Great atmosphere and really quirky. Parking is usually pretty good too. The coffee/tea are solid, and the selection of snacks and food is better than you'd expect for a little coffee shop. The prices are actually a bit lower than most other places, so thats great too. Plus - its open 24 hours! Great for late night work or study sessions.

The internet connection is fantastic! Even with tons of people, its always fast and convenient. I live south, and the location isn't super easy... but I am always glad I came.

Came here to study once with some friends. The music and chatter was too loud for my taste so I had to leave after an hour. The first friend that got there reserved a table for four of us but a lady sat down at it and refused to move even though my friend told her other people were coming. When the rest of us came to sit down she continued to sit there even though it was very awkward and crowded haha.

Very busy for a weeknight... There was like NO parking in the lot and no empty tables inside. The coffee was okay and a cookie I had was okay too. Definitely an "A-OK" place. Seems pretty Austin-y

I think I was probably at Epoch just about every night over this past summer, and into the fall, too. There's nothing quite like a frosty blended dirty chai drink when its 95 degrees at 3am and you've been on your bike for a few hours.

Even better for me (at the time, anyway) was the part of the patio where smoking is allowed. Actually, even as a non-smoker (ok, I switched to e-cigs) during the cooler parts of the end of 2011, this was still where I would choose to sit when I brought my homework in and elected for hot dirty chai drinks rather than iced.

Others have already described the "grandma's basement" style of furnishing and the diverse crowd you'll find here at various hours, but I feel it warrants an extra mention that Epoch is open 24/7. There's really not enough of that in this town, as evidenced by the fact that Epoch, much like every place that is open after 2am, is nearly packed after the bars close, particularly on weekends.

When it gets a little warmer out and I'm back to riding my bike places (it's true about the lack of parking), I'll definitely be resuming my blended dirty chai habit. The only thing that could make me more loyal to Epoch for my middle of the night craves is fresh fruit, nuts, or some other gluten-free sort of treat.

To begin with: very eclectic. Both the customer base and the employees are varied. Depending on what time of day you come, you'll catch a different scene.

The coffee is average, not bad. A lot of reviewers say it is hard to find a seat, but I've never experienced a time with absolutely no seats left.

Music on the house stereo is just as eclectic and it is never too loud, but you can hear it for sure. They've got (vegetarian) pizza from Eastside Pies, baked goods from Quack's over in Hyde Park, and some other local vendors' products to eat.

Bottom line: I recommend Epoch if you want to go hang somewhere without a lot of pretension you find at other Austin shops, and if you want to pay reasonable prices.

Ah, Epoch, I love you. Great spot to hang out and get some writing done, but don't go on Friday or Saturday nights and plan to get any work accomplished because it's packed to oblivion.
Coffee is good & cheaper than Starbucks and I believe they even have a bit more variety than the big chain store does. I'm also a huge fan of the out door patio for us smoker types. And I dig the 24/7 aspect. More coffee shops need to do that.

TIP: Try the Mojo. It will wake you up and keep you up. It's also quite tasty.

Everyone already knows that this is a great place to hang out after hours to read, study, write, whatever, because it is open 24 hours..... BUT, the kicker is that they have frikkin board games! WHAT?! I think that's awesome. I mean I don't really go out to play board games, but it is cool to be able to play a game of chess over some chai every once in a while. It's a subtle touch but I give them the utmost props for the thought.

This is one of those places where you can see XL men in XS button up shirts that are miraculously buttoned up all the way with 6 inch gaps between each button. My mom went once and saw a man with hair down to his butt and a large tobacco pipe sharpen a knife for over an hour. Characters like this are sprinkled between college students and average joes, and they make this place special. For best results go after 9pm.

I usually go here late at night and opt to get the milk and honey rather than a latte. Its delicious. Everything I've had here is good, although I haven't tried any of their food, just the drinks.

I only give it four stars because sometimes the characters you see make you feel highly uncomfortable and maybe even fear for your life a little bit. But other than that the place is laid back and casual, perfect for midnight get togethers.

Excellent place for coffee, relaxing, working, board gaming, pizza and pastries. The coffee is *very* caffeinated. My favorites are the ice blended chai and mocha, though the coffee that they use is so good, I could get just about anything and be content.

P.S. - Avoid this place as a hangout during finals weeks, you'll be lucky to find a place to sit.

EPOCH is an eclectic little gem in the middle of a residential neighborhood.  They serve any kind of coffee drink and some eats such as muffins, cinnamon rolls, wraps, pizza puffs, etc.  The food selection and quality lacks but they make up for it with the great drinks.

