I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I do like El Vaquero West. They have a nice, casual atmosphere, and the service is always prompt and very friendly. I've also eaten their takeout many times. I usually opt for the tacos, either beef or chicken, and they are always great. They can be a little heavy on the cheese sometimes, but it is mild, so I don't mind.
The chips and salsa are authentic and made fresh, which makes a big difference, especially with the salsa. Great neighborhood Mexican restaurant.
Palmyra is very lucky to have a Mexican restaurant, however EV is only OK.
They need a grill, for one thing, ambiance is strip mall.
Packed with locals, it can be really busy.
Update 9/1 : They are constantly improving the interior of the restaurant, now there are many more booths. Tonight, it wasn't that busy and we experienced really nice service. Their salsa seemed a lot better and the chips were thin, crispy and fresh. California burrito was OK. I ate it all, so I must have liked it, but I thought the cheese sauce tasted a little strange, and the enchilada sauce on the other side of the burrito was from a can. The carne asada was very tender, but browned in butter which is not my favorite. They have a huge menu. Still looking for a standout. Portions are gigantic
This is the best restaurant in the Palmyra area, hands down. I lived in Palmyra for one year, and tried almost every restaurant in the area. This is the one I came back to time and time again. This is the place I recommended and used to entertain guests. This is the one my return guests requested.
Lucky me to have had El Vaquero open just before I arrived in Virginia. Lucky everyone in the area for this family run business to thrive in such a close knit community.
El Vaquero has an extensive menu. If you have seen it in another Mexican restaurant it is probably here as well. I've had the chance to sample most of the menu, and can truly say that I have never been unhappy with my choice. The staff is happy to make recommendations and can alter things when needed.
I am moving from the area in a few weeks. This is the restaurant I will miss. These are the people I will miss. I encourage you to give this place a try. I hope that you will become a regular customer.
