19 reviews for European Bistro
Holy Crap! Eastern European food here in Austin, TX?? I mean, BBQ and sausage....I get it already, but this stuff was great.
Let me preface this by saying I have many fond memories of dancing polka and eating real Winersnitzel on the East side of Cleveland as a young lass. However, I never thought that I would find that food again nor the ambience that went with it. Now, I have to stop and say that you will not have to learn polka or even hear polka at this place....but you will have an excellent Bavarian/Eastern European experience!
The beer is fab. I went for the dark Wies.....TASTY!!! I had two bottles, and they were huge. My dad had to drive us home, because I was a little drunko. The borscht was just like I remember at a Russian place I used to eat at in NYC. I had the Sauerbraten...which was the best I have had in years. My folks had the veal Weinersnitzel....I had a bite, and it was really great....no greasy at all. The spatzel and red cabbage, DELISH. The beet salad was good too.
I had strudel for dessert. The hubby had cheese crêpes. The folks had the Mozart cake. We all really enjoyed the entire experience.
The only sad thing that I will talk about (in regards to this place) was that there weren't too many people there. The staff was awesome... explaining everything to us and making sure our experience was the best we could have there. We even had a private alcove with table which was great since we were not sans baby!
Go....you will not be disappointed.....well, you won't be disappointed if you like good food!!!
European Bistro is absolutely fantastic! The Hungarian meals are perfectly cooked, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the owner will come to your table and exchange a few (potentially Hungarian) words with you, if she happens to be around.
My wife and I decided to celebrate our wedding here, and I am glad we chose to do so. The waiters were quick and they came by often enough to make sure that we had everything we needed and that we were enjoying ourselves. We even had a song played for us on the piano!
Make sure to try the Hungarian Lightly Breaded Cauliflower, French Sour Cherry Soup, Hungarian Beef Gulyás Soup, Hungarian Beef Gulyás, and the Turkey Breast Cordon Bleu! If you still have room left and they have it available that day, give Dobos cake a chance!
This Euro-Hungarian restaurant gets a Hungarian-Canadian approval!
Overrated. Expensive. Disappointing.
Everything is supposed to be made fresh. They said they ran out of the goulash. And there was no apple strudel. Made fresh, huh? The schnitzel was overcooked and dry.
And why call it a bistro if your cuisine is supposed to be Central/Eastern European?
What a let down. I grew up eating a lot of this style of cooking and this food does not even come close.
It was a slow night only three tables occupied. But we sat there for an hour before we got food. Even when I complained about the a/c being too cold, it took a while before he turned it down. The food was average (go to Walburg for German, not here) and luke warm. It's location was quaint but the other two tables were getting more service and we had a full table ourselves.
What a hidden treasure in Pflugerville!!! My husband, who is a foodie, and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary by having dinner at the European Bistro. What a wonderful dining experience!
The menu was very diverse. We had difficulty in trying to decide what to order. We decided to split a Sampler Salad. It was fantastic! The homemade Russian dressing was phenomenal, beets awesome and cuccumbers with sour cream so yummy! My husband had Jegerschnitzel (breaded veal with mushrooms) and I had the Chicken Paprikas (chicken with paprika sauce). I could see by the look on my husband's face that it was more than he ever expected. He told the waiter, who was wonderful, that it was absolutely delicious! My chicken was so good that I ate everything on my plate!!! The strudel was excellent too!
It was such a pleasure to dine in a restaurant where excellent food is served and where you can enjoy a romantic evening. We are already planning on what we will have when we go back to the European Bistro which I hope will be soon!
Well worth the trip to Pflugerville!!!!!!
Went here for my daughters 40th birthday. She was born in Germany so this was so appropriate. Her wonderful husband set this up for her and a few others. I read other reviews and yes it may be a little expensive but OH! so worth every penny. I had the Jagerschnitzel and it brought back memories of when we lived in Germany and enjoyed their food so much. Can't wait to go again. I would love to hear Polka Music but the food is terrific without the music
Went here for my birthday and it was even more wonderful than ever!
