Have always been a huge fan of great pizza by the slice restaurants. EFNY is the best I've run into in SF. The place smells great, has awesome pictures (some autographed) of musicians on the walls, and most importantly boasts a ridiculously good pepperoni slice for less than 3 bucks. Slices are huge so 2 slices will be enough for anyone without an unusually insatiable appetite.

Every time I pass by I want to walk in!

Another great pizza place, specifically for large new york style crust.
Pizza quality can be hit or miss.
Pizza by the splice is a bit over-priced.

I make fairly regular trips to SF to shop at Amoeba Music, and EFNYP always has a stack of 'free soda' coupons on the counter there.  A damn successful marketing ploy, because I usually stop there after music shopping.  Really great slice of pizza...worth stopping in when you want a quick nosh.

A good spot to grab a late night slice. The slices are huge and there's a few to choose from, so most everyone finds at least one thing they like. Great people watching, too- especially if you're here at night. Then again, this is Haight, so it'll never be boring. One star off for the barely-warmed-up slice, but no big deal.

What the hell? Another SF pizza joint that consistently fails to properly warm up my slice of pizza. This place is totally underwhelming. Where is the good cheap pizza in San Francisco??? I tell you, it is not here. I should have known better since it is a chain. Their sauce and toppings are just boring and bland, but I guess that is what you West coasters like!

Crust so dry and hard you can't bend it, which breaks a cardinal rule of NY pizza, literally.

    No hot sauce available.

2 stars for cool wall of autographs from famous people who have eaten their pizza apparently.

As far as post-apocalyptic pizza places go, this place is pretty rad.  Though the decor looks like it's been pieced together from abandoned/metallic roof fixtures, the pizza always comes warm, doughy, and filling.  I'm sure Kurt Russell would agree that their pesto slice is where it's at.

U Say Potato... I Say Foookkk Yuusss!!!

I have been to NYC, I have seen the place. I sat with the people, and I munched their pizza... I can say this about the experience.... "meh".

As a Chicagoan, owning up to people in other places that their food trumps what my town might be known for, is difficult. The great 'Chicago Style' vs. 'New York Style' hot dog debate of '07 nearly ended in a bar brawl, but instead at a hot dog joint. This leads me to the DEEPDISH vs. NYC Thin crust. Which is better, is one not even a pizza?!?!

Anyway, this joint does it better then NYC. Yeah, thats right... fuck you NYC. HA!
The purists there would never think of something as genius as pesto, potato, and gobs of roasted garlic on a pizza. No, those shmoes still only get as creative as 'sausage' on their pizza. PFFTTT!!!

Here is to you Escape from New York! For creating a really awesomely awesome pizza.

    P.s. Your crust is great.

On the Saturday night of Halloween weekend, my guy and I stopped in for pizza because we were starving after dancing for hours at the Deadmau5 concert.

Please give these guys props for being open late when all of us drunken assholes need to eat something to soak up the alcohol.

Please give them a good tip for being patient when a parade of slurry-speaking, dressed-in-costumes, no-I-can't-find-my-cash-why-don't-you-accept-credi t-cards customers line up outside the door and spill on to the sidewalk.

    Really.  They deserve it.

After drinking my face off at Hobsons my friends and I came here. I didn't realize it was an actual store. I'm so with it, it's amazing.

I got a slice of the U Say Potato (I say F you) and then I said I wanted hot sauce and that they don't do. WTH. Seriously? No hot sauce??? What kind of drunk people's pizza place is this? Whatevs, its still kind of the best drunk and sober pizza I've had in the city outside of pretentious pizza.

I HAVE NO LEARNING CURVE!  I do not learn from my mistakes!  Whenever I make a pact with myself and promise that I will never return, I inevitably forget and give it a second chance!  This is most likely the reason I still grab hot baking sheets with my bare hands!  Evolutionarily, I SHOULD HAVE PERISHED in the last ice age!

Now that I have disclosed that little tidbit, I freely admit that I came here yesterday.  I was desperate.  Hungry, lonely, headachy, and craving cheese.  Never a good sign.  I should have bought a tub of fresh mozzarella and eaten it with a fork.  But instead, I thought "oh, tomatoes, and cheese, that is what I want.  it will make me happy!"  And I am frequently wrong.

I walked in here after stepping over only 2 distinct piles of poo along the way.  That is an all-time low for Haight.  Inside, the smell was promising.  I ordered a slice of pepperoni.  First mistake.  WHY?  Why did I order pepperoni?  I don't even like pepperoni.  It's so greasy, and red, and never what I want.  Blah!  The pepperoni was indeed liquid red grease, slightly sweet.

