Some of the best food I've ever had in Sacramento, and very very family friendly. Great place to go to eat on a cold/nasty night and feel like you're getting great home cooking. I would give it 5 stars if I didn't keep having frustrating experiences of going there only to learn they're closed for a private event.

I recommend sitting outside.  Quieter and nicer ambience on a sunny morning.

And HOLY GRAVY.  I felt like the invisible hand of God led me to order the biscuits and gravy because usually I avoid that mess.  This gravy is literally the best I've ever had, and don't tell my grandma that.  It's amazing.

The service is average.  It isn't wickedly awesome, but I can make some sacrifices here and there and as long as they keep my coffee mug filled, they get props from me.

Evan himself has come out each time I've dined there.  He'll walk right up and start chatting with you and then let you know that while he's enjoyed the banter, he's gotta get back to the kitchen.

For a Saturday morning in East Sacramento, Evan's is a smart choice.

I have sort of burned out on the regular breakfast spots around town, so I decided to search Yelp for a new place. Evan's Kitchen peaked my interest.

It is located in the outer East Sac area, inside the antique mall. The interior has a "country" look, which is quite fitting next to all the antique shops.  We were seated immediately into a comfortable booth.  I looked around and noticed the clientele was a mix of families, couples, and groups of friends.

The menu at Evan's Kitchen is overwhelming.  It was four pages long!  You can order breakfast sandwiches, eggs, omelets, pancakes, french toast, and they even have a whole section devoted to different styles of eggs benedict.

I opted for a "Denny's" style breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and potatoes. My eggs were cooked perfectly, the pancakes were light and fluffy, and my potatoes were crisp.

The lunch and dinner menu also had a nice selection.  They mainly serve comfort food, like meatloaf and mash potatoes.

Some folks on yelp complained about the prices, but I thought they were fine.  My meal was around $7, but it was a ton of food.  Evan's Kitchen is definitely going to be my new favorite brunch spot, I just hope it doesn't start to get the crowds like Fox n Goose.

A couple of my friends and I decided to try a new restaurant every week.  I turned to Yelp and found Evan's.  We went on Sunday morning/early afternoon.  It is located in Antique Row in East Sac.  We walked in to see a bunch of large groups and families.  We were seated right away at this massive table, which was sort of strange seeing as how there were only three of us.  We take a look at the menu and make our choices.  However, we weren't even acknowledged for a few more minutes.  Finally, a waitress comes over and tells us that it will be just a couple more minutes.  I understand that we were the smallest, and youngest, group there but I felt very overlooked.  In the meantime we notice that there are a lot of kids there.  They even have a little play area set up with toys and whatnot.  The problem is, it seems like parents like to treat this area like a babysitter.  There were kids running all over the place, like around and under our table, and no one seemed to notice or care.  I'm not the biggest fan of children, especially misbehaved ones, so I was not amused by that.
Anyway, once we finally get some service, our waitress was quite nice.  They were out of my original choice, crab cakes benedict, so I had a veggie scramble.  My friends got the country fried steak and one of the sandwiches.  My friend commented, before we got our food, that he thought this would be the kind of place where the food is so good that it makes up for the poor service.  Turns out, he was totally right.  Everyone enjoyed their selections and we left very full and satisfied.
Bottom line, I would recommend this place to a friend without reservation but only if they had patience for children and very average service.

imagine my surprise when i actually got to choose where gma and i would go to dinner.  i chose evan's.  and boy, did i make a grand choice.  i called to find out where it was and, shocker of all shockers, it's where the family room was.  (i had a small addiction to his crabcakes bennie.  seriously, they should start a program for it.  it's disgusting how good they are).

we get seated and it's not in a corner!  somehow gma's wheelchair is an automatic dunce cap that gets us sat in the corner everywhere we go.  well not at this fantastical and cozy, casual dining spot.  no no no.  i ordered the chicken.  i believe it was burgundy chicken but don't quote me.  i chose the clam chowder to go with it.  the clam chowder was fantastic.  the chicken dish was scrumptious.  a bit on the rich side for me.  three bites and that's all i could take.  but let's get to the potatoes shall we?  he beats those things like a red-headed stepchild.  they are so smooth and creamy.  also nice was that the veggie that comes with the entrees is asparagus, not broccoli.  can i get any more sick of broccoli always coming with my meal??  well, no.

since i ate hardly any of my entree there was of course room for dessert.  we shared the chocolate mousse cake.  i know, i know, "melanie, but you don't like cake."  it's chocolate mousse on a graham cracker crust and therefore totally different.  it was mighty tasty.  but even better than the cake itself was the (i assume it was homemade) whipped cream dollup that came with the cake.  i could've just had that for dessert and been happy as a pig in...i won't say it.

all in all, a very pleasant experience.  tasty food and attentive but not obnoxious service.  ridiculously reasonable price tag as well.  definitely a place i will return to.  but not for breakfast, no, i don't want to have to do any steps if i taste the benedict again.  i had to take away one star 'cause they had no horseradish to go with gma's prime rib.  someone was out at the store buying some.  sorry ev, them's the breaks.  i still love you guys mucho!

If you love Eggs Benedict like I love Eggs Benedict, then this restaurant is a must.  On my never ending search for the best Benedict in the world, I ate at Evan's to try theirs.  It might not be the world's best, but it is pretty darn good!

Cool antique 'family' style dining tables and you can check out Antique Row to get a little walk in after breakfast!

Evan's Kitchen [formally the family room] has that relaxing and easy-going atmosphere that I'm very fond of. It feels like you're having breakfast at your grandma's house, except for the fact that there are about 10 tables in the dining room and a couple of waitresses fluttering about. They have some limited outdoor seating for maybe one or two people, but not much. So, if you're in the mood for patio dining I'd skip it and come back on a rainy day.

If you don't feel like dealing with a scene or waiting forty-five minutes this is the place for you. The food is tasty and consistent. I enjoy biscuits and gravy with my eggs and bacon and they always seem to deliver. I've tried most of the items on their breakfast menu and rarely have I been disappointed (skip the hash).

I've taken a peek at the dinner menu and it looks promising, but I never seem to make it back after breakfast.

Side note: it's located just in the Antique Row, so you can walk off your meal while you peruse the old china and linens.

You can't get better food in Sacramento
Evan was the chef at Limelight and Andiamo prior to opening his own place
My only complaint is the kid decor........I have a kid and I don't really like other kids
AT ALL
Service is good
Manager is Great
The cooks are awesome
Wine Merchant Steak, Turkey Fontina sandwich, and the Eggs Benny are all SO GOOD
so is the breakfast scramble with extra chees and gravy... it is the ultimate hangover cure.
Seriously Evan is the best chef and one of the best people I know

I had breakfast at Evan's yesterday. The service was wonderful and fast, and the food was excellent. I had the Monte Cristo, which I'm sure I'll crave for many days to come. My boyfriend had the Chicken Fried Steak, which he enjoyed greatly.

The decor is like a large dining room, and somewhat cramped. Parking is plentiful. Prices are a bit high for my tastes, as I'd really rather not spend that much on breakfast.
