San Francisco, CA
My husband and I had our mini-moon here, and we had a wonderful stay! I agree with all the other reviews about the special touches that this inn provides: gift basket, bottle of port, free happy hour, and a delicious continental breakfast.
When we went wine tasting along Highway 128, the inn provided us with a basket including paper plates, plastic utensils and cups, napkins, tablecloth, and cold packs. We headed over to the local store in Elk to buy some food and packed everything in to the basket. We were glad to have the ability to sit at a picnic table and snack at a couple of wineries while we went wine tasting. It was good to have a food break between drinking!
We loved the Elk Cove Inn, and we would definitely stay there again when we visit Mendocino County! -

This place is really nice. You get a gift basket with some local wine upon arrival and the rooms are cozy with a nice fireplace. They host a cocktail hour each afternoon and play lots of Sinatra! The breakfast spread is incredible and delicious!!
This place is right on the beach so it is only a short walk down the hill and only a short walk into town. Really beautiful and a great deal for this area. My boyfriend and I will be back! -

The level of hospitality and attention to detail at this establishment is second to none. We were upgraded to a Suite since it was rainy and midweek and the suite was huge with its own porch and whirlpool tub but we still prefer the cozy charm of the cottages.
Note to all of the travelers along the Mendocino coast late in the day: The Elk Cove Inn is the best value around you get FREE happy hour drinks, gift basket, incredible breakfast and fantastic view, friendly staff, fresh flowers in the rooms etc.
This is THE spot on the West Coast for lovers -- nuff said.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Cosmetically, this is the nicest inn I've ever stayed at.
One of the owners wasn't that nice to us and this place is not setup for kids. If you have kids, just don't come here. The owner actually told us that if our daughter made any noise, they would kick us out.
They also seemed to be very surprised that we were checking in with our daughter, which they shouldn't be since I told them three times (once before booking the room and two more times after booking the room). Their website wouldn't let me book the room with 3 people so I called and asked if it was OK to bring my daughter as the third person and they said it was OK, so then I booked the room for 2 people (their website would not let me book it for 3 people). After I booked the room, I called again to remind them that there would be 3 people in the room.
They assured me on the phone that it would be OK, but then the owner made a big deal of showing me the booking paper that said there would be no kids, as if it's my fault that they failed to write it down correctly.
No internet access and no phones (a feature?).
The breakfast was OK. The food was good but it wasn't spectacular or anything. The price is on the high side but worth it considering the view you get and the rooms are very nice.Comment from Elaine B. of Elk Cove Inn 11/9/2010

Romance, beauty, romance, great food, romance, seclusion, romance, and so much to do. You can interpret the word "romance" any way your dirty little mind takes you.
Stayed here in July for a wonderful, glorious 4 days and 3 nights in an Ocean View Jr Suite. It was pricey, but worth every penny.
The room we had was spacious enough and well decorated in a comfortable yet slightly rustic feeling fitting of a place right on the ocean. And it had a couple of comfortable chairs already facing the big picture windows overlooking the cove. I've uploaded a couple of pictures of the building the room is in - 2nd floor, upper left. Private balcony, fireplace, small carafe of port in the room, quiet, and a nice tub for two.
The breakfasts or just right, and a little different each day. You can choose to have dinner here and the food was the same level as some of the best restaurants in the area. Make sure to make your reservation so you are there during sunset.
And talk to the other people. The night we had dinner there, each table (all couples) sort of stayed to themselves and spoke quietly. After a while I introduced myself to another table. And within 15 minutes the place was all talking together, having fun, and sharing stories of their stay.
As far as activities, from here you can walk down to the cove or over to the few shops and places in Elk. You can easily drive to Mendocino and the surrounding areas or go to points south (I recommend Point Arena).
BTW, keep you door closed at night or one of the local bats may fly into your room.Listed in: Heading a ways up the coast

