Cute little hole in the wall.
Service was alright, food was great.
My husband had ordered a coffee and a water and the waitress didn't remember his coffee.
The chips that were brought out to the table were nice and warm, seemed to be made fresh there. They came with a salsa, and some sort of queso dip.
With my 'Special #9' I chose Mexican rice, instead of beans, which were delicious. Probably some of the best I've had at a restaurant.
The beef enchilada we got with our 'Special #10' was decent, it came w/ground beef though-which I don't recall being specified on the menu. And the waitress didn't ask if we wanted ground of shredded, which they usually do-at other Mexican restaurants at least.
We waited a reasonable amount of time for our food, as there were other people dining as well.
When it came time for the check though-we had to wait at least 10min.
Overall though, for the prices, and the food. I would definitely return if I lived in the area and I was looking for some non-fast food Mexican.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Cathy C.VA, VA010Mar 31, 2024Updated review
I had the Polo Asado and it was delicious. My husband had his favorite Shrimp Fajita. Service was prompt, the wait staff was friendly.

Overcharged... 2 fish taco dinners @$10.50 each and 1 tea @1.99 Charged me $40.09 Should have been $26.96 with the 15% tip I would have left and then language barrier all of the sudden. I just walked out. never again

Just 'okay' food.
Service was great...friendly, fast.
Mostly stopped here bc of the 4 star rating. Wouldn't recommend that choice. But it would be fine if the only Mexican food around.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Martin B.Eldersburg, MD0475Feb 14, 2023

Delicioso!! Seriously the nicest amigos. The best Mexican food along the 58 corridor between Suffolk and Emporia, in all of Tidewater and Hampton Roads. The food is served really fast and smoking hot, even when they are scrambling busy, the wait staff is always happy to see you! The food portions are filling enough to feed even the hungriest teenaged boy!! Recommend this family owned business even if it's not Taco Tuesday. Their signature homemade sangria is the very best around! Buen Provecho, from The Foodie & The Chicken Nugget.

NIce try but too much salt and not what I consider Authentic Mexican Cuisine. Nice place to dine in but food needs to be better.

So, I can see it's due time for a update on my 5
Star Reviews?! I am so sorry for the delay! But what I can add is you will get friendliness to no end here, amazing food at a great price, guaranteed leftovers for another nibble later on ;). And well, just overall amazing experience each and every time I come here (which is way too much). Oh how I love my El Ranchero though!!!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0May 2, 2015Previous reviewOh El Ranchero...how I've missed you! It's been a while since last I came...not by choice mind you! I have been aching to come back for months now, but just haven't had the time! But yesterday for lunch, ahhh, yesterday for lunch...I had the wonderful pleasure of being in the presence of Mexican greatness once again!
They are on point here! The staff works together to make sure drinks and chips are filled and refilled and that your food comes out as quickly as possible! The food is fresh and delicious, and you just can't beat their lunch prices coming in at 6.99 and under for the most part. They make sure your happy with your order, and take care of you like your an old beloved friend!
Walking in, the channel is always tuned into soccer, and well if there was only one sport I had to watch for the rest of my life...it would be soccer! So, they score some extra brownie points for that one for sure! I would still score them higher then a five if i could because to me they are a perfect 10! Do I sound a little preferential, maybe, but when you come across a place this great, everything else is just step down...so I can't help but to brag on them for all they pull off at this eatery!
It's like "Cheers" when everybody knows your name and what you like, and just treats you like family! The owner of the place is always checking in with his customers as well to see how they are liking everything, and to me that speaks volumes when they actually care about their customers experience at their eatery! And the other day I saw him preparing the fresh table side guacamole for a group, and was impressed that he too is willing to jump in and deliver the best to his customer's! Walking away feeling more then pleased, and looking forward to the next visit already!Jun 25, 2014Previous reviewOk, so you just don't understand...I have a weekly mexican longing that can only be fulfilled by this place alone!!! This is my tried and true date night slash mexican fix that no other place within an hours distance even remotely compares too...seriously...this is no joke! I do NOT joke about my mexican food! The three amigos dish, as well as most of the items listed on the "specials" that are grilled and topped with the white cheese of amazingness are all crowd pleasers...keep it up el ranchero....your awesome!!!
The staff are always helpful and friendly for the most part. The food is always on point! However, if you go with a cheaper meal, you typically get the shredded chicken versus the higher priced meals have the fresh grilled chunks of chicken that are just better tasting all around and worth the extra few dollars for sure....thus you get what you pay for! Their fresh chips and salsa are always a great way to start your meal, and they are great about refills and prompt service all around from checking on your needs to delivering your food in a timely manner! You can't get much better anywhere around this area, but don't take that the wrong way! I would drive 30 minutes to an hour at least in any direction to get to a great place like this for sure! Great authentic Mexican food for sure!!! - Jun 15, 2022
El Rachero strikes you as the typical "white washed" Mexican food that is so popular here in Virginia. It has a large menu with what seems like a good selection- we had high hopes. Since they had on there my daughter's favorite and mine. That being Chile Colorado and Chile Relleno.
They begin by giving you a basket of warm crunchy tortilla chips with a fresh salsa and the infamous "Virginia white sauce" (I can't really tell if it's suppose to be RANCH or cheese .. or cheesy ranch or ranch cheese) no matter what- I actually liked their version of this weird white stuff.
I ordered a Lunch combo with a crunchy taco , Chile relleno and rice & beans for just $7.50... really decent price. The taco was good as were the rice and beans. The Chile relleno - had a very melty sour cheese I've never tasted before and after one bite I was done.
My daughter was excited for her Chile Colorado but after it came and it was obvious they just sliced up some carne and threw some sauce on top it was obvious it wasn't marinated in the sauce- and it was chewy and tough. But.. she liked the rice and beans. That was 11.99 not a bad price but considering she didn't enjoy it, it was too much.
My other girl got the chicken enchiladas lunch for 7.50$ 2 enchiladas with a pink sauce , covered in lettuce, tomato and sour cream, rice and beans. Her rice tasted sour, but she enjoyed the weirdly colored enchiladas. It looked like they mixed enchilada sauce with sour cream and smothered the enchiladas with that.
For dessert we got Sopapillas - for 2.50$ we got 4 perfect little bites of cinnamon sugar crunchy tortillas with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. The best part of our meal.
It was busy so the atmosphere was good, they obviously get a lot of business , a lot of regulars. Prices are not terrible.. that's a bonus.. it just really was not my type of Mexican food.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bob J.VA, VA08Jun 23, 2023
The best Mexican restaurant in Franklin. The Three Amigos is one of the best entrées you can get in the area.

If only I could give an establishment zero stars. We ordered curbside and once we opened one of our dishes we discovered a BUG. Expecting them to be respectful and refunding our money they asked us "why didn't we want to eat our food" and to bring the dish back to prove to them that there was actually a bug. Once we got there they gave an excuse of "this has never happened before so we don't know what to do". Ultimately we received our money back without an apology for being inconvenience for our time and hunger. Needless to say we will NEVER order from here again and advise you to save your time and money.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
