Awesome show! Very funny....and I hadn't even had a sip of alcohol so you know it must be good.
I definitely recommend getting there early if you don't have reserved sitting. You want to get as close to the stage as possible because they do a lot of funny stuff outside in the window that adds to the acts. And if you can't see it...well ya miss out a little.
A guy proposed to his girlfriend when I went and he had obviously called ahead b/c the magician was totally in on it and set it up perfectly. it was so sweet! and she said yes of course :-)
This is a MUST if you live in Austin. -
Review from Katy O.
Not every joke is a hit, but.... Old Spice Obama? Hilarious!
The magician, Ray, is pretty funny too. There are other good moments in the show but some of the jokes are a bit dated/hackneyed. They do a good job with the bits in which they use audience volunteers though. Worth going to once if you're in Austin. Also, it's probably funnier with a drink in hand (which I opted out of at the time). -

This show is really funny! I laughed so hard but it may have been the alcohol in my bloodstream!
I loved that the shows stage has the street window as a backdrop. Sitting in the audience you have no idea if the people walking by are in the show or just happen to be people walking by the window. It really makes it funny. We happened to be standing on the street when the second show started and we were able to see the actors outside...it was cool to see that side of the show.
Coming from Chicago and Second City I have seen some funny shows. I was really impressed to see what they are doing here in Austin. I can hardly wait to see another show here again some day!!! -

This show was great! This is a must see if in the Austin area.
Got a great deal on their Twitter page for 1/2 off general admission.
Great use of props and they also try to include the audience which ends up being hilarious. Def check this place out! -

So if you're NOT living in Austin and want to visit our fair city this is a MUST SEE while you are here. I've visited several towns across this great nation and have seen many styles of comedy shows here and there but nothing compares to the comedy and magic at Ester's. YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE SOME BIG BALLS to carry off the different levels of political satire and humor that are layered throughout the show and Ester's has CAJONES (testicles in Spanish) to spare! This troupe also goes to great pains to make sure everyone is insulted and made fun of but never at anyones expense. The writers including Michael Shelton ( great piano dude) keep the show fresh and current and you can count on laughing at not only national events but local ones as well. Shannon as the late Patsy Cline, Shawn as the sexy stunt double ( they never see you coming), Kerry Awn and his new map of Texas, Cynthia Wood always has a firm grasp on "the package" of magician Ray Anderson, will Ted Meredith ever make it back to regional theater in Lubbock? Then there's Ray Anderson. Ray, I laugh so hard at your magic comedy that I pee myself a little!
GO see the show and find our for yourself what all the fuss is about! -
Review from Megan E.
Do you like to laugh? alot? and enjoy magic and singing? then you have to, have to, have to come see this show. Absolutely incredible. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard, and was in so much awe all at the same time. They have such original songs, and such incredible magic that I was left extremely satisfied.
All you really need to know is that its money well spent. You wont regret it, and you'll absolutely laugh a whole lot. -
Review from Errol M.
Okay, I'm not saying I'm the worst person ever to travel with or to watch a live comedy revue on 6th St., but I may be pretty close. I just start getting a little antsy when I feel I've been sitting long enough to get somewhere or hear a punch line. The good news is Esther's Follies can be slicker than a two-headed double-lubricated condom, and that can make the journey a little less annoying.
You need to know that I'm more fascinated with the staging and choreography of a live ensemble working a small stage, rather than their sense of topical humor (Yes, Virginia, I get the jokes), and these guys have it down to a science. They've been doing it so long now it's an obvious tribute to their professionalism, but I'm pretty sure they're still doing a boatload of rehearsal for their five shows Thursday through Saturday. All the musical numbers, magic routines, and comedy segments come zipping at you at a rapid-fire pace, there's some incredibly involved props in some of the bits, but there's never any sense of downtime during an entire show - that's good staging.
I've been going to an Esther's show every now and then for a long time, and while I've never felt any performer has "mailed it in," I do feel sometimes that some cast members sense a certain predictability about what they're doing, but they make it work for us. I could be wrong. My favorite bits have always been the unexpected moments featuring audience participation: You have to love it when you know a performer wants to crack up with the rest of us - that's good stuff.
Some quick observations: If you have to come up with something to entertain the out-of-towners, it doesn't get much more happy-happy than this. The first show starts promptly at 8:00, and you don't want to be that party of dorks that needs to be seated after curtain. I think it's worth the extra five bucks a head for reserved seats, since you're essentially paying for an unobstructed view of the stage. And unless you're a serious boozer, blow off the in-house bar and consider doing all your drinking before or after the show - oh c'mon now, you're walking out of Esther's smack dab into the heart of 6th Street, where all our good times in Austin began.Listed in: "Oh Austin, How I Feels…

