While I was in Santa Monica for three days recently, I stayed at a lovely apartment at the Embassy Hotel Apartments.

The place is terrific... yet somewhat dated ... with its old-style elevator that barely fits two people and some luggage.  Yet there is some inviting charm that takes you back to a lost era.  I liked it a lot. I also liked that it was just a few blocks from great restaurants, shopping and Pinkberry and only a couple of blocks from the beach.

And I was very happy that the manager did not charge me for the two nights I missed since I was called back to the Bay Area suddenly. He was very accommodating and understanding. I look forward to going back to So Cal, and next time, I will take my daughter with me to safely collect some sea shells at the sea shore.

This place is just beautiful. From the manicured gardens to the old world charm.

I have to tell you, we went here to get away (second honeymoon) and honestly we couldn't have picked a better place to spend the week.

The rooms are clean and cozy, the staff is super kind.  We had a full kitchen, sofa and a great vanity area.  Girls pull out your makeup and enjoy.  It's so much fun to have your own vanity.

Although the rooms are not full eqquiped with iron or board a quick call to house keeping and they'll bring it in a jiffy.

The location is so ideal.  As city people we rarely use a car and so we practiced the same in Santa Monica.  We found transit to be efficent and clean and oh so cheap!

It's walking distance to great eateries and shopping from 3rd street to Montana.

PS: I checked out some of the other "hot" hotels we were interested in; Viceroy, shutters, lowes, hilton and the huntly this place was great hands down.

Old world charm & grandeur.

This three-story hotel is a historic gem in Santa Monica.  It's ideally located two blocks from the Third Street Promenade and the beach.  The 1927 hotel has wonderful Moroccan-inspired charms: dark carved and painted wood beams overhead,  colorful tile work in the main lobby, lots of iron lighting fixtures with amber glows, and two small garden areas:  a mosaic table/bench in front and a patio out back, complete with tranquil water fountain, "painted" tiles, and both have lush Mediterranean plants.

I stayed in one of their corner studios on the first floor.  Although there were flutters of exterior noises, all was forgotten when I saw how spacious and high those ceilings are, with big ol' arch windows that let in the afternoon breezes.  No air conditioning but you should be fine without it.

My big ol' room also came with a full kitchen & eating area, modest in size but very clean.  The vanity and bathroom also have old world charm too-honey combed tiled floors, claw footed tub, and a separate vanity to primp yourself.  I loved it!  Price-wise, it's a bit more than I'd normally pay but the rich historic atmosphere, location and friendliness of the staff were well worth it.

On Saturday mornings , there's a farmer's market on Third and Arizona filled with fruits, veggies, and all sorts of locally produced goods.  It's great this area has a variety of experiences for everyone.

If you want experience a bit of elegance, come here.  I'll stay again when my travels bring me to Santa Monica!

This place is so awesome and in a PRIME location.

We normally stay at the Ambrose, but it was booked. Went onto Trip Advisor and found the Embassy. The gardens and lobby are absolutely gorgeous. We were bumped up to a larger room (nice!) because they were out of the one bedroom suite we had originally booked (@ $259). We were shown to a GIGANTIC two bedroom two bath two story "room". It was bigger than my house at home! Charming architectural details were everywhere.  Most rooms here have FULL KITCHENS!

Now this hotel is not a 5 star hotel, so if you seek room service, a business center, an iPod docking station, brand new starched linens and sleek fancy furniture...do not stay here. However, if you are looking for a prime location, beat up comfy furniture (like a velvet couch!), great welcoming staff and lots of old school character, this is the spot for you!

4 stars instead of 5 because it can be very tough to find street parking in this area (they do provide a street parking permit), the rooms do not include a full sized ironing board (they do have those little table top kind though) and it is tough to regulate the heat through the steam heat radiators. Also, they do offer free internet, but it's not wireless so you are chained to a desk.

I loved this hotel so much. I got there expecting a nice little room - instead I got a HUGE suite with a full kitchen. The location is fantastic - walking distance to the water, shopping, restaurants. This was the only place I've stayed in California that had absolute old-school Hollywood charm -- the architecture, the (somewhat faded glory ) lobby, a beautiful garden. It's like stepping into a Bogart film. And the service was absolutely lovely.

I got a great deal from the http://LA.com travel site. I couldn't believe what a great value this was. Don't stay at a normal hotel - this place is so charming and lovely, you'll want to stay for ages. If I find myself in Santa Monica again, I'll stay here in a heartbeat.

This vintage landmark building oozes charm.  There are courtyards, front and back.  I heard a guest refer to the quaint apartments, which rent by the week or month, as the 'lap of luxury'.  Located a couple blocks from the ocean & a couple blocks from the shopping/nightlife of the Third Street Promenade.  Expensive, yes.

The Embassy is an apartment hotel with a great location and plenty of old world charm, together with a few minor things that can go along with that (i.e. a funky elevator and unreliable water temperature in the shower). But, the rooms are huge and clean and the kitchen is very handy. The living room has a good foldout bed which my 18 year old daughter slept in quite comfortably. We recommend it heartily. But, attend to the parking. I was told twice that the city lot was just one block away--it's three long LA blocks away and, without a map, hard to find.  Because I am disabled, this was a problem. Be sure to get the map for it, but much better, use the lot across the street which you can rent for $10 a day--a very good deal. Ask for that because, even though I hobbled in with a cain, they didn't tell me of this option until I complained. This hotel is a great option: just mind the parking.
