UPDATE: I've been frequenting El Ranchito again since their food is back up to par!

Their tacos have lots of meat and lots of cheese and their Flautas are AMAZING. If there's anything you're going to order here, order the flautas. It's probably the best thing on the menu.

If you like Tijuana-style carne asada street tacos, order the carne asada soft tacos with a side of guacamole. They're the closest thing to what you'll find in TJ.

Best flautas in San Diego. And coming from and living in San Diego and eating Mexican food for the past 20+ years that's a lot to say! No one I've ever brought here has ever been disappointed. Not gonna hype it up too much but come here and try it for yourself.

And...Bishers Butcher Shop is right next door for some of the best cuts in town.

This place is bomb!!!  Highly recommend!  They are famous for their shredded beef flautas...which are my favorite!  Sooooo good.  Best flautas I've ever had...hands down.  I've been coming to this place since highschool...and they've never failed me.  Anyone that I introduce this place to ends up loving it.  I've tried pretty much everything on their menu...

    1. Shredded beef flautas (don't get the chicken one)
    2. Shredded beef rolled tacos (make sure you ask for shredded beef because they also make ground beef ones)
    3. Burritos- chille relleno , california, carne asada, carnitas...tried them all and are super bomb!
    4. Tacos- carnitas, chile verde, fish and pollo asado are my faves.
    5. Soft tacos- cabeza, al pastor, carnitas...BOMB.
    6. Chile verde plate
    7. Rice and beans are delicious as well!
    8. Breakfast burrito- I personally haven't had this one, but my friend has and she claims it's awesome (she says to add bacon to it).

Some people might say this place is not "authentic" enough for them.  If you want authentic...go to Mexico.  As far as an awesome taco shop in Poway...this place has my vote!

Next to California burritos, chicken flautas are my second favorite taco shop specialty.  Too bad El Ranchito's cali burrito blow donkey balls but their flautas are the business.  I had no idea when I first ordered how big they were and I am super lucky that I only ordered three.  I could only finish two and gave the other to my daughter who is a picky eater might I add.  Extremely light and flaky, the flour tortillas must have been made at Ripley's Believe It or Not because these things are huge!  At $1.50 a pop it's not a bad deal either.

Been coming here for 20+ years.  The beef tacos use shredded beef and are fantastics.  The carnitas are the moistess carnitas i have ever had.  The beans are creamy and delicious.  My wife, who grew up eating "burros" in a small town in Arizona says the burrittos are as good here as anywhere.

"authentic Mexican food" --- no way. If you call frozen fish sticks and other frozen foods 'authentic' then you will love this place.
Our family of four ate at El Ranchito on Poway Rd. We didn't feel good by the time our food was 1/2 done and by the time we got home my son had a bathroom emergency due to his stomach ache. Speaking of bathrooms theirs needed serious attention. The health department really needs to look harder at this place.
Also, unless you eat a miniscule amount of food, you'll be paying more than $11 per person.
    I will never return.

This place has the BEST flautas! I've been a fan of mexican food for a long time but never had one before. It's a fluffy crispy fried rolled taco with sour cream and cheese on top. It tastes a lot better than it sounds. You have to get a small plate to get a mix of all the different salsa, onion, lime, and order the small side of chunky guacamole for 75 cents. Put a little salsa w guac on it and it's AMAZING. Don't try the flautas at other restaurants, its just not the same. If you never tried a flauta, u're missing out!

I've been eating here for at least 15 years now and there's a reason that I return. I love the flautas. I've never been able to find flautas anywhere else. I've introduced all of my friends to this place and every single person has said good things about it. The carnitas is really good. It can get a little bit salty sometimes, but I like salty. If you don't, then just make sure you've got a bit of guacamole on the side to balance. The carne asada is standard. It's a bit dry, but it's really hard to find carne asada that's juicy unless you get it from the butcher.

