This place is great, pizza is great, toppings are great, people are great.
I used to come here all the time for work, and still get delivery or a slice when Im drunk.
Why 3 stars? Because of one particular bitch working behind the counter. Now I'll admit it was Halloween, so its busy as hell right?
We call to place an order togo, it ends up being 45 min, so we call back 15 minutes later to request it be delivered, ok. They call back and tell us to pick it up in 20 minutes. I wait 30, go there. Wait in line , again not a problem because its busy I understand, I work in retail. I ask the lady about the order, she tells me oh it'll be 5 minutes in in the oven. I see what appears to be my pizza go into the oven. Now... I give her the benefit of the doubt, and then 5 minutes later ask her because Im in a rush, can I have whats just coming out of the oven on the slices to go. Told her I can mix whatever just give me a full pizza to go. She gives me a shitload of attitude and tells me its in the oven so wait. Then some other guy goes and asks another person to do the same thing, and it works. So I request it again 15 minutes later and the guy says 5 more minutes, and later decides to give me another pizza in the oven.
Seriously bottom line, I would've given this place a 5, but because you're not willing to work with your cusotmers a bit, you get a 3.
I'm sorry to 95 % of the staff, but the girl who had the slit neck costume working on halloween was a bitch.
there is a blonde beauty working there and I love to ogle her behind the counter....she's got colorful streaks in her hair.....
as for the pizza...it's ok....good in a pinch....
def better than nick's gourmet pizza that used to
occupy the space....c'mon....pizza on foccacia bread?
bleagh...no wonder nick's failed.....
Oh FXXX!
FXXXin' Hell.
There was a Moron works there blowin' his nose with both hands even though he was usein' a napkin, but his fingers went into his nose and diggin' shit out.
Oh Yeah, he was diggin' his way to China.
And turned around and said, "Need some help?"
He didn't even care washin' his hands!
He might think that he didn't need to wash his hands because he used napkin.
And he used a spatula to pick a slice pizza up.
But he got a paper plate with the left hand!
HOLYSHIT!
Dude, get serious.
It's a food industry.
Wash your FXXXin' hands after blow your FXXXin' nose!
JESUS!
What kind of management the place has?
I don't want my Sausage Pizza made by his BOOGERS!!!
WhatTheFXXX?
You have no idea what's goin' on inside of restaurants.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the pizza.
But after the incident?
I don't know I can do that again.
Can you?
I just want the manager must know there is a guy not doing the right thing in the place.
Hey, people are watching.
Btw,
phillip w. "it adds protein!"
Vanessa W. "yuck!!!!!!!!!!!"
Marian G. "Ugh! I can't eat pizza anymore!"
Ken K. "Boogeroni pizza!"
Lolia S. "Boogeroni - gross!"
Steve L. "EEWWWW! I'll pass on the extra "ingredient". I think my craving for pizza has now been passed."
Katelynn L. " Eww...that's disgusting!!! "
Clyde R. "that's nasty, Nobu, what's up with these people....?"
Don B. " Oh Gawd! "
tinna h. " oh, that is really gross. i never liked that place! :( "

Similar to my feelings on wings at Kezar's I think that this is the best pizza option outside of NY. They're consistently good and not too overpriced.
Got a large New York Chicken Pesto for a quick bite here the other night, and it turned out great. Ordered it pickup, and it was ready in a tad under 20 minutes. Toppings tasted nice and fresh, pesto was good, not overly greasy. It was quite expensive though, nearly $30 for a large pizza?? It did come with 10 or 12 decent sized sliced, and fed 4 of us with a few pieces leftover though. Not New York caliber, but definitely has decent slices. I have also hit this place late night for some attempt at reducing the potential hangover, and it definitely fits the mold for that cause as well.
Yum yum . Ooey, gooey toopings plus crispy crust . YUM YUM !
I don't know what happened to this place, as far as I can tell they must of restaffed, the guy answering the phone is about 10 times nicer than the jackass that used to work there, but their pizza's are so inconsistent now.