I really enjoyed my stay here. We had a room in the main house and if I go back again, I will definitely stay in a room with a view of the ocean. Not to say I didn't love our room. It was so comfortable, charming and peaceful! It had antique furniture but not the kind that smells antique-y or makes you feel creepie, but the beautiful dark wood. There was port by our bed at night, a bottle of wine, no t.v., great robes, a fireplace and an incredible breakfast! This is the kind of place where the fog is actually welcoming because it helps create a romantic weekend.
They have access to the beach via a beautiful walk through the trees. We took a stroll down to the beach one night after dinner only to stumble upon a huge dead seal. So scary because it was pretty dark and all I could see was a weird form! Definitely take a flashlight with you.
Its such a beautiful, magical place. So serene. I for one, love this kind of weekend where you turn the cell phone off, play games, take walks and hit a couple of the local wineries. If you really want to relax, I would recommend a spa treatments on the property. Ahhhhh......Listed in: Best Weekend's Away

Every now and then You are lucky enough to hit the jack pot. For me, the jack pot is this place !
What can I tell you except that the food, the rooms, the staff.... All get a gold star. If that isn't enough, then take a LONG walk on the beach, visit the local shops, breathe the clear, cool air.
The staff is generous with service, the food is REAL food, with real flavor and the rooms feel better than home.
Here, you truly get what you pay for. -

I really thought I knew what a good B&B/Inn was before I visited Elk Cove Inn, but my experience over the past 4th of July weekend made me change my mind. Elk Cove Inn is by far the best place I have stayed in my adult years. My husband and I needed some time away; some alone time...just the two of us. I stumbled upon this Inn on a few different websites, and all I saw was positive reviews. I knew this is where we were going to spend a spectacular weekend.
And, it really was an unforgettable weekend. The Inn was perfect! It was all the small things that made it amazing. The welcome package (wine, cookies, popcorn, and fruit)...and let me say the cookies are amazing. Also, the fresh picked flowers in three different locations, and the candles make it very romantic for anyone. As the other's said, the breakfast is amazing! My tip: try a little bit of everything...you will not be disappointed (and I am a very picky eater!) The staff is great also...especially Elaine, the owner. She truly shows every guest what 'southern hospitality' is all about.
We stayed in the Lumber Baron room, which was large, and very cute. It was in the main house. It was quiet, and had it's own entrance which was nice for us since we came in around 10-11pm and didn't want to wake anyone. We even saw 3 deer in front of our room one night. Even though we loved this room so much, we will upgrade to an ocean view cottage next time (hopefully December).
If you need a nice time away, this is definitely the place to go! -

It took me about 5 minutes upon arrival to look over at my husband and say "this is the best Bed and Breakfast we have ever stayed in".
I will start by saying that the inn and the rooms look even better in person than in the pictures. The inn is located on a cliff overlooking the ocean, with a magnificent view of Gunderson rock and easy access to the beach. There is a lovely gazebo with chairs and small tables, ideal for watching the sunset while enjoying a nice glass of wine.
We arrived in the afternoon, and were greeted by Jeff, a lovely English man that was not only very courteous and helpful, but also a great person to converse with. He handed us a welcome basket with a delicious bottle of Mendocino wine, home made cookies and grapes. I can't remember when was the last time we received a welcome basket checking into a hotel, but if there is one thing you will notice during your stay, is that they go above and beyond in every aspect and have really put a lot of thought into how to make your stay at Elk Cove unique and memorable.
We checked into our room which was much larger than we anticipated. We stayed in the Cypress Garden and we really felt at home. I can not speak enough of how clean and spotless the room and the bathroom were. Immaculate. I'm usually pretty icky when I stay in hotels, but this place was absolutely spotless!! The tub was so clean that I felt like I was the first person to ever set foot in it. If you are considering staying in Cypress Garden, you won't regret it. The bathroom is enormous, the room is very spacious and well appointed, and the side window has a lovely view of the forest.
The inn also includes a delicious and hearty breakfast and wine and cheese in the afternoon. There are plenty of board games and puzzles available, as well as some DVDs if you want to watch a movie in the communal living room. -

No tv, no internet, no cell phone, no blackberry. This was the first thing I was thinking when I made the reservation to this bed and breakfast for my wife's birthday. Now looking back I think those things make this place even more special.
Its a very special place that helps you get in touch with yourself, with nature, with your wife. You will have the best sleep you have had in years. The ocean sounds and views will take your breath away. It really does help you recharge the batteries. Waking up and seeing the pacific ocean from the suites is spectacular. The welcome basket, the wonderful breakfast, the relaxing massage at the spa and guest book to write about your experience at the lnn make this place unforgettable. We will be back and its worth every penny!
If you're looking to get away from the everyday hustle of life you can't do much better than this.

