A friend of mine and I finally had the Sunday off together so we decided to do something different. Segway tour in SF? Totally different! You have to book reservations prior to coming. We booked it for the 12:30PM tour. We got there a little early and checked in. They handed us waivers to look over and sign and all that good stuff. After we were done, we were lead to a room to watch a video with our group. Snooooozefest. When the video was over, we were told to put on our helmets and vests. The instructors were really outgoing and helpful. I was a little scared of getting on the segway because I'm not easily coordinated but it wasn't as hard as I imagined. I got used to it pretty quickly and Anthony was really patient with me=].

The overall tour was about 2-2.5 hrs. I normally come to the city for miscellaneous things such as shopping, clubbing or random eats but I've never actually went around the city so it was fun look and learn historical facts. It was really crowded going along the pier so be ready for tons of people staring, pointing and taking pictures of you haha. I had a lot of fun and would recommend this to everyone. I read about the night tour and I'm really interested in coming back.

MUST TRY LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!

I PROMISE I WON'T EVER LAUGH AT PPL ON SEGWAYS AGAIN! *sobs*

Usually playing tourist in the city is super fun. I really didn't mind wearing the helmet and the blue reflective vest. It was the experience, however, that left me feeling otherwise. BUT DON'T GET ME WRONG! The Electric Tour Company and its staff were really awesome! And if it wasn't for them, my experience would've been worse.

Overall, I was not prepared...mentally and physically. Operating a segway is harder than it looks. It's not fully automated and operates by bodyweight shifting. Much coordination is needed (which I do not have) and I'm stiff like a stick. Bad combo.

We had practice runs in the parking lot. Forward. Backward. Turns. Pretty simple and fun. Was expecting to go along the pier to enjoy the sunset, but instead we were out on the street going up and down the hills. UMMM...WE DIDN'T PRACTICE HILLS.

It was cold and dark. My head hurt from the wind. To make matters worse, segways are not allowed on the sidewalk. So we were on the street with all the traffic. Our guide insisted that we go 2 by 2, thus hogging up the street. (Just imagine the horrible traffic and steep hills in the North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf area. We were there.) Drivers honked and yelled at us, while pedestrians laughed at the spectacle. "HAHAHA. OMG...look at these ppl." UMMM...OMG, I CAN FRIGGIN HEAR YOU! Definitely did not help with the situation.

I don't want to say I'll never try this again since I like to be open mind about things. But next time, it'll only be under specific circumstances: Daytime. Warm weather. No hills. Not with cars.

We got certificates to take a tour on segways as a christmas present one year and finally had the chance and time to go. My husband and I had a great time! Pricing was not bad for a 3 hour tour.  Even though we both lived in the bay area our whole lives we really never got to see everything in SF as a tourist.  We both totally felt like tourist with our helmets and yellow vest but of course SAFETY FIRST!

Our tour guide was very funny and outgoing and made us enjoy the tour instead of being all monotone and boring.  It was exciting to be a tourist haha but damn I was defin sore the next day.  I am not sure if i was doing it all wrong or i was using my leggs to lean forward instead of my whole body? but damn my calves were hurting.  Overall I would do it again but maybe take the Sausilto Tour instead.

I love to travel and travel often, and usually take a city tour wherever I go.  This is by far the most fun tour I have EVER been on.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a hip guy and I know segways are dorky as hell.  But our mentality was: we're tourists, so why be embarrassed to look like a tourist?  Once you bypass that mental dorkiness element of a segway, you immediately come to the conclusion that you really want to own a segway and make it your mode of appartus wherever you go. LOL.

I booked this tour and brought along friends who were reluctant/hesistant to get on the dorky machines.  Also, we were all a little bit scared to manuever through the streets of san fran on this device.   Our fears quickly dissipated and we all concluded that this was the best $70 spent in the city, and we were seriously considering doing the advanced tour the following day.