I used to order a pizza from them about twice a month, overjoyed that I found a decent New York style pizza in SF. Then out of the blue, about 3 months ago I got seriously the WORST pizza I could of imagined. Seriously, I don't know how you mess up dough, cheese, and sauce, but I guess they started by forgetting to put sauce and cheese on it. The pie wasn't even cooked, we had to throw out half of it.
After that experience I stopped ordering there for several months, just recently I took the dive again, first pizza was amazing, this last one last night... ugh. It looked like they didnt' have enough dough to make the pie, so they stretched it as thin as they could, and folded it over itself a few times, and tried to patch it together with little globules of cheese. The pizza came in like 30 minutes, but somehow it tasted like it was overcooked, yet was already cold when it got to me. I'm guessing they must of unloaded one of their pies meant for slices on me.
Complete crap though, really dissapointing. When you spend 20 bucks on a pizza, from a place that ONLY makes pizza's, you REALLY can't mess it up that badly. Order from this place at your own risk. You may get a really decent pizza, or you may get some inedible cardboard.
I'm done with these guys now.
Too bad the pizza here is so good because I might have to come back. The stoned-out-of-their-minds idiots that work here nearly ruined this place for me.
When a customer calls in an order for a pizza and a salad then comes all the way to their restaurant and gets told "Uhh yeah dude we're outta salad."
"I'm sorry what are you talking about, we just put in an order for a salad."
"Uhh yeah I dunno we like don't have any lettuce or something."
Then 3 stoned, dirty, and obnoxious guys walk back in from smoking and the guy goes "why are you taking orders for salads?"
...
"I dunno dude we're like out of salad."
PULL IT TOGETHER. Who taught you work ethic?
I don't claim to know anything about New York style pizza. But I do claim to know what tastes good. And this pizza tastes good.
If we need an easy dinner for a group before a big night out, we order a large Potato Pesto pizza. It is always made fresh and has huge delicious garlic cloves sprinkled on top.
After a big night, we'll often stop in for a quick slice. Sometimes the line is long, and I usually wish there were more seating, but for the price and the taste (and the time of night), I just don't mind.
We are regulars! Good, easy, freshly baked pizza and nice staff.
Fair warning. I lived in New York for 4 years. I happened to love New York style pizza and quite frankly anybody who doesn't like New York style pizza is a (as Allen from The Hangover might say) re-tard. Either that or they like Chicago style pizza which I guess is good especially if I'm trying to gain say...... a 1000 pounds.
Anyways. Its pizza. Its good when your drunk and stumbling home from the bars. I wouldn't order this for dinner or any other occasion because its not worth eating when your sober.
Pretty yummy, especially after a night of going out, then its phenomenal and hits the spot. Although the line may be a bit long, have no fear, it moves really fast.
I really enjoyed the Andy Warhol. A supper yummy large slice with lots and lots of toppings. No skimping here. This pizza is good, not the best but if you are near and craving pizza, then this is the place.
I eat slices.
I've never been to NYC so I'm off the hook in that regard, but thank goodness for this place on Polk St.
This is a classy ensemble of pizza peddlers at this one. Beware the shitbags that pose as customers though. They think they're royalty... really.
The crew is almost as delicious as the pizza.
I don't eat 'slices' in San Francisco
I eat Delfina
I eat Little Star
I don't eat slices.
Nothing pizza related Escaped from New York - all the good pizza is still there. It has not escaped. end of story...
This place is really a mixed bag for me. Their pizza usually has a nice crust but a lot of their combinations or toppings are un-flavorful. Their pepperoni pizza or mushroom pizza slices are usually great. But the pesto potato pizza was a big fail for me, which is a shame because I love pesto and potatoes but it really seemed to lack any flavor. The cesar salad is pretty terrible and overpriced for basically old lettuce leaves and 2 shavings of parmesan with a store-bought dressing.
Most of the people who work here seem to be really unhappy about working here and look constantly bored. I used to work at a pizza place and I get it but I never made my customers suffer and feel weird due to my crappy job.
I was pissed drunk & wanted late night grease so I won't be useless the next morning. Nothing tops drunken pizza... how can a slice of cheap pizza go wrong?
It went wrong.
What's not to like about this spot? Great thin crust pizza... the best of the standard fare pizzeria kind, IMHO.
It's got that nice crunch on the underside and just enough chew on the lip. Toppings taste fresh and the cheese is not too oily.
