This place is like a pop up book come to life!!!
First of all, the food was really good. This was the first time the boyfriend and I went and tried a restaurant in West Portal (where we have discovered we wanted to move to), and I must say I was quite satisfied.
This was also the first night our twosome became a threesome when I invited one of my employees out for what is becoming the traditional Thursday night in West Portal. (by threesome I don't mean anything sexual in case you dirty minded people think otherwise, plus it was a female and we are two gay guys).
The owner, who also played as host, was really awesome and allowed us to do our wait at the bar next door, and he came over to get us, instead of having to wait in the quaint waiting area.
The salsa you get with the chips is so good. I wish they would bottle it up because I would be there to buy some.
The three of us each got a mole dish, and it was quite tasty. The basic mole and the peanut mole was really good. And they have a green mole that was also good.
The food was awesome. Service, was so-so. They were nice, but I couldn't get a refill of water fast enough. I would go 5-10 minutes without a refill, plus they forgot about our pitcher of margaritas that we ordered.
Overall, will definitely go again.
Like a child coming out of the womb, I traveled further and further down a dark and dangerous canal until I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. That tunnel? The Muni entrance to West Portal. That light? El Toreador.
I know Papalote thinks they have the market on salsa in this town, but listen up my burrito-making friends... this place is comin' for ya. Really quickly. The salsa is flavorful and actually spicy. Not fake spicy where they say it is and you nod politely because you don't know how to say liar in Spanish (mentiroso). Actual spicy where you grab for your water after soaking the first chip entirely in salsa and realizing your mistake rather quickly.
Would it be weird if I told you I had a dream about the salsa last night? Oh. It would? Okay. Pretend I didn't mention it.
The pitcher of margaritas is also note-worthy. $15 for about 5 glasses. Although I'm usually a "on the rocks" kinda guy, I was feeling frisky and went with "frozen." Good choice on my part. Reason #829834 why I'm awesome.
The meals are not enormous... which is a good thing because you will fill up on chips and the soup you get with your order. I had the chimichangas per my friend's suggestion and was not disappointed. The chicken is extremely flavorful and I savored each bite.
Be warned: this place is very loud. Not in the decibel kind of way. In the "we used every bright paint color possible and hung everything you'd ever find at Ikea or a Thrift Store on the walls and ceiling" kind of way. It's way festive and so over-the-top that they actually pull it off. But if you're looking for somewhere to drown your sorrows and hate life, you probably shouldn't come here.
El Toreador is meant for champions. Go-getters. Lovers of delicious eats. Explorers of spicy salsa goodness.
I've eaten here many times and ate here again last night. However, after eating REAL Mexican food near my new home in Brentwood and in the Mission District, I have to say that El Toreador is just a pretender.
The is the only Mexican restaurant in West Portal and it's always packed. It's cutely decorated in bright colors and with lots of Mexican and not so Mexican adornments. The food, however, is not all that Mexican -- just what Americans think Mexican food should be. I had the cheese enchilada and chilie relleno combo. I could barely find my chilie relleno under the layer of queso and could hardly taste the difference between it and the cheese enchilada. The standard sides were flavored rice and refried beans. It was all "ok" but not authentically Mexican in any way.
The best part of the meal was the pitcher of sangria that I ordered. A full beer sized pitcher of wine, fruit juice, ice and fruit pieces. It costs $15 but a single glass costs $5.50, so the pitcher is the better deal. They also offer a margarita pitcher which is pretty good for he price too, even though it's mainly watered down tequila.
Not a place I'd go out of my way to eat, if I'm looking for Mexican food, but if you're in a mood for a little in the way of the "south of the border" and are in West Portal, you'll do ok her as long as you don't expect too much.
I used to come here more often with family when I was a kid. I was honestly never crazy about it, but I was always in awe of the ceiling and wall fixtures.
But we came here recently as a family, and I was very impressed with my dish! I got some sort of combo plate just because I was feenin' for some chile relleno and flautas. Delicioso! All of it.
This time it was my fam who wasn't as crazy about the food. Go figure.
