5408 Queens Chapel RdThere's a sign on the front door at Emerita's that says "PUPUSAS LOCAS." Crazy pupusas? I had to look it up and find out that pupusas locas are just really big (plate-sized) pupusas. Met with my husband after work to see what it's all about.
Well, for one thing, I didn't see pupusas locas on the menu, but I bet they would have made me one if I asked. There was a whole lot of other stuff on the menu, though--Tex-Mex and Salvadoran dishes at very reasonable prices. Our waitress didn't happen to speak English (though some of the other staff does) and we got to test our Spanish skills when we ordered our food. I consider this a plus. Also a plus is the availability of horchata ("con hielo?" means "with ice?" and I was ashamed that I did not remember the word "hielo").
The (regular old cheese) pupusas were great, rounded out with a well-balanced helping of yuca con chicharrones and all the fixins. Too much greasy goodness for us to finish. Guess we'll have to come back and try something different! Maybe I'll go for the pupusa loca after all.