It's a very great "everyday" kind of pizza. But certainly not a destination.

For years I've been pining for a slice of a particular pie. A pie like they used to make at a place. A place called Pizza My Heart out on Clement and 11th. If anyone... ANYONE ALIVE ANYMORE remembers that place and has been there, I'd like to spend a few moments crying with you. I know there's a Pizza My Heart in Santa Cruz and I know there's even one in San Mateo. I went into the Santa Cruz one once and I just couldn't do it -- I couldn't stand to find out that it would never be the same. I always got the same thing. A slice or two of cheese pizza with pesto on it. They put LOADS of pesto on. Scrumptious.
Anyway tonight I decided to order a pie. After my strange experience at Cybelle's last week I didn't feel like ordering from there, and it was raining too much to go to Victor's. And for some reason based on their huge volume of to go business I was not interested in having Victor's deliver. And Orgasmica was not even answering the phone. So. I Yelped around a little and finally decided to call Escape from New York. Their phone service was excellent and they were very sweet to come all the way to my door. The pizza looked fantastic and had lots of topping on it and the crust was really good - not too bready - but I have to say the flavor was just ok. I had both marinara and pesto on it. Maybe it will be better tomorrow?
This will absolutely do! It is the best neighborhood pizza joint I have had since my tenure at UCLA- Westwood has 2+ pizza joints, 1 of which is open past last call.
I had pepperoni and cheese- the cheese was better and unfortunately I burned the roof of my mouth on it.
I will very likely be back and be satisfied. 4 would require ranch dressing which i heart with pizza!
I must say, this location has vastly improved my feeling for this chain.
We stumbled in before hitting Cinch, and I grabbed a big ole' slice of pepperoni. I love how so few places can mess pepperoni up. But they either added a rhino-fart dusting of MSG or this was AWESOME! (I'm hoping for the latter)
So, though I have only had a bad experience by another location, I hereby vow to give the entire chain a new shot at the Cadelove.
P.S. This place is great for grabbing that slice pre-smash or post-smash.
P.S.S. I think there is one in the Castro, but my loyalties lie with Marcello's. Sorry EFNYP, but the gays don't love ya as much as we love Marcello's. You only get the straight drunk ho business in that hood.
Gimme gimme more, gimme more, gimmmmmm mooorrreeeeeee!!!!!
Ok Brit Brit, I love this pizza pie! For dinner or late night, Im humming happy tunes while I stand in line salivating for the perfect slice of this magical pizza. Whats so magical? Oh the size itself is, and its quite magical you can get it all for $3!!! I gravitate towards the Hawain or the Pesto, usually a slice of both. Thanks to the lovely Lil Thur I was introduced to this place a year ago. Once an Orgasmica addict, this place takes the lead in my vote for order by the slice pizza.
It looses half a star cause its not in my hood, another half cause when you order the actual pie itself its a little below the quality of individual slices.
I only go here for late-night eats. (When Za is closed.)
I always feel ill after eating it.
The mushroom is good, but the pepperoni is baaaad.
And the cheese coagulates.
Sometimes they run out late at night - that sucks.
We come here from work at least once a week for a slice. Always the same crew working the counters, and always fresh pies coming out of the oven. One slice will do, and you'll still be productive when you get back to work. It's pretty much a staple.
If you love affordable, unhealthy but OH SO TASTY pizza in the city. Go!
I feel the need. The need for speed. And sometimes, fast delivery after day drinking will do just the trick.
After a few hours of watching the air show and the Blue Angels, my friends and I craved sustenance. Tossing back lots of champagne and Pacificos is grueling work, and don't you forget it. So while we girls held down our jobs of looking good and getting crunk on the roof, the boys took it on to get us some pizza.
Guy #1: Hey everybody, situation is under control. Escape from NY will be here in thirty.
Guy #2: Awesome! What kind did you get?
Guy #1: Pepperoni and sausage. In this apartment, we don't eat vegetables. It's delicious.
Guy #2: Dude. Get the pesto potato pizza. I'm not even kidding. I fucking hate vegetarians and I love that pizza. It's bomb.