I love how grunge this place is.  Tables don't match tables, chairs don't match any on the other 3 sides and even the patrons don't match ; hippies to ties to burnouts to hipsters to college students.

My 22 year old son came for a 3 day visit and we hit 3 places:  Epoch, Mozarts and Genuine Joe's.  We played chess at each one during his stay so we were there for awhile.  I asked which he liked best and he said Epoch.

The bathrooms are a fun visit if you want to read and laugh at the insane comments those before you scribed on the walls (bring a magic marker).

The shop sits in an old (1960's) strip mall consisting of a retro clothing store, record store and some type of employment placement business (I think).  Parking is ample yet does get crowded.  They have a large wooden deck (covered).  Check out the modified Starbucks sign on the back wall as you stand at the counter.  Pretty funny.

Epoch has plenty of seating and parking for a coffee shop yet it's so busy that it's nearly impossible to park your ass or car there no matter what time you visit (it's open 24 hours).

The coffee is good.  High marks for anything with chocolate (mexican hot chocolate, iced mocha, etc).  Nice coup having Quack's baked goods - have tried both the pumpkin bread and chocolate chip cookie and both were fresh.  If you're desperate for.more, they sell East Side Pies by the slice.  They have beer but can't imagine it being too fun getting drunk in an unofficial UT library.

If they don't have any seats inside, there is usually something available outside.  The used couches inside have seen better days.  Free wi-fi and plenty of plugs.

Best if you live in the area (and can walk or bike) or like your coffee shops to be a bit of a scene.  Check out Flightpath if you want something more mellow.

    What is the big deal?

    Pro:
    Free wifi,
    Open 24 hours
    Near vintage clothing store
    Great for people watching

    Cons:
    -Terrible coffee except iced mojo
    -Crowded

Perhaps I will feel differently if I experience it at a less crowded, late night hour.

I must admit, I'm not a coffee drinker.  So for me to judge a place whose business model is to pander to the late night, web surfing, caffeine addicted crowd isn't exactly expedient.  However, I think it's worthwhile for me to give my two cents for those who don't frequent coffee shops often, but want the skinny anyway.

Don't come here if you're interested in wholesome, flavorful, well-crafted foods.  Though I haven't tasted their whole menu, I wasn't impressed with what I ate.  Then again, I'm rarely blown away by danishes, brownies, and cinnamon rolls.  The bagels aren't great, and their sandwiches are pre-wrapped and unappetizing.

I did enjoy the outdoor patio and the free wifi, so if you're looking for a place to drink soda while you read, hammer out some online homework, or just enjoy the crowds, I'd say stop by.  But there are a number of quality coffee shops that offer high quality food in town, so I'd explore a bit more before you settle on Epoch.

    The good:

-This place is open 24 hours.

    -It's centrally located.

    -It serves coffee.

-The above points make it a useful study spot, when you can find tables.

    The bad:

-The atmosphere and decor is pointedly "eclectic," as are the folks who come here.  Epoch is not eclectic by accident.  It didn't just wake up one day, look in the mirror, and say, "gee, looks like I'm eclectic."  The way this place is decorated, furnished with vintage chairs and couches, and dimly lit feels like a contrived effort to attract hipsters and people from other subcultures.  Those types of affectations are irritating.  They're obviously effective, though, because this place is always full of hipsters and other clientele with affectations.

-The coffee ranges from passable to horrid.  I typically get black, hot coffee, which is nothing special, but it's not bad.  However, my girlfriend got an iced coffee that tasted like sour dirt.  I would be pissed if I got coffee that bad from a gas station.  It tasted like somebody shat a pickle into a cup.

-The staff is sometimes ok, but sometimes leisurely and aloof to the point of being rude.  I have been at the counter for five minutes before anyone came over to take my order.  The general impression I get from the people who work here is that they're entitled to your business and are doing you the favor by getting your coffee.

-It's open 24 hours, so despite the above points, it's popular as a study spot.  This is a positive, but also a negative, as it can be very difficult to find an open table sometimes, or even parking.

In short, Epoch is what happens when Austin's fetish for "weirdness" and independent business gets out of hand.  You get pretentious people flocking in droves to a place with a pretentious atmosphere, mediocre service, and subpar products.  There are better coffee options out there--including Starbucks.

Remeber when Mojos used to be on the drag? yah... i miss that old place too.

open 24 hours parking is still a bitch. Thank Jesus the iced Mojo survived the move.
regular coffee here is a gamble sometimes its really bad other times its manageable, but the mojo never let me down. I wouldnt eat here unless its crazy late. Just remember  theres other 24hour spots around town, plus two theres loads of places to eat at and explore just up the road going east if its durring regular business hours.  I started coming here more not for the coffee but for the record store next door, at this point the Mojo is a bonus.