This place is so crazy. It's the PERFECT restaurant to take your out of town friends to or even your "know everything" friends to because I can bet they haven't been here because West Portal probably isn't a cool enough scene for them. I love WP. In fact, I may move my store there so that's another great reason to check it out. I cannot possibly describe the interior of this place well enough but if you let 15 three year olds have their way with paint, Barbies, stickers, Mexican ephemera, knick knacks, roadsigns, chickens, and glue, then you are half way to getting a good visual. It's funny! The bathroom cracks me up because it was apparently decorated by the owner's French Bulldog who has slathered the walls with pics of himself. :)
The guacamole is out of this world. The drinks are good and when you are waiting for your table you can wait at the bar next door which is cool. The Empire theatre is right across the street (love the tiny Empire) and the chips never ever stop coming. You never have to ask for your server because they always come check on you and you get a lot of food for a really reasonable price. I heart Mexican food so much it's creepy and I really really like this place.
I'm a little confused about the few very negative reviews because they can't possibly be talking about this restaurant. Yes, the chip bowls are small, as they are in EVERY SINGLE MEXICAN RESTAURANT in the world, it's never been empty the 57 times I've been there, the salsa is so frickin NOT hot I have no idea what planet some reviewers are from (my 15 year old can chug it down easy), I've never had to ask for chips but maybe they got a bummer server, in which case, you say, "Can you make sure we don't run outta chips? We love them." and that usually solves the problem. As for flavor, it's not gourmet. It's not Colibri for sure, but it's good, basic, Mexican food. If you can't have fun at this place on date night, you need more alcohol or medication.
Do you know how awesome this place is? Its so Awesome they even have a VEGAN burrito, which, by the way, is delicious. As is their peach ice tea and their strawberry Margarita.
The look of the place is friggin amazing, I tell you what. With everything from paper mache owls hanging from the ceiling, to fun fact place mats, to chairs with different names on the back of them. I love this place, no really, I do.
It is often pretty busy, like a lot of places in West Portal, and parking can be a drag, but dude, it's worth it.
Love the food.
Love the complimentary mini carafe of spicy salsa.
Love the complimentary soup.
Love the pitchers of margaritas.
Love the lively ambiance.
Love the service.
Happy customer :)
Best Mexican food outside of "The Mission". Usually busy so expect to wait, if you have a group of 5 or more expect an even longer wait unless you come early like before 5:30. Food is great but observe the surcharges on the menu for substitutions and splitting. Splitting applies to having the kitchen split an order but not sharing an order and getting an extra plate!
This place has changed for the worse in the past few years. The meatball soup I once love is no longer on the menu. The menu is more and more like Chevy's. After the meal we had a few weeks ago, I don't think I'll ever come back. Everything was just meh. Any hole in the wall Mexican joint serves up better food than this. And at a much cheaper price.

I don't think the food here is bad. It's not great either. I've tried burrito, taco, enchilada,… Read more »
Admittedly we go there/order takeout so much they know my husband and myself and what we order without saying a word!
Very cheap and great tasting food--our favorites are the chicken burritos and their flautas.
Fast and convenient--we order out here once a week
YUM!
There's a reason there is always a line/wait to get a table---it is THAT good
One of the worst Mexican restaurants I've tried.
We got there around 6:30p for dinner. Clearly 1/2 the restaurant was still empty but the host still made us sign up and wait 5 minutes! That was stupid.
The chips they gave us were in a stingy little bowl, no bigger than a fist. The salsa was so hot beyond comprehension. We asked for a mild salsa and it took them almost 10 mins to get that for us. The chips were refilled only when asked.
I ordered the Taco and Tostado and my husband Enchilada. My dish was TASTELESS. From the chicken in the tacos to the Spanish rice - everything was bland. No flavor whatsoever.
Very disappointed with this restaurant - and don't want to let others fall into the same trap. To save money, we usually just go eat out on the Friday and Saturday nights - so I felt "cheated" by this meal. Feels like we just wasted our quota on this disappointing restaurant.

Review #123
Everytime my to girlfriend and i go to the movies across the street, we go El Toreador for a quick bit to eat... we always leave satified. Try there Magaritas!!!
