For all the delicious coffee in Seattle, we are seriously lacking in awesome 24 hour coffeeshops. I love my city but if I could import Epoch I would do it in a heartbeat. Lots of outlets for people who need to work/study with the free wifi, lots of reading material/coziness for people who want to be social and kick it with friends, big tables for groups, small tables for loners, outdoor patio for the smokers... it rules.
Friendly & hilarious baristas too.
I like the plethora of extension cords hanging inconspicuously :) above most tables. they don't keep brewed decaf coffee on the ready so I have to opt for a decaf Americano. not a huge deal but more $. I also like the use of all the different mugs.
the staff is hit and miss, and as you would expect alot of people have their laptops open and free wi-fi connected so not really a place neccesarily to meet or converse with people but I suppose that's the way of the world now...
Lots o' space and with the outdoor seating which is particularly good to have when the weather cooperates. Overall it's got a good vibe -better than Thunderbird but not a good as Genuine Joe's.
I'm on the fence about sharing this review, b/c a good coffee place is hard to find. As a student, it's my favorite place to study. There's pretty much an outlet available anywhere you sit, and the place is a cozy place to hang at night. And yes, their Mexican mocha/ iced mocha/ chocolate is amazing and addictive. There are, of course times where it's difficult to find a table, but less so than most of the other cafes in town. Staff has always been friendly enough, food is typical cafe food, so eating before you come if you plan to stay for a while would be my advice.
As far as parking goes, I've never had a problem, but maybe I've not been going out high-peak times. Not nearly as bad as Flightpath or Bennu. The staff have pretty good taste in music, but if it bothers you, just bring headphones, and you'll be good.
By far my favorite coffee shop in Austin. I love the eclectic decor, and people. The coffee itself is the best though. I wish I knew where they got their beans.
Good Coffee. Good Hibiscus Tea. Smells delicious, and you pop two doors over and you can do some shopping for vintage threads. Who doesn't love a 24 hour coffee shop? There needs desperately to be more of them.
I'm on the fence about Epoch.
Open 24 hours, which is a rare and beautiful butterfly in this city.
I've personally never had any issues with the staff, they've all seemed rather friendly to me... and I really think the no buying drinks = no hanging out and using their wifi policy is totally fair. It's usually insanely busy and they are running a business; so any non-paying butts in their chairs could be filled by paying butts, so be a paying butt if you want to loiter around for hours.
The mojo is excellent. My pal Anthony would venture to Epoch when we all worked at Austin Books and save my retail brain with this delectable caffeinated beverage.
I also really enjoy all the dangly vintage lamps and busted arm chairs. It's like a super classy bum's mini mansion.
People watching here can also be pretty entertaining, and I quote "is it technically necrophilia if you totally bone while someone's dying?". So precious.
The only reason it gets 3 stars is purely based on the fact that I don't really find hanging out at a coffee shop forever to be much of a party.
Butts,
Susan
This is my hangout during crunch time. It's 24 hours which is awesome and they have indoor and outdoor seating. The music at night can be a bit loud inside sometimes, so I like to sit in the non-smoking side.
They serve Eastside Pies pizza here! It's good at two in the morning! :) And their Mexican Hot Chocolate is AMAZING! I've tried it at other places but none can compare. I'm sure it's really bad for you, but it's sooo yummy.
I like this place over Bennu because they have more outlets. Even tables in the middle of the room have outlets hanging from above. It's very convenient.
I do have to say that it is quiet a hipster place. Lots of people go there to look and be looked at. Some nice looking folks so no harm there, but when you're trying to get a table to study... it can be annoying. It's a big gay hangout place as well.
The staff is really nice. They'll rush you sometimes when it's ultra busy. The bald guy always calls everyone 'babe.' Hehe, I kinda like it.
Oh, parking sucks.
by zues's beard the mexican mocha is addictive! not much of a hanger outer, but it looks like some people camp out there for the vibe and surroundings. lots of nice stuff to look at! the only reason i dont rate it out of this world is because during peak times, it feels a bit like a library and people look at you all crazy if you have too much coffee and get crazy!
but really, i am just complaining. its a great spot...and DAMN that mexican mocha!!!
