One of the locals gave us the heads up on this place. We were happy with the service, the food and the little extra. After realizing we had left a little something behind a few hours after we left. My husband went back and they had our item in the safe. Thank you for being honest Ellen's :) When back in Buellton we will be stopping in.

We stopped in since since we saw a lot of locals and visitors in the parking lot. There was a line stacked at the door so we started to think we made the right choice. After putting our name down we were told "it'll be 10 minutes"...SO after waiting 30 minutes and seeing people being seated who came after us we inquired about our table. This is why they only get 2 stars, the hostess proceeded to snarl at us with a terrible sour face and rude tone of voice and told us we needed to wait. We asked her to check the list and she accidentally crossed off our name, she then proceeded to again seat someone ahead of us and got us a table. She needs a lesson in guest care.
Otherwise the food was fantastic. My coffee cup was always topped off nice and HOT. We had the ham steak and biscuits n gravy eggs and hashbrowns cooked to perfection. Great home cooking, friendly helpful servers and great accommodating waitress'. Try their tasty homemade raspberry jam IMO was delicious.
The hostess needs to remember first impressions and empathy are her responsibilities. -

Possibly one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. The Danish style pancakes with bluberries were lite and flavorful, must have. The scrabbled eggs with american sausage links which were awesome and came with the BEST hashbrowns I've ever had!!! Order the biscuit and have it with whipped butter and the jam, wow!!! Also came with gravy for no additional charge.
This is a must stop when in the area. As I continued north on the 101, I could not stop thinking how much I enjoyed the meal and can't wait to have in again.
FYI, for people stating in the reviews that its over priced, they are HIGH! My girl and I shared two entries, coffee, ate like kings for $20 n change. -

I would have given this place 5 stars had it been cleaner. We sat at the counter where you could see everything that goes on. Once we received our food, which was served quickly I forgot about the rest. The pancakes are giant size, the bacon thick as well as plentiful, the eggs had a freshness about them. The service and attitude was fantastic.

Fabulous spot for breakfast. Service is friendly and the food is top-notch and homemade. The Danish pancakes are a not-to-be-missed treat (even if you order a side of them to share ... it's worth every calorie and every last bite).
Daily specials are always a delight. The ham is not your traditional thinly sliced and grilled breakfast specialty. It is a nice, bone-in ham hock that is simply succulent, juicy and DELISH! Whatever you do ... DO NOT MISS the wild berry preserves that are on every table.
When you think you can't shove another bite into your mouth, just smear a bit of that homemade berry concoction on a corner your whole grain toast ... savor every morsel. It simply melts in your mouth. -
Review from Ken K.
Well, I went to Ellen's expecting her to sway my allegiance from Paula, but she failed to do so.
Ellen's Danish pancakes were lighter and crispier than Paula's... basically more crepe-like. Is that a good thing or bad thing? Well, when I eat pancakes, I like to know I'm eating pancakes. It needs to have some density, but these pancakes didn't. And it didn't quite deliver taste-wise either.
The whipped cream was light and good, but there was just too much of it. The blueberries were okay, but I think I could have done without.
I did enjoy my extra crispy hash browns though. I think I'll order hash browns this way from now on.
I'm not saying it was bad here. I'm simply stating that my preference for Danish pancakes is still Paula's. -

Hermosa Beach, CA
Wow. This place is pretty lame.
The coffee was lukewarm.
I ordered pancakes dry (butter etc on the side) they came smothered in sugar and butter. The waitress apologized and came back with the same plate but with sugar all over her apron and all around the rim of the plate and edges of the pancakes. She clearly took a damp rag and wiped everything off and then returned the plate to me. Gross. I didn't eat them. She did take them off the bill, however. She explained that she didn't want to ask to the cooks to remake them because they were too busy cooking to cook new ones. I'm still not sure what that means?
The rest of the food was mediocre. I make better eggs and bacon at home. The biscuits and gravy were blah.
Oh, and we were the thinnest people in the joint. This is obviously a place for very large eaters with basic interests in food. -

The reason I rated this fine establishment 5 stars is for the following reasons:
- The Fresh Strawberry Dutch Pancakes - Amazing! Light! Fresh!
- Outstanding service. Even with a wait, we were seated promptly
- Biscuits & Gravy are delicious made with chicken stock
- Everything we ordered, we enjoyed.
We will return many times!!! -