The tour guide was great.  The tour was actually informative, and not just a novelty tour.   We spanned quite a distance.  And yes, it is a little physically strenuous on your legs (I think as a defense, newbies tend to stiffen the muscles, and this flexing can lead to a little soarness) - but no one was soar the next day.

I can't believe the reviewer below gave this one star.  I'm not easily impressed, (I live in los angeles and you know us los angelinos are NEVER impressed) but this star is worthy of AT LEAST 4 stars.  FYI: we had little old ladies on our tour, as well as teenagers, and ALL of us had no problems manuevering on the segway and nobody ate sh*t ;)

If you can get past the embarrassment of segwaying down the middle of a busy street with a safety vest and a lit up helmet, you'll have a blast.  The first time you step on the segway it'll feel a bit odd and mildly out of control.  But it soon starts to feel pretty intuitive and they give you a decent training session beforehand.  The first few minutes on the tour were pretty hard to balance as I was laughing so hard at how ridiculous we all looked, but I soon got it together.  I wish they would have warned us that one of the first things you do is go up and then down a very steep hill.  While this may sound fun, I was trying the techniques taught to us in the training, and my segway just kept going faster and faster as I maneuvered through my fellow riders and cars (you are in the busy aggressive traffic!)  I finally had to jump off for fear of having a terrible crash.  I am glad I got back on, though.  The rest of the tour was really fun and I quickly figured out how to brake going down the steep hills.  Here's a tip for you petite women:  If your feet are smaller, you need to be back farther on the feet pads, and sink your weight into your heels in order to brake down the SF hills.  Know this before you go and you won't have the terrifying experience I had!

Our tour guide was called, Lisa.  She was really relaxed, fun, and appropriately cheesy.  Since I'm a San Francisco local, I was mostly there to experience the segway and wasn't too concerned about the quality of the information you get on the tour.  I will admit I actually learned some silly San Francisco facts/legends, but mostly I would recommend going if you're curious about what it's like to ride a segway.  Definitely worth the $70 per person!

These things are hilarious. Obviously you look a complete tool in your helmet and jacket riding one but who cares. $70 for 3 hours is not bad. They're very easy to learn. Everyone in my group had the hang of them inside 30 mins. The tour itself is a bit rubbish, so if you think you're going to find out lots about SF think again. You don't get anywhere south of Washington Sq in North Beach on the basic tour, so as a resident of SF it wasn't really interesting. AS a tourist you might find it better. Might go back for the advanced tour which I hear is a bit more interesting.  The speed limiter is also a bit  annoying as it's hard to pick up much speed, but overall a fine way to spend 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon.

This one one of the last things I did in San Francisco before I moved and it couldn't have been more perfect.

First of all, the tour guide and staff were excellent. I'm not going to lie - I was actually really scared about getting on a Segway. I thought I wouldn't be able to do it and would have to be left behind.  The instructors really put me (and my mom) at ease. In the end, we all felt like professional segway riders!

The tour itself was really, really good. It was pretty fun being stared and laughed at. I pretty much could tell everyone who saw us probably wanted to try it out as well.  The weather was great and everyone seemed to have a terrific time - all smiles, all the time.

I would recommend this tour to anyone - young, old, adventurous or shy.

Ive never been on a Segway, always wanted to try.  My wife booked us on this to so something with my mom-in-law when she visited.  I'm thinking the riding will be cool, but I'll be bored with all the "Look, there's Alcatraz."

It was more riding than tour.  Sure you see a lot, and the guides tell you a lot of tidbits, but they were more obscure and interesting and I hadn't heard them before.  The guides are very good and helpful.  Mike was our main one, a sweet Georgia boy who sounded just like Owen Wilson.  Everyone picked up riding real fast, even my mother-in-law.  There was plenty of time to just zoom around and have fun too without being stuck following the herd.

I definitely had a blast and recommend it to anyone who wants to try a Segway.

