This place is what it appears to be. An English pub.
I had the Guiness sauced burger with "chips", my colleague got the fish and chips. Both were very good iterations of the dish. The beer was cold and they had a nice selection from across the pond.
They also have fried large pretzels with a mustard sauce that was unreal. You have to try it.
I would go back. -
Review from Sarah S.
When I was staying at the Central Loop Hotel, I went to Elephant & Castle at night for some drinks with my friends. It's super convenient for those staying in the hotel as it requires no walking outside, no taxis, nothing like that. The Central Loop Hotel has it's own card access exit from Elephant Castle into the hotel which is really nice.
The downside is Elephant & Castle doesn't have a lot of drink specials. Also, their clientele seemed to be mostly business people in their late 30s and 40s so not the usual scene for my friends and I. However, we enjoyed our drinks and their fish and chips were solid.
Service was alright although nothing to write home about.
I would highly recommend the pub for people in the Central Loop Hotel! I don't think I would make a special point of coming here though. -

This location was my hangout spot when I worked very close to it a few years ago. I used to go and grab some drinks before jumping on the Metra train.
I love Irish bars. The food that I have tried was pretty good along with the vibe. They seem to always have nice staff working. Although one night the server we had looked at me strange when I/we asked if they had any NON BEER drink specials.
It does definitely get a bit loud in here so be ready to talk loud.
Now being downtown the drinks are pricey. I think I was paying $6-$7 for my mixed drinks. Yes to me that is high when I can go to my local suburb bar and pay $3-$5 for the same drink. Again that is Chicago prices so whatever I am out to be social with friends.
I come into the city about once a month still to meet up for drinks and this is still our pick on where to meet up.
They have a few locations in the city so check them out.
CHEERS! :) -

My first meal in Chicago. A local stopped and suggested this place after my wife pulled out her map to look for someplace to eat. I had the meatloaf, she had the roasted chicken, both were exceptional. Chicken had crispy skin but breast was still uber moist w/ bits of thyme and rosemary. Beer was cold and I thought the selection was plentiful. Our server was Cesar and, although he was very busy, could not have been more helpful. I saw him several times scoping us out from 10-12 feet away, to be available but not interrupting. A little loud and, as we approached 8:00, became very crowded but we left very satisfied.

Love this place. First time I had ever heard of Smithwicks, so naturally I tried it with my shepherds pie. Just excellent. Portions were large, atmosphere was sort of like being in Alan Quartermain's sports club, old style with heavy dark wood, and brass highlights. Good choice for taking visitors and friends for a drink.

For what it is: A British (Inspired) Pub in the Middle of a Tourist Mecca, it's not bad. Breakfast is pretty close to a traditional English Breakfast, Drinks are reasonably priced, and they actually show "Football" (ie. Soccer) Games.
Not bloody bad! Only grievance: Closes very early. -
Review from Ryan A.
Ok beer selection, nothing fabulous. Edible food, nothing spectacular. Closes way too early for a hotel bar, if you ask me, but it's a decent enough spot to meet up at if you're hanging out in the loop after work, or staying in the attached hotel. Probably wouldn't be my first choice, though.

Review from Molly O.
I have certainly experienced a better beer list (I'm not much for English beer, sorry), a better atmosphere, and better food. However, we all know E&C serves a purpose (or three):
// It's an easy place to meet up in the Loop
// Giant portions of passable foods
// Inexpensive-ish
I got a meatloaf entree that I could have eaten for three days, for $15. It was pretty decent, and I liked the enormous side of steamed green beans. Instead of toting our leftovers around River North, myself (and the 4 other ladies I was with who couldn't finish their food either) gave our leftovers to a hobo who politely asked us "you got leftovers?" So I guess E&C serves a fourth purpose as well: hobo nourishment. -