This is a  good place to camp out at if you can catch a seat and can handle fog water for black coffee. A little flask action would probably balance out the hot coffee and boost the Mojo.

Sorry, but Epoch is the absolute worst shithole ever.

This place is so not for me.  Dirty, crowded, and dumb.  No exaggeration, 5 times in a row I attempted to go here in the wee hours and there was no parking space, so I left.   If I got lucky and snagged the only parking space, the line would be 10 people long, so I'd just turn around and leave.  If there wasn't much of a line, I'd look around and find there's nowhere to sit.  NO room at the coffeshop.  No matter what the hour.  The patio is loud and smoky and the people are talking about stupid things.

On my 6th attempt to patronize the Epoch, this over the course of 2 months, I finally got a parking spot, no line, and found literally the last table, so I actually hung out.   But it just feels so wrong and creepy in there.  It's not comfortable among all those people at those packed-in tables on the filthy, FILTHY chairs.  And their oven fills the room with nasty smoke every time they heat up/burn a pizza slice (pizza always looks burnt).  Plus the dishwasher fills the room with a strong bleachy smell every time they do a load, about every 10 minutes.  And the people smell.  There are some highly unsavory characters hanging out there all the damn time.  And they play Bjork albums in their entirety, loud, and it's just stupid.

It's too bad about this place.  24 hours are wonderful, but what's it matter if it's open when you can't get in, it might as well be closed.   There's a full-time, live-in homeless population or something guaranteeing that normal customers can't find a seat, even after 6 attempts.  Seriously, I'm convinced at least half the people in there are career Epoch-hanger-outers, or they're actually living there rent-free.

    Here's a story:
Once upon a time there was a dying little seedling by the cash register and the girl in line in front of me goes, "your plant could use some water", and the guy behind the counter goes "It's not my plant."   !?? What!??  ! ??  What a weird, wrong-headed thing to say!   Poor seedling, trying to grow up in this abusive stupid home.  This place is all so very Wrong.

Here's another story:  Once upon a time a lunatic who claimed to work here came on to Yelp and offered to spit in your coffee if you don't tip for every drink.  Personally, I do tip for every drink (deserved or not), but the last time I was there I saw a 2-gallon vase on the counter packed tight with money, lots of $5's showing through the glass.  I will bet you that vase of money that Epoch "baristas" (if you can call them that, they sling weak, burnt Costco coffee and don't know what an Americano is) must be making a heck of of a lot more than $2.35  an hour, so really, the petulant demanding for more money punishable by A SPIT IN YOUR CUP!!??????? (what kind of lowlife maniac does that!!!), really, really unnecessary, children.  Madness here, classless insanity.

Hereby promising never to go again.  Not that I can after this review.  I fear they might recognize me and spit in my coffee since the employees admit to being not above such things.  Not that spit would detract much from what is already at zero quality to begin with.

    Epoch is a big turd.

My distant Aunt Velma died in the 1980's when I was a kid.  My grandmother and I had to go help clean out her stuff.  She was a big fan of garage sales, and had attended many such sales in the 1960's and 1970's hence her home was like a hoarder's vacation spot, filled to the brim with mis-matched furniture from various decades past:  a sofa here, a coffee table there, an armchair over here in an entirely different pattern and era than the next.  Walking into Epoch Coffee is like stepping back in time with the exact same lay-out as my Aunt Velma's house.

This is actually what makes Epoch so cool.  It can be stuffed to the brim with UT college students and there is still a random chair/table/couch available somewhere.  I love that about this place.  There is something mental about needing to get work done and having it be an easier time when you do so around lots of people.  This is the environment you find here.

I of course had to try the iced mojo.  It is a milky white chai drink that reminds me a lot of the chai drink from Black Forest bakery in Dallas (though I hate to say Black Forest is better, iced mojo comes in a close 2nd).

I love the fact this place has outdoor seating and is open 24 hours.  I have a feeling I may join the ranks of Errol and Ashley as this being my favorite read-a-book-or-get-stuff-done-on-laptop-hang-out spot.

LOL! Now how do I put this? Every time I go goo-goo and gah-gah over some place like Barley Swine or Uchiko, I find myself somewhere I've never been to before, like Epoch, and realize this is exactly why I love Austin. (Okay, I'm actually in Austin because I followed some woman here, but that doesn't make for a snappy Yelp opening and she's long gone.)

