We just stopped by for a quick drink and appetizer and will defiantly be back again for dinner. The buffalo boat appetizers were filled with diced buffalo chicken tenders and bleu cheese were very tasty alternative to traditional potato skins.  September 17

In town visiting for the holidays and we ate at this place for dinner.  The food was mediocre, but what was most off-putting was the service--which actually wasn't bad until the end when I questioned the charge of $13.50 for a HALF order of nachos with chili.  Not thinking this was such an unusual question, I soon learned that it was.  When the waitress returned, she informed me the nachos were $12.00 so she removed a beverage we ordered and that I "ended up saving myself $1.00."   She did not apologize for overcharging us, did not tell us to have a nice evening (which isn't a huge deal but usually is nice to be told considering we just spent $100.00 there), and she simply placed the check on the table and walked away.

I wouldn't recommend this place.  Sub-par food and bad service.

My update:  I despise this place.  Service is awful, food has gone downhill, and it is obvious the management doesn't give a crap.

Attempted to come for dinner on a Saturday night 2 weeks ago and there wasn't any parking! I'd say it was around 7pm.  Last night (5pm on a Saturday) we got right in with no problem, not even a wait!  Our server Monica is right on the money, best waitress we've had in a while.  She got a 25% tip. (we rarely tip that high)

My boyfriend and I shared an order of Buffalo Boats (like potato skins, but with buffalo chicken and blue cheese) - delicious.
He had a draft beer and I had the Snickers Martini  - loved it.
I got the turkey burger and added avocado to it with sweet potato fries.
It was juicy, not dry like some turkey burgers I've had elsewhere.
My bf got a bacon cheeseburger, asked for medium well, came out medium rare.  He sent it back and got a new burger within 5 minutes.
We got 2 slices of cheesecake to go and Monica put large sides of whipped cream, raspberry sauce and chocolate sauce to go with them.
Noticed it started getting crowded as we left.
Will most definitely be back. :)

I'll start this one off by saying that I visited this place for dinner on a football Sunday.

If all you want to do is drink and watch sports - consider this three stars... they have tons of flat-screens lining the bar (inside and out).

Had I not heard "[F* general explicative] [F* anti-gay explicative]" upon entering this establishment, I may have desired to order a full meal.  We ended up ordering appetizers, Buffalo Wings, and dessert to go.

The eat-in food was average to less-than average.  Even the wings at Hooters are much better.  The coconut shrimp were slightly burnt.  The service was average to "cold."

After finishing our so-so food, we asked for a "Warm Brownie Sundae" to-go.  We got a cold brownie and cookie in a tin, and two small scoops of ice cream in a separate container.  Although the cookie isn't what we asked for, the whip cream, caramel, and chocolate were completely forsaken.   The least they could have done is warmed up the brownie and cookie, both of which tasted average (even after we warmed them).

I'll suggest they care don't whether or not their customers leave happy.

I had dinner here recently, and surprisingly enough, it was pretty tasty. We got a Panne Cotto appetizer, which was flavorful and well put together. I had a turkey burger, which was pretty good. It was also huge. The g/f enjoyed her sandwich as well, and her Creamsicle martini was made perfectly.

The service was attentive and friendly. Can't ask for much more than that.

The atmosphere isn't anything special, but they do have enough TVs to allow me to zone out and watch sports and completely ignore anyone and everyone around me.

Eli's is a pretty tastey place to go and one of my fave for happy hour. It is pretty cool because you just walk in have a seat and then there is a complimentary buffet there. They have all sorts of finger foods in the buffet including crab cakes, veggies and pasta. I really like Eli's. The atmosphere is so laid back and everyone seems to be having a good time.

The down side of Eli's would have to be that the later it gets, the more crowded it gets and the place isn't so big so it can get quite claustrophobic. But I would say if you are looking for a good place to have a happy hour drink or two, this is the place to go.

P dot S dot: I have to recommend the mashed potato pizza. Now I know what you're thinking, "taters on a pizza?!?" But trust me it is delicious and one of my faves. So live a little and try it.

Finally went to Eli's after 3 years living in Hamden - what a pleasant surprise. Went on a Saturday afternoon & the service was delightful, & the food was fresh and flavorful.

We'll definitely be making this a regular place now - in terms of good places in Hamden, we are delighted to have made this discovery.

I love Eli's for happy hour. At 4:30 on Friday afternoons, fried delights, (mushrooms, poppers, zucchini), vodka penne, a carving station, peel and eat shrimp, vegetables, and rolls are served buffet style. For happy hour the bar fills in quickly and high top tables are usually reserved. I get in early for a seat at the huge bar. Be warned the place gets especially packed when college is in session.
Although, I love happy hour, I felt that for dinner it was over priced.