YELP I have experienced better............................................ .......
My mother was in town so we decided to try this place out, I heard great things and yelp and mixed reviews but I wanted to try it. But I was not so impressed I felt the food was dry and they gave me something that i did not even order they where not even close!
I just feel they could do better they are in prime location a lot of buisness people go there for lunch it is so close to the willis tower so close to the banks and shopping they really could do better. It was a little loud but that is because we went at lunch hour, the waitress had no clue what she was doing or talking about.
Ehhhhhh sorry Elephant&Castle I really wanted to love you guys! -
Review from Olga S.
Very mediocre attempt at authenticity. My shepherd's pie was very blah. I had a feeling as if they just crumbled a very dried burger with fried onions and canned green peas and poured some generic gravy over mashed potatoes. My friend's bangers and mash were also laughable - over fired hotdogs with mashed potatoes and onion rings. salad was not fresh, beer was flat, wine sour. Blah. I liked the decor of the restaurant and the fact that food was readily available. Other than that - nothing else. If they think that they can feed garbage to the delirious from hunger tourists and get away with it - they are wrong. The picture of Prince William by the men's restroom doesn't make experience more royal or British or food any better.
I am not coming back. -
Review from Alan K.
I have been trying to contemplate a review for this place, but don't really have much to say about it. There was a restroom that was broken on the 1st floor, so everyone had to go to the basement to use it. I wonder when they will get it fixed.
As far as the food, I had the fish and chips. They give you ample portions of food, but I thought it tasted okay. I think this is a great place to chat as it was a really loud place, very vibrant indeed. They seemed pretty swamped during lunch time, but that's a good thing for business. -
Review from AMY D.
On Memorial day, we found many restaurants closed so we opted for our hotel's adjoined restaurant.
I was pleasantly surprised by the menu. Their menu has your typical fish n chips & Bangers and Mash but in addition had a good variety of other types of food.
The beer and wine menu is extensive.
I ordered a glass of wine and what their menu referred to as a "traditional British lunch" of cheeses, bread, fruit with chutney. It was a hearty portion and reasonably priced.Listed in: Chi Town

E&C may be decent for a quick brew with some buddies that are in town, but otherwise it may be worth avoiding. If you find yourself in the south loop area late on a weeknight, it's worth a bite to eat to get by.
I had the chicken quesadilla and have had better. My girls Teri and Mia shared the brownie bite dessert and were less than thrilled.
But hey, sometimes you just need a drink.
Be well,

Review from Matt F.
I know this is a chain, but I like this bar. They have a great draft beer selection with a good number of imports. Yes, yes, it's not as authentic as the local pubs in England, but, well...it's not in England.
The food is OK but not great. Don't bother spending the extra money for the halibut fish and chips.
If you're looking for a place to belly up to the bar on a hot afternoon and down a couple pints of Fullers, this is your place. -
Review from Mary B.
This pub holds a special place in my heart! Mainly because I studied in London and Elephant & Castle was one of the stops on the Tube. It's a little cheesy to say so, but it's true!
I go here strictly because it reminds me of London... well, as much as it can. I've only sat at the bar but every time I go here it's great. It's not your typical party bar obviously, but it's just a quaint little pub where you can sit and a have a beer after work (or in the afternoon!). I always get Strongbow when I'm there... it's kind of expensive but it's a cider beer so that is to be expected.
I've always had good experiences as far as service and everyone I take there loves it. I'll have to check out the food next time I go! But if you just want to sit at the bar with good company and good people around you, check it out. I'm assuming the other locations are just as good. I believe the one on Huron is a little bigger than Adams... so if you want to take a bigger crowd there, then go to that one! Enjoy it! :) -
Review from Kate M.
I'm still a fan of E&C. The food is always good, the service is good (even at peak lunch times), and it's a comfy place for some after work drinks.
I've had too many lunches and after work drinks here. They are always good about accommodating a group of 6 or 7 of us, which can be tough in smaller places. E&C gets pretty loud at lunch time, which is good because you're awful close to the table next to you. Since it's so close to my office I often see people I'm having a lunch meeting about, so loud is good as to not be overheard.
I don't think I've really had a bad meal here. The burgers are good, the fish and chips is good, I really like the thai salad, (when I'm looking to jump off the diet wagon) the steak and blue cheese salad is really good. It's not cheap, but it's not too pricey, it's just right for what it is.
I'm a fan. Or, should I say "Yay! I'm a fan."?Listed in: Lunch in the Loop

I've been too tough on E&C. Sure, it's not going to give any new revelations on comfort food, but I'm glad that it's here, and even more glad that I work near here again. The chicken pot pie was tasty after a long day of work, but a bit of a small portion. Crust was nice and crispy, but I couldn't care less for green beans and (even) the garlic mashed potatoes that came with it. Just fill me up on pot pie!
Service was really quick, and I love the 20 oz. Imperial Pint pours. The Guiness was just what the Weatherman ordered, and went perfectly with the chix pot pie. I am definitely going to make this a lunch and afterwork pop-in staple, now that I'm downtown again.Listed in: Wintertime Retreats, Loop Lunchin'

Good - spot in the Loop -
good specials and attentive service
try the soups, salads, and steak sandiwch -YUM
they also have great drinks - that actually have muddled berries etc. Its upscale enuff to not be a dive or a generic pub. Good food during the work day or afterward. nice crowd - its got a nice cozy feel to it too.
grab a cab anyway where to go to the next spot :) -

