additionally emilio's has pretty awesome brunch. i'm generally mildly hungover and not hungry enough for the buffet, but the ala carte suites me just fine. eggs are cooked to perfection, side of bacon is generous, prices aren't bad either. i think i had eggs, toast, bacon, breakfast potatoes (also very tasty), orange juice, and coffee, for about $7-8 bucks.
the location is also awesome, being that it's close to my house and i'm not a huge fan- or really a fan at all- of orange across the street.

i like emilios better than babareeba for sure. the waitstaff is wayyyy friendlier and food better as… Read more »
Meh. I've experienced better at Ba Ba Reeba.
I guess if that's packed, then you can umm ... take a cab to Iberico.
If that's packed, then come back to Emilio's, it'll still be fairly empty, no offence Emilio.
Really a good find for a special occasion. This place is great for tapas and Paella. Paella especially was delicious but pricey. I spent 30 bucks easy before drinks.
The food is well prepared, the waitstaff was more than friendly and very engaging which I always think adds the environment.
The decor is forgettable, but really who cares when you're more into the food and the people around you!
Everything about this place screams good date so consider it for a special occasion
My friend and I wanted to go to Xoco but due to a huge line and crazy hangover hunger, we skipped and went to Emilio's...one of those restaurants that's just meh...not terrible but definitely not good.
Service was a bit spotty, but I will say the beef filet was amazing....too bad everything else wasn't...
I have to disagree with my fellow yelpers here... I did not enjoy my Emilio's tapas dinner at all. The bacon covered dates? Eh... Too oily for me. I did not like it. The paella was too soggy. I don't know... After having dined at Cafe Iberico, no other tapas restaurant has ever come close to comparison (except maybe Cafe Ba Ba Reeba).
It's the HEAVENLY Taste!
The Most Delicious restaurant in Chicago. My boyfriend and I discovered this place in Lincoln Park on a late Friday night when other restaurants were closed.
We order 3 plates to share and ALL of them taste AMAZING and the priced are very good (ranged from $6.99 to $9.99). The three plates are Carne Asado, Shrimps and a plate of juicy chicken sauteed in amazing yellow creamy sauce. I have to explain theme one by one.
Carne Asado: It is very unconventional. I have had a lot of good Carne Asado, but this one is truly different. It's very thin, tender, but not dry at all. As you cut through it, the meat fell slightly apart, but still sticks together. What makes the dish more amazing is the green Minty sauce that normally goes Lamb chops. This is a must-try amazing combination.
The Chicken plate consists of about 6 pieces of tender chicken drumsticks meats (It swear to God it is the most juicy tender chicken I have had in America) dipped in a mysterious yellow sauce that our waitress totally fell in love with it, too. A Must-try!
Seafood bowl: Sauteed shrimps and octopus stired with baked potatoes. A very flavorful dish. Unforgettable experience. The desser, soft chocolate mousse cake was definitely heavenly as well.
The price turn out to be about 20 per person after tip and tax. With such a great flavor and portion, it is amazing!!!
I heard their Sunday Brunch is amazing. Will sure go back real soon!
A 5 start with no doubt!
Been here many times, have always been treated wonderfully! The food is expensive, but fantastic. The service, refreshing! The servers seem to know SO much about what they're serving, from the tapas to the wines to the full dishes. Impressive. Would recommend, great for special occasions!
All the food was forgettable and undewhelming. I also thought for the portions it was twice as expensive as it should be.
It's no accident I hadn't been here in years.
The noteworthy "plus" qualities: for as busy as it was on a Saturday night, the service was attentive and most important, it was not so loud that you cannot hear one another. We had a table for six and no decibel issues, at all.
This place is a real shame. It's got everything going for it . . . except great food. My dining companions were the best, but this review is not about my friends.
The dining room is pleasant with many open windows. The service is fantastic. The Sangria is very good. It's not super loud. The decor is stylish and fun.
The food, however, is overwhelmingly mediocre. Overcooked and overpriced. The paella was really overdone, and . . . mine had a big hair in it *gagging*. So as not to startle my dining companions, I merely plucked out the hair and continued, but urrgghhh.
I might consider going back to give this place a try, but honestly . . . what's the point, when there are so many other great and/or untried restaurants in Chicago? If I'm going out to spend a bundle on food, I want it to be BETTER than what I can make at home.