Review from Nathan I.
Austin, TX
What do a magician, a shirtless Barack Obama impersonator, and a practically nude Rick Perry have in common? If you answered "Nathan's Weekly Poker Night", you would be absolutely correct. However, I would also accept "What to expect during a show at Esther's Follies."
I received a call, seemingly out of the blue from a guy named John. Obviously, we were friends, as he had my number, invited me to hang out, and mentioned how much he's been enjoying reading my reviews. On my side, however, I had absolutely not one clue which "John" this was. You can insert the requisite Nathan-As-A-Prostitute joke here, if you'd like. Seriously though, was this Brian's roommate John? An old hookup John? A guy-I-met-at-Charlie's-in-a-blackout-and-said-I'd- go-out- with-him-John? I figured to hell with it--I'll meet him at Rusty's and be surprised.
It ended up being my friend John C., who I hadn't seen or heard from in a long time, but at least I could breathe a sigh of relief. He had said we could make it to the Thursday 8:00 show at Esther's if we played our cards right.
As soon as we walked in, we spoke with the woman up front and she said there were a couple extra seats for us to slip into, as the show had just begun. John C. knows the musical director (and he's a Facebook friend of mine), and apparently a few of the staff were already familiar with who I was as well (which I just *adore*).
I kept thinking, even as I got situated, how in God's name I'd never been here before. As an Austinite and man about town, I'll admit I was ashamed and embarrassed that I'd never made it to see this amazing, completely hilarious show. Thankfully, those days are over.
The show is fast paced and high energy for the entire run. It's a smart, sassy, and sharp amalgamation of current political humor, celebrity barbs, plenty of suggestive and not-so-suggestive innuendo, and just plain silliness. Austinites especially can relate to the humor derived from traffic on I-35, or cruising singles at the flagship Whole Foods. Skits may change frequently to keep up with pop culture, but all of them are entertaining.
Anchoring the show is the extremely talented Ray Anderson, whose magic tricks were mesmerizing for such an intimate stage. He'll saw a woman in half, impale himself on a spike, and shoot a puppy through a window. You'll of course be asking "How the hell did he do that?" more than once. Plus, he's freaking hilarious, both in his facial expressions and his repartee with the audience.
If you're passing by on 6th Street and look into the stage, you have just become a player in one of my favorite parts of the show: Ray's quips about the public, especially the sartorially challenged or the awkward among them. Example: three nerdy looking guys = "Oh, look, it's the entire UT math club". Snappy observations like that amuse me to no end.
There is one intermission, and fear not smokers: Esther's outdoor "grotto" is available to allow you that cigarette break.
If you sit in the front, expect to be a magician's assistant, and if you're a guy, you may have to take your shirt off. Just saying.
I can also imagine it'd be a great place for a first date, especially with its proximity to 6th Street or any other dinner/drink spot in downtown Austin. It'll break the ice and give you something to talk about, that's for sure.
Esther's is the perfect venue to take your out-of-town friends and family, as it sums up the laid back, "Keep Austin Weird" vibe in one fabulous package of showmanship.
I haven't laughed that hard at a performance in a long time. I'm kind of a bitch like that. Amusing me to that end may have been Ray and Esther's greatest magic trick of all...
5 Stars! -

I cannot remember laughing as much as I did during this show. SO funny! Imagine 57 other math teachers laughing along with me. Must be ultra funny, right? It IS. I'll definitely go again the next time I'm in downtown Austin.

Hilarious. I don't know if it was just the night I was here, but this was fall out of my chair funny. No joke! I was busting up laughing the entire show. I had such a good time and so did my friends! I should go again this weekend!!
They joked about politics, had magic shows, all sorts of crazy stuff was going on. So much fun. I'd definitely check it out if you can.
Believe it or not, they do have food, but I'd stick with just the show if I were you. Grab dinner before hand and then go laugh your butt off.
Have fun! -

Five of us went to see this ages 20 to 50 and everyone had a great time. Show is funnier than all heck. We laughed the entire show. I would recommend reserved seats and ask to be in the center section. They have a full bar so you can have a drink if you desire.