The hot sauce is probably the best I've ever had. It's almost like a salsa but it's definitely a hot sauce. The thing that bothers me most about hot sauce is that it's all hot and no flavor. This stuff has a lot of flavor and for those of you that are big into the spice, I regret to inform you that it is not the hottest sauce. There's also a chipotle salsa that's amazing and highly recommended. It's a recent addition to their salsas from what I remember (recent being a couple years). The agua frescas are the old style dispensers where it's always mixing, unlike the soda machine syrup dispensers.

The walls in this place have changed a lot over the years, but it has never been less friendly and accommodating. The place is quiet enough where you can talk with the person in front of you without raising your voice, the walls aren't decked out in a bunch of busy eyesores, and it's kept clean.

There's another location in the same city, which I find a bit amusing, and they're pretty much the same. Highly recommended and definitely a place to bring the family. Everything here is good. Even the burgers.

On our return trip to San Diego, this was #1 on my list, and it didn't disappoint.

The rice and beans were better than I remembered, and I even tried a few new things. At least one shredded beef flauta was always on my order, and they are just as good as I remember.

The carnitas, tacos al pastor, you-name-it, they were all good. If you're interested, just do what I did: get one of everything, and see what is your favorite.

The salsa bar wasn't as great as I remembered, but was still good, and I appreciate the fresh lime, cilantro, onion, and even the dried oregano to go with.

Wish I'd eaten here more - I miss it already.

This place is my absolute favorite taco shop EVER! They have the best rolled tacos, carne asada, flautas, beans, nachos, pollo asada...trust me EVERYTHING YOU EAT HERE IS AMAZING! I have been coming here since I was in middle school. When I lived in Poway I ate here at least twice a week, and make an effort when I am in Poway to stop off at one of their locations.
Trust me, eat here...as in a previous post, it doesn't matter what you order, you will not be disappointed.
I know that I love mexican food and I love taco shops and I love Paco's Taco's but this one taco shop will always be one of my comfort food stops and will always hold a dear place in my heart and belly. :-)

Shredded beef taco = best taco ever. I'm not a huge meat eater and that taco was so tasty it made me want to eat one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I didn't read all the earlier reviews so I missed the memo about the chunky guacamole. I ordered a side of chips and guacamole and was very surprised to see pistachio colored sour cream on the plate.

Even with that little mishap I'd definitely come back here the next time I'm in San Diego just for another one of their delicious tacos.

This place is the shiznit! Yes, I said "shiznit".
I've been coming to this taco shop for almost-- well, lets just say since i was a kid (around 20 years, dam im old).  Every time I leave this place telling someone that isn't listening to me "now thats as good as it gets".
They've set my standard for Mexican food high. It's hard to imagine a taqueria setting ones standards for every bite of mexican food they've taken, but el ranchito on poway road is just that good...
It doesn't matter what you order at this place, it'll be damn good ! As a matter of fact, this is one of the only restaurants that I'll order something that I don't know how to pronounce. I just know what ever it is made of and however it's pronounced, that  the food will be delicious.

This place has the best flautas!  So much flavor!  When you come here make sure you try it.  It's topped with sour cream and cheese.  Simple and delicious.

They also have these mini carne asada tacos.  These remind me of street tacos.  I can eat four of these.  So freakin good.

My brother and my friend Paul eat here and they say that it is the best mexican restaurant they've been to.  I have to agree...

The only thing that I was disappointed in was their rolled tacos.  It had ground beef not shredded beef.  Kind of a let down.  But if you come here definitely try the flautas and the carne asada tacos.

Wanting a taco and making inquiries I was told about "the taco shop" - a local favorite.  Being so close to the border I was expecting some really authentic treats, but knew that wasn't going to happen when I saw colby-jack on everything... and I mean EVERYTHING.   Still it was pretty good, Americanized Mexican food.  I didn't really care for the enchilada (yellow, gooey cheese and a mushy shell), but the flautas and tacos were OK.

Authentic, fast and scrumptious mexican food.  I am so glad that this is so close to my house, making it very convenient to go pick up some dinner whenever I am craving great mexican food.  The taco shop has set the standard for my mexican food, I feel like I have been spoiled because every time I have mexican food anywhere but this place I am not one bit satisfied.  Whenever my family comes here to eat they give us a plate of warm tortilla chips and an extra plate for salsa, spicy carrots and anything your heart desires from the salsa bar.