My favorite part of Eli's is also the reason I don't go there as much anymore. The happy hour. Eli's has a great happy hour buffet with all of the fried likings, pasta, wings, etc. They have great drink specials and a nice beer selection. The only thing is, this place gets PACKED. Sometimes it's tolerable but sometimes this place is just ridiculous.

Lately I like Eli's for lunch. The sachettini is an excellent pasta with a light creamy tomato basil sauce. The salads are always decent and the burgers are tasty.

We went on a Monday evening in January, around 8 in the evening, so none of the elbowing other reviewers mention. )I can see where it would get that way!) We were looking for a quiet dinner, and EOW fit the bill. You should know that there are actually two places to eat on that corner, both part of Eli's--one is deli and pizza (and it also gets packed!), and the restaurant/lounge, which also houses a private room. You can park in the private lots on either side, provided they aren't jammed. Eli's is near the crossroads of Whitney and Dixwell Avenues, which is a very busy part of Hamden.

I had been searching for something Italian, which is difficult to find on Monday nights since the better Italian restaurants are closed on Mondays. Eli's "Santa Fe Chicken," which involves penne, sun-dried tomatoes, and black olives, certainly satisfied my craving.

My spouse and I were impressed that Richard, our waiter, was attentive and polite without "hovering." He had offered to bring out shredded Parmesan cheese for my dish, but after a short delay came back with grated in a plastic cup, along with apologies for the restaurant running out.

We felt taken care of, with both our social needs and our eating needs satisfied. I don't know what Eli's would be like when school is in session, but it was just right that evening.

This place is just ridiculously bad.  We went there with a couple of friends.  They didn't want to go there because they have had too many negative experiences.  We convinced them to go again with us.  I decided to split the pizza special with my friend.  Being lactose intolerant, we ordered the pizza special, no cheese on half.  After about an hour wait our order finally came out.  They gave us a pizza with half of it being a cheese pizza.  Nobody could figure out how to remedy the situation and we ended up leaving and not eating.  They could not figure out how to make a pizza and only put cheese on half!!!  I should also mention that during the entire time we were there, the bartender only served me one glass of wine.  She was either really bad at her job or ignoring us.

I stopped in on a Friday because I heard about the happy hour buffet, and it was just OK. The carving station was cool, and so was the fact that they had pasta, cheese and crackers and raw veggies, but the website said there would be peel-and-eat shrimp. There was no shrimp. Decent bar with a good beer selection, but you can get cheaper beers and better happy hour deals and free food at other local bars in the area.

We went here last night and it was so crowded it took people forever to get drinks, and you couldn't move around at all!  We looked at the menu but didn't order anything... too expensive, but everything on the menu looked good and I have heard rave reviews.  But really we went with 4 ppl and had 2 rounds and the bill came to $60!  So expensive to drink there too!!!!

Last spring my organization had an event in the downstairs of elis on whitney. The event was planned well and we expected a great event. Unfortunately the wait staff( other than our bartender) were rude and pretty much useless. Our cocktails were over cooked and most of my group left hungry. It was a bad experience and they even set off the alarms to kick us out early with no rational reason for the early rudeness. I would never give the establishment my money nor recommend it to anyone

Eli's is a great place to go for drinks and food. The food is A+! I have had everything from pizza to pasta to calamari and it has never let me down. The bartenders are very friendly and knowledgeable. the one thing about this place that stinks for patrons (but good for the business) is that is gets absolutely mobbed on the weekends. If you try going there anytime after 5pm on the weekends, be prepared to have to shove your way in. the crowd varies from frat dudes to business people enjoying happy hour. Overall this is a great place and I would highly rec commend it!

Two favorites of mine are the Corn Beef Reuben and the Cheese Steak (I get with onions and mushrooms) and it comes with steak fries or coleslaw (both are good).  Tasty and filling.  We also went one time for a catered affair which was lovely with several entrees and sides and found it to be delightful.  I am in Hamden at lunch time mostly so that is my experience.  Recommended.  Also across the street, same side of Whitney Avenue (formerly Belmonte's Pizza for like 50 years)  is another newer redecorated part of Eli's where they serve Italian food and have prepared foods in a case for takeout.  A friend said it was good as well.

Used to like this place but the food is sorta boring now and recently had a bad experience with a special menu meal that tasted so bad.. I didn't even eat it but they insisted on charging me still after I complained.. what restaurant does that? Learn to cook penne rustica before you put it on the menu! good place for a beer though....  I would rather go to JP Dempseys