I like Epoch. I'm a night owl and I like knowing I can go somewhere and get an iced mocha if that's what I need to keep pushing on til dawn.
By the way, try the mocha with Mexican chocolate. Very cinnamon-y and delicious.
I've rarely gone there to study, since I'd rather be there to socialize, but it's not the place to try and read difficult material that takes concentration. Mostly I just type notes and hum along to the music.
There are 2 outside porches, 1 smoking and 1 non. Parking can get dicey at times. Not that there isn't ample parking, but it's usually pretty crowded. I don't mind this--it means they'll stay in business.
We were in search of a coffee shop that was in between 290/183 and Great Hills and also open after 11pm. We could have gone to Bennu, but we'd been there several times already, wanted to try something new.
Epoch was a great choice! There was plenty of seating and we found a nice big table where we sat and crocheted. The iced mocha was strong, the staff was very friendly, and the vintage decor had a cozy feeling.
Epoch is a nice cafe, they have a good selection of food and drinks. They have plenty of seating inside and out. The espresso drinks are good but not great, but the coffee always seems very fresh. They have a nice selection of food, including East Side Pies, wraps, sandwiches, chips, etc. They also have root beer on tap, a _big_ plus in my mind. Of course, they stay open 24/7 which is a great draw. The service is usually very good, but every so often you might run across a rude employee. Everyone has a bad day/night, so I don't take it personally.
Please keep in mind- this is not a place to have a quiet date or to study in peace (trust me on this one). Most nights Epoch employees crank the music which serves to keep tired students awake but also has an unfortunate side effect: causing raging headaches after a few hours of desperately trying to finish your 40 page research project. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitter. In fact, I recommend Epoch in spite of the loud music. As several others have commented, this is the only 24 hour cafe's which are worth your time in the Austin area. Austin seem to agree because the place is always packed.
Highly recommended but with 1 caveat: Epoch is a great place to meet up with friends, and have coffee- not a library.
The only 24 hour coffee shop worth going to in this town. You might have trouble finding a seat, even outside. It's a great launching pad for that first date. It's great to study (people say the music's too loud - bollocks - it's only loud if you don't like what they're playing) but bring a power strip and make yourself popular.
The drinks are all delicious.
The baristas are all good, if not great. They often say "thank you" when you tip them, and judging by the puffy cloud of dollar bills in the jar they deserve each one.
Furniture's a little old/uncomfortable, but meh.
Rarely smoke, but I like the piston ashtrays. +plus.
The Wifi, naturally, is weak due to everybody and their mother pulling it in. This does not dock a star because I'd like to give Epoch 6 stars.
Cool coffee shop. I'm sitting here loving the vintage decor, ok drinks, and the awesome pizza!! All the seats are comfortable, and there's vintage lamps everywhere. I'm a sucker for vintage lampshades. Dont' ask why. I just had an strawberry cream Italian soda, a Yerba Matté (doesn't taste anything like Argentina's real yerba matté). I think it's more of the environment that I love. There is music constantly playing which is awesome because I LOVE music. It's a great place for bringing friends and chilling out. I came here to get a little work done, and if you can tune out the external noise, you will be able to do so too.
Their coffee is ok and not great, but the people are super nice. I have a love-hate affair with the restrooms here because they are unisex... which means both of them smell like urine! BUT their decor is super cool. You can choose between Heaven and Hell. Whoever did the painting of the murals did an awesome job.
Plus side, there is almost an electrical outlet at every seating arrangement that they've put together. They really thought it out and knew people would be absorbing their energy! It's open 24 hrs and has an outdoor covered patio (2 areas) to convene with your friends!
Ok, so Epoch is on the opposite side of Austin for me, but I still travel here because, well its 24hrs and its a pretty nice atmosphere. Their regular brewed coffee is pretty good, nothing special but it was good. The espresso here, was actually one of the best I've had, it usually a hit or miss with me when it comes to espresso and this one was a hit.
-1 star because I can't really get any reading done here. Which is why I go to most coffee shops. The music is usually pretty loud.