I have a few favorites that I like ordering when I am here, the first being pollo asado tacos which consist of grilled with the chicken is diced onions and cilantro (really tasty!) on either flour or corn tortillas.  The meat that I have eaten from here is always cooked to perfection.
My next favorite is a tostada, the fried tortilla on the bottom is nice and crisp and doesn't even taste as if it has been fried.  Also, make sure you ask for guacamole on top of your tostada, it just adds that extra flavor.
When I had a bigger appetite I used to be able to chow down a California burrito, but they are seriously the size of a brick.  If you haven't had one you must try it, essentially it is a carne asada burrito with french fries, cheese, guacamole and some lettuce.  This combination works really well together.

If you are feeling adventurous or would just like to try one of the drinks that they have behind the counter, I recommend trying the pina or the horchata, both are equally delicious.  If you like mexican desserts, the flan is pretty good too.  I almost forgot to mention the prices, they are ridiculously good $1.75 for a side of BOMB rice and $2.45 for pollo asado tacos can you say YAHOOO!  You will get your money's worth and be full when you leave.  Most of the employees have been working here for quite a long time, especially the cooks which I really like also they are super nice.

    Best damn Carnitas I've had.

I ordered them atop soft tacos and they came as these chunks of crispy seasoned exterior (almost chicharrone-like in texture and taste) and moist juicy porkily flavored interior...  Delicious.

The burritos have your choice of meat, sour cream/guac, and lettuce in them.  LETTUCE.  All lettuce does to a perfectly normal burrito is make it sag, wet, and not very delicious at all.

The menudo, which is a tomato-based cow stomach soup was a rather good value; though the stomach wasn't as fresh as it could've been.

I saw a regular order a plate, and for ~$8 that seemed to be enough to feed two.

Will definitely be back for their carnitas.

Who knew Poway had good Mexican food.

Took the suggestions on here and got the California burrito with chunky guac. They get -1 star because the guac was all in the middle. I had to chew my to get to it. It was a roller coaster ride of emotion.

Also tried one of the flautas. Not bad. Got it with chunky guac as well which may be the greatest style guac ever.

Note: This place was hard to find. For me anyway. Google gave me bunk directions and I was driving through the Vons shopping center looking for this and finally realized Google was talking about the other side of the street where the clothes mart was.

Great little taco shop, they're always full of customers and always busy -that should tell you something right off the bat. The food comes out pretty quickly, and they've got a good salsa bar as well. I've never seen less than 20 people inside at one time in the evening, and the seating layout makes that feel very spacious. The food is top knotch taco-shop goodness, and the proces aren't bad either. If they were open later, I'd hit this place far more often.

Ordered a Carne Asada burrito. Honestly, I have had much better burritos from lunch trucks.

My burrito was a sloppy hobo of a burrito. The carne asada was not very good - kind of dry and poorly seasoned. The burrito was so wet it was disintegrating. I eventually resorted to burrito surgery, slicing it lengthwise in order to harvest its meaty innards.

I asked for guacamole in my burrito, but it was merely slopped on the side; it tasted like something you would scoop out of a store bought container - hardly fresh.

The only redeeming thing was the fish taco I ordered. Not the best I have ever had, but not too shabby.

I live in Orange County and visit family in San Diego every month or so. Every time we come down to SD, we go out of the way to El Ranchito. I love their California Burrito so much that, when my friend (a food junkie) came to visit from STL, we drove all the way from Santa Ana (OC) to El Ranchito. Also, their chips and beans are good, which is very important to me.

I'm amazed by how many top-notch Mexican restaurants there are in the Poway area, and El Ranchito is no exception.  It's standard taco-shop fare, but it's a bit cleaner inside than most other places.  All the Yelp reviews mentioned the flautas, and everyone I saw order in the place was getting flautas, so I had to order one of those.  But the carne asada burrito also came highly recommended, so I ordered one of those as well.  Yeah, I'm dirty, but so what?