Sorry, Emilio's. I wanted to love you, but it just didn't work out.
Throughly enjoyed the place again after not being there in years. Service was good, food was tasty, and the sightseeing was hysterical.
Between the Bus boys and the Server we were never alone for long or in need of much. Our food came out at the usual frenzied pace of a Tapas Place but it was timed well so we did not have everything at the same time.
Only complaint... gimme more Goat Cheese. All the other helpings we adequate (if not a little expensive) and satisfied the taste buds.
stopped in at Emilio's last night for a quick happy hour drink on the way to eating at Five Guys burgers. the bartender, ERIN, was SO nice and she made us a very tasty vodka lemonade (with homemade lemonade, not nasty countrytime powder mix!). me and my friend were the only ones sitting at the bar. Erin asks if we want to see the tapas menu, and we like, no we just here for a drink. she then brings us out a free sample of this AMAZING sausage on a crostini that had a little sweet jam/chutney on it. it was SO good and so nice...what a pleasant surprise! i cant remember last time somebody just gave me food for free sitting at a bar!
to add to that, EMILIO himself was in the restaurant and we got to meet him!haha he was a very nice, short, rotund man that looks exactly like an "Emilio." i've been to the other location in Streeterville and it was nothing special, but the service we received at this LP location will keep me coming back for more! THX ERIN!!!
I've been a fan of Emilio's for several years now, but in the last couple months discovered they served Breakfast/Brunch on the weekends. THIS IS AN UNDISCOVERED BREAKFAST GEM IN CHICAGO!
While people lined up in front of the ever mediocre Orange across the street, we sat in the European inspired dinning room, with open windows, feelings the breezes of the Spring. The Sunday Spanish Buffet looked wonderful, but was more than I or my girlfriend wanted to eat so we each ordered an Omelette. Both of ours were among the best we've had: light, fluffy, and packed with flavor. The waitstaff is always very warm, efficient, and courteous...
Like me, I hope you discover this hidden morning gem! I promise you will not regret it.
P.S. Their dinners are fantastic and super flavorful! Highly recommended as well!
How the mighty have fallen...
This used to be a favorite of mine, but they've fallen off so much in the last two years that I will not return. Our final meal at Emilio's went like this:
Arrive, seated by pleasant hostess. Then we are greeted by hurried and nearly non English speaking waiter who pushes the house special 1/2 off wines and runs off. He returns 15 minutes later, frowns at my inquiry about another bottle of wine, walks off to 'check if they have it in stock' and doesn't take the order for our first round of plates. There were 5 tables when we sat down - what was his problem?
I flag down another server and put in our order, at which point our original waiter returns and informs us they don't have the bottle I was interested in. He takes this choice moment to push the house wine special again. I ask him about a different wine, he tells me it's not so good and - guess what - suggests the shiraz on special once more. It felt like they were running a contest to see who could sell that wine. I ordered a beer instead. My date got the wine though, and said it tasted corked. Special added bonus were the multiple fruit flies buzzing our table, one of which ended up in her glass.
Our first round of plates arrived shortly after. Only the dates were memorable. The salt in the red sauce put over the goat cheese rendered it inedible, for shame Emilo - this used to be a great dish. We hadn't seen the waiter for nearly 30 minutes after our first plates, so I walked to the hostess stand and asked for the bill. I don't know how or why this place has gone so far downhill, but we won't be back .
Okay, I have only eaten a few bar plates of food here but they were delicious. What I'm really writing about is the Sangria. They serve real, true, as authentic as it gets, Sangria here.
With that being said, don't drink them on an empty stomach. I've done this mmm... twice I believe and have blacked out after drinking with friends. And yes, one time I actually flipped backwards on the chair (i do not remember this but I have accounts of the moment from friends). After that, we were cut off from the bar. I respect that. My bad; lesson learned.
Anyway, if I had a better idea of what more of their menu were like they'd prob get 5 stars but for now... the 4 stars are for their kick ass sangria. Careful, it sneaks up on you real fast. Ps- the waitstaff are very knowledgable and friendly.
Great location, great setup, nice atmosphere, but the food is so disappointing. And to make things worse, it's too expensive for similar type places.