It is, however, an awesome place to meet up with friends. The atmosphere doesn't require you to keep your voice down like many other places, so you can be pretty loud without feeling like you're offending anybody studying.
I am a No-Lo allstar! I have lived in this area for ten years, and have seen businesses come and go. I consider this area the baby sister of So-Co. I think this area is great and a nice way of spending a few hours in the sunshine.
Epoch is Nestled in the heart of No-Lo. It is a true gem of No-Lo.
These people know how to make coffee. The iced drinks are always strong and have the perfect blend of ice versus coffee. I like my coffee strong and sometimes decaf-soy-organic-iced with light foam style. Epoch can make it any way that you want it. 24 hours a day.
Plenty of seating and are dog friendly!
The service is good even when it is crowded out the wazoo! Well I have always gotten good service here. I really don't hang out here, I'm a to-go mostly, and not really a socializer.
One note about the crowd after reading the other reviews. I go during the day and don't notice a homeless people problem here.
Out of the three hundred and fifty million times I have gone here, I have only had one employee give me less than perfect service, which I think is normal considering people are human beings and not robots. I'm just not big on places where people have to pretend to be super excited to see me and upbeat as a corporate policy. Does "Welcome to Starbucks!! Would you like to try a pumpkin spice latte with a muffin?" ring a bell.....?
It is worth driving out of your way to visit Epoch. This place is study central with grad students on laptops. Great pizza that is served on plates from the seventies. I like the "Mojo" coffee drink, even though it's a little sweet.
Chill place. Cool people.
Great spot to work at, and it's the only 24-hour coffee shop that I've found in Austin.
Why does it get only two stars?
1) The baristas are not so friendly. Is it because I didn't tip last time? I tip only if the service makes an impression on me. It never has here.
2) The music can be a bit loud sometimes.
3) The place is usually packed, but maybe it's just because of the times that I show up.
I really dig this place. Even when it's crowded I for some reason never have trouble finding a place to sit. Finding a place with an outlet for your laptop might be a bit of a drag, but just make sure your notebook is good and charged if you're going to be using it while you're there.
The selection is pretty standard faire. Nothing outside the box, really, but I do dig the extra large mugs and glasses. When you order a large you DEFINITELY get a large.
The one thing that really bothers me about the place has to do with the outside: parking!
Although the lot is pretty large for a coffee shop, it's laid out such that only 70% of the spots are useable because you'd have to block someone else from backing out of their spot if you parked there. Also, the turn into the spot is the steepest drop ever. If you're going at any speed at all you will scrape the bottom of your car. So take it sloooooooow. You may look like a granny going over the bump, but at least you won't be leaving shards of your car behind.
Epoch is a bit more of a social coffee house than a working space, but of course you'll find a ton of people doing both just about whenever you show up, and it's 24 hours. It's definitely more hipster than young professional.
The coffee quality is a 7 out of 10 on my scale. (For reference: Starbucks is a 4, Mozart's is a 8.5.)
Epoch is a great eclectic mix of all that Austin has to offer.
I met a date here for the first time, there were people of all ages studying, working, hanging and your token Austin character that you aren't sure if they never "came back" from dropping acid in 60s.
If you need to go there with a computer....there are outlets everywhere...there are even outlets underneath the bar.
Beware if you are noise conscious, the baristas seem to randomly turn up the volume of the music during their favorite part of a song...but they normally turn it back down after it finishes. But it can make it difficult if you are trying to study or get to know someone.
This is one of new favorite coffee spots!
$2 gets you a giant glass mug of coffee. Dark or light roast, your choice.
The cinnamon rolls look funny and are delicious.
The food cost too much, but hopefully that's not how you pick your coffeeshop anyways.
The baristas are friendly if you don't act like a complete d-bag.
Bathrooms are unisex. Instead, choose between "heaven" and "hell."
Sit on the deck outside to smoke and socialize.
There are couches, armchairs, and tables inside.
Plenty of outlets.
Free wireless internet.
Open 24/7.
Yr crazy not to love this place.
Five stars because I fucking love this place now.

So maybe I went on a off night (Sunday) but I really didn't enjoy the crowd here. It was mostly… Read more »
There is no better coffee shop in the ATX that the weird scene has to offer.