We have done two tours with this company and they were both lots of fun.  We went on different routs both times and saw some back road parts of town.  There's a lot of trivia in San Francisco that the guides knew.  We are going to go back in October for the advanced tour!  :-)

Went on a company team building exercise with work (about a 25 person group).

I must say, I was a bit skeptical going into this. I always thought people who rode segways around town for personal transport are a bit ridiculous. That hasn't changed one bit actually. I will say now, however, that segways are awesome as a personal toy to joy ride (granted its a $5k toy).

Our large group arrived in the alley at Beach and Hyde and were immediately greeted by a horde of segways, helmets, and yellow vests. There were about 5-6 instructors going to every single person giving personal guidance to everyone to get familiar with their segways. Some instructors were better trained (and more funny) than others, but all instructors were able to communicate the basics.

There isn't too much to segways, so the best way to learn how to ride is to pick one up and try. Lucky for us, the instructors skipped the 45 minute instructional video and threw us on the segways for some immediate training.

Once the training was over, we embarked on about a 2hr journey through the marina and palace of fine arts area on our segways in 3-4 seven person groups (each group with an instructor). The instructor gave a cursory overview of San Francisco landmarks as we went by, but the main focus was having fun on segways. And let me tell you, with a group of seven wearing bright yellow vests, helmets, and riding segways through the streets of San Francisco, we were often photographed and video taped by tourists or pointed and laughed at by locals. But who cares, it was fun!

I would definitely recommend this for team building and group events. Was a lot of fun and relatively cheap (~$70 for 3 hrs including training). Not sure how it would work out for just a couples date or something since you need an instructor with you at all times, but it seems like that still could be fun and it would be a hek of a lot cheaper than that silly $50/hr go car deal.

I'd do it again! And I hate segways just a little bit less now.

One of the funnest weekends I've had in a while! How cool it was to be a tourist for the day in my own city. We did feel a little goofy in our bike helmets and neon yellow reflector vests, but it almost added to the experience- of pure silliness and fun!

The boyfriend and I took the Segway Tour of SF, which takes you through Fisherman's Wharf and the Marina. It starts out with a 45 min training session, so you get the hang of these handy dandy machines. People movers I like to call them. The tour guide was great! She had attitude and personality and really made what could've been a dull tour, really fun. She kept cracking jokes all day and kept us thoroughly entertained for the 2 hr duration of the tour. There were also plenty of little breaks where we could kinda go on our own on the Segway and play with the speeds and turns.

At the end they give you a little certificate indicating you've participated in a training course so that next time you can just go for it- or try their "advanced" tour which takes you down Lombard Street! The price is steep, but if I were a tourist in SF looking for a tour to take- I'd def do this one. It's really a pleasant little trip.

I'M STILL SMILING

I took the beginner tour of San Fran, Cannery Row, Little Italy, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. my first morning in San Fran.  I took the trolley up Hyde, grabbed breakfast at Starbucks and walked 50 ft to the segway warm-up alley by the Wells Fargo sign.  It's not the most obvious location so look for the flip sign on the street.

Alex was my guide. He's cute, funny and made the experience comfortable.  Everyone that works there is laid back and helpful.

I got the hang of the segway immediately, but others in my group needed a little more time.  After about 20 minutes, everyone was pretty much an expert.  Even if you are not the most coordinated, don't worry about it.  It's easy.  One rider wore her high heels and was one of the best.  (if you get cold easy, wear gloves)

Pro's: a pink skull and crossbones helmet, the need for speed appeased, fast access to hill country, a unique guided tour, fun!

