My wife and myself were craving some fish and chips (as we tend to do quite often) and since this place was not too far from her office we decided to meander down here for a bite. The place was packed as I figured that it would be but we were able to get a seat right away.
This is going to sound pathetic but the best part of our experience was the people watching at the bar. Anyway, the food was OK and the service was OK. It was nothing to write home about but it was decent and it did the trick as it needed to. No complaints from me on either of those two fronts.
However...
I do have one complaint. The area we were seated in had a very narrow aisle in between two tables. Nine out of every 10 people that passed our table bumped me in the shoulder with their hips as there was not much room to walk through. About 3/4 of the way through the meal, this REALLY started to annoy the hell out of me.
Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't realize Elephant & Castle was pub speak for douche bag central!
The loop is seriously lacking decent places for drink and/or food....why is everything like Cactus or Townhouse? Mediocre food and snotty service surrounded by former frat boys in their Men's Warehouse suites and Kenneth Cole loafers. Uhg....I'm so not into this scene...
But allow me to stop beating around the bush and tell you how I really feel!
I was in Chicago on business 3 years ago, and never forgot the beer battered fish and chips at Elephant & Castle. If you like good flavor in your beer batter, and for the fry to be crispy - you'd love it.
In town again, I had the opportunity to go for lunch today. I decided to try something new, rather than re-live the fish and chips, and the salmon burger caught my eye.
It was great. The bun was nice and soft with a good whole grain flavor. The salmon filet was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and the sauces used paired with it very well.
After coming to this location several times to visit with out of town guests I know what to expect:
-friendly hostess
-who then leaves and then you never see a waiter/tress for about 15 minutes
-takes drink orders and back in another 15 usually to let you know they're out of something
-then takes food order which for what the food is it's a bit too long to wait 30 minutes for that
-promptly served bill to get the heck outta there even though you're still drinking
-smile on the way out!
The service is a lot to be desired, but the food is decent (decent, not "fantastic"). My likes vs. dislkes:
LIKE
Shepard's Pie
Guinness Meatloaf
Pretzels
DISLIKE
Spinach dip (too cream cheesey)
Chicken Pot Pie (flavorless and watery under that flakey crust)
All in all it has some staples and a good comfy place to catch up. Just don't be in a hurry!
Pretty good, overall. Decent food, I recommend the lamb curry. If you like British pub food and British beer, and don't mind spending a little more than it's worth, go here.
Service can be spotty, though.
We had: the postickers - very good
Potato skins - mediocre. Only 4 to aserving and on the small side and not flavorful
Lamb curry - yummy. It had good spice and a fair amount of lamb, jasmine rice was flavorful but clumpy as if it had been sitting out for a while. The same curry is used for the chicken and vegetable dishes as well.
Jameson chicken - delicious with a generous portion or green beans and enough mashed potatoes.
Baseball was on the TV and the noise level was made conversation easy.
when jury duty calls, lunch becomes a 2 drink affair.
enter elephant & castle. met up with a friend, ordered a basil hayden on the rocks($8), miller lite($4), and the lunch special- 1/2 wrap of the day, small caesar salad, and a cup o' soup($8.99).
the drinks came right out, the food was fresh and tasty, and our waitress was hot and flirting it up, so i left her my number. i'll update if she calls.
Was walking by last night and decided to pop in for drinks. Took the bartender somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes to acknowledge us. Ordered our drinks, then another, then another, than a 4th when the person I'm with says "hey I don't think there's much alcohol in these." I stop and think, cuz I wasn't really paying attention due enjoying my company. I'm like dammit, you're right. I should definately have somewhat of a buzz on halfway through my 4th rum and coke, but I was still dead sober I swear.
Watered down booze is an absolute deal breaker for me. I don't even care if Gordon Ramsey is the Chef, you don't do that to your customers. Never going back.
I don't know why I keep coming back here. Probably because it is convienent and fast and always right in your face when you're walking around the loop. I need to stop though, there are so many other great places out there. Now I'm seriously beginning to wonder why I keep going back, does their average food have brainwashing powers?