Great little spot for mexican food if you are out in the West Portal/Sunset area. Since I've been living in the Sunset for 3 years now I have always been dissappointed by the lack of Mexican food in my neighborhood. Sure sure sure there is El Burrito Express. But sometimes I don't have cash and am in the mood to actually sit down and be served (oh yeah you got served, no thats bad chelsea, dont do that again) and for those times I'm defintely going to be going to El Toreador. I went for my first time a couple days ago. Thats right, I put on my big girl clothes and lost my Toreador cherry.
My roommate Jen S. raves about this place. But we all know she's a little nutty in her food likings (looooove you jen) so i had to try this place out myself. i got the Mission burrito with chicken, and I have to say WOW WOW WEE WOW. It was pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty good. We also ordered some nachos as an appetizers but next time me and the BF come here we will def skip it. They were delish but way too much food. I only ended up eating half of my burrito and took the rest to go. And you better believe I grinded on that left over burrito the next day. Mmmm left overs.
If you're in the area and have the urge for some good Mexican food, do yourself a favor and stop into El Toreador. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Thank you yelpers!!! This place is by my dentist and it looked so interesting inside I had to yelp it to see if the food was just as interesting...and IT IS. Spinach enchiladas, chicken breast with sesame, crab enchiladas (or was it quesadillas?)....all sounded soooo yummy but I went with the spinach enchiladas and was VERY satisfied!
At first, I thought it was a bit pricey for Mexican (I'm really used to hole in walls, authentic little places) but, the plates are HUGE and made me understand why it was a little pricier! Well worth the money, and I'd probably have paid more, too! My order came with whole black beans, rice, cheese, lettuce, and the enchiladas are topped with a green sauce. I was only able to stuff half the dish into my stomach and the rest was saved for dinner.
The server seemed a bit tired today, but tried his best to be friendly nevertheless, and since I'm empathetic towards those in customer service, I won't hold his tiredness against him. He still made sure our tortilla chip bowl never went empty. Still 5 stars for the food and service at this restaurant. Will definitely come back and try some other stuff (if I can tear myself away from the spinach enchiladas)!!! :)
Ill start his review off by saying the food wasnt even that bad. This one came down to service.
Menu: No substitutions for anything. If you want a substitution it adds $1.75 per substitution to your bill. Thats rediculous first of all. OK Next, this wasnt an issue for me personally, but it added to the sense that I as a customer was a pain in the ass to take care of. $5.75 charge for splitting an entree. Ok and $9 side of Guacamole? Thats crazy.
Service: We were seated for about 1minute when the waiter came up asking for our order. "We'll need some more time, please." ten minutes later he comes back to get our drink order and our dinner order. (this place is small, and I see no reason short of a waiter/waitress calling in sick that we cant be taken care of properly) OK next we place our order (it came out wrong) and didnt see our waiter again until he wanted his money. My drink went dry and he didnt check on us once. There is no reason for that.
Food: The food matched the price, it wasnt bad.
The food wasnt bad, but I definitly left with a bad taste in my mouth.
p.s. why is there placemats with bible verses on them?
This little neighborhood restaurant is one of my all time favorite Mexican Restaurants. Fabulous atmosphere, with the names on the chairs, and the little toys they put on the kids drinks, that they can play with. My daughter likes to collect them each time she visits. The employees are friendly and wonderful with the kids.
I strongly recommend the Spinach Enchilada, with the side of black beans. MMMM. You will need a to-go box because its quite a large meal!
If you are ever around West Portal, check out this little treasure.
I decided to give this restaurant 1 star for the Margaritas. I have been to this restaurant many times, and each time I leave I am sadly disappointed. Last night I returned for the last time. We went there for my sons first birthday dinner.
There were five of us (4 adults and 1 baby), and the host/owner crammed us in at a table for four, which is absolutely ridiculous being that they always serve their food on hot plates within inches of my son. The host/owner is ALWAYS RUDE, and clearly cares less about his customers.
I ordered chicken enchiladas and a strawberry margarita. The drink was good, food mediocre.
The waitress was nice enough. But, forgot my sons drink. When we asked he about it, she questioned us as if we never ordered it.
When we went to pay the bill, the rude host takes my card and proceeds to the back where he plays with his iphone and pencil for five minutes before he swipes the card and returns it to us.