Minneapolis, MN
In Chicago for business, this pub was located a block down from the hotel and we were thristy for some beers...the name sounded cool, so we stopped in. I love the selection of British taps...Fullers is well represented, as well as Smithwicks, Guinness and Strongbow (mix the two for a Black Velvet...they pour a mean one here). Additionally they serve a few domestics like the local 312 from Goose Island Brewery, and Bell's Oberon (yum).
The pub fries were great with a side of mayo, not overly greasy and cooked to perfection. We also had a large plate of nachos that complemented our beers nicely.
The service was excellent, and the bartenders play their own mixes over the speakers...Belle and Sebastian was playing loudly, which was a nice change from the usual bar music.
There are a few locations in Chicago as well..with another Elephant and Castle over on Wabash that we found ourselves in later that night. Again, the beers were plenty and the service very friendly. Highly recommend this place if you're in town for a visit and can't make it north to Wrigleyville.
I wanted to steal that penguin lamp...so stinking cool. -
Review from Carol K.
Funny. I didn't even know this location of Elephant and Castle was here. But on a recent night when we wanted to grab one more night cap before heading home, we found ourselves wandering in and sliding up to the bar.
Friendly bartender but she was definitely in the "close em down" mode as she wiped and emptied everything in front of us. We were able to order some food and while I am not sure if it was the time of night or if this thing was just so darn good, but the Highland Bread Pudding was absolutely amazing (warm and gooey with fresh whipped cream)! The menu has a mix of British favorites (think Fish and Chips) and American classics (burgers) as well as some typical bar food.
Must be the lack of people in the neighborhood at night as this location closes early (I think they were kicking us out around 1am) so know before you go.
It appears that this place hits it's stride during lunch and happy hour after work (or so said the bartender). But know it's also a solid choice later in the evening . . . .just know you'll have the place pretty much to yourself! -

One Word: Average. This place is an OK spot to grab a quick beer and a bite to eat.
The dumplings were actually the best thing...with a tangy, spicy sauce that hit the spot.
Chicken curry...meh.
Burger...kind of dry, and the side salad was not crisp/fresh at all.
Service: Friendly but neglectful... -
Review from Corin W.
Dude: this is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire Chicago area. It's the kind of restaurant I'd love to open myself. It's so rejuvinating to sit in the cozy pub atmosphere with friends and drink a MONGO sized beer. (I think the official term is Gigantor-sized but I'm using creative license).
It's pub food and I love pub food. Great fish and chips but you have to go for the cod. Don't get the Haddock just because it's more expensive. Cod is firmer and has that lobster-like texture. (Even the waitresses agree and secretly laugh when folks order the haddock)
I think what I love most is that it's in the South Loop. I spent most of my twenties teaching and going to school in the South Loop and I've always loved the energy there. I know the area has changed substantially in the last fifteen years but I still love the museum/shopping/workday bustle of the streets. You can see the lake on the horizon. You can look up at the buildings and feel that incredible expansive feeling that life is so much bigger than you are. There's nothing cooler than coming out of Union station, walking a a chilly South Loop street, Jazz playing in your headphones, stopping into the Elephant and Castle and sitting and watching people from all over the world. Dude--I love that shit more than anythingListed in: Graveyard Freaks Need Love…

Chicago, IL
Pretty cool place for an after work dinner and beers.
I stopped in here yesterday with a colleague after first heading to Berghoff and finding it totally jammed. I thought the service was perfectly fine, not awesome but not unfriendly or slow.
I had bangers and mash, pretty much my standard British pub meal and was not disappointed. The bangers were authentic and yummy, mash and beans were as expected. My London Porters Jack & Cokes were fine too, although my last Jack & Coke was kind of a stingy pour.
I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to stop by here but if you're in the Loop and want a solid, affordable meal and a couple of pints, E&C is worth a try. -

Pretty good food fast which is what I want in a lunch spot downtown. I think the service gets knocked a little too hard here, they are crushed at lunch and dinner. There are a ton of options on the menu and they are all solid. If you need a good lunch spot or quick dinner this place is a great option downtown.

Review from Heidi R.
Elephant & Castle is a great place for some drinks and food. We usually come here for happy hour after work with a bunch of gals. Come early though because the place gets crowded! They never have any specials and their menus aren't very cheap so be prepared to hit up the ATM before you go. We usually get a bottle of white wine which usually turns into about 3-4 bottles. We always load up on the apps... last time we got the you pick 3 apps for $17. We ordered chicken tenders, pub pretzels with mustard, potato skins, eggrolls and spinach dip. We usually order double of our favorites - which definitely are the pretzels, chicken tenders and spinach dip. The food is pretty good and the chicken comes in a basket with some really good crispy chips. Great bar, great service and great location. My friends love it because it's really close to the train stations for when they need to get back home after a good buzz.