We walked in with a group of 10 people, waited a few minutes, and were asked to sit at two separate tables across the restaurant. I went to the restroom while the rest of the party was seated and I noticed there was a HUGE table with plenty of room for us near the back of the restaurant and all they had to do was clear it for us to be seated there. I noticed that they didn't clear that table the entire time we were there.
The service was quite slow. I never got my OJ and it took several minutes to get coffee and place an order. And, no, they didn't seem overstaffed.
HORRIBLE biscuits and gravy. It was simply: flour, milk, BACON BITS (instead of sausage? Hello?) Major gross. Biscuits dry. If they had asked how our food was at any point, I would have ordered something else. My husband's pancakes were good and the sausage served on the side was delicious.
Once again, I make the mistake of ordering something other than the specialty. My new rule: order fish at the fish restaurant, order steak at the steak house, order Danish pancakes at the Danish pancake place. -

Love Ellen's! Came here as a kid when my grandparents lived in the area. Was driving past Buellton and thought why not stop? So very glad I did. Tracey, my waitress, was so nice. I had a delicious meal. The french toast, eggs and bacon were as good as I remembered. Seriously, you cannot go wrong with Ellen's. If you like breakfast, you'll love this wonderful small town spot.

This is what I call comfort food, and I am not even Danish!!!
Here, I ordered the Kielbasa Breakfast, and subbed my toast for 1 Danish Pancake just so I could get the overall feeling of the restaurant, and that is just what I got! I enjoyed every single bite of my breakfast, and was utterly disappointed that I was unable to finish everything.
To all my fellow LADIES, who love pancakes for breakfast and find themselves afraid to order them because of all the starchy carbs- Danish Pancakes are perfect for you!!!! They give you the same taste as a pancake, just thin and airy like a crepe. My friend ordered regular pancakes tho, and they were just as yummy-light, fluffy, golden brown and just the right sweet.
The hashbrowns were AMAZING! The top layer had a perfect crunch, and the insides were light and fluffy! I was satisfied all the way around with my breakfast. So much so, I made an effort to drive over to Slovang, and walk down HHWY 246 to do a bit of sightseeing just to keep myself from going back to the Hotel room for a nice comfortable nap ;-) -

I have had lunch here many times, and it is always a wonderful time. My favorite is the club sandwich. It is huge and I always find myself splitting it with some one! This little home town cafe has great burgers too! Come on in and have a very nice lunch! (or breakfast if you like)

I made sure to try the danish pancakes here since they are named for them. It was the first time I tried danish pancakes, and I definitely prefer regular pancakes. The danish pancakes are basically like crepes, and I prefer pancakes to be big and fluffy. I had the pancakes with chocolate chips, and they were pretty good, but they weren't anything special.
I'm curious as to whether their regular pancakes are any good. -

Most people don't know about Ellen's because it's in Buellton, but it's only a five minute drive from Solvang and it's a place you must try.
Their Danish pancakes are the best I have had. Even better than Paula's Pancake House. I got the pancakes with a danish sausage. That was quite tasty too.
The service was okay, but the prices were great. I had a fabulous breakfast and coffee all for about $10.
So go to Ellen's. Go now. -

This could 6 stars, easily. Just about the best breakfast I've ever eaten in my life.
Coming to SBC wine country for a two night stay, I forced my bf to eschew the free hotel breakfast buffet in favor of not one, but both highly recommended area Danish pancake houses. I couldn't just pick one (what if I picked the wrong one???) So we hit Ellen's on morning #1 and Pamela's on day #2.
I got the same thing at both places- Danish Pancake Combo. Danish pancakes, 2 eggs, and a side of hash browns.
So maybe you aren't that into pancakes. Me neither, truthfully I almost never order them. But Danish pancakes are worth trying even if you don't really like pancakes, because they're so different. If you were one of those lazy-brained people who likes to find ready-made labels to categorize new things, you might say "What's the big deal. It's a crepe."
But it's not a crepe, no no no. Crepes have a spongier texture with a kinda eggy flavor and I actually prefer the danish pancake which is fluffier and cakey-er to the french breakfast crepe. If anything, it's a pancake-crepe hybrid. Point is, you need to see for yourself why it is so vastly superior to the American style pancake.
Anyway, the pancakes were lip-smacking good, buttery in flavor but light and fluffy and not a big ball of mush in your mouth cos they're so thin.
And the jam. Heaven almighty, the jam! Homemade raspberry jam ("preserves?") on the table that I wanted to pour all over my body and then lick off like a cat. The most delicious jam I've ever tasted! Neither a jam nor pancake person, there I was smearing copious amounts of jam on pancakes and having mouthgasms. On the way out I asked if they sold jars of their crackberry jam and was told "We get asked that a lot, but no, sorry, we don't."
If that wasn't enough superlatives for ya, I think they served the best hashbrowns I've ever had in my life, no joke. I was wondering while I scarfed them down what made them so damn tasty and I think there's a hell of a lot of butter in them taters. Oh well, if you're on vaca it's a go...
Went to Pamela's the next day (review pending) and Ellen's was the CLEAR winner. Pamela's has more of the theme going on, with waitresses in little dutch outfits, but the food is not as good. The pancakes not as heavenly and the jam they serve doesn't deserve to be on the plate at all.
Ellen's isn't about ambiance, unless, like me, you'd rather break bread with locals than tourists. When we were waiting outside for a table to open, we must've been making mighty pathetic eyes at the satisfied customers coming out the door. One townie customer smiled at us and said "Sorry! They're out of food!" and we giggled. Three minutes later another townie customer came out and said to us "They ran of food! We ate it all! Too bad for you!". That's about as cute as redundancy gets.Listed in: Five Stars, SB Style