But in all seriousness, all Elephant and Castles are medicore at best. I've never had outstanding service or a food experience to write home about. They do have a large menu with some great options. I love the soft pretzels and their veggie burger is above par compared to similar bar restaurants. And the prices are out of this world and are consistent, as well as drink prices.
I have yet to go at nighttime (only been here for lunch and early dinner) So I can't judge on the nighttime atmosphere, crowd etc. But I'd suggest trying something more local and unique.
I came here for a free social event, and was not too impressed. The food is tasty but greasy. Beers are what you'd find at your conventional bar.
Atmosphere is bustling, service is decent, decor is warm with lots of wood. Overall: not bad.
Btw, finding parking around here is a mess.
Not bad, was strolling the loop again with friends and looking for a place to go on a sunday night/weeknight and like always everything was pretty much closed or closing, however this place was still open, including the kitchen, I decided to pass on the food and just go with some brews.
This place isn't bad, but with so many better pubs in the city you can skip it. Geared toward tourists the food is a little gimmicky and trying too hard to be authentic. The Emerald Loop is across the street and much better.
I haven't been to this chain since the 80s and thought they had all closed down for some reason.
In any event, the deserve 5*s for not only returning pretzels to normalcy (i.e. with salt) but for raising the bar to awesome new heights.
The deep-fried pretzel!
It is so fantastic. I can't stop thinking of it. And you get three. So good!
Came here unexpectedly on Easter Sunday when.... nothing else in the entire Loop besides Mrs. Field's Cookies was open.
Tried expensive fish & chips as well as expensive meatloaf - both just barely what you'd say were "okay."
Elephant & Castle, thank you for your services when all else closed the doors on us..... but I will probably never return.
I would have given this place four stars, except for the fact that we had a server who literally only came by the table to bring us our food and from whom we had to request more water/iced tea. Disappointing.
That being said, the fish and chips were really delightful. You can choose between cod or halibut depending on your personal preference. We went for the cod. Also sampled the calamari and that was even more impressive - the aioli was an excellent choice of dip.
The interior was warm, the chairs comfortable. Came here because we were walking past and it happened to look good so, it satisfied my expectations in that sense.
Couple of months ago we stopped by this establishment to see if we could have a get together after our wedding rehearsal dinner. We asked the bartender if they could handle us bringing 20-30 people on a Friday night and he told us "easily." We told all our friends and family from out of town to meet us there and it seemed like a great idea. What we experienced was about as unprofessional as I have ever seen.
Look, I get the bar scene, waiters need to do their job and when people are in the way you need them to move. Our guests were sober, polite and ready to move out of the way when needed. However these guys handled our guests like thugs. Waiters were screaming, pushing and even swearing (yes) swearing at our guests. I personally witnessed my father-in-law and fiancé pushed in the back by their staff. I asked the waiter to please stop yelling and pushing people he yelled back "then get the f out of the way".
Many people were offended and left. When I talked to the manager about how rude one particular waiter was he said he would talk to him. The manager just smiled and gave him a pat on the back, as if to cool down. The waiter seemed like he could care less. It was apparent Elephant and Castle didn't really care about how much money we were spending. They just wanted us to leave.
What was supposed to be an ending to a great night turned into a frustrating and embarrassing affair.
What I love about E&C is their consistency. No matter if you are in San Francisco or Chicago you know exactly what you are getting. I highly recommend the Onion Soup!!! I also had a steak sandwich. It was cooked medium, as requested and tasted great. The service was exceptional with multiple drink refills etc. The only complaint is that the fries didn't come with the sandwich. In a place like this, I'd expect the fries to pretty much be automatically included, so read the menu carefully.
Went here after STYLECHICAGO event. I love booths so that was a plus. We all ordered a beer (four of us) and then we decided to do apps...we got spinach artichoke dip (full size), then you could do like small plates. We got sweet potato fries, veggie spring rolls, pretzels, pot stickers, some other chicken thing, and something else I cant remember. It was pretty standard bar food. The waiter was consistently checking on us, which was nice. We each only ended up paying $16 and something for food and drink...it was a cheapy, bar place. Just what we were looking for.
It's not much beyond a good place to meet up with co-workers for a few drinks.