First off, any place that displays a framed b/w photo of David Bowie is ok with me.
I've been here several times and their consistency is great for a chain restaurant. I have had the fish and chips as well as the Shepherd's Pie (which, if you ask a Brit or so I've heard, is actually "Cottage Pie") and both have been good and reasonably priced. Last night we went with friends at 9pm on a Thursday (wanting a relatively inexpensive place) and E&C was packed and albeit a bit loud with some overserved yuppies, but we were seated immediately. The waitress was friendly and my husband ordered the onion soup which was outstanding and it arrived at our table in - seriously - three minutes after he ordered it. Everyone's food was good and the waitress was friendly. A successful night. I also love the rich decor here, but I'm a sucker for the old world look. -

Meatloaf was a little salty and too sweet, but hey lets face it, that makes it all the more better. The tomato soup was a couple steps above Campbell's.
E&C seems to have much better food than they did 15 years ago.
Half star for having jalapeño peppers and a Brit pub. Wait, no half stars on yelp...
Portions are out of control big. Bring an appetite. Busy lunch crowd which is a good sign with plenty of nearby competition. -

Maybe you know me. Maybe we've had sexual intercourse. Maybe you think you're going to predict the general tone of this review.
Let me guess, it goes something like "Oh, Justin doesn't like some halfassed British, banker-crowded pub thing in Chicago's Loop district because he's all about individualism and shitty indie rock and molecular gastronomy and Scientific American magazine and shit. He's too cool for school and so he doesn't like Elephant & Castle."
Well guess what, jilted lover? YOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG! AGAIN! That's why I didn't want to date you! Not because you cry after sex (we all do) or because you put the toilet paper on the back of the toilet instead of on the roll even though you know damned well you were just s(h)itting there all of eight inches from the thing. No, it's because you think a couple of nights of poppers and Kahlua and a week or two of dry humping in the back of your Saab means you know how I think.
You don't. You don't know how I think. So there.
I actually kind of LIKE Elephant & Castle. What do you think of that? It's a relatively dim place for me to duck into on my Sunday lunch break and write in my diary -I mean notebook- and have a beer. Yeah, I have a beer on my lunch break, so what? Why are you so controlling? What do you want from me?
Oh, now I'm an alcoholic, that's great. That's so like you. Maybe it takes a couple shots of whiskey before you look pretty enough to f-
... no. You know what? You always do this. This isn't about you, okay? It's about Elephant & Castle.
See, I understand that the Loop is full of ill-fitting suits and severe ponytails and screaming teenage black girls and dipshit investment bankers who think 120 hour workweeks are okay if you own a Lexus. I understand that I have to deal with these people if I want a semi-stable full time job. I actually even enjoy being down here in a nice tie and slacks because it beats being in Wicker Park in a pair of jeans being critiqued by every dipshit in a Kanye scarf and 59fifty or leggings-as-pants and gold hoop earrings.
Elephant & Castle is conveniently located a block south of my workplace. They have passable French onion soup, a good selection of Englishy ales and stouts and at least one waitress I think is a stone cold fox and I want to sex up.
So why one star, right? If not the yuppies and the location?
I will tell you, blanket-hog. It's because the French onion soup, which is ... meh ... is by far the best thing I have ever eaten at this overpriced piece of shit pub thing. After spending at least $12 a pop on various entrees and specials (specials! things that are special!) I can say with no dishonesty that Elephant and Castle serves the most inedible shit on the planet under the guise of food. I hate everything they serve. It tastes like garbage. Not like English food, which is ... not the best thing, but decent, but just like goddamned garbage. If I'm going to drop $25 for a bowl of soup and some chicken curry (and a tip for that stone. cold. fox.) I expect something I might actually want a box for.
Do I expect haute cuisine from a knockoff pub for bankers? No.
Do I expect to be able to eat the bread that comes with my meal without wincing? Yes, even at the worst diner on earth.
Elephant & Castle is a boring, dimly-lit playpen for guys in bad suits and the administrative assistants they're screwing around on their wives with. This is fogivable. Serving me four terrible "specials" is not.
No more business for you, E&C.
Or you, little Ms. Know-It-All.
... but for you, Elephant & Castle waitress, I have so much extra business it's not even funny. I have like, four and a half inches of business for you.
Mm hm. That's right. Doo be doo be doo ... -
Review from Dee W.
This place had fantastic soup! We started off sharing the three pub favorites - the steak and crostini, baked potato skins, and fish bits - delish! between the four of us girls, we had an absolute blast. We ordered the onion soup which was just perfect - who would have guessed - the perfect combination of mozzarella and parmesean! I ordered the nachos - BEWARE - those with small stomachs need not order!
The nachos were twice as big as I'm used to a huge platter of them. It was an enormous concoction of nachos (different flavored ones) covered in cheese, olives, jalapenos, grilled chicken (or spicy beef), green onions, dipping sauces of salsa, guac, and sour cream..mmm!Listed in: Nachos

