My husband and I travel to Sedona about 3 times a year with friends or family and decided it was time for just us. We wanted to celebrate our 20th anniversary in a place known for beauty and relaxation. We were looking for a special place to stay and found the El Portal Luxury Inn a few months back and thought "that place looks interesting". We were right!

We booked our 2 night stay and had the most relaxing time nestled on the hill tucked away from all the traffic of Sedona. We discovered a beautiful craftsman styled hacienda full of turn of the century antiques and character. Heather, the welcoming night manager, checked us in to a lovely spacious room with it's own secluded patio. The natural stone floors and fireplace, comfortable antique furnishings, and ceiling portioned with incredible tree trunk beams all added the feeling of warmth and relaxation. We enjoyed a bottle of wine amongst the trees and flowers scattered everywhere. I found out later that Steve Segner, the owner, is an avid horticulturist and expert in the craftsmen style. He and his wife have been collecting craftsmen style furnishings for years. The details show in everything from the wonderful furnishings to the abundant plantings to the delightful private areas to just sit and watch the birds or visit with other guests. We had an incredible time thanks to all the special touches, restaurant advice (Elote Mexican was fabulous!) and the friendly conversations. Thanks Steve for making the El Portal a wonderful place to visit, relax and unwind! Next time we will stay for your famous Saturday evening meal!

Primarily a deluxe bed-and-breakfast inn, it also serves superb dinners on Friday and Saturday nights that are open to the public by reservation only. Eating here provides non-guests an opportunity to lounge in the serene courtyard and attractive living room and get a sense of what it's like to stay here. The short menu usually includes about a half-dozen entrees and an equal number of appetizers and salads. We shared an order of baked brie with roasted garlic and raspberry-chipotle sauce, then enjoyed pinenut-encrusted halibut with smoked jalapeo-papaya salsa and lamb tenderloin with a pinenut-mint pesto for our entrees. It's elegantly casual . . . or is it casually elegant? Either way, it's a wonderful alternative to the restaurants in town.

The Flat Rock Hickory is the nicest room I've ever stayed in, and I've stayed at some very nice places (believe it or not).  The only thing missing is an ocean view, but hey, its Arizona.

There is a lot of attention to detail in this place, and the walls are adobe!  The only thing that's a little different is that they allow dogs, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it.  The room was clean though, and they actually give you an empty fridge so you can put your own food or drinks in it.