Go here! The super sweet owner, and your stomach, will appreciate you forever.

Delicious food. My fiance who lived in Hungary until 2001 loved this place as well, so you know it… Read more »
Pflugerville? Seriously? My husband wanted to take me to this little place he found while driving around the area looking for ??? I didn't ask.
It's actually astonishing that I went at all considering his last find was totally disgusting. Maybe I'll review that place next. Mua-ha-ha-ha!
This one, though, my friends, was a winner! We went in for dessert and coffee. We sat in the back by the dessert counter and I was just tickled at the setting. It wasn't decor, it was a "setting". Kind of like from a movie, it felt so real...not contrived, not overstated, just really authentic eastern european cafe (like I know what THAT looks like!) :)
Although our waiter was coked out of his mind, the owner was a real sweetheart. She explained all the desserts to us and we settled on her reccomendation of a chocolate mousse cake which really made me happy because I didn't have to use my brain! It was delicious, distinctly other-worldly and I just had to try the food after seeing gulyas and other unpronounceable dishes from Hungary to Czechoslavakia, Germany to France on the menu.
We ordered chicken kiev with german potato salad and since it was packed to go, by the time we got around to eating it I just didn't think it would have held up, but OMG!!! It was really fabulous. Stuffed tender chicken breast and the breading was flavorful and crispy even after sitting on our counter for a couple of hours. OH, and the german potato salad...wow! Really unique, and the piano player was the icing on the cake! How cool to walk into that atmosphere on a Friday night and not have to wait in line. I think this may be Pflugerville's best kept secret.
I've been to European Bistro a handful of times over the past several years for both lunch and dinner and I've always had a great experience. I've always gone with either the chicken paprika or the stuffed cabbage and they're both highly recommended. Service has always been very attentive and I've never had to wait too long for a table.
If you live in Austin and enjoy Eastern European cuisine you know how limited the options in Austin really are. There's Drakula for Romanian, and that's about it. Fortunately there's European Bistro. It's a bit of a drive for those of us who live in Austin, but it's well worth it.
My fiancee and I went there one day just because we had their coupon. No expectations, no prior knowledge.
Well, as soon as we entered the restaurant, the miracle happened! The first thing I thought of was that I wanted to have our wedding reception there! Surprisingly enough, that was exactly what my fiancee (now husband) was thinking.
The real decision maker came when we tried the food. Everything was delicious!
A year later, we had our wedding reception there, and it was great. Thank you Anni and Piroska!!!
This place epitomizes all things family-run and mama-made: you walk in, a happy mama warmly and enthusiastically greets you. Mama tells you how all the dishes are handcrafted and made lovingly with authentic Euro hands.
Everything sounds so delicious, and you're not sure what you want. Well, don't worry, mama will recommend all things you must eat.
Because of mama (whose name is Anni), we start with german potato dumplings and the sour cherry soup, followed by our entrees of chicken paprika, bratwurst, and schweinenshcnitzel. Everything we had was out of this world good. Mama wasn't lying when she said everything would be delicious.
Of course not, mama would never lie to us.
What a charming place. I felt like I was on Main Street in a small Texas tourist town.... which is not how I would normally describe Pflugerville.
We went with a group of about 10 and were the last table to leave. We were definitely the loud and abnoxious youngsters of the night (we're all in our 30s).
We tried some apps, and the best were the samosas. The potato ballz were just ok.... I know, I know, how can potatos just be ok?
I tried the Stuffed Cabbage Rolls b/c my mom used to make this dish. It doesn't compare to the dish that my mom made b/c there wasn't enough spice/taste. It was definitely hearty and a large portion. I am not the type to give a restaurant points for having large portions. I'm a small person, so I don't need that much.
The raspberry cake was also just ok. The cake was a little grainy or gritty.... I wouldn't order it again. The apple strudel was excellent. The rum crepe was ok.
