Review from Patrick M.
Boone, NC
A little hard to find? Maybe.
Hard to find your way back? Not in a million years.
Do yourself a favor and take a seat at Espresso News. If you've ever been to a coffee shop that roasts their own beans, you know the trade-off that you're walking into: clothes that smell like coffee for the rest of the day, in exchange for some of the freshest brew you'll ever get.
Coffee not really your thing? How about a bowl of hot soup?
How about a bowl of fresh, local, hearty soup on a snowy Boone day? No? Are you sure you're human? Oh, you haven't been to Boone in January yet. You still seriously need to taste this soup, no matter how hot it is. They have a different flavor each day, and I've hardly seen the same one twice in the months that I've been eating it. Yes, that's a very good thing, but MAN, I want some of those bowls to come back for round two!
Oh, did I mention there's a bar upstairs?
If it's anything like what EN already has going on, it'll be a chill place to share a (different type of) brew for locals & tourists alike. But don't expect your typical college scene at this bar. None of that beer -flavored water you'd see at a frat party, they serve a small selection of good craft beer and wine. And with a name like "Low" and the fact that they only play LPs for their house soundtrack, come here if you want a relaxing drink with a few friends. I also hear they have some more desserts and a mean cheese plate upstairs.
Do yourself a favor and make it to Espresso News & Low wine bar, ASAP. -

Fresh roasted coffee...used to have a lot of books upstairs...not so much anymore. GREAT coffee. Sometimes has biscuits and baked goods.
The quintessential coffee house in a college town. Highly recommended. -

Excellent coffee! Some of the best I've ever had. Cute, cozy little environment with free wi-fi and all. The typical crowd looks like they just walked out of Anthropologie magazine, and can be a little "hipsterish", but overall I give a two thumbs up.

On a quick little afternoon get away from the family at the lake, my s.i.l. and I ended up at Espresso News. We were surprised that there wasn't a coffee shop on the main little drag there, but maybe we just missed it.
So, Espresso News reminds me of Asheville coffee shops, and other crunchy college type places. They serve good coffee and they have tables and a high counter to crash at,and upstairs, is something called a "book store" but it is unlike any I've ever seen. Unusual books for sale at retail prices ( although half off according to a sign on the stairs) but only one copy per title. Things that make you go hmmm. No matter, it does what it's supposed to for a coffee shop.
It is a little hard to find, but it is behind the Footslogger place which is hard to miss. -

Boone, NC is an interesting place. A mountain-village college town, it's a sleepy, idyllic area with picturesque scenery and iconic mountain people. After winding our way through the Blue Ridge Parkway, the boyfriend and I stopped off in Boone (named for the American explorer Daniel Boone) to recharge and visit with an old friend. The friend suggested we go to the coolest (of about six) coffeehouses in the area. We came to Espresso News on Howard Street.
This place is delightful and adorable, bordering on being twee with a slightly pretentious we're-trying-so-hard-to-be-Indie feel. From its chipped paint on the walls to the mismatched table and chairs, open air ambiance, Espresso News clearly set itself up to be different. Instead of a usual sign advertising its opening hours they've altered a Google image of a little Asian kid. Homemade magnets featuring people who may or may not have a connection to the coffee shop are for sale on the counter as well as an Indie music CD.
Upstairs is the ever-elusive "bookshop" where books aren't for sale. Instead, guests can fight for one of the six table and chairs and sip their coffee or smoothie while thumbing through worn copies of classics and books that no one really wants to read. Although this upstairs area is called Mosaic Books, it is more of an open plan room divided into artsy cubicles for mooching the establishment's wi-fi: not a soul in the "bookshop" didn't have a laptop whirring away on a table.
For what it is, it's acceptable. For what it tries to be, it can use some work. There's no rhyme or reason to the ordering system. The staff don't go out of their way to be friendly and you get the feeling that the place doesn't really know its market. It's a mix of college kids, professors and backpacker and hikers. Of course, people from those three categories could very well come together in a coffee shop with no problem, but at Espresso News, it seemed like a weird combination for some reason. I'm not entirely sure who "belongs" there, although I did get the impression that it would be a haven for vegans (this was purely an impression). Another odd feeling I had when sipping my really delicious strawberry, blueberry, pineapple smoothie was that at some point in its life this establishment, not necessarily Espresso News, but the establishment itself had seen a lot of marijuana ... or maybe it was just because I was in the mountains. -

This is the hip coffee shop in Boone. Student/professor hangout behind Footsloggers and King St. in downtown, right next to the university. Good coffee, macs, good magazine selection, but not comfortable seating. Atmosphere is what you'd expect of a Boone coffee shop: Musty, dark, but with BIG windows that let the sun in, friendly/hipster staff that's not afraid to work. Usually steadily busy all day. Solid, strong coffees. My second favorite coffee shop in Boone.

I think a section labelled "Boating Disasters" makes Espresso News the best small café slash bookstore in Boone. Coffee is tasty, wireless is fast, and the music comes from a record player instead of an iPod.

I love this coffee shop. It's bright and sunny and edgy at the same time. And they make an Americano that'll punch you in the mouth with its macho beans and that's exactly what I need in the morning. The pastries are pretty tasty too. Plus, the magazine selection is fantastic. It's refreshing to not have to look at that US Weekly/InStyle/People stuff.