After coming to this location several times to visit with out of town guests I know what to expect:
-friendly hostess
-who then leaves and then you never see a waiter/tress for about 15 minutes
-takes drink orders and back in another 15 usually to let you know they're out of something
-then takes food order which for what the food is it's a bit too long to wait 30 minutes for that
-promptly served bill to get the heck outta there even though you're still drinking
-smile on the way out!
The service is a lot to be desired, but the food is decent (decent, not "fantastic"). My likes vs. dislkes:
LIKE
Shepard's Pie
Guinness Meatloaf
Pretzels
DISLIKE
Spinach dip (too cream cheesey)
Chicken Pot Pie (flavorless and watery under that flakey crust)
All in all it has some staples and a good comfy place to catch up. Just don't be in a hurry!Listed in: I Hate Lesbian Bars

Three blocks east of work, so we decided it would be an adventurous stop on our part to start happy hour there. The sharing plates are tasty and reasonably priced, as is the beer.
The "but..." factor? I think my coworker said it best when we walked in:
"um, is it just me or does it smell like old people in here?"
no offense to the geriatric, but he was right.
Again, close to a ton of places in the loop (across from the Bank of America building -easy ATM access!). Fun crowd. But that smell...Listed in: I am no Suzy Homemaker.

The decor is nice, don't get me wrong, but that's what you're paying for. The decor.
This place is listed as a "$$" here, and that is probably a very shallow-end estimate. A glass of Fuller's London Pride ($6.50), and a glass of wine ($9.00) set me back nearly 16 dollars. The evening was further proof that good company and good conversation is what really matters, and can make a great time in the a less-than-great place. I don't consider myself a cheapskate in the slightest, but $16 for two drinks is a little steep if there's no liquor or food involved.
The service was hit or miss. The greeter was attentive and got us seated right away, and a server was right with us, but on a slow night, I shouldn't have to wait 20 minutes after I get the bill before I pay, and I shouldn't have to walk halfway across the place just to find a server.
A slow night means an opportunity to give great service to the people who are there, not to stand around and slack off for everyone. -

Does anyone else have that craving of a certain something when it starts to transition from summer to fall/winter? Apple Cider? Hot Cocoa? Cinnamon Donuts? Well mine, ladies & gentleman, is baked french onion soup. Judge me if you will, but nothing brings me more delight than sucking down some good ol' fashioned soup. Mmm..the melted cheese, the crouton, the onions, the beef broth. Omg, I'm drooling & it's fashion week...this does not look good.
Anyway, Elephant & Castle serves up a mean french onion soup. It seemed to have just the right amount of everything & was just warm enough to satisfy my need for warmth & taste. I give it two thumbs up. I do know that this recipe isn't hard to make, but when I'm in the mood for something & get it exactly the way I want it (this is getting kind of weird...) nothing makes me happier.
So hat's off to you E&C for making a mean french onion soup & being so close to my office! I will surely see you again....and that cute waiter! -

I have been to this location twice..once for a private party downstairs and once for after work drinks. Cheesy holiday decorations aside, this place is a pretty safe bet if you're in the area. The private party was done very well and they appetizers were super yummy.
They were also able to accommodate a party of 6 with no problem on a weeknight and they have a good selection of beer available. I tried the chicken quesadillas which weren't the best I've ever eaten but they did the job after two quick drinks.
I would definitely stop back in here to try some of their other menu items. -

I'm giving this place "tres estrellas." The food here is typical of any pub, its also fairly priced. I think it's kind of reminiscent of what Bennigan's used to serve (Bennigan's, HAHA...oh snap kid!!!).
I guess I just have mixed feelings. Their beer selection is of decent proportion and their service is pretty on-point. I believe I would probably have to come here more often than so to get a better feel of the place.
However, I enjoy the decor and the accompanying environment. It's comfortable and cozy so I can understand why patrons praise this drinking establishment highly.