Pismo Beach, CA
This place was a HUGE let down.
*PS, if you write a bad review that's honest, watch out for the owners son Kevin O, who apparently thinks it's okay to bully people with rude "compliments" on their profile. Feel free to look at mine to see what he wrote to me about this review. Because you know name calling and harassment really makes me want to eat at your place again! **
We were seated right away in a corner table, and then totally ignored for 15 mins before someone bothered to get my mom coffee and asked what I wanted, which was hot tea.
There were no less than 5 waitresses working and no one came over to ask if we wanted anything to drink for that long. They kept avoiding eye contact and walking by.
Then I had 3 different people ask me if I wanted something to drink after my mom got her coffee, and all of them walked away, and I hear one waitress admonish the others for not getting my tea, so FINALLY one of them brought it to me.
Then we waited and waited some more for another 15 mins to be able to order our food.
My mom ordered biscuits and gravy, which the menu claims comes with sausage gravy. It came with disgusting chicken gravy that had NO sausage or bacon in it AT ALL.
My sausage links were okay, but not anything amazing.
The eggs were totally those eggs from a carton, the hash browns were mushy.
The toast was barely toasted, and we were given our food and then ignored some more. The waitress never ever bothered to ask how the food was.
There was no jams or jellies offered to go with the toast and my mom got 1 refill on her coffee. The food is served on plastic plates like those kind you get in a cafeteria. There's one kind of jam on the table, in a jar, that others have mentioned is completely unsanitary. It's not even labeled to tell you what kind of jam you would be eating anyways, which seems pretty ridiculous in this day and age.
The service here completely and totally sucks. This place is over-hyped and the food is not homemade at all. Denny's or IHOP has better food than this place does. At least at those places I get good waitresses that don't totally ignore me and my mom!
This place is just riding the coat tails of what it must have been when Ellen owned it, and now it's just a sucky restaurant that serves food that's all from Sysco. We even saw the delivery truck dropping off stuff in the parking lot. I have no problem with Sysco food if the cook actually does their job and gives the food flavor. Instead, the cook here leaves everything as is and it's totally bland and tasteless.
On the plus side, the food was hot when we got it, but that was pretty much the only positive.
The place is dingy and dirty and looks like it needs to be deep cleaned and repainted. The wait staff don't care if you get good service or not, and everything is cheap.
We are never eating here again because it's disgusting food and the worst service I've had at a restaurant ever. Apparently the only people they care about are the few locals they were fawning all over while ignoring the rest of us. It was so bad that if we hadn't ordered drinks already, my mom and I would have gotten up and left to go across the street to Mother Hubbards where they actually know the meaning of service. This place is horrible! Avoid avoid avoid. -

I was really looking forward to try this place out but was completely grossed out when i saw what one of the waitress was doing!!
Got here around 3pm on Thursday and was excited to eat some pancakes. Walked in and was waiting for about 5 mins to get seated even tho there was only 2 other tables occupied. I was standing near the kitchen trying to get someones attention, when i witness the most disturbing thing !!!!! I caught the waitress scrapping frosting or jam with a spatula and licked it and put it back into the bowl and continue to clean the bowl out!!!!! I'm pretty sure a lot of people do that at home but not at a restaurant!
I knew I couldn't eat there anymore.. I turn around told my bf that we are leaving NOW. After reading soooo many positive food reviews for Ellen's it anger's me to give this a 1 star experience. To the waitress that licked the spatula - just because you think no one is watching .. trust me someone is!Listed in: Solvange

SIDEWAYS WEEKEND: STOP #7
What a way to end a weekend of wine tasting! Breakfast in this homey place is served all day so no worries if one of your friends is having trouble waking up after a long night.
My breakfast here was fantastic with fluffy buttermilk biscuits, rich sausage & sage gravy, smoky thick-cut bacon, and some of the best hash browns I've ever had. Add a few cups of coffee, friendly service and you can see why the parking lot outside is full.
I wish I could transport this place to LA. -