When it comes to friends, stylists, and coffeehouses, I'm pretty much a hardcore loyalist and won't deviate from paths I've chosen, so there really has to be some Divine Intervention before I try someplace different. Now I'm not exactly equating Daniel J. with a message from Above, but he really wanted to come here on a Monday afternoon, so what the hell.

And I felt right at home: From the huge interior to the non-smoking patio to the street-side patio for us smokers, to the bagels and Danish and Mexican Coke, to the laptops and iPads and delightful young ladies who couldn't care less about shaving their legs, it's all here, and it's all good. I can take or leave coffee drinks loaded with lactose and flavorings, but that's part of the Epoch charm, and they do it as well as anywhere else. I guess I should be more objective and think of something specific to bitch about, but honestly? I thought this place was just great.

It seemed important to Daniel that I note and visit the pair of unisex bathrooms here named "Heaven" and "Hell," so I did, and Heaven seemed a little half-assed. I may have confused the two. Does it make Epoch any less of a proverbial perfect Austin respite? Nope. What a wonderful place for me to feel young and foolish in.

Yep, I've been here a few more times now and this place is the fucking bean bomb!

It's all about the experience for me and Epoch is far and away the best coffee shop experience in Austin.

Is there better coffee in Austin?  Yeah, there is better coffee to be had elsewhere.

But...is there a better place in Austin to just hang out in total comfort, sip some bean juice and surf away?  No, there is not.

Kinda like a pair of well-worn slippers - Epoch is a very comfortable place - awash with outlets and excellent seating options.

It's a welcoming place too, so come as you are.  And yes, you will see others who aren't exactly like you but that's a good thing, isn't it?!  You may just want to move in - I do.

I absolutely adored this coffee shop on my last visit to Austin. If I lived here, mark my words, I would live HERE. Quite literally. Open 24/7 and with welcoming touches like power strips dangling from every table, they don't ever want you to leave. The baked goods were great and there was a wide assortment of juices and teas, but the espresso-based drinks are what really won me over. Expertly made and without a hint of bitterness, I had to restrain myself from ordering more than two.

Bathroom graffiti is a hoot - be sure to check both stalls.

If there were ever any relationship that would prevent me from quitting my forbidden love of coffee cold turkey, it would be this place. This is my favorite coffee shop in all of Austin. For this coffee shop snob, I have a hard time going anywhere else.

Fact: I do not go to public places to be alone with my laptop (it would be imaginary since I do not own one) and then scowl at others for not being quiet. This is something that I will never understand. I must note this place is not your typical *hush hush* coffee shop. The music tends to be quite loud here, for studying purposes in my opinion.

Outlets hang from the ceiling randomly for those who require the use of technology while basking in the public eye.

The baristas are always friendly and eclectic, and although I am not hip enough to attend this gem of a coffee shop, they treat me like anyone else who might dress in the appropriate attire with attention-grabbing tattoos in painful looking places.

Their iced mojo at any hour can almost seem medicinal. It is a must everytime I drop by.

For some reason I love this place, even though it can at times be hard to park or even find a place to sit. Its one of the few places in Austin that is open 24 HOURS...so in my mind that makes up for all of the parking/seating issues.

If you are in the mood for good, strong coffee, and need to spend all night job hunting, tweaking your resume, or writing a paper, you'll love this place. Its also in a great part of town so if you're new to the area, its a great place to check out! In my humble opinion their coffee blows Thunderbird and Austin Java out of the water.

I can get stuff done here when I need to study because of the Iced Mojo. A good blend of whatever is in it! Pastries and pizza are decent as well.

The only bad experience I have had here was when the A/C was broken. I was literally sweating the entire time and my computer was overheating. Other than that, I can deal with the music and people. However, I get pretty sad when it's all filled up, and I have to take a coffee to go and go back home. Sad face.

Really great place. A/C indoors is great. There's a band usually playing. Has outdoor seating. Great location for groups before and after your bar hopping night. A place where you can get food and drinks which is a plus.
They also have some interesting art on the walls.

    Pros:

    Medium Groups
    Small Groups
    Social Atomasphere
    interesting scenery
    Good for Meeting New People

    Cons:

    limited indoor seating
    Avg Service
    Avg Food

This is my favorite coffee house in Austin my a long shot.  I've tried many coffee shops to study in since I'm in med school, but this is by far where I go to get work done or meet up with friends.

    Pros:
-Open 24 hours, I could be so productive!
-Awesome music; they play the entire album, which is great when you love the album.  I've found out about several bands that I now love through being here.
-Outdoor seating on a nice night
-Indoor seat for medium and small groups
    -Lots of power outlets
    -Solid coffee and tea
-I love checking out the graffiti in the Heaven and Hell themed bathrooms.
-Breakaway records and the resale store next door are fun to browse in when you're waiting to meet up with your group or to take a study break.