I guess there may be some occasions where you may want to forgo the food quality for a great atmosphere, and this place is perfect for that. I love tapas, and for Emilio's to catch up with the quality of other tapas places in Chicago it needs a major boost. If they day, that may justify the slightly higher prices.
Went here on a Friday night with friends - no reservation, and not a problem.
Our waiter was probably the nicest person in the entire world. I think his name was Jose. He was completely oozing charm (with some direct flattery thrown in), and he teased us about all the sangria we were drinking. We liked him so much that we wrote "we love Jose" on our receipt. I know. We were drunk. When I came out of the bathroom before we left, I realized I'd left my sweater at the table. As I jogged back to look for it, I bumped into Jose with my sweater draped over his arm! awww, my hero!
Onto the food.... We had two pitchers of white sangria between 3 of us, but honestly each pitcher is not terribly big, so we aren't the lushes you think we are. I thought the sangria was perfectly fine and tasty, but I think I prefer their red sangria, which I had last time.
We had five tapas for three of us, which was just enough.
Patatas Con Alioli - their garlic potato salad. This was very tasty, with huge chunks of potato covered in a very garlicky sauce. Great texture and flavor here.
Albondigas de Cordero - Lamb meatballs in spicy tomato sauce. These were also pretty good, although they didn't really stand out as exceptional. They were pretty basic meatballs, and the sauce wasn't quite plentiful enough.
Vierias Salteadas Salsa Azafran - Scallops with spinach. These were all right - I liked the texture of the tiny scallops, they were cooked well. The "tomato saffron" sauce didn't really taste like tomato saffron to me....it just felt heavy and buttery. I wasn't a huge fan.
Caracoles Emilio - sauteed escargot! This was actually one of the best ones. Don't be afraid now, the texture is a bit odd but the taste was right on.
We also had something that I can't recall the Spanish name of....it was Asparagus with bacon and a creamy cheese. This one wasn't my favorite - the bacon pieces were mostly fatty, and the cheese was thick and clung to the asparagus ends in clumps. somewhat unappealing.
Dessert was insanely good. We had the Crepas Con Crema - vanilla crepes filled with banana custard covered in chocolate sauce. Even better than it sounds, honestly. Such a great flavor. Next time I would even come just for sangria and dessert!
I think they have great service here, and now I'm obsessed with their dessert, but I think generally the tapas are pretty standard, the ingredients don't feel quite as carefully chosen or as fresh as I'd like. There just needs to be more magic with the food. I also think the sangria pitchers are insanely overpriced. I know everything in Chicago is overpriced, but come on now. It's such a small pitcher!

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet!
I agree with previous reviewers that this restaurant is solid, but not mind-blowing. It's a great place to go with a large group, because the tapas menu can handle many different dietary restrictions and budgets.
The 2 noteworthy menu items?
-dates wrapped in bacon
-goat cheese with walnuts, pear, honey, & crostini
Stopped in on Sunday night 8pm, Not busy, so seated right away. Was brought a complimentary appetizer, it was introduced as a chicken salad horshradish on Toast points. They were tastier as described, not hot, very neutral.
I decided on 2 tapas, 1 hot 1 cold. I chose:
POLLO AL CASERÍO
Chicken breast filled with fresh mozzarella cheese and radicchio roasted peppers in a sherry vinaigrette.
This cold dish was excellent. The peppers were succulent and perfectly roasted, red, yellow and orange. The chicken was perfect not a piece of gristle or fat, the mozzarella cheese was tasteless, the vinaigrette was spot on.
and
CAPRICHOS DE PATO
Ravioli filled with duck, shiitake mushrooms, cabrales cheese and spinach, served with mushroom cream sauce.
Deep fried ravioli, bleh, Couldn't really taste too much, the sauce stood out as the best though.
My wife had (2) hot tapas:
CAZUELA DE SETAS AL AMONTILLADO
Sautéed portabello, cremini, shiitake, and oyster mushrooms with garlic and amontillado sherry sauce.
Not sure what the spice was but it was WAY SPICY. I got to eat this because too spicy for wife. I didn't taste sherry.
LOMO DE CERDO AL AJILLO
Pork tenderloin medallions served with tri-colored peppers, garlic potatoes, and white wine garlic sauce
She liked this one, however no peppers to be found, instead were lots of onions. Good, but false advertising.