After a few drinks, the food might taste pretty good.
Meh...get a few drinks head somewhere better for dinner!
Maybe you know me. Maybe we've had sexual intercourse. Maybe you think you're going to predict the general tone of this review.
Let me guess, it goes something like "Oh, Justin doesn't like some halfassed British, banker-crowded pub thing in Chicago's Loop district because he's all about individualism and shitty indie rock and molecular gastronomy and Scientific American magazine and shit. He's too cool for school and so he doesn't like Elephant & Castle."
Well guess what, jilted lover? YOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG! AGAIN! That's why I didn't want to date you! Not because you cry after sex (we all do) or because you put the toilet paper on the back of the toilet instead of on the roll even though you know damned well you were just s(h)itting there all of eight inches from the thing. No, it's because you think a couple of nights of poppers and Kahlua and a week or two of dry humping in the back of your Saab means you know how I think.
You don't. You don't know how I think. So there.
I actually kind of LIKE Elephant & Castle. What do you think of that? It's a relatively dim place for me to duck into on my Sunday lunch break and write in my diary -I mean notebook- and have a beer. Yeah, I have a beer on my lunch break, so what? Why are you so controlling? What do you want from me?
Oh, now I'm an alcoholic, that's great. That's so like you. Maybe it takes a couple shots of whiskey before you look pretty enough to f-
... no. You know what? You always do this. This isn't about you, okay? It's about Elephant & Castle.
See, I understand that the Loop is full of ill-fitting suits and severe ponytails and screaming teenage black girls and dipshit investment bankers who think 120 hour workweeks are okay if you own a Lexus. I understand that I have to deal with these people if I want a semi-stable full time job. I actually even enjoy being down here in a nice tie and slacks because it beats being in Wicker Park in a pair of jeans being critiqued by every dipshit in a Kanye scarf and 59fifty or leggings-as-pants and gold hoop earrings.
Elephant & Castle is conveniently located a block south of my workplace. They have passable French onion soup, a good selection of Englishy ales and stouts and at least one waitress I think is a stone cold fox and I want to sex up.
So why one star, right? If not the yuppies and the location?
I will tell you, blanket-hog. It's because the French onion soup, which is ... meh ... is by far the best thing I have ever eaten at this overpriced piece of shit pub thing. After spending at least $12 a pop on various entrees and specials (specials! things that are special!) I can say with no dishonesty that Elephant and Castle serves the most inedible shit on the planet under the guise of food. I hate everything they serve. It tastes like garbage. Not like English food, which is ... not the best thing, but decent, but just like goddamned garbage. If I'm going to drop $25 for a bowl of soup and some chicken curry (and a tip for that stone. cold. fox.) I expect something I might actually want a box for.
Do I expect haute cuisine from a knockoff pub for bankers? No.
Do I expect to be able to eat the bread that comes with my meal without wincing? Yes, even at the worst diner on earth.
Elephant & Castle is a boring, dimly-lit playpen for guys in bad suits and the administrative assistants they're screwing around on their wives with. This is fogivable. Serving me four terrible "specials" is not.
No more business for you, E&C.
Or you, little Ms. Know-It-All.
... but for you, Elephant & Castle waitress, I have so much extra business it's not even funny. I have like, four and a half inches of business for you.
Mm hm. That's right. Doo be doo be doo ...
I like the food at Elephant & Castle, it's consistent and the same no matter where you go. When I was in D.C., their Guiness Meatloaf and Green Beans hit the spot after a day of tourist trodding! Another favorite of mine is the Chicken Pot Pie. Most of their fare is heavy, filling, and probably enough for two meals! I think there's one Vegetarian-friendly item on the menu, a Veggie Burger; and who knows, it's probably been sitting in the freezer for six months waiting for that call to the Big Leagues! (Don't be the one to make that call!)
My friend and I like to meet up at this location after work. It's full of Board of Trade types talking loudly about how much money they made on futures and indices and all that crap. I usually wait for my friend outside, so as to not have to sit at the bar to hear all their yapping. Still, it's a good place to meet for a drink after work. They pour a mean Guiness! And their selection of beers from Great Britain is a nice change.