My family and I love Ellen's. Even when we stay in Solvang, we will make the extra effort to go to Buellton to eat there. I think that's a plus too, it's kind of out of the way from the touristy area but not too far either. But I digress...
We've never tried their lunch or dinner offerings but how can you when they serve breakfast ALL day!?
I love waffles, pancakes, crepes--you know, the bad carb stuff--but when I tried a DANISH pancake. Well...THAT was a little bit of heaven right there. It has the airiness and lightness of a crepe, but the fluffiness and substance of a regular pancake (but not too much). You just can't go wrong! I've had their strawberry version (which is awesome because it has *real* strawberries, not the fake syrupy stuff) and their plain ol' butter and powdered sugar kind (also great).
And if you like bacon, you have to get their bacon. OMG! I've never (never) seen bacon as thick and meaty (hardly any fat, which I like) as theirs. The coffee has always been good to me, but I like my coffee medium not harsh or strong like some people. The eggs are nothing to write home about, I mean, they *are* eggs after all...whoo. The biscuit and gravy taste good to me, but are too heavy to eat all by myself so I'm forced to quickly stab some away from my husband. And since I tend to eat the same thing every time I go (hey, if it ain't broke, why fix it?), I can't give much more information. But I can tell you it's a great place to eat, prices are reasonable, the service has been good the times we've been there, and sometimes you may have to wait for a table (not more that 15-20 minutes at most).
Damn! Now, I started to think about their yummy Danish pancakes. Ugh. -
Review from liezl e.
I didn't think too much of the menu. It looked like standard breakfast fare, but on the recommendation of the nice waitress, I tried the Danish Pancakes stuffed with apple sauce, topped with a bit of whip cream. I didn't think too much of it when I saw it, but when I stuffed that first piece in my mouth It was magical... it's like a thicker larger crepe, stuffed with deliciousness.
I ordered it with a side of 2 scrambled eggs, hash browns extra crispy, and an english muffin. Pretty ordinary looking, but on the table sits the kicker that makes this meal special... homemade boysenberry jam! I don't normally finish my food but I might as well have licked the plate clean like a starving hobo.
Super friendly service. Delicious food. Breakfast all day. Boysenberry jam! -

Breakfast done right. If you've never had Danish Pancakes, you simply must try them - lighter, thinner, and with slightly crispy edges. Sort of cross between a crepe and American pancakes. If it's strawberry season, try the strawberry pancakes. Layers of strawberries between pancakes, then smothered with whipped cream. A child's dream breakfast, I grew up eating these on our periodic Sunday breakfasts at Ellen's. And unlike IHOP and Denny's, they are FRESH strawberries not that syrupy fruit compote or frozen berries.
The other breakfast entrees are delicious too, but trust me on the Danish Pancakes.Listed in: Santa Ynez Valley

A girlfriend and I stopped here on a road trip and what a gem!
Really friendly locals joint with HUGE portions, friendly and fast service and really damn good food. I had the Danish pancakes (thin crepe style) with ham, and there was enough ham on these enormous pancakes to feed three people. Eggs are moist and fluffy. Coffee is decent... and they offer lunch dishes as well. I saw guys chowing on huge plates of fried chicken, big ol sandwiches.. it all looked great. Makes me wanna go back just to try lunch sometime.
Do yourself a favor and pop off the freeway (just a short drive) and eat here. You'll love it. -

Mmm, yeah. Classic diner/hole-in-the-wall food at classic prices. It's always packed on weekend mornings with bellies hungry for brunch, but the wait is never more than 10 or 15 at worst. The biscuits and gravy are fluffy, thick biscuit halves smothered with white sausage gravy...my mom's favorite, if she's not ordering the veggie omelet. I like anything with hash browns because they brown them on both sides, and what's the point of hash browns if they're not as bad for you as possible?
My brother-in-law once got the 12-egg omelet. It's huge. He ate it all, but he's also crazy.
Look for the tall, redheaded waitress. She's been there forever, and she's just about the best and friendliest person to ever slog a pot of decaf, so say hi.Listed in: The Danish Capital of the…

I've been here exactly twice. And both times it's been hungover the morning after my company's Christmas party.
Ellen makes some mean pancakes. I didn't get the Danish kind, but the regular ones were damn tasty. Bacon? Check. Biscuits and gravy? Check. Greasy potatoes? Check. That's all I need. I'm not judging for culinary skill, I just needed some home cookin' stat. -