Top Picks: 24-hours! Free WiFi with strong signal. Seating, seating and more seating (they've expanded to the very limits of their space)! Awesome espresso, drip, teas and the famed Iced Mojo. Two parking lots and street parking for overflow. Random acts of art, graffiti and odd-ball furniture. Outlets EVERWHERE! 9/10 baristas are immediately awesome people, with the other 1/10th being complete downers if not outright hostile. A crazy eclectic crowd, offering every range of conversation (and even drama). Tasty healthy wraps and the less healthy but just as tasty pizza selections. A truly unique environment.
That said, there are a few types of people who I would say to steer clear: Californians who can't stand even the slightest smell of cigarette smoke; scenesters who are looking for the next best thing, or the latest trend, and not the best-of-the-best; people who don't like people (as it gets crowded).
In one night you can talk with a rocker who just got back from a gig, a coder who is working remotely, a graphic designer working off of a tablet computer, a student who is cramming for an exam and even the local combat hippie who just got into a fight down at the bar. And that's just one table full of peeps.
I have personally taken $50 and spent more than 24-hours at Epoch, and was at the final night that the original Mojo's closed. Austin is truly blessed to have Epoch as a part of it. Because of this shop, other alternative stores have begun taking over the plaza, from Earth Arts to Blue Velvet Vintage Clothing. The only mundane place left to take over is the AA Meeting office, who have provided a constant source of complaints from many customers. Cross your tentacles. It'll happen.
Standard ATX Rules Apply: Bring a hoodie if you'll be in-doors and bring headphones if you don't like the music or aren't looking for conversation.
I love the iced Mojo. Supposedly it will keep you up for hours, but it does not seem to have that effect on me.
They can get pretty packed, especially during finals. I do not go there to study anymore because the music can be distracting, as well as people who are there to socialize. The library is your friend.
As far as interior decorating, the bathrooms are really neat. One is hell, and the other is heaven.
A nifty thing, you can keep a tab open. Just do not forget to close it out before you leave. I have only ever opened a tab with a credit card. Not sure if they allow you to do it another way.
This place is great when you just want to hang out with your friends and enjoy a great cup of coffee. There is odd music sometimes, but headphones cure that problem.
If you're not into trendy weird places, Epoch is not for you.
Over 100 reviews for this place, so I'll keep it short and sweet.
This place is just around the corner from where I live and I came here for the first time Friday afternoon. It's basically your standard Austin coffee house with post-rock loudly playing through the speakers and old, mismatched furniture. I had an iced mocha and it was very tasty. When I came here it wasn't crowded at all, but I've heard it can get pretty packed on the weekends.
Epoch has a monopoly on 24/7 coffee in this part of town (or any as far as I know). The place, in theory, exudes the perfect coffee shop atmosphere: attractive decor, good wifi, power outlets all over, lots of seating indoors and out, pizza from East Side Pies and other snacks at all hours, and tasty espresso/root beers/Mexican coke. As you're entering from the parking lot, you're positive you've found your new second home.
Enter the music. Most of the face-to-face experience I've had with the baristas has been positive. Most are pretty friendly. However, I have yet to witness a night shift barista with any consideration for the paying customers with respect to their music. Sometimes they'll blast weird Eurotrash gypsy music. Sometimes they'll blast relaxing Velvet Underground. But always they blast. It's some seriously loud shit in there. That's my main problem with Epoch, and that's why I only give them two stars.
If you're the type who can do work while blaring your own music through headphones, Godspeed. If you're some type A asshole who likes to be the loudest thing in the room, you'll love the competition. But if you came here to catch up on reading, to concentrate on homework, or even to have a casual conversation with a couple friends, turn back now. I've been here plenty of times to do some caffeine-fueled work late at night, and the music is irritating but manageable with my own loud music layered over it. I've also been here with out-of-town friends just to hang out, which prompted one's question: "Are they trying to mask the sound of goats being slaughtered upstairs?"