All in all, a REALLY bad experience. I would prefer eating at FRESCA (yummy sangria), La Santaneca, Colibri, or La Taqueria - all have much better food and service.
The Spinich Enchilada!! The little chip bowl is never empty, water is never empty for long either hey are on it here! El Toreador has great service and has consistant yummyness!

2.5 stars really, but I rounded up because they serve mango nectar. yum!
I met up with some of my old co-workers for dinner here one day last month after two of them had seen a movie across the street. It's tiny little place that would not work very well for groups of more than four.
The food was mediocre. I had a shredded beef taco and a chicken enchilada. Nothing extraordinary in the flavor department, but not terrible. The service was friendly. Our server commented on how well-behaved my daughter was; she couldn't even tell there was a kid there. Ha! If it weren't for all the colorful things stuck all over the walls and ceiling for her to look at, she would have known Grace was there because it was past her bedtime and I could tell she was on the verge of a meltdown.
Anyway, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at El Toreador, but if you're in the area it's not a bad option.
From the colorful decor to the mini carafes of salsa, it's a real gem to the eye. However, the food was mediocre. I had the crispitos, which may have been a poor choice, as my friend's Mexican pizza looked 1000x better. However, they do have a beer club! I'm looking forward to this when I turn 21 next month. I'm guessing an update is due in the future, and hopefully a different dish & some beer will let me give El Toreador more stars.
I really don't get the crowds of people waiting for a table here at El Toreador. Is it the fact that it's the only Mexican restaurant in the general area of West Portal? I dunno. But everything here is very mediocre.
Came here for dinner awhile back, waited 15-20 minutes for a table on a Sunday, and it definitely wasn't worth it. The free chips and salsa was nice, I love a very spicy salsa, and this place definitely delivers on this little aspect.
Besides that, I wasn't very satisfied at all. I ordered the Chicken Chimichanga. The tortilla was fried too much, too crispy even for me to cut with my sharp knife. Moreover they covered my chimi with WAY TOO MUCH sour cream. The whole plate was practically swimming. This was a turn off, since my rice and my beans are now drowning in sour cream. *YUCK*
I ordered a blended strawberry margarita...when it came out it was in a tiny glass, and I could barely taste the alcohol, so I had to send it back. When it came back out to me, not only was it now TOO strong since they only poured a shot into it to make it stronger, but it was no longer blended, as it was now diluted. Nastiest margarita I ever had. I would take Chevy's Margaritas over this place any day!
2 Stars for your Chips and Salsa.
A group of coworkers and I sometimes come here on Tuesdays before heading off to Trivia Night at Joxer Daly's (right next door). The food here is not the best Mexican/Latin I have ever had, but when considering the portion sizes and price paid, it is quite a value. I suppose you could probably get a more authentic and cheaper meal in the Mission, but this is a nice spot.
The inside of the restaurant is very, and I mean VERY, colorful. It's quite a psychedelic experience. There are random posters, signs, objects, pictures, etc. posted all over the walls and ceiling. Look for the fat hen perched near the entrance. It looks so plump and happy, haha.
The only thing I ever order here are the chimichangas (I order chicken, but beef is available). It comes with beans, rice, two large chimichangas, and a small salad (tomatoes and lettuce). I love their sangria. They even put in green cherries! I'm sure it's just food coloring though.
I generally take MUNI here and walk from the West Portal station which is only half a block away. Parking is not bad on Tuesdays - there are plenty of meters on both sides of the street.
It doesn't completely suck, because they...
... allow you to wait in the bar next door until a table is available.
... are the only Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood.
... don't beat you up or touch you inappropriately.
BUT
Instead of eating here again, I'd rather...
... buy my own can of coke, because paying $2.50 for a soda AND each
refill is ridiculous.
... be ignored by people who care about me, instead of the manager
who obviously does not.
... split my nose open (like in grade school), and pose for my class
photo with a big, black stitches "moustache."
... receive another handwritten birthday card from my parents that
reads, "remember, the fastest way to poverty is being a single
mother."