Since the boys wanted to avoid an argument (or maybe because unlike girls, there's no need to get catty over pizza) we opted to get both the potato pesto and the pepperoni sausage.
And hot damn, those boys can be my wingmen any time because they did quite alright by this girl. The pepperoni sausage was good, and the pesto potato was phenomenal. The only downside were the giant cloves of garlic on top, scaring any potentials away for the evening. But that's fine, because I wound up in an Oregon football bar with a bunch of 40 year old men, not exactly what you would call a target rich environment.
So for all you gentlemen out there, and because I can't help but squeeze another stolen line in: Take me to Escape from NY or lose me forever!
Alright so picture this:
It's post bar-time on a Saturday night. Me and two of my besties have stumbled out of Shanghai Kelly's in dire need of some drunk munchies. What do we want? PIZZA! Duh. (This always seems to be the consensus after hours of drinking, and a couple jager bombs thrown in there).
So following the lead of one of my friends we stand in this godforsaken line at a little hole in the wall. Does this bother us? No way- we need pizza. As we stand in line we begin seeing people walking out with some of the best looking pizza ever.
Finally it's our turn. OMG what are ordering? There are pizzas and pizzas and pizzas encased in the glass counter and trying to choose one is a feat! I settle for a trusty pepperoni. I pay and meet my other two friends a step or so away at a counter with some stools (I'm pretty sure there were no tables).
I take my first bite, look at my friend and we're both like "where are we??? this pizza is phenomenal!!" Our navigator friend says we're at Escape From New York. Boy did that resonate because i did NOT forget it.
In all fairness, even if I were not in an inebriated state I know I would still love this place. Thank you, Escape From New York, for ending our night in pizza heaven.
The pizza tastes fresh, the price is right in an otherwise expensive neighborhood, and they consistently stay open late, so give 'em three stars out of the gate.
The pizza itself, however, keeps it from getting another star. They put out the same four or five types of pie every night. They skimp on the toppings as much as any pizza parlor I've ever seen. I mean, seriously, I ordered a "meat special" slice and you could count the morsels ot beef or sausage on one hand. And these were not "chucks" - they were "morsels." The Hawaiian had maybe four or five little pieces of pineapple and three small circles of ham. It's tasty, but it's pathetically under-topped. Only the "Potesto," with potato slices and garlic, had enough ingredients sufficient to cover the crust and/or sauce.
If you have the time, and it's earlier, you're much better off going up to the sister location - Za Pizza on Hyde Street, whose owners also have a stake in this place.
Friday after a long night of going out, we stopped by our go to late night pizza place, Escape, for a slice. Outside we got into a philosophical debate with some strangers (nice guys), regarding the best pizza in SF. We concluded since we live within a 1 mile radius of Escape, service is as fast as our post bar hopping greasy food craving bodies require (wait time is about 3 minutes from order to eat), and the pizza is darn good, its the best in the city. Service is fast, pizza is hot and fresh, and its pretty cheap. About $4 a slice including tax and tip (good karma jar). Service is very polite and all transactions are done with a smile. They have salads and fountain drinks too, if you are thisty.
When most eateries on Polk are closed, Escape from New York is open. They've got decent pizza and prices. Other than that, nothing really redeeming, but nothing really wrong with it either.
Last time I was there a fight broke out inside the teeny tiny parlor. What a bunch of monkeys! The workers were super quick to help break it up and boot them out. Glad to see them take care of business so quickly!
I've been in San Fran for 4 days and have eaten lunch here twice. The slices are big and full of flavor. I had the Hawaiian on day one and the Mushroom on day two only because they didn't have the Hawaiian sitting out on day two. Disappointing but the Mushroom didn't let me down. The slices aren't oversauced and seriously make me consider going back there for dinner and even breakfast if they were open that early.
The people that work there are really nice and if you're lucky enough for one of the two tables outside to be free as well as it be a nice enough day to sit outside, then you can actually have a somewhat pleasant pizza lunch.
A great spot to have a slice after enjoying the bars on Polk. I'm pretty familiar with their location on Haight St. as the bars in upper Haight are my preferred stomping grounds. But Escape from NY is just as good here! My personal favorite is a vegetarian pizza that has artichoke hearts and feta cheese, mainly because of the two aforementioned toppings.