Doubled over in laughter! This was my first experience with Esther and her Follies, and it was a great time!
This show is not for kids or those that are easily offended. It is not PC in any fashion, and will boldly touch all topics including race, religion, politics, sexuality, etc. While the show is not too terribly raunchy, such does increase in the 2nd act.
Most all of the cast were riots, but Ray (the magician) stole the show. He has a way with the audience, a charisma on stage, and is hilarious in improvisation with passersby.
If going, get there early to get good seats. Also, it was a nice surprise that free admission to the Velveeta Room was permitted after the show with your program.
I can't wait to go back and take friends and family! -
Review from James M.
Esther's Follies is a classic Austin show and is pretty much required for anyone who is visiting or has recently moved here. It's tons of fun, full of laughs, and if you sit in the first few rows, there's a pretty good chance you'll end up being part of the show.
It's basically a musical comedy skit show about current news, politics, and culture. Sort of SNL meets Glee. Oh, and there are magic tricks too. Really good ones, actually. So I guess it's more SNL meets Glee meets Siegfried and Roy. Also, the back of the stage is a big glass window that opens up to 6th Street, so passers by on the sidewalk often end up playing an unwitting role in the show. So I guess it's SNL meets Glee meets Siegfried and Roy meets Candid Camera. Yeah, that's it.
They have a full bar here, but the prices are pretty steep and the drinks are pretty small. Also, the only food they have is popcorn (although it's pretty good). So you might want to grab dinner and drinks beforehand.
Their shows sell out quickly, so I recommend that you buy your tickets online ahead of time. And show up about 45 minutes early to get good seats. If you show up any later than that, then enjoy your view from the balcony. -

Worth the $20 (student rate). It was SO hilarious! Very classic with a contemporary twist of: news headlines, parody, singing, making fun of Austin locals, and ultimate successful acting. Variety of magic, theater, music, and wonder! My first time was a success and would love to go back again to break the ice with a date or something!

I'm relatively new to Yelp, and the two reviews I've written thus far have been regarding tattoos and food, respectively. Since I found those establishments because of Yelp, I felt obligated to review. Esther's is the first I'm reviewing of my own volition, and I am GODDAMN happy to do so.
I'm from Michigan and rest assured, there is nothing back up north that compares to the level of entertainment Esther's gives. There's a full 90 minutes of non-stop fun with cheap drinks, a post meet-n-greet, and an all encompassing welcoming atmosphere.
My fiance is flying down on the 9th of August. Point of order #1: Pre-Order Reservations at Esther's. Game On, Austin. -
Review from David N.
So all the years I walked down 6th and looked into this window I always wondered what they were actually watching.
It took me a few years after I graduated to wonder enough to actually pay the $20 for general admission student tickets to watch it for myself.
And WOW, was I glad I did. It's not for everyone but I must say it was a great variety show. Do you like SNL? Well here's the live version.
It is a great mix of magic, music, comedy, and just a plain old mix of a good time.Listed in: Austin: Night Life

When friends & family come to visit you always feel a lot of pressure to impres:; I usually stress about it for an entire week prior to the impending visit, develop night terrors and break out in what can only be described as acne vulgaris. All because I don't want people to think that I live in a sh*tty town. Unfortunately, one of my good friends' first visit here (just two weeks ago) ended in food poisoning disaster!
Then my Mom surprised me with a visit. That's right. She alerted me to her arrival 12 hours prior to her landing. No time to plan. No time to sweat.
So far, we've had a blast.
Second night of her visit, we ended up at the Thursday night show at Esther's Follies. Based on recommendations from some of my coworkers, I was a little concerned. My mom is pretty conservative, doesn't drink, and doesn't like the bar scene.
She had a blast and was laughing so hard that she had to wipe tears away.
Thanks folks at Esther's. So far this visit hasn't caused any massive breakouts. -

First time here this past weekend and it was great! The show was hilarious and even though we had the worst seats in the house (last row in the far corner), we could still see everything just fine. The place seemed clean but Austin-y and the cast was really good.
I am taking one star off because I think their reservation system is confusing. I saw on the website that there is reserved seating for a higher price but once we got there, the show was sold out unless you had a reservation. Apparently you can reserve regular seats? I didn't feel this was clear from their website and we almost missed the show because of it. They got us in, though, and it was a great experience. Will definitely go again.
The price is a tiny bit steep at $22/ticket compared to other comedy shows in the area but you are not forced to buy any food or drinks so that is the total price and they put a LOT of work into the show with costumes and props so it is well worth it. -