    Cons:
-Limited seating: you have to patrol for a table and I've had to join with other soloers.  Great if you're friendly, but can be a pain.
-They play the entire album of the music, so if it's an album you're not into you could be in for an hour of super loud tuba music while you're trying to get work done.

One day if they expanded into the shop next door and had more tables I could whole-heartedly give this place 5 stars since they REALLY need more seating.

Update: air conditioning issue has been fixed.  Thanks to user Jessica D. for pointing this out.

Pros:  Maybe the best place in Austin to set up your laptop (can plug in anywhere), good drinks, nice staff.  Best of all the place and the area have sort of a low-maintenance, downtempo artsy feel that I really, really like.  All kinds of people in all kinds of dress come here and I dig that.  In terms of mood, this is my favorite place in Austin.

Very green place -- they seem to recycle almost everything out back.  User messaged me and told me to just put anything recyclable in the bus bins.  Wish they would put up some posters or something that say this.

Recommend: a large, iced latte with dutch chocolate.  Soy or regular milk are great.  Wow.

    Cons:

    * Ok food (go for the pizza), music selection sometimes awesome, sometimes grating.

    * Frequently very full; it seems the best times to come are early in the day.  I can't fault Epoch for this as they have obviously gone to some ends to expand and offer as many tables as possible.  Still, it means I won't go out of my way to go to a place where I can't get work done.

I live next door to them. Open 24 with drinks, grub, smokes, games, and wifi. There Dutch mocha is the best. Try a mojo for a quick fix on a hot day too. They also have live music from time to time and the staff is the best! They all know me by name and provide excellent service.

Great place to get laptop work done.  Tons of power plugs and seating inside.  Plus it is open 24/7.

The coffee is pretty good but the Mexican Chocolate Mocha is really what you want to get.

If I need to study, unwind from work or get away from the craziness in life, I always choose Epoch.
The ONLY reason why it's a four rather than a five is because during finals the there is no room in their parking lot or at a table. This is impressive because the place is huge with outdoor and indoor seating. They have funky lamps everywhere and plugs for laptops. The staff is friendly and they always have great music playing. The iced mate and pizza are to die for. There's free wifi, local newspapers, board games and it's open 24 hours. I'm reluctant to post this because I would hate for it to become "scene". Epoch's culture is fine the way it is, thank you.

Let me put it this way, I came here everyday for six months and didn't tire of it.

I can confidently say that Epoch is a great place to sit back with a drink of your choice, taking in the quirky attitude that is simply Austin. Epoch is one of the first places I encountered during my first year in Austin and within moments, I felt this great sense of relaxation. It's a great place to study late into the night.

If you start feeling hungry while studying, they also make thin crust pizza slices and treats like pumpkin bread (which is my favorite).

Also, be prepared to search for a seat. Every time I go it takes a while find a place to sit.

It's easy to like Epoch. Not the best coffee shop in Austin, but maybe the best on the north side. They pull a decent espresso and have a solid selection of eats.

There is always a place to plug in and the Wifi is dependable.

The people watching is pretty good too.

I love this place. The coffee is always good and the staff is awesome.

Go in there and ask Rich, black beard and a hat, to surprise you with something. I always do and I'm never disappointed.

If Epoch was a human, it would totally be my best friend.

I love the iced mojo and the chai shake. The food selection is also pretty good, but I usually just stick with drinks since I'm a broke college student. It's open 24 hours and the baristas are just as friendly at 2am as they are at 2pm, which is something I can't say about most 24 hour establishments, so huuuge plus for that.

This might not be the best place for you if you are trying to study but are easily distracted. The music can get pretty loud, there's a plethora of interesting people to observe, and they have board games.

Basically, Epoch is perfect for socializing and almost perfect for late night studying. Now go!

Coffee was passable (I had the mexican mocha) but the ambience was excellent. It reminded me of the little quaint Seattle coffee shops. If I lived in Austin I would definitely hang out here. Plus, it's 24 hours. You can't beat that!

    Espresso: mediocre - if I remember right, they use a one-touch, push-button machine -- if I want that no-skill crap, I'll go to S***bucks

    Wi-fi: fair, had some drops

Outlets: fair - grab one dangling from the ceiling, pray they don't short out

Seating: good number of seats across multiple rooms

Cafe: a bit of chaos to please the hipsters

Baristi: friendly, though I have no idea if they can pull a good shot with the push button machine they use
