Gratefully found this place on the way back to the hotel, just when I thought I'd have to settle for chain, fast-food.

The interiors are cute - all '50s nostalgia when Detroit had seen better days. I had the Dublin Garden, which was excellent, but for $8.50, thought it could have been bigger (I'm not a big eater and it left me hungry). Thankfully, the jar of fresh pickles provided for free on the table helped out. I finished the small jar. So good.

The service was friendly and it's the type of place people sitting next to you ask you what you got. I'm coming back next time I'm in town.

I used to go to Ephs a lot when it was located on Porter. Loved it and went there at least twice a week. I have only been to the new location two times now. The past two times have been really disappointing.

Today we had ordered carry out from Ephs, my suggestion, and now the troops are really bummed at me. It took a very long time for our order to get done (30 minutes for 3 sandwiches). We had ordered right when they had opened and there was only 1 table in there waiting when we went to pick up. When we did get the sandwiches they were wrapped in deli paper that did not cover the sandwiches. Our sandwiches were all poured together in the bottom of the bag for us to rebuild.

I could have sworn they gave a pickle with the sandwiches, if they do anymore we didn't get those. Two of the three sandwiches were not as described on the menu. Pastrami was cut way to thick.

All & all, the bread is fantastic. The sandwiches themselves, ehhh. After all the aggravation our appetite for the super sandwich went away.

I visited Eph's for the first time a couple weeks back through the Detroit Synergy Dinner Club. My reviews are mixed!

Service- Most of the blame should probably be directed to whoever was in charge of this event from our group where a group of about 20 people congregated. We waited quite awhile before being served and if not for the pickles on each table to tide us over, my hand might have one less finger.

The staff looks young which may contribute to the less than stellar service. I'm not going to call for an investigation but...I do think there are laws dictating the earliest age kids can work, enough said.

We all tasted 4 sandwiches:
Corned beef sandwich was average, sub par to a Steve's Deli or any other upscale deli.

Roast beef was decent- good horseradish sauce, just not enough of it.

There was a veggie sampling which surprisingly was my favorite. Good spinach, brussel sprouts, mix on a healthy eight grain (or similar) bread.

Turkey + veggie sandwich- same as above add turkey.

Overall: The service was sub par, the food was average, the night was so-so. I don't think I'll be making a repeat appearance.

Eph's is a sandwich place on Woodward near Bangkok Crossing, Foran's, and Woodward Coney Island.

***Note: There was a management change since the last time I've been there. This review reflects my pre-management change experiences.

I've eaten sandwiches from there many times, but only dined in twice. If you're dining in, the service can be very slow. Granted I went during lunch hours both times, but there was no excuse for having one waitress service and entire restaurant. When the sandwiches me and my coworkers ordered finally came out, they were good. But the slow service really took away from the experience.  Based on the slow service, I decided it would be best to call ahead for carry out. And that's what I did each time I wanted a sandwich. Calling ahead was nice. My sandwich was always ready when I got there and I didn't have to wait too long to pay.

The sandwiches are reasonably large and they are very tasty. The menu is extensive with numerous kinds of sandwiches that all have Detroit-centric names. If you're downtown looking for a sandwich, I suggest Eph's become your first stop.

1-Star, based totally on the snarky person we met upon entering the building.  Too, bad... after all I'd read I was really looking forward to this... but - No.

We had only walked through the front door and were immediately "put-off" by a snarky staff person behind the counter.  When asked "Do you serve beer?" the indignant response accompanied by a 'head-point' was "She'll take your order."  Ok, so the person we were motioned to address was great she offered any seat in the house - perfect.  I asked what beers they had and she responded "We only serve root beer."

We went next door had a nice beer and a bowl of chili.  The beer wasn't a deal breaker - it was the "snarky" first impression that had me looking elsewhere.

I'll give Eph, another try another day.  Everyone can have a bad day - but first impressions really do matter.

I'm not a huge cold-sandwich eater, but the sandwiches at Eph's make me think otherwise.

The menu is extensive, and a lot are locally named.  My coworker had the Woodward, she liked it, although it was hard to tackle.  I had the corned beef sandwich on toasted pumpernickel (okay, I still had  warm sandwich).  The pickles were huge, and the drinks are cheap.  There are no fries (just bags of Better Made chips) and the sandwiches are HUGE.  You could totally share one.

During the weekday lunch rush, this place gets crowded.  Get there early.

I had the bread pudding here, with the whiskey sauce.  It was so warm and yummy.  I also had a sandwich with salami in it and even though it was cold, it did not disappoint.

The day I was there they fed Barack Obama and he complimented them on their food.  It doesn't get much cooler than that.

Love this place.  Although Farrah Fawcett is a total dumbass, homages to her stapled all over the wall definitely make for better wallpaper than standard crappy wallpaper.  The decorations in this place crack me up, but onto what really makes the place rock.  The sandwiches.

These are some of the best deli sandwiches I've ever had.  I'll put it right up against anything I've had in New York or Zingerman's in Ann Arbor.  It's just a darn good sandwich with all top shelf ingredients.

Eat here.  It'll be one of the best lunches you've had in town.  I even like it slightly more than Russell Street, which is damn good too.

My office orders in a lot, so we had been loyal customers of Eph's for years.  The food does taste great; however, on one occasion two people in the office received salads with flies.  One salad had two large flies, the other salad had one fly.  The management basically said, "don't come back", when one person from the office discreetly returned the salads, pointed out the problem and showed the evidence.  We have been boycotting the establishment ever since.

Eph's is a cool restaurant downtown that has a 50's vibe to it.  Lots of old artifacts on the walls from Detroit's Good 'Ol Days.... The place is more for carry-out, than dining in..with the interior consisting of bar stools and small tables. If you go here, I definitely suggest trying the Bread Pudding... its absolutely amazing and only $4 for a huge serving!!

Absolutely awesome deli sandwiches. The service can be lacking, but it's worth it for the food. They also do catering so order from here for your next office lunch!

If you're looking for a great vegetarian deli and your lunch companion loves meat, look no further. These guys make a great ephing sandwich, meat or no meat. My favorite is the Dublin Garden - that's the vegetarian variety ... and its still so filling you have to roll me out of there afterwards. The other great thing about this place is the jar of fresh dill pickles that they put on the table when you sit down. But beware, the last 2 times I've been - they had replacement pickles that just didn't cut it. On good days, with the good pickles, one could eat themselves into oblivion.

First of all, no review of Eph's is worthy of being posted without mentioning the bread pudding (or spelling the name right).  This place is a diverse deli with offbeat Irish flavor (not the food).  It's one of those places where you can crush an incredible roast beef Detroit sandwich and then crush an Orange Crush right after.  Eph's used to be over in Corktown near Tiger's stadium, but now they are right in the thick of it by Campus Martius.  Service is friendly, food is absolutely top quality for any deli and you aren't likely to spend more than $15, all of which will be worth it.