To pickup a slice after drinking is a great inexpensive snack that satisfies and tastes great. They also have a self serve water dispenser, in case you need to re-hydrate quickly.
If you eat here outside late on a Saturday night, be prepared to inhale some smoke from the smokers outside the neighboring club. On the bright side, you'll get to enjoy the eye candy of skanky looking girls. Que Bueno!
This pizza is so good and so close to NY pizza that I almost thought I was back in NYC. As I sat there, eating my plain slice drowned with garlic powder, I stared out the window imagining that I was in fact back in New York.
If it weren't for all the fucking hippies walking by and the fucking prius driving by or all the people wearing shorts with Northface Sweaters, I could have pretended for a little while longer.
Stupid prius.
Stupid hippies.
Stupid people wearing shorts with NorthFace sweaters.
GREAT pizza!! We ordered the Hawaiian and the U Say Potato -- and they were both delicious.
The location is pretty safe ... or safer then the other location I've been to on Haight.
The Hawaiian was great, the only suggestion I'd make is to probably add a bit more pineapple so that I actually got some in every bite, but none-the-less it was still fantastic. The U Say Potato was very delicious as well. The pesto did overpower all other tastes on the pizza, but the potato and garlic was very yummy and crunchy!! It was an interesting slice.
They do accept Visa and Mastercard. Also, the slices range from about $3-$4.
I will come back here again ... I think about it all the time. =P
Pizza is just average but will suffice if you ever have a pizza attack.
There is very limited seating so it is basically a call and pick up to take home kind of place.
Okay, I just wrote a less than favorable review on one of the more popular Chicago style pizza places in SF, supposedly the best Chicago style pizza in SF. That was such a disappointment that I decided to do what any true pizza lover would do...real New York style pizza!
I have never had a whole pizza here (yet!), but get slices at this location often. In my opinion, this is the closest thing to genuine, real, authentic NY style pizza I've ever had outside of NYC. I still remember it vividly since I was in NY twice last year. I hit Carnegie Deli again too (oh my gawd, pastrami on rye, best in the world, orgasm of the mouth!), but that's a story for another day.
Escape from NY Pizza on Polk St is virtually identical to the many (and I do mean many, all different owners too) Ray's Pizza places that I've frequented while in Manhattan. Yes, it's greasy...dripping off the pizza and you have to fold it in half to enjoy it, but d#mn that's authentic!
The slices are pretty big too. Some people have told me that they like Extreme Pizza. I'll never know if they're any good since I went only once years ago when Extreme first opened. They had a sign out front that said Extreme BIG slices! I had a slice and it was the most pathetic little triangle I had ever seen. I was like what...'Extreme'ly small? They burned me once and I never went back. Anyway, back to Escape:
There are many other pizza places that I love in SF (Pasquales on Irving, Gaspare's, Bella, Giorgio's, Tommaso's, etc), each of them special in their own way, but when I want real NY pizza, there is only one place I go and this is it, Escape from NY. Bonus points for staying open late and being on the site of the old Pizza My Heart. Those were some good times back in the Johnny Love days.
We order deliveries from here from time to time, which are always quick and friendly.
Most importantly, their "You Say Potato" pizza (roasted & sliced potatoes and roasted garlic cloves over pesto) is truly a thing of delicious beauty.
**the i've-only-eaten-here-drunk-when-everything-tastes- good review**
4 stars for yummy cheesy goodness and a convenient 2 step proximity from the rouge.
find me here on friday nights at 2am inhaling 2 slices of hawaiian pizza. yum.
skip the pesto one with wierd potatoes on it.
I love this place. I moved here from Chicago the home of the best Pizza in the world and have finally found a pizza that is perfect.
Thin crust, huge slices, great toppings, fast delivery, and not too much cheese. I love it.
Lord, i have been looking for a good pizza place! Last place that was here i got food poisoning from. So it's nice to see a new place. I got the
Potatoes & Roasted Garlic Cloves with pesto. I was a cynnic too but it was delicious! Granted it was late night after drinking and my first drop of food since 11am...but i would go back in a heartbeat. Thank god my friend lives nearby!