Yesterday seemed like the perfect day to try their Pub Onion Soup! After a huge lunch I had no stomach for anything larger at dinner. The crock bowl was absolutely covered in cheese and I thought I was going to have to cut it with a knife at one point! The broth is that typical beefy French Onion broth, filled with onions and big pieces of bread that actually didn't get soggy! My friend had the chicken pot pie, nice choice.
The food was great, but E&C has a service problem. Well, at least we did. It's a busy place, and our servers always seem to be overbooked. Yesterday it took forever for our server to bring the menu, come back with our drinks, come back to check on us after someone else dropped off our food. Since my friend had to get back to her job after an hour and a half, we had to flag another server down to ask for our check! This wasn't a seven-course meal but it took about that long. Our waiter looked like he had a rough night. Or a rough two weeks. I don't know what was up! He apologized every time he came around late, but that just doesn't cut it.
I'll be back to Elephant & Castle, it's good food for our cold Chicago winters! But I'll ask for a seat reassignment if we have to be served by Johnny Bender again.
Does anyone else have that craving of a certain something when it starts to transition from summer to fall/winter? Apple Cider? Hot Cocoa? Cinnamon Donuts? Well mine, ladies & gentleman, is baked french onion soup. Judge me if you will, but nothing brings me more delight than sucking down some good ol' fashioned soup. Mmm..the melted cheese, the crouton, the onions, the beef broth. Omg, I'm drooling & it's fashion week...this does not look good.
Anyway, Elephant & Castle serves up a mean french onion soup. It seemed to have just the right amount of everything & was just warm enough to satisfy my need for warmth & taste. I give it two thumbs up. I do know that this recipe isn't hard to make, but when I'm in the mood for something & get it exactly the way I want it (this is getting kind of weird...) nothing makes me happier.
So hat's off to you E&C for making a mean french onion soup & being so close to my office! I will surely see you again....and that cute waiter!
Unfortunately dragged here a lot b/c it's close to work. I think I would rather eat at McDonalds than E&C. Everything I've had is so blah... like Applebees-eske out of the freezer processed nast. The Shepards Pie once made my friend sick... and vomit! (changing 2 stars to 1 now that I remembered that)
Just go here to drink... resist the temptation to order food.
It's simple - avoid Elephant and Castle at all costs.
It's not far from where we live, so we gave it a try. They were not busy, but every table occupied was getting horrible service. Walking to the back looking for waitstaff was a waste of time. Occasionally someone walked by with someone else's food, threw out a quick apology, and disappeared. Then the food arrived - as boring as possible. Getting a check was an equally painful effort. Clearly understaffed and you can tell from the waitstaff that's the way it is regularly. Nothing appealing about the place other than location (nearby for Northwestern Hospitals staff). Avoid it.
on the first night of our chicago vacation, my boyfriend and i wound up here. we found it just from walking around the downtown area. we had great service sitting at the bar, and LOVED the nachos (except for the onions!!). i liked the laid-back environment, and the prices weren't outrageous.
It's a chain so you kind of know what you are getting into. I've only had appetizers there and they are good, not great. Reasonably priced at about $7 each.
Service has always been fine for me and the beers are yummy - Strongbow on tap. Beers are kind of pricey ($6 each) but they are also 20 ounce pints so I guess you get your money's worth.
It's not out of this world, but it's a fine option for an after work drink. And if you are looking for some men with your happy hour...they are all here. Seriously the man to woman ratio in this place was like 8 to 1.
This place is alright... if you're desperate.
I tried this place out for lunch and drinks with a big group and this place was awful. When we were first seated, there was this awful smell that smelled like dog crap.
Our waitress was really crabby. Like I said, I went with a big group (which meant automatic 18 percent tip added to the final bill) but yet the waitress was incredibly rude and bitchy. I noticed they had a chicken sandwich special on their board and when I asked questions about it she said that she didn't know what was in it and then made up some bull**** lie that they were all out of the special (I knew this was a lie because we came in when the place first opened). She then took forever to get us our drinks and food and never once did she apologize. Further, she was nice to every other table around us but awful to us.