Can not remember ever laughing so hard or so long in my life, my husband agrees!! It was FANTASTIC, would recommend to anyone and everyone, can't wait until we go again!!!
-Tip:
If you go on Friday or Saturday night at the 8:00 show, they will let you in the Veventee (sp?) Lounge next door for free afterwards. The Lounge has a stand up comedy show, which is either a hit or miss, and the drinks are a little steep in prices. But for sixth street, and a free show, it evens out :) -

Hilarious and entertaining.
This was my second visit in 5 years. I was disappointed that there was more magic than political satire-especially given all the fodder the economy and politicians have supplied. The magic act, while good, was basically the same act with different props. Esther's I hope you take my hint...more political satire, less magic!!!
We reserved general admission and arrived right at 7pm for the 8pm Sat show. We sat on the main floor and I soon wished we would have sat in the balcony as my husband suggested. A man well over 6 feet sat a couple of rows ahead of us and made it difficult to see the interactions going on outside the window. In addition, just as the show was to begin they squeezed another chair (and us) in the row. So much for getting there early :(
All that aside, we went as a group and had a lot of fun. I would recommend that everyone come once. -

I cannot say enough great things about Esther's Follies! The show is just amazing. I don't even know where to begin! It was SNL meets Glee meets a magic show!
Much of my trip to Austin was planned by my friend that lives there. Thankfully, he'd heard of this show because I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it if I'd walked by or read about it in a guide book. However, it was a total highlight of my trip. I come from Chicago, where there is no shortage of improv or stage performances. But I've never seen anything that made me laugh quiet this much. They have an amazingly diverse cast spilling over with creativity and talent.
When I return to Austin, there is no doubt that I will be making a repeat visit to Esther's Follies.Listed in: My love affair with Austin, TX

FUN! Something to do whether you're a Texan or out-of-state visitor. It's a combination of a musical, magic show, Saturday Night Live-like skits and variety stage show. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for something different to do while on 6th. Some skits are just so much funnier because of the window into the street. There's audience participation for those who like to play along or watch others suffer.
Worth the cost of admission. There's also a bar for drinks and outside, near the entrance, there's a small food stand where they have great sweet potato fries. -
Review from Daniel J.
Esther's Follies is quite the staple in downtown Austin. This is a variety show like none other -- mostly because it is extremely Austin-centric. Don't let that preclude you from inviting your out-of-town friends, because the comedy and magic are sure to entertain anyone!
In my two times attending Esther's Follies I noticed some similarities in the shows, but they do tweak their shows to add different sketches, new magic tricks, and jokes that are relevant to current culture.
Audience participation is a huge part of the show, and if you are sitting in the two font rows and look or are dressed in a way that makes you stand out, you will most likely find yourself as part of the show. This is hilarious as you never know what personality is going to end up on stage. It's also funny to people watch and sometimes watch as the performers heckle homeless people who interrupt the show from outside (there back of the stage is home to a wall-sized window that is right on 6th street).
I recommend making reservations early so that you can get prime seating down front. This is a great place to venture for a special event or even just a fun night out on the town! -
Review from Ryan J.
We needed something different to start out our team's night on 6th street and Esther's Follies delivered last night.
The performers were great and really seemed to enjoy what they do. I loved the magic acts, the up to date humor and songs and the mocking of the people outside who come up to the glass. It's a fast paced show and will keep you entertained the whole time.
Go early, sit up front on the aisle and you may be lucky enough to be part of the show! -
Review from Anna Z.
My roommate invited me one night to an Esther Follie's show with her parents -- I'm so glad I accepted!!
Her parents had reserved tickets, so when we got there we had enough time to grab a drink, have a couple of chats, and then we were shown our seats, which honestly couldn't have been much better (without possibly getting picked on haha). I looked around and I don't recall seeing a seat that would have been awful; I feel that the audience seating was laid out pretty well.
There was every topic imaginable covered, and it even included using the outside of the building/the sidewalk on 6th street!! There were times when I had a hard time understanding, so if you are not absolutely fluent in English, I would not recommend this show for you -- otherwise, go for it!! You will walk out still laughing about something!
Parking is a free for all as usual downtown. Depending on when you go, you may be lucky to find curbside parking (keep an eye out for the signs), or you can always find a random lot or a parking garage that will charge you $7-$10 for the night.
I hope you have as much fun as I did!! :) ..or maybe even more! -