Con's: it ends and you eventually have to go home :(

freakin' excellent!  this is, by far, one of the most fun things you can do in the usually-tourist-hell fisherman's wharf area.

you'll start out with an exceptionally cheesy instruction video (WARNING: SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH COULD RESULT FROM... blah, blah, blah).  you'll also sign the usual forms excusing the company from anything that results in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

then you'll don your stunningly stupid looking geek helmet... atrocious fluorescent green safety vest... and spend about 15 minutes learning how not to kill yourself on a segway (mercifully, out of the sight of the general public).  it's a heck of a lot easier than you might think.  after a few minutes on the thing, you'll be able to maneuver it within inches.  amazing.

afterwards, you'll look like a pack of asshat geeks as you make your way around the waterfront... and onwards towards washington park... then back east to the embarcadero... finally returning to where you started.

and ya know what?  you'll fucking love it.  the segway is hilariously fun to ride.  if these things didn't cost $6K, I'm sure a lot more people would be willing to look like geeks in exchange for the fun of riding one.

the crew at the electric tour company were professional yet fun (if you can ignore the cheesy "funny commentary we repeat with every tour" bit).

as far as "tours" go -- you really won't see much.  you'll get a bit of the waterfront... then a long-distance view of lombard street... and a 15 minute break to do the coffee-and-pee thing at washington park halfway through the experience.

it's not about seeing things though.  it's about having a lark as part of a pack of segways making a spectacle as they geek their way around the city... and, as that, it's a hilarious and worthwhile experience.  our party of three thoroughly enjoyed it.  I spent two hours grinning from ear-to-ear.

Even though I'm local and get into the city every week or two, this is one of those experiences that leaves one craving more the next day.

I can think of no way other than maybe in a helicopter that provides a better way to see the city.  Segways are more fun than you might think and so easy to learn.

Definitely ask for Alex be your guide. He has a really sharp wit and really wants you to have the time of your life while always insuring your safety.

The training session is great and they don't send you out with your guide until you are ready.

Everything was just perfect and our entire group had a blast! I can't remember our tour guides name, but I do remember that he was from San Diego and he had only been there for 3 months.  Anyhow, he made everyone in our group feel comfortable and was an excellent guide.  It was only $70 which I think is a fair price.  They provide the helmet, safety, segway and plenty of jokes! I can't wait to do the advanced tour on a nice night.  Just remember, look straight ahead and don't push the segway with your hands.  Thanks for the great memories Electric Tour Company!

This tour is a lot of fun. They do a great job in training you and making sure you're road ready. In no time it's totally intuitive.

The walkie-talkies work well for the tour guide to comment and give instructions about driving conditions.

They have great sense of humor and make it fun. The route may not be the most fascinating but it's lovely and interesting and surely beats the wharf tourist trap spots.

There are tons of looks of awe/suprise as people see a segway for the first time. That's fun.

I always forget how frickin' cold and windy SF can be..luckily they supply jackets for the layerly-challenged.

Fantastic way to try a Segway! Learned more fun facts about SF while having fun. It is tiring on the legs though for some reason. I'm obviously not walking but the balancing mechanism tires out the legs. Before getting there I was worried that others would laugh at me for not being able to operate the contraption but I ended up picking it up in a few minutes. The thing stands on its own once turned on! Pretty cool. Definitely worth the $70, if you divide it up for the 2 hour tour, training, and the cost of a Segway. I can't wait to go back and try the Advanced Tour.

I agree with the previous reviewer -- I did feel a little embarassed at times.  But what's surprising for me and my girlfriend is that while the Segway has taken out most of the work for you -- i.e., you don't have to walk -- it is definately not an easy tour to do at all.  By the end of the 3 hours, our legs were hurting so bad we wish we had a leg massager on hand.  Unfortunately we did not rent bikes, so maybe the next time when we come back to San Francisco, we will try renting bikes.

I don't say this lightly, but this tour blew my mind.  It is a wonderful way to try out a Segway. These machines will make you feel as though you were catapaulted into the 24th century.  They are simply amazing.  They do have some problems which prohibit mass adoption in their current form, but they make the perfect vehicle for a tour of the downtown area.  Esp. since you will be a "rock star" in the wharf area -- these things are the ultimate head-turners!  Don't worry about safety -- these guys are serious about safety and the Segway is trivially easy to use after the 15 minute training session.  The tour itself is good, with an informative narrative of downtown SF.