This place is as lame as you can get. I definitely won't be returning anytime soon.
I had the chicken and chips and they tasted okay but were nothing special.
Three blocks east of work, so we decided it would be an adventurous stop on our part to start happy hour there. The sharing plates are tasty and reasonably priced, as is the beer.
The "but..." factor? I think my coworker said it best when we walked in:
"um, is it just me or does it smell like old people in here?"
no offense to the geriatric, but he was right.
Again, close to a ton of places in the loop (across from the Bank of America building -easy ATM access!). Fun crowd. But that smell...
Everything on the menu is pretty much meh, but they have the best sweet potato fries ever!
I could eat a whole basket.
Who am I kidding? I do eat a whole basket.
I almost wish I could say I wasn't a fan. This chain serves up a mix of Americanised gastropub English food and standard American fare.
The beer selection is partially British (well done on that) but whats with the shamrocks? HELLO, shamrocks are Irish!! That makes me mad. But, whatever.
Bottom line is that I'd rather eat here than in my own local pub back in England. For booze, its a tough call.
I guess the prices are pretty decent and the staff are friendly.
I wish my mothers' shepherds pie was as tasty as this places, but hey that's life.
As for the 'bang on' slogan?- leave that for the chavs and Londoners please.
I've only been here for company meetings so my experience E & C is limited.
With that in mind, I think Elephant and Castle has a great meeting facility. It's spacious, clean and the staff is very helpful and friendly. It's the perfect size for a small, yet not so small group.
The food for our particular gatherings were buffet style which was perfect. It was tasty and had me wanting seconds.
All in all, I definitely recommend Elephant and Castle for your next company gathering.
Good for getting bloated on beer
I'm not sure it's fair to review Elephant & Castle when I have never liked it for the food. Friends who I lament this to say "It's traditional British fare" Oh yeah? I've been to Britain and had some very good food. Is this the overly-greasy American version of what British food used to be or just an overly-greasy American offering? I'm not sure. There's grease-a-plenty, the meat is grey and so is everything else. Decidedly American fare is unimaginative and under-seasoned.
The room is small, as are the chairs, the bar is crowded [generally] ... at least the smoking ban went into effect.
The place can be fun if you're with a big group of people and all you're doing is drinking. But even the appetizers aren't all that appetizing even after a few pints of Guinness.
My advice is to avoid the kitchen, get there early and secure a table and keep the attention of your waiter and tell him/her to keep the pints coming.
Decent at most. Since there are hardly any casual sit down restaurants in the Loop for lunch, I have to say it is decent. I got a steak salad one time and it was gross. The whole salad was warm. Not appetizing at all. And I am NOT a picky eater in the slightest.
One time my roommate got quesadillas for lunch and paid $2 extra for guacamole and they literally brought her a thimble of it. She asked for more since she was paying extra and the waitress got really snippy with her. Said something along the lines of "UM avocados are expensive. I'll give you more this time but next time you come here you'll know better". We were pretty taken aback by this brazen hussy. Obviously avocados are expensive which is why you charge extra on your menu for them! Hopefully if you choose to go to this place you won't get stuck with this broad as a server.
Not the best Irish/English pub around. Depending on who you ask, they claim to be an Irish pub and sometimes they claim loyalty to England. Either way, they should just be considered another shitty Euro-knockoff pub in Chicago. The bartenders are kind-of cold. There is one bartender in particular that has long brown hair, and she just wont shut up. She will buddy up with one of the waiters and talk about her boyfriend, and what she had for lunch, and how her feet hurt, and what Jennifer Anisten is up to....shut up already!!! Why do I have to interrupt your lame conversation to ask for a beer? Damn...
Their food is not tasty at all. I had the Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, Guinness stew and most of their appetizers. The taste is bland, the stew was Dinty Moore and the appetizers are frozen TGIFriday knockoffs. very disappointing.
They have a lot of beer on tap which is the main reason I go here after work sometimes. Other than that, you are sh*t outta luck!
So for my first lunch out in the Loop we decided to go to Elephant and Castle because of a sandwich my coworker was craving. And I will forever tell her I will not return to this establishment no matter how strong the craving.