The flauta was pretty big and came in a crisp, fried tortilla that was kind of soft/chewy on the inside.  So good.  It was topped with tons of cheese and sour cream, which made it a bit messy to eat.  El Ranchito's red sauce is AWESOME and makes a great complement to the flauta.  I could chug that salsa straight it's so good.

The carne asada burrito was unique and one of the best I've had.  El Ranchito slices their carne thin and its got great charred flavor.  Then they put sour-cream guacamole and lettuce in your burrito.  I cut my burrito in half before I attempted to tear into it, because after the flauta I figured I wouldn't be able to eat the whole thing.  But after I ate that first half, the second half was calling my name like a crack pipe calling to Rick James.  I could not resist and devoured the second half as well.

I felt a bit sick afterwards, and my body was in a Mexican food induced coma-like state, but it was definitely worth it!

    RJR - ISSUE #8 - Special Edition
    ==========================

    I'm craving flautas...MMmmmmm, fluatas...

Hands down the best Mexican food outside of Mexico is without a doubt being grilled, fried, stuffed, roasted, or wrapped in San Diego with some Horchata on the side to wash it down with...and all those who are of  So Cal...know this to be true...

    **Pointing in every directions**

You all know who you all are...As soon as you return home to San Diego...you all attack your various favorite taquerias as soon as you land at Lindbergh airport or as you speed at 90 mph across the San Diego county line.

Now of course...each one of these places in San Diego has their own specialty that they excel at to have such loyal customers...

And like many SoCal natives, there's certain places that I'll go to when I'm in the mood for a California Burrito(carne asada)...and another near Sea World that makes the best California Chicken Burritos...another local joint for Carne Asada Fries...and one very special place for best flautas in the entire galaxy...

And today...we're talking about FLAUTAS...and I'm craving....Craving... CRavingGGgggg..,and Dammit, in most cases - I'm stuck up in the FRAKING bay! But not today - phuahahhahahahaaa...this entire week, I'm in SAN DIEGO BABY!

SO let's get on with the eats - This taco shop is found deep in valley of Poway - up in the North County Area.

Most standard flautas that I've come across seem to be similar to what is also known as rolled tacos...A corn tortilla rolled around a filling, such as beef, chicken, or cheese, into a thin cylinder and sometimes deep-fried. And they have a deep crunch with each bite.

The El Ranchito Taco Shop Flautas are corn tortillas stuffed with a savory filling, then deep-fried.  There beef-filled flauta is rich with a juicy, shredded beef and rolled up with melted Monterey jack cheese - and they can be served with a hefty portion of beans and yellow Spanish-style rice on the side

Now what makes these flautas so special - is the lightness of their wraps - and that is has a crisp bite (as oppose to a crunch) where the juicy tender beef melts into your mouth.

I've been keeping this little place a guarded secret for many years now...And I know that many of my friends are big fans of rolled tacos - and if you like rolled tacos, then you will kill and go to prison with a life long sentence for these flautas...they're that good...

There you have it folks, one of my secret spots revealed...News at 11!

Excuse me while I take a bite...*juicy bite in slow motion*  Mmmmmm, it's almost better than sex with a Perfect 10 Model!

I must start by saying that I eat lots of california burritos.  Lots & lots of them.  This place did not dissapoint.  Instead of chunks of carne asada, this burrito was full of strips of delicious meat which I enjoyed (not that I mind the chunks...chunks can be good).  There was some guac on it, the fries inside were tasty.  It was definitely a top 3 as far as c.b.'s go.

My friend had a pollo asada burrito and she said that the rice inside was some of the best she's had.  Both of us inhaled our food and couldn't stop talking about how good it was for like hours afterwards.

Also, their hot sauce is good.  It has a kick & tastes good.   If ever in Poway, go here and eat a burrito.  It's so worth the trip.