Came here for "fun night" while in Austin or the 2011 RE/MAX of Texas convention. These people put on such a great show!! I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself laughing (because I fully expected not to!!).
We only had a choice of wine or beer since the entire place was reserved for RE/MAX, and the wine was not the greatest. Nonetheless, had a blast and would love to stop by again if ever in Austin! -

I went to Esther's for the first time for a fundraising event for C.A.R.Y. .... and all i could think is how Disappointed i was that in the year and a half that i have lived here in Austin i had never made it to Esther's before.
The show was great!!! extremely funny!!! My favorite part was the Dr Sues satire. Simply Hilarious.....
I plan on recommending Esther's to everyone i meet that has not been. -
Review from Holly A.
I can't think of too many public things better than going out for dinner and then ending up here. Not only did I get to 1/2 Tango with Ray Anderson on stage, but he cut me in 1/2 in the show and I didn't even know it. NOW THAT'S A MAGICIAN!!!
(I thought they just crammed the person up in the box, cut, had a box with dummy feet and then separated the 2 boxes so that voila, looks like you're cut in half. Well, he had me wiggle my toes, I wasn't crammed anywhere and 1/2 of me was on one part of the stage and 1/2 was on the other, but I had no idea until my friend told me when I got back to my seat. The way I laid in the box completely flat and stretched out was the way I stayed - btw I am 5' 9" so I couldn't of done the Gumby squish thing anyway. Impressive.)
So I obviously sat in the front row to be fortunate enough to be a part of the show itself. What fun! But I can assure you even if that never happened I would still be giving Esther's Follies 5 plus stars. I haven't laughed that hard since seeing Margaret Cho live people!
The whole show is cleverly orchestrated and beautifully delivered. No candy ass cheese up in here. There is something for everyone and that is obvious in the diverse audience. If you are easily offended, stay at the nursery and don't bother coming here. Pretty much anything goes, and it does! Probably the best lobby area to wait for a show that I know of, too. I totally love the set up of the windows in the back of the stage - the windows with a view to the street outside. And passing by are unsuspecting downtownies becoming part of the show. Some were embarrassed, but most were ready to get it on.
I just have one favor to ask, Ray, would you pretty please have Ellana do something with me next time I am there??? WOW. -

We did our holiday Christmas party here for Boot Camp U and we had an awesome time! The show was funny, witty and they did a great job of engaging the audience. In fact, we had three people from our group either pulled up on stage or made a part of the show in some way.

I had gone to Esther's a few years back and remembered liking it. But after the show...I LOVE IT!
Since my cousin was in town, I decided to take her here and Oh am I glad I did!
We laughed for the whole hour and a half! It's a great place to take an out of town guest, or just go with friends! Its funny, its witty, and there is something for everyone!
The cast really gives their 110% and are full of energy! They are all excellent performers!

I'm sorry I've been ignoring you lately, Yelp. School has taken me hostage.
My sorority hosted Casual here last weekend and I will admit that was skeptical at first. I wasn't sure what to expect but figured from all the good reviews that I would chuckle at least a bit.
Needless to say, I had a great time! Very funny, some parts were a bit slow, but my absolute FAVORITE performer was the magician. He was just so funny and his "magic tricks" really blew me away. Also, it's funny when the cast include people passing by the window as part of their jokes. I really like the set up for this place too because regardless of where you sit, you'll still get a pretty good view. I hate going to places that allow general admission but have crap seats and if you're unlucky, you're stuck there.
Definitely check this out, you'll definitely LOL. :) -

My Mother took our whole family to Esther's Follies, saying "it was a uniquely Austin experience". Boy, was she right! The show was very fast-paced, bouncing from one song to another to another. The characters were over-the-top and hilarious,
They must change the acts frequently because many of the numbers were about very topical events and news occurrences. The resident magician was spectacular and had a great sense of humor.
After spending several days with family for the Thanksgiving holiday, it was a great treat to get out of the house and laugh uproariously for a few hours. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for something out of the ordinary.

I took my husband to Ester's for his birthday and we both loved it. On the plus side...the show is VERY funny. We laughed a lot and had a wonderful time.
On the negative side, seats are crammed in theater. The drinks are not very good and the lead female in the show (I think she is the owner) is not as good as the others in the performance.
I would highly recommend trying this place while in Austin.Listed in: Best First Date EVER-Austin TX
