Excepting Little Star (a different thing altogether), this is my favorite pizza in the city, no matter which location.  I don't care how many times I've tried Nizario's, Marcello's, Serrano's, or Blowjo's - this is my favorite.

The ingredients are fresh and the potato-garlic-pesto is so good, I can't not get half the pizza to have it when I order.

Tip for ordering in person by the slice: scan the pizzas that are there for the taking.  Order the one that glistens the most.  It is the freshest and greasiest and will taste the best.

My roommate told me that this place had some bomb pizza.  I wanted to like it. I really did.  But I should have known better; for the last week the man has eaten nothing but King Cobra and a block of brie his gf bought him.

It would be really convenient to have a great pizza place so close to the bars, BART, city college. etc.  I was hesitant that the sight of the place - but hey, I'll give it a chance.  It was a little too reminiscent of the Blondie's-style pizza in Berkeley that's made in the morning and only good at ungodly hours.  And I'm sure EFNY could save a drunk tummy at such a time.  But noon on a Thursday, it was underwhelming.

I can't say I'll never return, but I swear my sober belly will not be ingesting it again.  wink wink.  obvious lame joke.

At the risk of sounding not fashionably jaded & anti-establishment enough to live in the Mission, Escape From New York makes perfectly functional pizza.

I know, I know - it's not all hip & trendy & indy & shit, but whatevs.  There are a metric fuck ton of other pizza places I'd go first if I wanted Really Good Pizza, but sometimes you're starving, you want food in your belly, you want to be able to walk there, and you don't want to have to think too hard about it.  On those nights, I'll definitely bop on over to EFNY.  As chains go, they are in my opinion one of the least offensive options out there.

A bit overpriced (like $4 a slice) & slices are cash only (there's an ATM in the store), but that's about the worst I can say about it.  EFNY is pretty much the definition of 3 stars.

OK. The pizza here is bad. The crust is bad. The sauce is bad. This place sucks.

Sure, it's good when you are drunk. But... you know, when you're blitzed enough, any old vodka tastes good. Safeway special? Sure, no problem. Until the next day, praying next to your toilet, you realize what a clueless asswipe you are when drunk. So please, to the "it's the perfect drunkfood" crowd... rehydrate yourselves and consider what you are saying.

To the freakazoids who are dissin' Serrano's pizza -  which, for those of you not in the hood, is only one block away  - you totally confuse me. Really. Perhaps you have never cooked yourself before, and don't really know what cooking good food entails. I suppose in comparing local pizza-by-the-slice establishments, the palates are not particularly refined?

Serrano's has fresh ingredients, they bake each slice from scratch, the sauce is great, the crust is great. My cred: I grew up in a college town near Chicago, where pizza is a religion, and I was a very dedicated disciple. Serrano's is not intentionally hip. *Hip people may go there,* but it's just a pizza place that is doing everything right. Jesus, I've had *way* more pretentious pizza in this town - Pauline's, anyone? - but Serrano's? No. In fact, they were so unhip, they went through a phase of handing out little cards that pushed a real estate biz one of the owners had on the side. Yeah, if you closed a deal with him, you got like $300 worth of pizza or something. It was hilarious. Did I give a shit? No. Their pizza is classic and perfect.

I was happy with Serrano's being the only pizza place in this neck of the woods. I considered myself fortunate. If EFNY forces them out of business, we as a city will have reached a level of lameness I previously thought unattainable.

I suggest you program Serrano's # into whatever crazy-assed thing you are using as a phone, and when you get the urge for quick pizza, take a deep breath, dial, and wait the extra 10 minutes. It's worth it.

Perfect pizza for holding down the liquor sloshing around your belly after a night of drinking.  Right next door to the Revolution Cafe.  You can sit outside at a table, although you might get accosted by a homeless person.

They are open very late and I love them for this.

Friend and I took a break from having our ear drums gangbanged by live music at the Make-Out Room and stumbled drunkenly into this pizza joint.

My friend's an SF resident, while I'm a native but live in Oakland--oh boy, just watch as the hijinks unfurl!

No, not really.  The hijinks tend to spring forth from this little nugget--I drink like a fish and she doesn't, so I weave back and forth with a lamp shade on my head and she shakes hers in bemused disdain.

Hey, it's our friendship and it works--you know what you can do with your judgment!