The cheese on this pizza is also pretty nasty.  It's very very very salty.  TOO SALTY.  The crust was good.  But that's my eternal optimism shining through.  Chin up.

Finally, the price is now nearly $4 for a slice.  $4 to be reminded that my memory retention is like a frozen flagpole: irrelevant.

    So,

I just came from your pizza shop. I showed up around 11:20 PM, Sunday, Oct. 9th, and I hope whoever the boss of the girl working is reads this. I have been buying pizza here for well over a decade, and have never been treated so poorly. I asked for an extra topping on my slice, and after hesitation, the girl behind the counter told me they dont have any. Now, if I was a 1st timer, I would have thought nothing of it, but since I have been getting toppings besides cheese on my pizza for years(shocker), I knew better. Now, I understand that it's Sunday, and Im sure she wanted to go home, but 11:20? No toppings, really? Bad form young lady. We all have jobs, I personally work 3 of them, 60-70 hrs a week, and my clients would fire me instantly if pulled anything like this. Unacceptable. On top of her dishonesty, it seemed a bother to her that I was even in the shop.

This rant has nothing to do with the pizza, its delicious. She on the other hand has no right to be dealing pizza there, or anywhere else for that matter. McDonalds is right down the street honey, right where you belong.

My apologies to the owner. Please find a new employee.

    Sincerely,

    Jerome

In high school I worked at a day camp right off Castro Street and went to that Escape From New York Pizza on the reg. Recently I was starving and had just dropped a friend off at her home up the street from this location so I stopped by for a slice.

For the quality of that slice, it was massively overpriced. I was sad about this, because I remembered their pizza being so good. My crust was also pretty charred making that part of it inedible.

I don't think I will revisit this location, but I am open to going back to the Castro location and checking them out again.

My friends and I were starving and drove from Union Square and around S.F. We were supposed to go to an Italian restaurant in the vicinity of this place, but we were HUNGRY. As fate would have it, we found parking and what do you know, we were on Haight and stumbled upon this little gem (I'm so glad because it probably saved us $75).

We loved it. Nice thin cripsy large pizza slices. I had that potato garlic pizza. It was nice and different. I also tried the standard veggie and that was good too!

The place is quiet small but it has a lot of character. I'd come back again for a quick bite if I was back in the area.

There's a number of pizzerias in San Francisco that have made a name for themselves and Escape From New York Pizza is one of them.  LivingSocial ran a sale for a voucher of $20 worth of food for $10 and I was game.  My plan was to get some some EFNY before seeing 'The Human Centipede 2' at The Bridge theater.

Being a Friday night, I expected parking to be an issue, but there was a spot right in front of EFNY. However,  I wouldn't suggest coming during peak hours, especially since its in such a busy area--Haight.  The place is small and has a hipster atmosphere, given the hippy district.  The pizzeria has three or four pies with slices ready to go out.

The menu has about 15 specialty pies ranging from veggie to the patron favorite, the 'You Say Potato' pie.  I prefer veggie pies and ordered accordingly. The veggie pie included mushrooms, olives, onions, tomatoes, and green peppers.  The pie took a good 15 minutes before being served.

The pie looked appetizing and was steamin' hot.  The crust was crispy and somewhat thick.  I took my first bite and it tasted as good as it looked.  The veggies were fresh, the red tomato sauce was zesty and the melted mozzarella cheese was gooey goodness.  Although the pie is far from crazy great, it's something I would definitely have again.

Talk about customer service!!! My friend and I stumbled in drunk and ordered two slices each. After hiking around the city and hiking during the day we were famished!

I only had 15 bucks in cash and needed another 1.20 when the cashier dug out of his own pocket and put 1.20 in the drawer.  Bonus karma points for you handsome black guy and I promise to pay it forward because you just don't see such kindness anymore. Cheers!

Thanks for a great pizza!  My two friends and I ate there twice while we were in SF (within a week), once in the Castro and the other time on Haight St.

The service was excellent at both as was the 'za.  The potato and artichoke was new and innovative (and excellent) and the pepperoni was as, IMHO, as good as it gets.  Prices were cheaper than I know in Chicago.

Simply a great pizza.  Not to be missed if you are in either n'hood.

Also, I needed a receipt and their back office went above and beyond to get me a copy.

    Enjoy!

I really respect that even though it was past closing time, they stayed open to let all the hungary drunks get a slice of pizza.
Normally I really can't stand thinner crust pizza, but for some how they're really mastered it here.  Not too crunchy, but not too much.  I had the cheese pizza, nothing too crazy, but I really enjoyed the sauce.