I speak only to the 11pm and later crew. The couple times I've stayed long enough to roll over into morning, it was actually unbelievably calm and peaceful there. If it's late and you want that perfect coffee shop experience about which I teased you before, take a nap at midnight and wake up at 6am for an early morning visit. Otherwise, stuff your ears with beeswax and strap your leader to the mast when making the voyage to Epoch.
This is my least favorite coffee shop I've been to in town. Though folks complain about how crowded this place gets, the few times I've been here, I was easily able to find a comfortable seat both inside and outside. Although, when I did sit outside, I had to leave shortly thereafter because every single person sitting outside was smoking. It just smelled like an ashtray out there. The coffee is also of mediocre quality as well. If you can't get drip coffee right, then something is wrong.
The place feels a little bit icky to me too. I don't know if that was mostly because of the clientele or if it was the actual coffee shop itself.
On the plus side, it is open at all hours and they offer free wifi (are there any coffee establishments that don't offer wifi these days though?).
This place is next to an AA meeting place. The caliber of guys who approach you of an evening just screams, 'We used to use liquid courage to fuel our creepy flirtations with drunk and easy women, but now soberly and clumsily creep out sober girls instead.'
No less than five times have I had a guy come up to me here to start a conversation \only to have him bring up in the first 10 minutes that he's an alcoholic.
Don't know what they teach you in AA, but while I appreciate honesty, that's more of a second-date revelation or an end-of-the-first date one, at the least.
Same with the AA/NA guy who gave me a link to his photo site ("I really want you to be my model," he crooned.) that included pictures of him, bare-butt naked. Second date, dude!
I love having a 24-hour coffee shop near my house, but after consistently encountering weirdo regulars (with the exception of the folks behind the counter, who are nothing but polite, fun and great at making drinks) and weird smells (with the exception of the tasty Mexican hot chocolate and the East Side Pies offerings!), I rarely ever think to come here anymore.
That's a shame.

No excuse for a dirty, scrap-hunting cat in a place where people eat and drink.
I like Epoch because… Read more »
I find it hilarious that people are criticizing Epoch for not tolerating loitering. The only problem I've ever had there is not having anywhere to sit because there are tables full of people not drinking anything taking up space.
I have several favorite coffee shops, each very different from each other, but Epoch is certainly among them. I love the variety of music and the very different personalities of the baristas, and it's fun to see people who used to hang out at Mojo's years ago.
I do generally avoid Epoch on weekend nights, though, due to overcrowding.
I'm still a big fan of Epoch Coffee and I decry those Yelp reviewers who get upset about being asked to leave. Do you seriously think you have a right to take up space in a business establishment without buying anything? Do you really think it's rude for someone to ask you to buy something or leave? Are you Austinite's so filled with self-entitlement? I understand if you only by something once and stay for 3 hours. If I was there that long I'd probably expect a question myself, but I certainly wouldn't mind replying that I had already purchased something. Even so, I would probably buy something else. Do you think you could just walk into a restaurant and sit at one of their tables and not order anything? Hell no; why do you think you can do it at a coffee shop? Just because coffee shops are "cool"? Get off your high horses, spend $5 on a latte and a tip.
Oh, and the hours are still great.

One star for having easily accessible plugs to plug in my laptop while I was there.
One star for allowing you to keep a tab open, so I didn't feel like an idiot charging my card 3 or 4 times in a few hours.
One star for having the best Mexican Hot Chocolate I have had in, well, EVER.
One star for being 24 hours!
I had a great lazy Sunday afternoon here a couple of weeks ago, so I went back for a little peaceful study time and had the same experience. The atmosphere is so laid back, and made me feel right at home working on my computer or a crochet project. It's nice to know if the urge for some Hot Chocolate strikes me at 3 am, Epoch will always be there for me.
Definitely not for everyone.
The coffee is OK, the pizza can be good if you get it when the dude walks in with the boxes. But 10 hours later they're not so great. But 10 hours later nothing else is open so be grateful you have anything to eat. In the morning the bakery is excellent. As are the sandwiches available for lunch.
The cool part about Epoch is it's hmm, distinctiveness.
