There are two places in Surry County where you can learn how to fly. I trained in Mt. Airy and Elkin "International" was a frequent destination for touch and goes. They have avgas on the field, 100LL, and maps and other pilot goodies can be found. On weekends, it is a great place to shoot the shit if flying is your thing.
Office hours have always been shaky, if you are coming in at night and need services, call ahead and make sure someone will be there, otherwise divert to Winston Salem (INT).
Lastly, it must have the brightest damned rotating beacon in the known world. You can see the thing in night VFR conditions climbing out of Charlotte (CLT)!