This place rocks. It looks like a typical 'bertos from the outside, but once you go in, it's obviously a cut above. Even the chalk menu is drawn beautifully. You can tell the owner really cares about the place.

The torta is excellent - high quality meat, fresh lettuce, warm and firm bread, etc. It came as highly recommended as their flautas. They also have Coke in bottles made with cane sugar. Score!

The owner is awesome. He remembered my buddy's names and they've only been there three times. He came by the table later to chat and tell jokes, and even told us he would cook a special recipe if we just called 20 minutes ahead. That's dedication.

Based on all the rave reviews I was expecting better.  I guess I should have tried the Rolled Tacos or Flautas that everybody was raving about, but I went with the Carne Asada Burrito instead.  The burrito was OK, but they use that fake guacamole that is kinda like green mayonnaise, and they put lettuce in their Carne Asada Burrito, which I thought was kinda weird.

The other items we ordered were Cheese Enchiladas and Pollo Asado Burritos.  The Pollo Asado was pretty good, but I thought the Enchiladas were sub par.

The place was pretty busy, but there are plenty of tables, so it wasn't a problem to find a seat.  You can also put a couple tables together for larger groups, which isn't always the case at taco shops.

This place is just not our thing.  I do like Mexican food, but on the fresh and healthy side.  This is your average Mexican-American taco shop.  What I mean by Mexican-American is super greasy, everything is fried, too much cheese and sour cream etc.  The food was much, much too heavy.

From the reviews, we were expecting better.  Now if you like this kind of Mexican food, this place is fine.

MUST GET the Chicken Flautas!! Never had flautas that tasted sooo good!

I usually order Carne Asada Burrito with only cheese, guac, & sour cream. Price is cheap for bomb food.

Not as good as the sister shop off Twin Peaks.
Wildly popular in Poway, El Ranchito is the upper echelon of Mexican food in this area. I usually grab a California Burrito, but I did a guacamole taco instead. I made the mistake of ordering it creamy style, which unbeknown to me was basically green sour cream. Always order it chunky style.

    - Penalty for charging a buck to take salsa "to-go". It aint right!

I used to be a diehard Albertos fan, but someone turned me on to flautas a few years ago and Albertos doesn't serve them.  Thank goodness for El Ranchito.

I still think that Albertos has a better carne asada burrito, but El Ranchito wins in every other category.  Guacamole is delicious.  Salsa is fresh and spicy.  Flautas are crispy and flakey.

The BLUF (bottom line up front) is that I will have to try this place again now that I know how some thngs are preparred. Overall the meat was good, but the way it was served was just average.

After reading all the reviews I had to try this place. I got rolled tacos, a chicken flauta and a beef flauta. For my wife and I, we prefer the way El Indio or Jalepenos prepares the food. The cold sour cream on top of a hot flauta wasn't that good, and there was so much sour cream, almost too much. It overpowered everything else. The rolled tacos had the guacamole creme vice real guac. So the cold sour cream and type of guac used kind of downplayed on the flautas and rolled tacos for us. Next time I would try the carne asada or rolled tacos without guacmole. The meat inside the tacos and flautas was very good, the way the toppings were added just threw it off for us.

I live in the South Bay but work up North, so I'm particular about Mexican Food.

Their food is great, comparable to Lolita's.  With their guacamole, they usually serve "American" Guacamole = Sour Cream with Avacado Power.  Ask for "Chunky" Guacamole, and you'll get the mexican style.

CARNITAS:  this is my favorite item here and its freaking good.  Crispy, salty, Juicy......nom nom nom
Rolled Tacos:  they're fat, crispy and meaty.  They usually serve them with ground beef, but you can ask for chicken and shredded beef for no extra charged.  They're not little and skimpy like Albertos or Super Sergios.
Carne Asada Fries:  they're so-so.  The portion is small, but the fries are thick.  The carne asada is thin but flavorful.  I've tried it twice, but never ordered it again.
Beans:  salty and flavorful.  its more like refried style, but tasty.

Their Red Sauce is also my favorite spicy, but not burn my mouth spicy