Yes, the one dude working there can be quite rude, but it's always for a good reason imo. If you don't tip you should get yelled at (provided someone gave you good service). I've also seen him yell if you leave your dirty dishes on a table when you leave. Now that's just bad manners (to leave your shit). I've found the staff there to be invariably very friendly.
Yep, people outside smoke a lot. I've never smoked, so I stay inside and it's fine.
The furniture is a little old and crappy, and I've seen a couple electrical issues that were both entertaining and alarming.
But, the really cool part about Epoch is that it's open 24 hours and seems to be busy at any random time you could choose to be there. The groups of people can be pretty entertaining and that's the best part about it.
The wifi is military grade A+.
I consider it an Austin landmark.
I'm not sure what it is about this place, but I find myself driving all the way up here at least once every couple of weeks to study or work on my laptop. Maybe it's that it's open all-night long or maybe it's because when I get one of the mismatched tables along the wall, I can sit in one place and work for hours on end.
The coffee is okay, but the feel of the place is what merits my 4-star rating. I really like the music they play and I'm thrilled to find the place nearly bereft of most of the pretentiousness you'll find at other coffee shops in Austin.
Being able to grab a slice of East Side Pie's pizza and a Mexican coke is an added bonus. And now that the weather is getting nice, it's easy to justify sitting on the patio and watching eclectic Austinites come and go.
Unless I move even farther away, I see myself coming back here.
MEXICAN CHOCOLATE MOCHAS ROCK MY WORLD. I mean, that one Mexican chocolate mocha I had did. It was pretty amazing. Definitely better than Starbucks-MickyD's-BK and all of their wanna-be-cool-and-have-good-mexican-chocolate-moch aness combined. Haha. So I basically had one coffee that changed my life forever. Sound too good to be true? Nicky B says. It's not! So pick up your laptop, and drive yo'self down to Epoch and order that iced Mexican chocolate mocha. You can even write your review on yelp while sipping the goodness through that green plastic straw. Know why? They have free Wi-Fi! That's why! Better yet, they're open 24/7. Crazy right!?!?!
Nicky B has found true love & is out :]
This is my favorite place to go study, mainly because it's 24 hours. It's an awesome place to focus until your butt goes numb and it's an awesome place to just hang out too!
Sunday nights get a little crazy since there are so many people there studying and also people catching up on what happened over the weekend. Plus, there is this guy who always works that night and he has the craziest (worst) taste in music ... in addition he is a bitch about tips. And when I say bitch, I mean he will rattle the tip jar if you don't tip him. What's up with that?
Otherwise, the ambiance is generally pretty good and the music isn't too distracting. I recommend the Iced Mojo and the Buscemi Pizza. Yum Yum. :)
The GOOD: Free wifi, open 24hrs
The BAD: very ordinary coffee, hard to find a seating place.
If you have to put on 10 lbs this is definitely the way to do it!
Seriously... when this place opened down the street from me a couple years ago I checked it out & instantly became addicted. The Mexican Mochas & yummy cinnamon rolls had me coming back day after day & I quickly packed on the pounds, but at least I had a great time doing it. Since then I have become a regular, at least once a week, & love that I can walk in know that the guy behind the bar already knows what I want.
Great place to hang out & study, conduct business, catch up with old friends, or just grab a mocha on the way to work. Oh, & they're open 24/7 & have an excellent selection of food for all the veggie people out there.
I would also highly recommend the Iced Mojo... it's like crack in a cup, but much more tasty!
The staff here are assholes. Why would I want to pay $3-5 for mediocre coffee and have some emo clown bare their teeth and look at me like I'm the scum of the earth?
Maybe it's time for Epoch to rethink their business approach and hire more people friendly workers.
It's too bad; I'm a student who has to study, has an infatuation with coffee, and I live literally a block away from Epoch, but they're never going to get my business due to the negativity of the staff and the subpar coffee beverages.
I've never been asked to leave for not buying enough, but then I tip the barrista.
The main con I'd say is that it's too crowded, so I can see why they're trying to move out some campers, but that's a delicate subject.
Another con is that they've switch bagel vendors. They claim that these are more "authentic" so apparently authentic bagels are dinner rolls with a hole in the middle.