I love to just go here when I am really hungry and want a slice. The prices are very good for slice. They warm your slice before you have it which is really nice. I love the inside and the decorations of signed pictures of bands and local celebrities including Tim Lincecum. I am a mushroom a holic so I always go for any pizza with mushrooms and theirs is wonderful. I love that they have medium to thin crust. Its great that its open late night in the haight.

This place is my go-to for something quick on my lunch break. The slices are big, I usually just get one and I'm happy. Their cheese slices are fine, but my favorite is the "U Say Potato," which has giant chucks of garlic and potatoes and pesto sauce. Yummmmmm.

Came here yesterday & tried the "Pesto" pizza as well as the "Watsonville".

Let me start off by saying that service was alright, it wasn't great and it wasn't bad. The shop itself is pretty small, a lot of the tables were pushed together & there was only cheese & pepper shaker that went around.

The pesto pizza was alright; thin crust, greasy on the top. Meh. It looked a lot better than it tasted.

However, the Watsonville pizza was pretty good, it had tomatoes & artichokes on top. Yum yum. It wasn't greasy or felt heavy.

I spent $8 & something cents for 2 slices of pizza. Decent pricing I guess you can say. Overall, I give this a place a 3 star. 1 for pizza, 1 for service & 1 for location. I love Haight St.

I was a bit pessimistic about this at first - I'm not proud, I picked this spot for dinner primarily because it was late and places that were still open were few and far between.  I'm an NYC native (here on vacation) and had heard from a few friends living here that the pizza scene was pretty sad.

I stuck with my standard, and got a cheese slice.  Super basic.  It was oddly good!  I'm not a total pizza snob, and have only thrown out unfinished pizza once in my life due to unpalatability (I think that's a pretty decent track record).

The slice itself: The crust was somewhat tasty, but a little on the thick side.  Sauce was good, as was the cheese.  I didn't find it to be incredibly greasy, I actually kinda marveled that I could hold the slice not perfectly parallel with my table and not have grease dripping everywhere.  Folding it in half produced this weird "cheese bump" though, which made eating kind of difficult.  Oh well, if this is the downfall of my day, I've got a pretty sweet life.

Three stars because it's decent pizza (I would give it 3.5 stars if I could, but it's def not a 4), but nothing out of this world.

To sound like a broken record of other posters here, it wouldn't be a big deal in NY - it kind of tastes like neighborhood pizza.  And not the regular guy you always go to for your pies...this tastes like the other pizza guy from a few blocks down and around the corner that you go to when your regular pizza guy is on vacation.  It'll do in a pinch, but really you just want your pizza guy back.  What was I talking about again?

Oh yeah.  So in summation: Pizza was good, would come back again if I find myself in SF once more.

I have some fond memories of being a 15 year old scarfing down Escape from NY pizza after shopping for some 90's goth clothes on Haight Street and relishing the notion that my mother would have a fit if she knew I was within a 5 block radius of this neighborhood.

Fast forward to what feels like a lifetime later, I'm in the Upper Haight and going over all the reasons why I, for lack of a better word, hate this neighborhood. Drug peddlers, vagabonds, and tourists are the first that come to mind.

So, having been basically ignored at Kezar, I was starving for lunch and a slice a pizza would certainly do the trick. I walked into Escape from NY for the first time in ten years and noticed nothing had changed. Still had the giant NY Subway map and a signed pic of George Carlin from the 80's.

Would a tourist from New York be impressed with their pie? Probably not. But in my opinion, this was a thin slice done right: Crispy, cheesy, and delicious. The pesto sprinkled with some hot pepper flakes was so good, I'd actually take them over Nizarios when it comes to a hole in the wall by the slice for the pure fact of the thinner crust = less calories.

Their pizzas are delicious!!! Their thing crust is so good and just enough crispy. I had a potato and pepperoni, sausage, bell pepper slice-of-the-day. They were both good. The potato had too much garlic for my liking, but overall it was very flavorful and I like that the potato pieces were soft. The slice-of-the-day was yummy. I like that their pizzas are not overly greasy. Boyfriend had a pesto slice that was just okay and the bottom of his slice was burnt! I guess it was just his bad luck because the rest of us had good slices. He should have asked for another slice.

    They only take cash!

Also, they only had one parmesan and pepper shaker. They should have small ones on every table. I like my parmesan!! Tables were pretty cramped, hard to get in and out. The place is small so it's probably better to just get take out.

So... If you are the type of person who likes to try great places to eat and don't care about ambiance, you should try this place.