Overall decent, good not great. Service was fine. No issue there.
Just didn't like the inconsistencies what was written on the menu versus what came out of the kitchen,
May try again, Jury is still out.
I came here on a date and since it was Monday, it was half off the wine selection. We were unsure of which wine to order so our waiter, ever so nicely, came with samples of two different wines that we might like. It was great.
The food, the food. I loved the duck ravioli, it was so good and I also really liked the spanish tortilla, reminded me of quiche. I don't really remember what else we ordered but overall I was impressed, good food and the service was impeccable. They also seated us in a nice private booth. ;-)
I've been to Emelio's many times over the years both the two in the city and even the one in wheaton (now closed), and I think it qualifies as my fave tapas place in the city.
Maybe its just nostalgia but there are certain things that you can't go wrong as far as the taste:
1)Pincho de solomillio - THE BEST - beef grilled, covered in cracked black pepper with candy sweet onions and horseradish cream MMM... one of my all time favorite foods Order a large
2) The Paella - excellent, takes a while to make... tons of food for two, haven't had better
3) The garlic potato salad - holy crap, I could have never imagined potato salad could taste so good, I crave this all the time
Those are my staples, everything else is mostly great. Like all of the tapas places you'll dislike a few dishes and it is a little pricier than say Iberico, but I think the quality is higher overall here and its worth it.
Nothing to write home about, but Emilio's Tapas is a good, solid tapas place. (In between delicious Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba and the not good 1492 Tapas.) They have a nice selection and the service was good.
I will, however, totally come back in the summer when the giant patio is open.
One of my favorite places when I can afford it! I love every bit. The Sangaria is often hit or miss, but with a wealth of great food I can never complain. The service has always been good, no matter what I sometimes dragged myself in looking like. We once had a contest to see if we could finish a glass of water before the bus boys refilled it and just couldn't do it. Ha! Come here and Enjoy!
I love tapas... and while this place wasn't the best, it was fine. We started off the night splitting a pitcher of red wine sangria. Note - Emilio's has different flavors of sangria, which I was not brave enough to try. The red wine was good, though.
Four of us split three tapas: The tomato bread with ham and manchego which was pretty standard and hard to mess up. The shrimp wrapped in bacon - was okay, shrimp was a little overdone. And the chicken and ham croquettes - which were a hit with my 9 year old son. I give it a 'eehh..' For dessert, we opted for the profiteroles which were drowned in chocolate sauce. I'm not a fan of too much chocolate, so I wish they had eased up on it some.
All in all, not a bad place to go. The service was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean and we sat by the window, enjoying the view of Clark and Fullerton.
I am generally not a fan of sharing my food. I do not like a plate delivered that everyone will eat off of. I find myself getting the nervous shakes- "What if someone takes more than their fair share and I don't get enough? " What if I am still hungry and I have to stop at White Castle on the way home so that I don't look like a pig in front of everyone?" "Did Larry wash his hands before he grabbed that bacon wrapped date?" These are the abnormalties that run through my head. I like my food, I do not want to share it with you- unless perhaps you just want a bite. A very small bite.
I thought I would hate Emilio's simply because of the fact that Tapas are meant to share. I'm a food whore- I want my own thanks. Despite this huge flaw- the food was superbly delectable. Odd- yes, in fact so odd some of the dishes didn't even seem Spanish inspired. Don't take me as like the guru on Spanish food, though cuz this would be my first encounter with Spanish cusine.
The staff is awesome- but I am biased. I used to work for a dating service in Chicago that used them frequently to set up dates. Therefore, I am guaranteed a good table whenever I introduce myself to the host.
This is definately a fun place to go with a group- not necessarily a date. It's just a busy, fun atmosphere and you can all share lovely, odd creations and FABULOUS sangria- provided your friend Larry washes his hands and doesn't devour the jug-o-wine.
3 words: bacon, wrapped, dates
OMG!!
The spanish gratin (which I've already forgotten the name) A-mazing. In fact, everything was amazingly good.
However, this loses a star just shy of perfection due to service. I realize the servers might've been dissuaded from interrupting my cousin and I (we were catching up after several months). Other than that, their suggestions were great, very descriptive and very friendly.
