealing with a scene or waiting forty-five minutes this is the place for you. The food is tasty and consistent. I enjoy biscuits and gravy with my eggs and bacon and they always seem to deliver. I've tried most of the items on their breakfast menu and rarely have I been disappointed (skip the hash).
I've taken a peek at the dinner menu and it looks promising, but I never seem to make it back after breakfast.
Side note: it's located just in the Antique Row, so you can walk off your meal while you peruse the old china and linens.
I've been here twice now and the breakfast is delicious! When the food is this good I don't care about anything else: 5 stars.
You can't get better food in Sacramento
Evan was the chef at Limelight and Andiamo prior to opening his own place
My only complaint is the kid decor........I have a kid and I don't really like other kids
AT ALL
Service is good
Manager is Great
The cooks are awesome
Wine Merchant Steak, Turkey Fontina sandwich, and the Eggs Benny are all SO GOOD
so is the breakfast scramble with extra chees and gravy... it is the ultimate hangover cure.
Seriously Evan is the best chef and one of the best people I know