She wanted a cod cheese burger. Which is basically a slab of fish with cheese on a bun. Not so hard right? Well they took the damned thing off the menu so when she asked if they could special make it for her (they had all the ingredients they just didn't have it on the menu) our waitress said "Sure but it'll cost you". Oh and it did. Her fish sandwich and fries with a thimble of cole slaw was about $10.00
I ordered the chicken cesar and it was no good at all. There was no dressing on the salad. The chicken tasted bland and when I asked for a side of salad dressing they charged me extra for a thimble!
We got refills on our drinks only after we had been sitting there with nothing to drink for quite some time. And when we stopped her she acted like we were bothering her.
The other member of our party got the fish and chips and they smelled really good. So no complaints there.
The restaurant did fill up pretty quickly so if you do have more than a party of 2 I would suggest dining at around 11:30 if you can swing it. Actually I would suggest passing this place up and going over to the Potbelly's across the street. At least for $10.00 I know I can get a chocolate shake, sandwich and cookie!
I've been here once for a late night drink and it was pretty crowded. I don't think this place is anything special but it's nice because it's right in the loop.
I think the place is too big and it's almost wasted space. I don't know what else they could do with the place but I feel like it should be smaller. I didn't have any food so I'm not sure how good it is. The drinks are average but the service is pretty good.
About your average for a pub. I didn't realize at the time this was a chain, so I guess it's on par with what you might expect.
I actually spent a fair amount of time here since I was staying at Club Quarters next door/upstairs. So my experience here included one happy hour, one dinner, one breakfast and one late night. I guess you might say I was pleased to at least have this place adjacent to my hotel. Better than a lot of other options, that's for sure.
Great beer selection on tap. Decent enough menu offerings. Breakfast was standard, as was our late night dessert.
I would say this is a very popular place amongst locals as it was fairly crowded each time I was there.
Stopped by here two weeks ago for a few drinks and some appetizers with an old friend. Great bar for a happy hour in the loop. The bartenders were very friendly and talkative. Having 312 on tap is always nice and they had a good variety of appetizers to choose from. I went with the pick any three for something like 18 dollars. Not cheap but not horribly over priced either. Since it is connected to the neighboring Club Quarters I think they place actually stays rather crowded as the night rolls on (unlike most bars in the loop).
It's always pretty crowded in here for lunch, which is surprising considering that they only have kinda average bar food. It may be because they don't accept reservations, which is a pain.
Anyway, I've had some decent appetizers and burgers, but nothing really memorable. Recently I tried to switch it up a bit and ordered the fish and chips. I was disappointed-- the cod fillets are about 3/4 of an inch thick, but, about half of it was breading. Greasy, greasy, breading.
Next time I'll play it safe and stick with a burger.
Okay, I'm bumping up the average rating just a bit here...
After a lackluster attempt at a very rainy BluesFest, we headed to a different pub a few blocks away, only to learn they don't let you sit at a table if you're just ordering drinks. With full bellies and no desire to lie to waitstaff and wait forever, we left and headed here.
I used to pass this place on my way to work, but that was a few years go and I'd all but forgotten it existed until I went to London and saw their namesake stop. Who knew?! [Well, obviously they did -- I don't see how they could identify as Irish since they are CLEARLY trying to be English -- downright Londoners, really.]
My resolve to not eat was ruined when I saw the malt vinegar on every table. I ordered a side of chips and, though I had to specify that I wanted fries, not American chips, my craving for malt vinegar was more or less sated. Not the best chips ever, but more like the steak fries than those skinny ass things you see in other restaurants.
They also have a fair selection of English beer and cider, which is exciting. Good prices for the Loop, too -- especially for a "specialty" bar/restaurant.
The real winning point of this place was the music, though -- I walked in to Flight of the Conchords and left to Radiohead, with the most eclectic stuff thrown in between [Johnny Cash, Journey, Justin Timberlake, Ingrid Michaelson...]. According to the host [manager?], each employee brings in mixes that they rotate.
[They are, perhaps, a bit too into the double entendre of "bang", though.]