Anyway, pizza here was pretty decent--I especially like the medium-thick but extra-crispy crust.  Their sauce wasn't anything special, however.  Kind of that bright red semi-sweet that's a little too close to commercial.  Good selection of the usual toppings and condiments (parm, pepper, garlic salt, etc).

Brought me down from my bourbon high, so that was good.

You know what you're getting - a solid, large slice of kinda-almost-New York-Style for a bit more money than it should be, conveniently, and fast.  Not enough places sell that in San Francisco, so I do go back.

Their Potato and Garlic slice is by far their best.

They deliver efficiently, and are open relatively late.

I'd have to be really really drunk to like this crap. Even then it would be a stretch. It's overly doughy and sticks to your teeth (left me wondering if it was insanely undercooked) and the sauce barely exists. The only "by the slice" pizza that is worth putting in your tummy in this town is Victor's on Polk.

this place doesn't except CC's on single slices, which sounds like they accept for whole pizzas.  Well it was my fault, but the 3$ atm fee at the scammy wells fargo for 2 x 3$ slices just made me grumpy.

Also the wheel chair ramp takes up like 50% of the interior of the store which made the already small space feel more cramped , and made me sort of irrationally resent wheelchair people.

There were a swarm of big black juicy flies flying around inside.
And inside the parmesan jar there was a fly buzzing around.  Makes me imagine that it grew right out of the freaking cheese (like sprinkle some cheese + larvae onto your slices, i imagine the refills come from the same maggot ridden container)

It was hard to eat the good tasteing slice and not be paranoid about some big kamikaze fly (made fat on the abundant dog shit in the mission) making a beeline(ha ha,a fly making a beeline)  right for my mouth.

Sounds like i didn't have a very good experience right?  Then why did i give this place 3 stars?   "A-OK"
well, cause it is only a block away from where i live. Wwhich makes me never have to make the mistake of going to that awful Serrano's again.  That place is just terrible.  I'd rather have a fly go directly from a juicy dog (or human) turd into my mouth than ever have to degrade my palate with one of those piece of crap Serrano's triangle carboard things again.

I don't get why these smelly hipsters Serrano's so much, it sucks, so much. Jesus Christ. it might be the worst pizza in the city.  Which leads me to believe it must have something to do with the hipster culture.  Not the taste of the pizza.  They must have got together at one of their weekly meetings around their drum circles and decided it would be ironic to keep this Serrano's pizza in business.  Like that time they came up with the bright idea of protesting and blocking the opening of the American Apparel.  That sure was cool and ironic you assholes, American Apparel is all you wear, lets run it out of town, cause empty store fronts are so much hipper.

Anyway, Arinelle's is still my favorite, but if i had to get a pizza within a block of home, i will go to escape from new york.  i just won't use the parmesan.

I have had their pizza twice in the past week and it's pretty good! First I had the pepperoni a few days ago and that was a-ok. Today I went ahead and tried the potato pizza and it was gooooooood! Even after I picked off all the garlic, I can't talk to anyone for the rest of the day cause of my stinky breath! But it was so gooood and so worth it!

Yummy, fast, and cheap (I paid cash!)!

"Escape from New York Pizza is the best pizza in the city..." Don't say that. That's like saying Pizza Hut is God's gift to the hungry. Escape is amazing...when you're drunk. Otherwise it's just your typical pizza place that serve you by the slice.

Stoked that Escaped from New York Pizza now has a location in the Mission! Just had a slice of the gourmet with art hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach and red sauce. It was fresh, pipping hot and cooked to perfection. The crust was thin, crisp and just a tad sweet. Quality.

They're open until 2AM on the weekends, making it one of the few late night eateries around this part of town that's not a taqueria. You now have a choice Missionites!

Welcome to the neighborhood Escape from New York Pizza! Glad you're here!

The good:  They are open late and their pizza tastes great when drunk(ish)

The rest:
-- They charge too much.  If they really served up a fantastic slice like you get in NYC .. I would gladly pay the premium.   However, let's speak truth here -- somebody is 'saving' money on the cheese.  It is definitely *NOT* NYC quality.
-- What's up with the $3.00 charge @ the ATM?  Little star graciously charges .25 ... given that this is a cash for the slice business ... I smell nickel/dime profiteering
-- Your Crust -- the lack of effort and shortcuts show.  Geez!  It's pizza!  Not cracker bread, not cardboard, not some amateur effort at 'home made' pizza.   Your crust is on par with Trader Joe's 'take & bake'

The role of 'my favorite pizza place' (which also delivers) is still open.