Elk Cove Inn is a lovely B&B--one of the best I've stayed in. The Inn is set on Cuffy's Cove, a secluded beach with some Goonies-style rock formations in the ocean.
We had a room in the main house, which was cozy and had one of those automatic fireplaces, views of the ocean and gazebo, wifi, and a telescope! Upon arrival--later than we expected--they gave us a basket with a small bottle of wine, fruit, and homemade cookies. Delightful. The breakfast--buffet-style but with your own nicely set table--was delicious with lots of variety. Morning pie....yum.
What I appreciated most about Elk Cove Inn: it really caters to couples. (I think they may have a no kids policy) The size of the Inn--15 guests or so--makes it feel intimate but you don't feel pressure to mingle or chat with the other guests. Not that I'm anti-social, but I don't want to hear about your job in the Valley when I'm on vacation, ok?
Overall: at Elk Cove Inn, you get the atmosphere of a small B&B but with the service/privacy of a hotel. -

Excellent price to value ratio, fantastic view, beautiful area of the coast, great location. We had such a nice time there. My only regret is that we did spend more time. Five o'clock drinks and appetizers. Gourmet breakfast, peaceful, comfortable. We will stay there again and again.

We are in love. With each other again after spending a few nights at the Elk Cove Inn, but also with the inn itself. We are already talking about returning. The room we stayed in was lovely (the Lumber Baron's). The feather bed was great to snuggle into, the linens were plush and high quality, thick, fluffy towels, comfy luxurious robes. Our room had a fridge and a microwave, and also a tv, if you're really into watching it instead of enjoying the ocean. Local wine, fruit, homemade cookies, and popcorn in a charming basket were presented upon arrival, and our room was also stocked with cocoa mix, assorted teas, local organic coffee (and all the condiments needed), port, and chocolates. Coffee and brownies were available in the office, and from 4-6 pm munchies, wine, and a mix-your-own bar was open. You don't go hungry or thirsty here! The breakfast is divine...the best I've ever had in an inn or hotel or B&B.
The grounds are gorgeous, and it's hands-down the best location to stay south of Mendocino, maybe on the whole California coast. There is a wooden staircase that leads to a path to the beach, which is right below. That same path leads into the little town, a super short walk away, if you want to grab something to eat or need something from the little store (which, by the way, has fabulous gourmet cheeses). Or, stay at the inn and watch the waves from an ocean view room, the breakfast room (sweeping views), or from the gazebo or lawn. Heavenly. The staff only makes the experience better. Oh, and if you'd like a picnic, no problem! They'll present you with a cooler, ice pack, and fully stocked picnic basket at the blink of an eye. Free phone calls (no cellular service). Upscale without being pretentious. I want to go back!!
My only regret is that I didn't have a massage. The morning we were to leave, I overheard a woman at breakfast RAVING about how she'd had the best massage ever the day before. I might just have to try out a service or two next time we visit! People visit once and come back againa and again. We met a coupl from Toronto who had returned, and the log book in our room had many testimonials from people who had been back three, four, and countless more times. That speaks volumes to me about a place! -

The shower in the ocean side cottage I stayed in had a full length picture window overlooking the beach...and the picnic tables on the beach. As much as I enjoy scarring young children and old people alike, if I'm going to share my delicious yet ever so naughty bits with the world, it's gonna be on a pricey pay-per-view special (and only for the sake of Art, of course).
Barring the peek-show bathroom, and the fact that our "cottage" was really just a room in a cottage and we could hear the other guests when they got up to pee and shower, we really did have a nice stay at the Elk Cove Inn. We got in later than we thought, but they still accommodated us for dinner, and even let us sneak in a late-night glass of wine after the restaurant had closed. The bed was cozy, and the port at the bed side was a nice treat. The beach was empty after dark, perfect for a campfire and some skinny dipping.
My favorite thing was the guest book, which contained the outrageous (and icky, if you thought about the fact that they had once stayed in the same room) confessions of previous guests upon their stay. To quote my favorite: "My new husband and I enjoyed our stay at the inn-- and the view from the shower of all god's creatures and creation opened us up to erotic memories that will last a lifetime." *shudder* I do not want to know about any erotic memories that involve god OR his creatures. Especially not his creatures. However, this post did lead to the catchphrase for the weekend, "Boners for god," which I'm sure the other couple sharing our cottage enjoyed hearing ad nauseaum, followed by insane laughter and plays on the phrase, such as "boners for jesus", along with an in depth discussion of the character "Boner" from Growing Pains. Who needs tv when you can TALK about tv all weekend?Listed in: I've got sand in my…

