A real treasure. Reasonably priced, clean hotel with outstanding service. The town of Chula Vista isn't much (it's not dangerous, contrary to what J.M. says) but El Primero stands out. You think you happened on a diamond in the rough. I particularly liked the buffet breakfast -- lots of fresh food, served on a lovely patio.
And it's reasonably close to downtown SD, as well as Mexico, depending on where your vices lie.
Ok...I have to give this place 5 stars, which is pretty hard to squeeze out of me. I went to San Diego to try out for American Idol, but it was also the same time as a comic book convention, so even a Super 8 was charging $300 for Sat. night, then back down to $120 for Sun and Mon.
Anyway, long story short, I found this place online, and our San Diego friend told us Chula Vista was the ghetto, but I didn't care! The pictures looked nice, and the price was right, so I booked it.
It wound up being a great choice. It is a newly remodeled bed and breakfast. Some parts of Chula Vista are a little scary, but El Primero is located in a cute downtown area. We were able to walk to lots of eateries and shops. The accommodations were very homey, yet modern and convenient.
But...the best thing about this place was the owners. They were so sweet and helpful. I would definitely stay here again!!
PS The breakfast is nothing elaborate, but had everything I wanted. An egg dish, lots of fresh fruit from pineapple and papaya to cherries and watermelon. Coffee, juice, cereal, bagels, etc. Very tasty!

BF and I were headed down to San Diego for the recent John Mayor concert, and needed a place to stay. Checked everything in SD and saw that it was all over priced! Searched for hotels in surrounding area and EL Primero came up as one of the places to stay in Chula VIsta. Read reviews of other hotels in Chula Vista, which warned of "not going out at night because of suspicious looking people and strange noises outside". But alas, I booked El Primero for the rave reviews it received for quality of service and stay. I have to admit, I was also sold by the photos.
Our stay was SO great! This boutique hotel is family owned, and the family is incredibly friendly and accomodating. Room size and bathroom is cozy, just enough for two people. Modern and clean design in the room and throughout (dark wood furnishings and bright pastel color motif).
The free morning breakfast is awesome!!! Self-serve breakfast in this cute little kitchen, then you walk out with your tray of goodies into the spacious umbrella covered tables, where you can hang out and enjoy the morning while having your cereal, bagels, freshly sliced strawberrres and pineapples, and hard-boiled eggs. The owner comes out and has short friendly chats with everyone and was helpful with directions.
The hotel is also a few blocks away from downtown Chula Vista, a cute place to walk through to kill some time. It's also a few minutes drive from the major freeways, and it only took us about 30 min (including traffic) to get to the Coors amphitheatre.
And parking is free!

So we went to the NIN/JA show at the Cricket Amphitheater and decided to make a romantic weekend out of it. We stayed at El Primero based on reviews I read on http://www.Hotels.com I was not disappointed. The breakfast in the morning is good, there's all the usual fruits, breads, coffee and such. Nothing spectacular but when you consider that breakfast is usually 25.00 for 2 people it is well factored into the price of the hotel. The staff is very friendly. The rooms are clean and comfortable. You can tell they were recently remodeled. The only weird part is that the walls are a little thin so you can hear your neighbors and I'm sure they can hear you. We stayed in the room closest to the lobby. The bed squeaked a lot and I'm sure the desk clerk was entertained but hey, it was a romantic weekend right? Anyway, you won't go wrong at the El Primero. The neighborhood reminds me of Uptown Whittier like 20 years ago. Everything is walking distance and safe (the Police Station is a block away). I would definitely stay there again but maybe not so close to the lobby.
