I love firsts and today was the first time I entered a consignment shop that had a suited security guard at the door. That's right, not a uniform. A suit.
Anyway this store is set in a lovely space full of natural light. Every item was set out with love unlike most consignment environments where too much junk is crammed on to a rack. Shoes are properly set out. Jewelry is prettily displayed. Dresses aren't crushed, they are given space. Items are mostly organized by designer. Oh and they are having a HUGE sale right now.
I was greeted when I entered and nobody followed me around. I was able to shop in peace. Truth be told I wasn't on a mission for anything special. I was just checking it out and now that I know what they have I might return for a handbag sometime.
I'm reserving the 5th star for when I find that special perfect item.

One person's junk is another person's treasure.
Last month, we spent the weekend in Rancho Santa Fe and the day in La Jolla. While it's popular to schlepp around reusable grocery bags to be more "green", recycling clothes and accessories is not as fashionable an idea. But a visit to the Encore boutique may make one see differently.
One location, soon to be online with a Shopping Cart, Encore offers preworn/ preowned as well as new designer clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry for ladies and gents. I love anything that can be reused/ repurpose. The items I scored were clean, well cared for, and for the most part would have been hard to find: Balenciaga leather boots and Vera Wang mules in size 5 for under $50 a piece; two cashmere sweaters (J-Crew and an unknown designer) for $25 a piece. For our friend, the host, I picked up a new Dolce Gabana men's shirt for $39.
In times when costs matters more than ever, I hope we'll go through our closets for unworn items and donate or cash them into a place like Encore for them to be put to better use. A dollar earned can be a dollar saved.
Oh my gosh! I love this place!!! I wish there were more resale places like this in San Diego, they have a ton in New York. My friend just got a Chanel purse here for 500.00 that was in flawless condition. I got a vintage Louis bag. If you like designer clothing, you should definitely come here, as you are going to pay a fraction of the price. I love designer vintage and I'm into 80's designers at the moment......so this place is perfect for you girls who have the same sense of style!
Oh it is a joy to shop here. This consignment shop is no Buffalo Exchange, because you can find some of the most exquisite designer goods at a semi-reasonable price. Encore sells second hand designer clothes. It is located in La Jolla and the store receives a lot of merchandise from La Jolla's snooty and affluent residents. Even if you can't afford to clothes here, you can have a lot of fun browsing through the vintage designer apparel.
All kinds of noteworthy labels can be found here. I managed to score a Gucci purse for $99. I know that's not cheap, but hey, it goes with everything. I also tried on the cutest Marc Jacobs baby doll dress, but it didn't fit and I already went go-for-broke on the purse.
I consider the store one of La Jolla's best kept secrets.

Are you 65 years old? Do you want a St. John knit suit from the 1980s? Then this store is for you! If you are not, and you don't, then don't bother. This store is BIG and FULL of outdated clothes and absurdly snooty sales people (note to them: you work at a used clothing store, not a 5th Avenue boutique). Can't see this place surviving the recession, so go soon if you want to go at all.
I went here for my moms wedding back in 06 when the White Louis Vuitton Murakami design was in style. They had quite the selection I was younger but I had a credit card and wanted to find something for myself. I went in the set up was nice its ran by older women and they pretty much treated me like I was the scum of the earth. I was followed from rack to rack even to the damn glass counter. Even when I made the purchase of the Louis Vuitton platforms they still followed me right out the door with a pat on my shoulder. If I didnt like there stuff I wouldnt go back but because they have such nice stuff from all the money makers in town I go back. A little hunt of advise ladies treat all your customers equal no matter if there 17 or 70.
This is a 2-story emporium of (mostly women's) designer resale items. The first floor has current season items and the second floor has a sparse but interesting clearance section with prices down to just $10 or so on some items. The first floor is roughly organized by brand with areas for big designers like Chanel (lots of classic suits in impeccable condition), St. John, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and then formalwear, furs, shoes, etc. There is also an excellent handbag counter with recent styles from Chloe, Bottega Venetta, Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc. Be aware that the style tends toward the more mature woman than the of-the-moment 20-something, but there are classic finds for everyone! Definitely a La Jolla gem. Here are a few more pricing examples:
$19 St. John knit skirt (clearance)
$60 Gucci blouse
$218 Dolce & Gabbana winter sweater
$230 Jimmy Choo sandals
$295 Manolo Blahnik stiletto boots (clearance)
$998 Chloe Paddington
So, definitely a range of things from affordable pieces to spendy indulgences.