By far, this was the best B&B/small hotel experience we've ever had. We spent the first weekend in April in the Seascape Room (FYI, it's got far better views than the Baywatch room, but you can't tell that by the pics on their website - Seascape is also far more private). The staff were gracious and friendly, but not in a pushy way (we're not the most outgoing people, and we like to keep to ourselves, but these folks read the guests just right). The breakfast was heavenly - it deserves all 5 stars all on its own! The room was 5-star, as well, and the views/location deserve about 10. No kidding. We can't wait to go back.

My bride and I went here for our honeymoon. We fell in love with it immediately. As previous posters have noted, the views are amazing - I glanced at some of the other locations when we were driving up and down the coast, and I can safely say that none really compare.
We stayed in both the Bavarian Cottage and the Burke suite. The wife loved the Bavarian; mostly, the deep, rich smell of redwood and cedar in the room. It has a huge king bed and picture windows overlooking the rock formations in the bay. The bathroom is a tiny bit cramped but not so much as to reduce the Inn's rating, in our books. There are two easy chairs, a wood-fire stove, and a small flat-screen TV with DirectTV. There's just an awesome feeling when you sit in the chairs with the fire burning taking in the beauty of the cove. We only watched the TV a little - mostly Seinfeld reruns - but you seriously don't need it. It was mostly just for background noise while we worked on puzzles or drank port (freshened in the room every night!) as we got ready to go to bed. One drawback - since cell phone service is nonexistent, if you need to contact the outside world you need to use the inter-googles. The wireless is really spotty in the Bavarian, so if you want privacy while you upload useless shit to Facebook (like I do) you're out of luck.
We LOVED the Burke suite. It's big, and has a ground floor patio overlooking the cove. It has a gas fireplace, which wasn't quite as rustic as the Bavarian but still effective. The bathroom is really big and has plenty of room for two (and a private shitter - separate room from the rest of the bathroom). Internet signal is excellent, so on the blustery days when you're staying in you can crank up the Netflix and relax.
Every morning there is a buffet-style breakfast in the common room. Delicious. Seriously. I overate every time we went in, but it was worth it. Fresh fruit, poached eggs, omelets, potatoes, all sorts of stuff. The menu rotated from day to day, but one of the staples you need to try: the bread pudding with the Whiskey Walnut Sauce. Seriously amazing. I would often go back for seconds and thirds.
The town of Elk/Greenwood is within walking distance, and a hiking path from the Inn leads down to the beach. Apparently some people think that the town is not walking distance - it's about a quarter mile away and slightly uphill. Suck it up, get off your fat ass and walk. It's picturesque and not worth the gas. We tried two local restaurants, Greenwood Pier and Bridget Dolans (Pub), both of which are great. The staff can tell you about other good local choices.
Speaking of the staff. Elaine is the owner/manager and is a little sparkplug. Tons of fun to talk to. You will often see her cracking the whip on her loveable staff (not that they really need it). Jeff is great too - he's from north Britain and has lived in the States for about 15 years. If you're ever bored just go into the common room and see if they're around. Nice, down-to-earth, caring people. For instance: we had been on the road for two weeks and seriously needed laundry done. I asked Elaine if there were any local facilities, and she said no - but offered to have her staff do it in their commercial washer for 5 bucks. Sold! She also took several postcards from us and agreed to send them after we left on Sunday - we were short on postage, and even though we gave her money for the stamps, totally considerate of her to go to the post office to run that errand for us.
Finally, the wife and I did the Couples Renewal Massage/Spa Treatment in the spa facility. A little pricey, but worth. Look into it.
I cannot sing the praises of this place enough. We would love to come back and visit those fine folks again. Although a little isolated, it is a great adventure and perfect if you are a city-goer and want to get away from the bullshit for a while. -

