Review from Ron C.
I went here for a Birthday Massage. as it is not every day you turn 51 [ sigh ]
Spoke with the owner & tried to book with her, but she was quite booked! , plus she was very humble & modest & said the yelp love was nice but un warranted re: her.
So she booked me with Anna, who unlike a majority of massage therapists in the tri-county area did not go to Irene s School of Massage, she honed & perfected her craft in Utah, she truly had abundant energy/strength/pressure & some techniques that were very beneficial & new to me in 25 years of Professional Massages
ANNA A+
The Spa was truly very cozy /comfy and top notch furniture, tables & lighting
Plenty of atmosphere & presentation
A+
Plenty of parking in front & out back but bring Quarters for the meters
Also worthy of your notice is the $10 off yelp coupon!

PS: if your here on a Saturday , I have seen the Joe Mamas Taco truck in the same block
+ Treat Dreams Ice Cream & cake pops are right nearby -

I love this place!!!!
This is seriously the only place where I will go for a massage any more. Everyone here is so professonal and they always make me feel like they're glad that I'm there. BONUS: They don't talk while giving you your massage!! That's my favorite part...I've been to places where they talk and talk and talk and tell me all of their problems with the boyfriend, family, dog, etc...I end up walking out feeling even more tense!! Not here, it's quiet, professional, and affordable. Woo! -

Was really feeling bad...shoulders were killing me...creeping down the back and up the neck.
Sally did a wonderful job. The next day was back to normal.
They were able to take me in on pretty short notice..only negative didn't see they were offering a bonus to new people and it was not offered/mentioned.
I will go back...and Sally will be my first choice.
She was nice, perfect amount of pressure...she checked in to be sure it was..and not too much chatter...just enough. -

I've been going to essential massage therapy since they opened on 9 mile. It begun when I bought a massage certificate at a charity auction.
I'm had massages all over the US, I get them every chance I can, especially on vacation with my wife. I love massages and the one I get at essential are the best.
I see Lisa, she is the owner and when I started going there she was the only therapist. Now, years later she has a booming business and even though she is somewhat famous, she always makes time to see an old client.
People like that can make your day. I'm very happy to give them a 5 star review. -

Cannot say enough about the massages here. To be clear - It's not a day spa, so there is not a relaxation room or fru-fru tea to sip on with comfy slippers. But don't let that deter you, it's straight up massage awesomeness. The rooms are very comfortable and private. Everyone on staff is professional and good at what they do. This place saved me during my pregnancy as they offer a great, affordable pre-natal massage. If you are looking for a great massage without any stress (pretentious day spa atmosphere, up selling of special products, etc), Essential is the place.

I love tote bags. I have a bazillion. LeSportsac, J. Crew, Target. Dig.
I also like to be prepared. For anything. From nuclear warfare to the trots.
Hence, totes get heaaaaavvvy. And my shoulders get sore and like any (non)self-respecting woman, I neglect my muscles and the need to indulge. Massages evade me, even though they really ought be a weekly occurrence. But, in these tough economic times. . .
. . . I went to Essential Massage Therapy. Yelp took me there on a recent vizzy to the D and consummate with being on "vacation" it triggered the desire to be pampered. Now, EMT is not your typical "spa". It might as well be a doctor, insurance or legal office. It's non-descript. No shimmering rock fountains, no monk chanting, no lady magazine overflow.
It's really bare bones. But that means you can leave your c-notes at home, because a one-hour escape was $60. And it was a joyous thing. Ellen knew how to do me right. She consulted with me on my needs and then used her expertise to get the job done. Which is precisely what I expect out of any "artist". You know what you're doing, I trust you, but thanks for listening to my woes so you can chart my course to ecstasy without fumbling around.
I was drooling, mouth-breathing and eyes-sealed-shut. It was divine, and the place was packed, a constant churning of clientèle seeking an hour of escape from it all. If I still lived in Michigan this would most assuredly be my go-to place. I don't need floof and fuss. Just warm, capable hands. And put some back into it.Listed in: Beautified