I might go back to try another dish for lunch.
I think that sums it up.
My wife had never had German/Hungarian food before and I was super happy that this was her first experience. The food was delicious beyond belief and the presentation was presented in such a way that I would have been expecting more in a $$$$$ restaurant in San Francisco, New York, or Seattle.
The service was great. They told us the history of the food and picked our wine pairing for us, which was amazing.
To really show how much this place rocks, we are going there for our wedding dinner tonight, which I am writing this today as my wife gets ready to go out again.
Seriously, great quality!
This placed helped me unleash my inner Eastern European, which is my family heritage. It's like all my Hungarian and Russian dna breathed a sigh of relief when I finished my first meal here.
Thanks the the European Bistro, I now own a spaetzle maker ( you can read my review of it on Amazon!). And one of the coolest things is that every time you eat there, you get to sign this guest book and it puts you in the running for a free vacation in Budapest. The owners have a drawing every New Year's Eve for it.
Get the cucumber salad, have a bowl of goulash, get some borscht too. Stuff your face with chicken paprikash and spaetzle, and the cute little slices of fresh baked bread; Then have that freaking unbelievable strudel, and a cup of coffee. Make sure you ask them in advance to wheelbarrow you out to your car, because when you are done, you are not going to want to move.
Wonderful eastern-European-style food with French influence. I've only been here once, but everything we ordered was delicious. I even had sauteed chicken livers here (which I normally detest) and loved them. I wouldn't hesitate to try foods here that were outside of my normal realm.
Three words: sour cherry soup. It's served cold, so don't freak out. It is also, however, a bowl of ecstasy. I could eat a gallon of this stuff every day.
I grew up enjoying my Hungarian grandmother's cooking, so it is a great delight to have an Eastern European restaurant in this area. Dining in an historic downtown building in Pflugerville is a special experience: Anni is the gracious host and her sister Piroska is the executive chef who works miracles with her food. The waitstaff has always been attentive and helpful.
On my last visit on Friday, I ordered the cucumber salad (uborka salata) which was deceptively simple, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Followed by Chicken Paprikas and, of course, galuska (soft dumplings).
The sauce has such concentrated flavor which I have not been able to duplicate at home. Galuska making is an art and Piroska has perfected it. Even the garnish of a baby carrot infused with rosemary was outstanding.
I would also recommend the fried cauliflower if you have room for an appetizer. And you might want to try the Hungarian soft drink: Perrier with sour cherry, or some other fruit.
When you go, be sure and sign the guestbook: you just might get the opportunity to stay at the sister's home in Budapest!
Great German and Hungarian Food The wiener schnitzel was awesome, in fact the best I ever tasted and I have been to Germany. I love the cucumber salad, spetzil etc. Small romantic, and in a quaint area of downtown Pflugerville. They also have Hungarian, and I believe some Russia food. The deserts looked great altough I am on a diet and could not try it. Great for that romantic dinner and even a marriage proposal. I want to try the Chicken Paprika next time.

So, I've only been here once. As a rule, I've started only giving 5 stars if this is the best in Austin. This is the only German place I know of that is decent, which makes this difficult since I have no other "real" places to compare to, so I have to give it 4 stars until I have made more visits.
I had a foie gras here. It was absolutely wundervoll, or however it goes in German. This place has served some of the best food I have ever had. I went here with 5 others, who were all at least equally impressed. The building that contains the restaurant is adorable, it does look European...at least from an American point of view, the type of American who has never been to Europe. In either case, I was a spoiled rotten American being served some of the best "European" food in his life here. Unless I go back and find either consistency in the greatness displayed here or a flaw in the Knightly Armor, I must recommend the best...but not the highest...that I can logically allow...for now. 4 stars... do not take it lightly, I very much approve of this place.
ive been there twice and the food rating between 4-5 stars but the service was slow very slow both times which brings it down.the viener schnitzle is excellent and the strudel is great too, they just need to get the meals out faster.one time i waited a hour for my entree.