Let's first get to the bottom line: Bar none, if you want to stay in the lap of luxury you should go no further. You have arrived. Everything here is wonderful. Stop here and do not pass go.
At the Elk Cove Inn it is a total package. You have to combine the view, the sounds, and the air. Sprinkle in a fireplace, feather bed with superb bedding, huge comfy Adirondack chairs (pointed out the picture window to the sea). Finally garnish it all with soft robes, music, and port, and you get just a taste of what it is like to stay at the Elk Cove Inn. Not to mention the breakfasts! This is a Bed & Breakfast after all and the owners did not forget the Breakfast part!
Breakfast is served buffet style with a view of the Pacific. However you'll be at risk of ignoring the view for the food! There is something for almost everyone from the Breakfast connoisseur to the health conscious (though I would forego that for the stay!) Well, okay one European who apparently complained about no fish... or maybe no bento boxes for certain cultures, but otherwise a delicious home cooked Breakfast buffet with all the trimmings. Oh and there is that view of the Pacific out the dining room windows in case Breakfast does not suit your tastes.
Visiting in February we expected rain. We expected cool temps (4-6C) (cold by Southern California standards). We actually were lucky that it was not windy at all. I'll mention this more than once, we are not Beach Bunnies looking for a tan. We wanted no reason to go out unless we wanted to. The room had it all. The weather in the winter is perfect for the romantic tasks at hand.
One night with light rain falling we curled up in the gorgeous SAM MCCANSE room with a late dinner of cheese, crackers, bread, and Champagne (ok sparkling wine). We turned off all the lights, opened the sliding door to the sea, lit the supplied candles, turned on the supplied music, fired up the (gas) fireplace, slid into the soft comfy supplied robes, sat in the generously oversize Adirondack Chairs (complete with soft blankets) and ate our 'dinner' off the supplied trays. It was overwhelmingly peaceful, serene, and romantic. Later we had a nightcap with the supplied port. You simply have to try it to know it.
I hope the Innkeeper never ever has cell phone coverage or TV's the room we stayed in. This is a place to go to leave the world behind. If you need that at the Inn, you should stop wasting your money and stay at a Motel 6.
So is anything wrong? Well... there could have been more CDs in the room (soothing selections - relaxation style - like the guitar solos). Or better yet a cord to adapt one's iPod to the AUX input of the supplied stereo. I jury-rigged one up from my camera playback cord but alas, only one channel of course given it was really a video cable. These iPod to RCA Phono jack adapter cords ought to be available at Radio Shack etc. Anything else... hmm... okay... the eves on the house don't extend far enough to cover the deck off the upper rooms. So you can't sit outside when it is raining unless you move to the covered Gazebo which we did. But we are weird in that we love bundling up and sitting in the cool night air during a mild rain (covered of course!)... Anything else... a bellhop! Just kidding! No nothing else. It was THAT complete an experience. It is that excellent. Of course all this has a cost and only you can decide if it is worth it. We made memories we'll carry all our days. What value do you place on that?
One night I ambled out of bed to sounds of the sea. We always left the door open, the bed is quite warm, the robes very soft and warm, and the tile in the bathroom is heated. So there was no reason not to sleep to the sounds of the sea and the rain on the roof. As I looked out the door I could see the constellations of winter struggling to shine through a thinning in the clouds. Lost for moment I finally recognized Orion and Canis Major as they leaned over to set in the sea... It was so dark that the combined starlight, diffused through the thin clouds, lent a soft glow to the sea, the waves, and the rocks. As the clouds won out, they softly faded to dark and all that was left were the night and the sounds.
The Mendocino coast will never disappoint those of us who are not 'white sand bikini beach bunnies'. It's a coastline of majestic cliffs. A coast of huge waves slowly winning a war of attrition with eons old rock formations. Of craggy trails follow a craggy coastline where in the winter you are the only people you see. A coast of fog horns, lighthouses, and small towns built long ago when logging was king. The Elk Cove Inn is the perfect jumping off spot for that Pacific coastline. Or perhaps more to the point, the perfect place to simply stop jumping and start relaxing. Our sincere compliments to Elaine and her staff. We'll be back... hmm... maybe the 'Same Time Next Year?' (sic)
PS: I did not mention the Spa as we did not avail ourselves of the Spa -