Even though there could be a wait involved, I would suggest coming during a slightly busier time (Fri-Sun; I came on a Wed. night) to get a bit more attention and more ambiance.
Yes I had better tapas and service elsewhere.
The spiced potatoes were ok, bacon-dates were fine. The paella took more than 30 minutes to make and they sure took their sweet time to bring it to our table.
The calamari and poultry are kind of small and hardly anything to write about. You think with the prices they have set up here they could at least pay a little more attention with the service there weren't that many people in the restaurant (this is on a weekend at that)
I agree with another reviewer, the Sangria was bland.
I've only been to Emilio's for brunch, but I'm sure the dinner is just as good! It's a fabulous place to go for brunch for a few reasons. The first is that it is not too crowded, which means you don't have to wait for a table. Then, there's the price. If you're really hungry you can get the buffet which includes a separate entree. We always opt out of the buffet only because it seems like too much food. The entrees are the perfect amount of food. You'll leave feel satisfied, but not overly stuffed. The staff is very friendly and the service is pretty quick. The only negative aspect is that they really try to sell you the buffet, which is annoying. Don't get me wrong, the buffet looks great, but it's just too much food for me.
Wonderful menu full of delicious food. Every time my friends and I go here we like to try something new, and the wonderful waitstaff are always willing to make yummy recommendations.
The sangrias are wonderful!
Try the Datiles con Tocino (dates wrapped in bacon in a roasted red pepper sauce.) Delicious!
Hmmmmmmmmmm. . . .
I've looked at their menu online and have been delving into the depths of my memory banks. Then I asked my bf if he remembered anything special and the perfect words came out of his mouth' "uneventful".
There are definetly better tapas places for the price
:( :(
I spent the day at the zoo in Lincoln Park one weekend, and by the end of the day, we were hungry! After throwing out a bunch of places that were too far to walk, my friend suggested a tapas bar called Emilio's. Since it was really close (about a 5 min walk), we decided to give it a try. However, if you're like me, then you have a high standard of tapas because you've been to Cafe Iberico. But I decided to try and keep an open mind.
The space is very nice, great Spanish feel, and very friendly service. It was early Sunday, so it wasn't very crowded, but its not a stretch to imagine Emilio's on a Friday or Saturday night filled with people eating, drinking, and having a good time. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they have 5 different types of sangria: red, white, strawberry, mango, and peach. We ordered a pitcher of the peach, but it wasn't worth the price (28 dollars). There was enough for all of us to have maybe a glass and a half, and it was really very weak.
However, the food was GREAT! It came out quick (again, early Sunday), and we didn't waste any time getting to it. Here's what we had:
**Vegetarian options**
(from the cold menu)
BERENJENAS BRASEADAS: Grilled eggplant stuffed with goat cheese, topped with tomato basil vinaigrette and arugula
QUESO DE CABRA CON NÚECES
Goat cheese rolled in roasted caramelized pecans, served with fresh pear, toast points & grapes
(from the Hot menu)
PATATAS BRAVAS
Spanish style spicy potatoes
***non-vegetarian dishes***
(from the Hot menu)
CARACOLES EMILIO
Sautéed escargot served on croutons with tomato sauce and alioli
CALAMARES CON AJO Y LIMÓN
Grilled calamari with garlic, lemon, and extra virgin olive oil
DÁTILES CON TOCINO
Dates wrapped in bacon, served with roasted red pepper butter sauce
-------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
Like I said, it all tasted great. I especially enjoyed the squid, escargot, and the patatas bravas. I don't know how, but we had room for dessert! Again, it was all great, and here's what we had:
FLAN AL CARAMELO
Spanish custard with caramel sauce
CREPAS CON CREMA
Vanilla creped filled with banana custard served with bittersweet chocolate sauce
and caramelized bananas
**this is a HUGE serving!**
CREMA CATALANA
Spanish custard with chocolate and caramelized sugar topping
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------
So all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and my party of four ended up paying around 30 bucks each (including tax and tip). I wouldn't say it compares to the fun atmosphere of Cafe Iberico, but if you live in Lincoln Park, or are in the area, its a great place for some good food!
