Okay, so the restaurant is dodgy, the neighborhood is very dodgy, and the service is slow. You have a hard time sitting down to eat because the place is tiny and there is a line of people towering over you to get their food. They seem to be only open at lunch, and even then wait until 12pm to let people in.
With all that going against, it's easy to write Elaine's off and never step foot in there again... until you taste the food. Real Caribbean food served by real Caribbean people. Huge portions for cheap prices ($7.50 buys you a platter of meat, rice & peas, cabbage that's filled to the brim), and it tastes GREAT. Like, can't-talk-must-shovel-food-in mouth homer simpson style great. Jerk chicken, Ox tails, curried goat, meat pies- all here, all soft, tender, and spicy. You can wash it all down with tasty ginger beer (it's a soda) and carrot cake and walk out fully satisfied.