If you're looking for a little lap of luxury on the California coast with a down home vibe, look no further for this is your place. Elk Cove Inn, in the quaint little town of Elk, is a Mendocino gem. Ocean views, a gift basket of wine and snacks, complimentary port and chocolates, a "make your own cocktail bar" in the afternoon, warm & fuzzy robes, the most comfortable down bedding, yummy champagne buffet breakfast, and friendly, hands-on service are some of the treats that await you. The inn is especially great for a romantic getaway or special occasion, and the happy memories will remain with you for years to come.

Stayed here for our honeymoon, thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet and gorgeous views. We stayed in the Greenwood Cottage, (also saw the Bavarian Cottage, preferred the Greenwood). Room had awesome view, cozy fireplace, and fun shower window overlooking beach. We loved the breakfasts and the very gracious host Elaine. Such a sweetheart. We will definitely be back, only complaint is the price, a little steep, but worth it for a splurge!

The owner and staff were also very friendly and helpful as to places to go in the area. We would definitely like to return and would recommend it to any travelers in the area.

If you have a problem with ocean front rooms, delicious homemade breakfast, a complementary gift basket with wine, and friendly staff that makes you feel at home, Elk Cove Inn may not be for you. However, if you're like me, this place is IT. A short distance south of Mendocino (or "Spendocino" as we heard the locals call it), Elk is a small town of 80 full-time residents. Elk Cove, the location of this inn, was actually the epicenter of the logging business that established the hamlet back in the early 20th century. Elk Cove Inn is actually the property on which the lumber used to rebuild SF after the 1906 earthquake was purchased!! Our room was just about that historic trade...pretty awesome to think about if you ask me. History aside, my boyfriend and I stayed in the "Seascape" room for a belated birthday gift to me. What a gift! I might have to start making b&b hopping a new habit! Seascape has a clear view of the ocean and was the best room in the main house if you ask me. The only thing it lacked was a stereo that would have been great, but I understand why it wasn't included. The rooms are fairly close together, but lucky for us, we were the only guests in the main house for the night. Talk about luck! The owner, Elaine, and her staff prepared a delicious and hearty breakfast the next day. The spread included fresh biscuits, croissants, spinach quiche, bacon, sausage, MIMOSAS, fair trade coffee and an expanisive view of the coast. Do yourself a favor and book a room at the Elk Cove Inn....you deserve it!

Okay, okay, I know I am a five star kind of girl, but if I could give The Elk Cove Inn and Spa my own rating-it would be an "11"! (-; I always choose a bed and breakfast if possible when traveling or on vacation, so I have stayed at many, in Mendocino County, and all over the United States. I will try to keep this simple-The Elk Cove Inn simply surpasses them all. We were married there almost two weeks ago, and it was quite simply, magic. The Inn, the view, and the energy is always so wonderful there, I almost could have gotten away with not doing anything extra for my special day. My friends, and my new East Coast relatives couldn't have been more bewitched by the Inn. They were so amazed at the array of fabulous food at breakfast(it really is quite a spread and so yummy), and were tickled by the welcome basket Elaine puts in every room(huge homemade cookies, fruit and a nice bottle of Husch wine) upon your arrival.I have stayed here many times, and I wanted to have my wedding in the outdoor gazebo, and it was just beautiful. The main thing that we love about this place is that you never want for anything. Elaine is the consumate Innkeeper/owner. She really has it down, and knows what you need before you do. We went to two other bed and breakfasts on our Northern California honeymoon, and had to come back on our way back home, and stay two more nights here. At the other bed and breakfasts, my new Husband kept noting aloud everytime he needed something that wasn't available, simple things like little creams in your fridge, and would say everytime, "Elaine would have that"... And don't get him started about the coffee, as Elaine makes the best! I could go on and on, but think you should just go on... and see... for yourself...

We stayed 2 nights in the "Cliffside Covey" cottage. The room was great, with an (obstructed) view of the ocean. Excellent breakfast buffet in the morning, port and chocolate in the room at night.