Once upon a time, before I had ever eaten here, I met someone who told me he and his roommate used to hold the K at West Portal by distracting the driver everyday so he could pick up their to-go order and get back on, my interest was piqued. Another friend told me that their enchiladas were to die for...And so on with the recommendations for El Toreador.
This meant I had to try it soon or else, so I convinced the fiance to go with me. =D The decor alone is interesting. The service is awesome. They are super attentive and also give you tons of salsa and chips and hot tortillas with your meal.
El Toreador, how I love your Empalmadas and chips and salsa! Now My favorite meal there is their combination platter. If you order it to go, they are more then willing to give you chips, salsa and tortillas for the road.
The best thing about this place is the decor. Tons of colorful knicknacks and what some people might refer to as junk hanging from the ceiling and the walls. Brighly painted and just a fun place to be that always puts me in a good mood. As noted by other reviewers, the servers are pretty friendly. I've never dealt with a long wait, I guess probably because I usually go here for lunch.
The spinach enchiladas (vegetarian) are wonderful! A lot of the times when a restaurant tries to do something with spinach for vegetarians it ends up bland - not so here. The margaritas have always been good and pretty strong when I've been here.
Good for family or a casual date. I love the bright, eclectic decor masking every inch of space in this small 20 seater restaurant. The random fact place mats can be fun conversation starters too, unless you get the one with all the presidents (up to the 40th or 41st? I don't remember the number, but I do remember that they're all old white men). In that case try your luck and flip the mat over.
Every time I go I get the Mole Poblano. It's the best I've had and can't get it at many other restaurants. The perfect blend and balance of chiles and chocolate are superbly brought out in the aroma and taste. It's a party in my mouth. Not to mention, the chips and salsa are hot and fresh, and the complimentary soup with the fried dough ball that soaks up all the flavor is fantastic. The only thing I'd warn you about is that they charge extra for any substitutions.
Two words: ENCHILADAS VERDES. Delicious.
I love the kitch-tastic ambience and the never-ending beer menu.
I'll definitely be back!
I'm a fan of El Toreador. The food is great. The drinks are delicious and reasonably priced. I always get the enchiladas, tacos, and a pitcher of daiquiris!
Getting seated can be tricky. 95% of the time, I'm seated within 15 minutes. The other 5% of the time, the host forgets to check the bar, even though "BAR" is clearly written next to my name, and my name gets put at the end of the list :/
The service is great. Everyone is really friendly. In a slightly inebriated state of mind, I sent my half consumed drink back because I thought it was a virgin. It was not a problem at all - they gave me a new drink, free of charge and made it twice as strong.
Overall, a solid place to go for a good time.
this is a cute little restaurant on west portal
its a little cramp
but all the cute stuff in the restaurant make up for it
the place mats are interesting facts or about history
the food is fulfilling and good.
the soup is delicious
they give you chips and salsa, the salsa is a tad bit spicy
that one of my roommates started to not feel good
and had to get tums at walgreens
but she was a dramatic person.
the salsa tasted great
but if you dont like spicy
then don't eat it
the server are always nice
one downside is
if you want to share a plate with someone
it would cost you an extra 5$ or something.
never heard that before.
so its always best to get your own plate
The burritos here are godly.
I was wondering why I was paying for the exact same thing I could get at a Taqueria for cheaper until I took a bite.
Deee-lish-usss.
Go here. Even for only one time. Even if you aren't hungry and are just in the neighborhood.
Even if your dog asked you to take it for a walk.
Go here.
It's pretty much worth it.
My favorite place to eat in West Portal by far. I am there at least once a week without fail. Great food, great prices, great atmosphere! The interior is filled with various oddities and it is frankly just fun to be inside. Things to remember: it will get crowded and there will be a first come first serve list to make sure that you sign up on. Don't worry- you can go to the bar next door and they will come and get you(as long as you write "bar" next to your name.) It is usually a short wait so do not be discouraged by the group of people outside. Food can also be ordered to go which is a good option if you wish to eat at your quiet home instead of in the festive interior.
I suggest the Chicken mole- a large platter of food but it is very tasty.
The mission burrito is really good too if you want something more simple.
A must if you visit West Portal
This place is GOOOOOOD!!