I was pretty excited to go to a tapas place and I'd heard great things about Emilio's. When we got there it was super busy which I don't really like, but it also might say something about the place. Like Lots of people wanted to eat there so it MUST be good, right?
Well I can't remember exactly the things we ordered, but one was a chicken dish that was supposed to be warm and was luke-cold at best. We ordered a couple of other things as well and nothing was really all that great. We had some shrimp, and a crab cake type dish as well. The shrimp was pretty good since it was made to be cold, but I gotta say the rest of it was just so-so.
When we got the bill I almost had a heart attack. This place is MASSIVELY expensive for what it is. Nice place, alright food, HUGE price tag. That pretty much turned me off for life right there."
I can't believe I have snubbed Emilio's for so many years. We had a great bottle of red wine, and the most adorable server. We tried a few dishes that make my mouth water just thinking about them! The two I can remember were:
QUESO DE CABRA AL HORNO
Baked goat cheese with tomato sauce and olives, served with garlic bread
CROQUETAS DE POLLO Y JAMÓN
Chicken and serrano ham croquettes, served with tomato basil sauce
Delicious! I would go back to Emilios any day.
Emilios definitely surprised me. Inside, it is very fancy, but the prices aren't too bad for the immense amount of tapas.
There are so many different flavors and varieties of vegan, vegetarian, seafood, etc. selections.
I would suggest anything they have on special, like salmon wrapped in philo dough, or the scallops, shrimp, and squid dish...almost tasted like it should be on an Indian menu.
The service was great and the food comes out pretty quickly.
The drinks selection is normal for a tapas bar.
I will come back here again, def!
Definitely not any place to rave about. I love tapas and wanted to find a place better than Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba since I wasn't a huge fan of it. Well, I will have to say it is way more expensive than Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba and not any better.
The baked goat cheese was okay and the paella campesina lacked flavor. I think the only thing I liked was the patatas bravas.
Definitely would keep on looking if you're really into spanish tapas, especially if you've had paella in Barcelona. It will disappoint.
My favorite tapas place. The decor has slid over the years, but it is still more
elegant feeling than Cafe Babareba or Iberico. The food has always been amazing. Service is prompt and unintrusive. The sherry selection is top notch and the servers are knowledgeable. They always have a great selection of tried and true favorites and new items. Classic favorites include their signature garlic potatoes, gambas a la plancha, and crema catalana.
The food at Emilio's is decent. Highlights were the bacon wrapped dates, the goat cheese & tomato concoction, and the multiple pitchers of sangria.
There were a few disappointments, though, including a couple of dishes that came highly recommended from our overly chatty server. The main ingredients in both the duck ravioli and the stuffed mussels special were unrecognizable, unfortunately.
For the price, I think I'll look elsewhere the next time I want tapas.
I'd like to give Emilios 31/2 stars...
The tapas were fine, if a little bland, but everything was just a little overpriced, even for a tapas place in Lincoln Park.
This is our second time at Emilio's. Went there at 9:00 PM on a Monday night. Place was empty. Must be the economy because this place is consistently great.
Both times we have gone there we take a unique approach. We ask the server (this time it was Amber :*), to pick out some of their favorites and just keep on bringin' them until we say STOP. This has worked to perfection. Plus the server loves picking out the stuff they love, and if it is that good, we would likely love it, too and give them some huge tip!
This means I cannot tell you exactly what the dishes were called since we never cracked the menu. We had some mozzarella rolled over sun dried tomatoes and black olives. We had a tuna thing. We had something with scallops, and calamari. We had a mushroom thing. All very good and none were a dud.
Plus, Monday is 1/2 price wine (bottle) night, so we got lucky. Our wine was Marques de Riscal, Rioja, 2000. Normally $80. We got it for $40.
I love going to a place like this that is always a winner, where we have fun with the server and the tastes of these tapas are all so vibrant and exciting.
"Meh. I've experienced better" pretty much sums it up for me.
The choices are very similar to Ba-ba-reeba, but it's just not as good. And maybe I'm biased because of my love for Ba-ba-reeba. It is pricier too and I don't like the atmosphere as much.
Sorry for making this more of a comparison, but that's how I feel.
one of the better tapas joints i've been to. sometimes difficult to get seated and the wine selection (when i went) was over priced.
but the service overall is great and the food is also pretty good. def good to try it out.
