5 reviews for El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant & Cantina
Although I have not been to this place in a year or so(I live in San Diego now), I have to give this place a great review. It is by the best Mexican food you will find in Connecticut. The lunch specials are great with the buy one get one free, and they have THE best salsa EVER! If I ever go back to CT, I will definitely make sure to go here just to get the salsa. Also, the owner/manager is really nice. When my girlfriend and I used to go here everyday he would talk to us alot, and sometimes give us a good deal.
Oh, how I miss this place!
Anyway, yeah. Good food=good times! Go to El Sombrero!
El Sombrero has THE best Mexican food in CT HANDS DOWN!
My dad's friend mentioned this place to him like 8 years ago, and we finally decided to go as a family and we have been going back ever since. Now I have my boyfriend hooked on the food and drinks! As soon as your seated one of the waiters comes with a basket of home-made chips and fresh salsa! And the chips don't stop refilling until you leave. The service is always great and super fast. The Chimichangas and Numero Tres are the best on the menu! The mariachi are always entertaining especially after a few drinks. As far as drinks go their frozen margaritas are perfect! Every time we go we get at least 2 each with our meal and we come out with such a great buzz (Mango and Guava are the BEST)! El Sombrero really sets the bar high for all other places. On the Boarder and Puerto Vallarta do not even come close! El Sombrero always has coupons in the paper and their lunch specials are always buy one get one free, but I think it's for dine in only.
But seriously, try this place once and you'll love it!
I'm totally in Katie's boat here - awesome service, excellent food and nice mariachi. They have a bunch of veggie-friendly stuff too, which is awesome. The prices are reasonable and they'll accommodate large parties without any gruff.
Their jalapeo poppers warrant 6 stars (and their own paragraph) all on their own - my girlfriend and I will fight over the basket if there's an odd number! They're perfectly breaded (not that panko crap either), filled with cheddar (not cream cheese - and seriously, other Mexican restaurants, if you're reading this, cream cheese sucks in poppers) and have just enough of a bite. Only Jalapeo Heaven comes close to their poppers.
For the love of all things holy, don't even try to get near the place on Cinco de Mayo. This place isn't "authentic Mexican," but neither am I, so I'm ok with that.
I don't really know what to say about El Sombrero.
Sometimes it is great and sometimes it is down right awful.
Forget about anything labeled spicy on the menu. Its not. I asked for extra spicy and hot sauce on the side but its still not spicy. I did this on numerous occasions. The hot sauce they gave me was a bowl of soupy red stuff that was nowhere near hot. Granted I like painful fiery hot but the spice level here is a joke.
During the work week they have a great lunch special. Buy one get one on the entree's. Pretty cool seeing that most places don't even come close to that kind of a deal anymore.
The mole enchiladas are a good choice. Sometimes the meat can be too salty. The jalapeno poppers are awesome. A whole breaded jalapeno stuffed with cheese. They are not the nasty frozen ones. The salsa is full of cilantro and pretty good.
They have a mariachi band on the weekend which can be both fun and annoying at the same time.
Ok so basically El Sombrero is my favorite of the Americanized Mexican places but it definitely needs some work.
I went to El Sombrero with a date tonight, and it was quite enjoyable. I was in the mood for mexican, but I get tired of the chain places (like On The Border), so I was glad when he suggested this place.
It's a fair sized restaurant tucked into the corner of a plaza. I probably wouldn't have even noticed it if I hadn't heard other people say it was good. The restaurant is comprised of several small-ish rooms, as well as a seperate bar area. Tonight when we went, we got seated immediately, all the staff was really nice, and we got serenaded by 3 Mariachi singers. Very fun! They even took pictures with people (letting them hold the guitars, etc).
They had great salsa and chips that they put on the table when you get there (I was starving, so this made me very happy), and after ordering our food, it came to the table hot and delicious within 10 minutes. You can't be that!
I hear they have great Margaritas too, but since I was working later that night, I didn't partake. This is definitely a place I would go back to on a night off. Seems like it'd be a really fun place to go to with a group or to have a party.