I want to give this 4 stars but I'm so happy I feel I must give it a 5 so... I mean, look; for 2 futhermucking days I woke up with a back that killed and before that it was off and on for a couple months. Why?
Because every 6 months or so my back starts to hurt. I guess since I live a pretty stress free life I somehow manage to store the stress in my back (since I think that many things in my life would be Fricken Terribly Stressful to many people in today's society . However, I read too much Taoist philosophy to get wrapped up in life's penchant to throw retardedness my way.) which means that every time I go to a massage therapist they remark how I muct work in a coal mine or rock quarry since my back is full of knots. Add to that how I go to sleep and my fat little jerk bulldog, Mr Poop likes to take over the bed and I wake up with him in the MIDDLE of the bed while I am pushed off to the side all cocked and twisted. (Don't sympathise with him - he's spoiled and he knows it and will totally take advantage of your sympathy - trust me!)
My therapist was so fricken cool. I asked her if she wanted to get married. I was in heaven regardless of the fact that, as she said, she was only working on one lair or "cracking the shell" that is my back. I slept like a baby last night. I will go back - I am so picky about massages too.
I was gonna take some pics - I think I will skate down there tomorrow and get a few for the review page. I mean - even though some places offer lots of bells and whistles for alot more - it's the PRICE that Owns here too. I payed 49 quid for my first time and it only bumps to $60 when I go back. It was worth it.
The staff is friendly and I was able to get in the DAY OF which is good too, of course I do have fantastic parking karma so who knows...Listed in: The Detroit Experience

I received a 60 minute deep tissue massage gift certificate for Christmas, and then the silly thoughts started to swirl in my head: is this place legitimate or will I end up on Channel 7 news for a vice raid, what happens if the masseuse suggest a happy ending (hahaha just joking), am I comfortable with someone touching me that I don't know, especially if they have huge calloused hands...
When I finally got over the awkward stage associated with getting a massage, I set up my appointment with Luke.
Luke is great. He is consummate professional. He provides an excellent massage from head to toes. He ask if you are comfortable and ensures you are relaxed.
The decor is nice in light and dark earth tones and very well appointed. Super clean and lots of great smelling candles.. And real bonus: lots hand sanitizer in use.
I will be back!!Listed in: Place to Visit in the D and…

I have been going to Essential Massage for several years.. and Lisa and her team are MARVELOUS!! Always professionals, clean and relaxing environment and one of the best massages I have ever had. I have gone exclusively to see Cory Perry, the whole time.. GREAT massage, a wonderful sense of touch and someone that really WORKS at giving a great massage. I even have a friend on the west side of the state that comes all the way from Grand Haven to have a massage there.
I would highly recommend Essential Massage Therapy to ANYONE!!
Addendum.... Since Cory is no longer there, I had the opportunity to give Logan a shot... Very good massage, very nice person and still a fabulous business! -

Job got you down? Kids wearing you out? Want to treat your mind, body, and spirit to a little something special? Then cruise down Woodward to Ferndale's Essential Massage Therapy. This appealing den of relaxation is a wonderful place to unwind and work out the stress that has got those muscles bound like Bowline knots.
Essential Massage Therapy offers several kinds of massages including Swedish, Hot Stone, Thai, and Prenatal. Each variety of relaxing and soothing massages have varying prices, but plan to spend around 60 bucks for an hour.
I've been to Essential Massage Therapy several times now in the last year or so to see Lindsey and every time I do, I want to stay longer and longer and longer. She is always attentive to my needs, asking if there are particular parts of my body or any health issues she can attempt to remedy, and she normally does. Every time I leave, my mind is calm and comforted and my body more relaxed.
Essential Massage Therapy does offer gift certificates which are fantastic gifts for co-workers, a birthday surprise for a friend, or mother to be. I have treated several of my nearest and dearest to a massage here and they are not only still thanking me, but praising Essential Massage Therapy for the fabulousness. -

I have been going to Essential nearly since they opened the doors of their current location. I love them for so many reasons.
First of all, Lisa and all of the therapist are so friendly and professional. I have never had anything but a PERFECT massage here. This was such a treat during pregnancy - and especially after having kids. They literally work the stress right out and I leave feeling 10 years younger!
But the thing I am most grateful for is Lisa's help during my time of infertility. She is really passionate about this application of massage and gave me the winning massage that finally enabled me to conceive my beautiful son. That alone is worth its weight in gold. And to think I got it for $60!Listed in: Wellness

first went here when i was pregnant. the massage therapist did such a wonderful job, i went back towards the end of my pregnancy. a different therapist also did a great job. i've since returned a number of times. i like ann, but my husband saw another female therapist he thought was good too.
they also have male masseuses. a great value and not pretentious at all like some of those day spas (i've been to) in birmingham, but nicer and better than fundamentals in ferndale. -

I have to say I was very impressed with my Therapist. I have one in Illinois and am always skeptical that they will not be as good as her. Lisa was wonderful, full of knowledge and a very healing touch. She listened to my needs and what I did not like and followed through like a pro. The prices here are outstanding! I have been to spas that charge much more without the attention to detail and knowledge. Thank you Lisa!

I absolutely love this place. I've been a few times, I've bought gift certificates for others, and each time the experience has been very pleasurable. I've been to other places for massages; and because this is their focus it shows in their work. I always hate the last 10 min of my massage; because I never want them to stop. Excellent pricing, service, staff, and ambiance.