Yeah it is decorated like my grandma's house, but thats the reason why I go there- it feels like home-aw. Oh, and also the food is really good... that soup that they serve you with the little bread bit floating around is SUPER good.. the burritos and enchilada plates are good too.. Bajeezles, everything is good there lol
I've been here a handful of times, and there are times when I wait about 10-15 mins and other times when they seat us right away-regardless, its worth it. Deeelicious !! =]
We've been back since my last scathing review.
I sure missed their spinach enchiladas.
The food is pretty yum, and the service has improved since then..
And they have Fischer beer from Alsace in chilled beer mugs.

If my husband were writing this review it would definately be 5 stars. I think he has been coming here since he was a teeny bopper!
Wait till he sees that I referred to him as a teeny bopper at one time haha!!
He raves about this place, I think the food is good, they sure give you alot of it, my favourite is the bean flavoured soup(least I think that is what it is) they give you before dinner, it is so yummy in the tummy especially if it is a cold day. What am I on about? We are in San Francisco and we never get cold weather! ha!!
The decor keeps me entertained and hubby sure loves that, so then he does not have to entertain me himself!
It is cool also when there are people waiting outside or next door in the irish pub having a swig of beer, they come out and fetch you..nice.
Lovely place, nice service, except for this one time the waitress we got did not serve us too well, if that had been my first time there I would not want to go back again but my husband had brought me there dozens of times we have both memorized all of the informative placemats. So I know it was a one off , usually the service is awesome. They do not even roll their eyes in front of us when my husband asks for his 6th basket of free chips.
He claims that their special salsa is the best ever. I have to take his word for it because my tongue, my stomach both agree and neither like spicy food, but I do like their green salsa.
It has been a family owned business for years and that is why I like to keep going with my husband.
I know he will need his EL Toreador fix soon, so I better strave myself before we go there to actually finish a plate of food.
The only resturant I think I always have to order a margarita with every meal. I have made it my own little tradition.
This is the best Mexican restaurant in the area if not the city! It's a small place with excellent food. We eat here once a month.
We came at 6pm and there was still a wait.
Most of the reviews are correct about this place. It's like mexican food in a restaurant. Much better and cheaper than Chevys.
My favorite is the enchillada. I'm usually not a huge fan, but since the reviews were all about the enchilladas, I told myself that I should try it. And it once again proves that yelpers are right. The enchilladas are super delicious!
I love the energy this place gives off, very colorful cozy restaurant. The servants are nice. The food takes a bit long but there are so many interesting things around you, it keeps you occupied.
The food is alright, but during lunchtime, the quesadilla and fish taco is good.
But for sure, I love the chips and their SALSA IS AWESOMEEE!!!!! and best of all it's FREE!
they have a great selection of different beers from different countries too.
(the bathroom is tiny)
The food at El Toreador can range from basic and unimaginative (but tasty) to some real gems that deserve a 5-star rating.
This weekend, before my wife ordered the crab enchiladas, we asked, "is this canned crab or...?" Much to our surprise, the very cultured and professional waiter replied, "actually, we are using Alaskan King Crab." Wow. We said, "it's a deal", the plate came, and we both loved the flavor of fresh crab served in a delicately prepared enchilada. Nothing too heavy or overpowering so that the fresh crab taste came through.
The best things about El Toreador?
(1) Service is impeccable
(2) The beer selection is amazing
I was pleasantly surprised by this place.
no its not the most authentic food and yes the boy described it as "mexican fridays" when describing the decor BUT for a place in west portal that is decently priced and the food is tasty, it works.
Tasty mango margarita not from a machine, blended by a human
I had the gorditas which were delicious
Portions are more than generous
beer selection is out of this world
its a little bit bright on the inside (both the lighting and decor)
but its a solid meal and the service was great!
Mmm, Mama that's tasty!
Came here after running some errands and everything about the meal was delicious-- from the chips and salsa, to the delicious sopa, to the spinach enchiladas and sauce decorating them.
The décor is a mess in the most polite way I can think to say. I don't recall ever seeing a restaurant like this in my Central American country, but you know someone had a blast throwing it all together!
El Toreador is definitely worth the trip from downtown.