Some of the best finds are the random ones. On the outside, this is a perfectly unassuming breakfast stop, but inside lie some of the greasiest crispy hash browns and tastiest pancakes I've ever had. I'm too much of a traditionalist (3x3x3 for me!) to venture away from my savory bfast plates, so my bf ordered the namesake Danish pancakes. We were both impressed at how well the Danish sausages and danish pancakes pair up, like the Danish answer to pigs in a blanket.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone that loves breakfast as much as I do. -

Skip away from the tourist spots in Solvang and try where the locals eat because they eat here for very good reason! My wife and I found this place on Yelp and a huge thank you to you other Yelpers! We've been back several times and will regularly eat here when in the area.
The Danish pancakes far surpass the other's we had in Solvang. Definitely try them with the fabulous raspberry preserves on your table. The hashbrowns here are the real deal! Crisp and delicous outside and wonderfully cooked fresh potato on the inside. Portions are large so bring your appetite!
Staff is very friendly. Our favorite is the redheaded waitress. Everyone seems to know everyone coming in so they do a lot of catching up but that doesn't hinder the great service, it just gives it a down home atmosphere and makes it feel very cozy. -

Ellen's is by far the best Pancake house I have ever been to.
Their danish pancakes are so good. They're light and airy.

You: Are in town to go to Solvang...check out the Danish scene...see the local quarter horses or Ostriches or are on your way up the 101
Moreover: You need someplace to grab breakfast
The Place: Ellen's Pancake House in Buellton - across the way from Anderson's Pea Soup
The Food: The variety and scope of breakfast food here was fantastic. The specials went from chorizo/egg & tortilla to kilbasa with eggs, hash browns and toast. The servings are a little much but if you have an appetite this is the place. The crew here was very nice and ladies were not only thoughtful but were helpful with the local color.
It clearly was the place the locals came and it seemed like it had been around quite a while. I really enjoyed the entire experience here and did not leave wanting. I was so glad I stopped here instead of a Dennys or some other generic place. Its right on the corner and hard to miss on the Avenue of the Flags in Buellton. -

Ellen's is a great place to come for breakfast. I ended up getting the Danish pancakes with sausage. The pancakes were very nice; they were light and crispy and weren't too heavy. The sausage was nice yet plain and a bit oily. Next time, I think I'll just get the pancakes. Their homemade jams go well with the pancakes.
I would definitely come back here again. -

I'm do not normally rate restaurants with five stars. Very seldom. But I have to say that, out of the forty plus times that I have eaten here, I have NEVER had anything that I did not enjoy. The ambiance is upscale diner. But don't let the common furnishings fool you. The food is made of the highest quality ingredients, and everything is well prepared. The danish pancakes are excellent. The sandwiches, and burgers are also always great. The dinners are incredible with good sized portions. The fried chicken, prime rib, and roast pork are really really excellent. Ellen's is a local institution. If you're in the area, by all means stop by.

We love Ellen's Danish Pancake House. We've had the Danish pancakes with the homemade jam. We prefer Ellen's pancakes over Paula's pancakes in Solvang. The one time we went to Paula's, our pancakes were overcooked.
At Ellen's, we usually go for the lunches. Our favorite is the turkey club. It's huge. It's definitely enough to share.
On our last visit, I had the cinnamon roll. Yes, just one cinnamon roll. The waitress didn't even bother to ask if I wanted more than one. They're that big! I love that it was fluffy and flavorful. The frosting wasn't too much. My husband had a well done hashbrown, which was perfectly crispy. Our friend had the pancakes with strawberries and whip cream with a side of bacon. He ordered the bacon well done, and it was perfectly crispy as well. The order of pancakes was so large that we had to help him with the bacon.
When we walked in, we were seated immediately. We usually don't have problems getting seated. Once you're seated, someone immediately comes over and asks if you would like a cup of coffee. The decor is homey. It still has a bit of diner feel to it because of the counter service. -

Excellent food. Pancakes were thick, fluffy, moist, and had a great taste. Hash browns were not greasy or oily at all. Service was right on the ball and friendly.
Has your hometown breakfast diner feel. Our coffee cups were never less than half filled. Strawberry jam complemented the cakes perfectly.
Prices were to be expected for the area. Very pleased for our first visit! -

Man, what happened Ellen? This spot has become overpriced and overhyped. We stopped in for breakfast with a large group, and ordered average food. My friend's chicken fried steak was bland, my eggs and sausage were mediocre, spinach omelet went unfinished. I was embarrased because I was raving about this place to my friends, but it had very poor results. Service was average, coffee was watered down. Will not return