You guys are like a pizza-bootay-call ... If I had a better option I would take it.

Glad to see a pizza place open at 1am in the Mission. There is nothing better than buzzed late night junk food. After Lisa W. scared me away from eating bacon wrapped hot dogs from the street vendors, I was glad to find Escape from New York Pizza still filled with people and warm pizza for me! It was definitely an escape from the douche-cake crowd and the whack douchey DJ at Medjool. That potato pizza was delish.

Mmmmmmm....just 3 stars. Why? I know I could grab better pizza some place else and its probably only good while buzzed. hahah

Recommednations:
Slice of "YOU SAY POTATO"
Slice of "THE GOURMET"

My pizza slice MO is plain cheese. Easiest to soak the oil off and remove excess cheese. But the artichoke heart, spinach and sun-dried tomato slice at the new Escape From New York looked so good I had to go for it. Yeah, it took more effort to get the oil and cheese off, but this generously sized slice was so good, it was definitely worth it.

a friend and i were walking back to her apartment and she wanted to grab a bite to eat and i was hungry as well, so we stopped in for a quick slice.

i'd never been to an EFNY before and was scarred it'd be like sbarro from mall food courts, but it's definitely a notch above. not quite sure that's saying a lot, but the potato garlic pizza gives it a sizable boost.

the pizzas do look a bit tired as john a. said but they reheat pretty well. just wish they'd heat them up a bit more since it was hecka cold in the city today and by the time i got to my car (3-4 blocks or so) the slice was cold :(

decent prices, i suppose, but if they cut them by 20% i'd be a really happy man.

I went here on 'opening night', and my slice tasted like drywall.  Not to worry- I'm sure all the residual construction debris has burned off by now.  Three stars cause it's probably the the only decent late-night slice in the 94110. Still- why the hell are you eating pizza in San Francisco?  We're not in Brooklyn.

I was really excited to have a by-the-slice pizza place in the neighborhood and I do like the potato garlic pizza at other locations but each time Ive been here the pizza was super SALTY. Super salty like I-might-barf-on-my-way-home-unless-I-get-a-glass-o f-water-really-soon salty. Not only that, but the pizzas look like they've been sitting out for a few hours, drinking 40s on the curb until it was time to be sold to desperately hungry people craving anything but another burrito. Also, I do think they're a bit pricey and they skimp on the cheese. Heck, for $8 for two slices I could get Indian food.

Finally, a great pizza place that delivers in the Mission!

Delicious pizza - great toppings, perfect slightly crisp crust, always served hot.  My personal favorite is the vegetarian "Gourmet" with sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, feta cheese and spinach. But even the basic pepperoni is a treat.

New bright & clean store, convenient location, open til 2:30 am on weekends, decent prices and great and friendly staff.  Great by the slice & offers amazingly fast delivery throughout the Mission & neighboring areas.  5 stars!

I am so happy EFNY is my neighbor! I love the one in Russian Hill, where I used to work, so this is the same, right?

I have only been there once since they opened and my first trip went alright.

My sister and I went in looking to buy a slice but i figured the better deal was to just buy a whole pizza. I ordered my pizza. The guy said it would be 15....15! minutes!, which was perfect because it would give me enough time to take a slow walk to the Chase ATM a few blocks down since they don't take cards. And I would be back in perfect time for my pizza. When I came back, my pizza was done....or so I thought. They had burnt the pizza. The guy at the front was very apologetic. And we only waited for another 10 minutes for our new pizza. He apologized again, let us keep the "burnt" pizza (we figured we could pick off the top and the crust) and gave us 4 free slice vouchers (probably a $15 value!). This was much nicer than what Celia's did to us. They once delivered us a half burnt pizza like it was nothing. I didn't want to waste my energy or wait another 45 minutes for them at the time.

As far as the pizza, it was yummy, just like how I remembered.

Stoked that EFNY is now in the Mission and can finally end Serrano's monopoly on sliced 'za in the red side of the Mission. Last time i went there, the staff knew how to heat the slice just right, so it was extra crispy but not burnt.
