I went there the other night and of all my years of living in Fremont, I had never visited the famous El Patio.
I ordered the chile rellenos with potatoes and cheese - it was excellent. My only complaint was that it was literally drenched in cheese, way too much cheese for my taste. My boyfriend ordered a super veggie burrito and that thing was a monster!! HUGE burrito!
Our waitress was overly perky but helpful nonetheless, we got in and out of there without any problems at all. The margarita was yummy too!

Holy crap. Talk about a hidden gem in the heart of Fremont. We went here for a Cinco de Mayo lunch and it was relatively empty. The food is good and reasonably priced. The super burrito is more like GIGANTOR burrito...

They serve you fast and quick which is always good when you're on a limited amount of time. I'll definitely go back. It sounds like they have a good happy hour here too. Yay.

I like this place a lot! I have been going here for years, when it was located in the Glenmoor shopping center. They have traditional home style mexican food with a full bar menu. Let me clarify that they have a full bar but not a bar you sit down at, they have table service. Does that make sense? I order their enchiladas, super quesadillas, super nachos and the house special. They also make a good huevos rancheros if you want breakfast. I recommend their chicken and rice soup which you can get with your dinner, they offer soup or salad with your meal. The owners of this place are really nice and always remember our names which is always a nice and makes us feel special:).  **They have a banquet room which you can rent for parties!

This place is called El Patio and the sign on the door boasts its Cilantro Bar...they have a very nice bar area...but there are NO barstools or hightops where you could actually enjoy a margarita or beer while you wait.

I've been here twice now and I have to say, it's just ok.  I've tried the combination plates, with chile relleno, enchilada, tamale, or burrito.  While it wasn't bad food by any means, it was your traditional stuff that you could likley find at a decent taqueria/burrito shop as well. The chicken soup is tasty with added veggies (celery, squash).

The menu doesn't have any spectacular standouts that you might expect, like a house specialty or some interesting twists on classics.  So, if you're looking for basic Mexican cuisine, this should suit your needs.

And I'll go ahead and say it.  In Fremont, La Casita and La Pinata are both better and have some great house favorites to choose from.

I'm an El Patio groupie since the old days in the Glenmoor shopping center.  This is mostly due to my love of mexican food (even if americanized) and the fact that La Casita is all the way across town from where I lived.
Some things are EXCELLENT here and some maybe not so good. I moved to Livermore and still occasionally ask my Hubby to pick up a to-go order on his way home from work cuz I'm feining(sp) for it. Here's my list:

Excellent::
Fajitas
Enchiladas (chicken, beef or cheese-love them all!)
Flautas
Chicken and rice soup
Chile Verde con queso (carb overload-no meat just potatoes)
Super Quesadilla with chicken
Guacamole

Not so good:
Mexican Chicken Delight (but my sis in law loves it)
Beans (you can order no beans - double rice with your entree)
Nachos or Super Nachos (soggy with too much sauce)

Usually good (but I have also had some bad ones):
Soft Carne Asada Tacos
Chile Verde

We have almost always had good service.
They are great for catering too (think large trays of fajitas for 50 people with all the trimmings on the side) and the food was just as yummy and fresh.(and so cheap for what you get)

I admit that I'm biased because I grew up eating here and to me - this is what good mexican food tastes like.  Just like most people prefer food a certain way because that's how their mom used to make it....
The tastes here are familiar and comfortable to me and I will keep coming back until they serve their last bowl of chips and salsa.

GREAT!!! Great place to go. If you ever think of going to Chevy's.... FORGET it. Come here!!! This place piles on the meat and it's totally worth it. Everything is worth the price. Everything is under like $12. It use to be under $10 but come on. Better than Chevy's.

This place has gone completely down hill since their days in Glenmoor. Some of the food was OK back then and I'm sure the customer service was just as horrible then as it is now, but I was too young to notice. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by stone, unfriendly faces and bad attitudes by most of their employees. The female owner seems like the only decent one, I've never met the husband. Their kids, who also work there, are little intimidating gangsters and the older fat guy with the limp is totally unprofessional and acts like a little bitch.

Update 2/15/08

I found out that there are new owners of this restaurant and what a relief it is to hear that. Hopefully they will be able to turn this place around. One of the new owners told me that they kept all of the old staff working there like it was a good thing. First bad business move! Hopefully they will get rid of all those lame little cholo figurines at the register too. I actually ate a beef super burrito from there last night and unfortunately it was honestly pretty tasteless and needed a ton of salt and seasoning in my opinion. The only thing I like there at this point are the chips and salsa, but we will see...

Ate here alone while waiting for my car to be serviced.  Had a plate of tacos with rice and beans, plus one domestic beer.  Total tab was just over $10.

Mexican food just isn't one of those foods that makes the upper echelon of fine dining anywhere.  However, El Patio food was good, the service prompt and courteous.  I'd gladly return.  Happy hour is from 4-6 Mon-Sat:  Domestic beer $2, Import $3.  They have several pages of tequila to choose from.  It might be a good place for group get-together.  They also have a private dining room that looks like it holds 50 people or so.

We've been going here about once a week for 13 years now.  It's still the consistently best quality Mexican restaurant I've ever been to (and I've been to many).  Folks will tell me about others but they never meet all my criteria.  All white meat chicken; good quality cheeses in the cheese enchiladas; the best enchilada sauce; great quality house margaritas at a good price during happy hour; real guacamole; perfectly spiced spanish rice not that tomato-y gunk elsewhere; and the best chicken soup (again only with white meat chicken & veggies even in the soup).    Some people vouch for La Casita but I find the quality here better.

We learned tonight that it's just been sold.  However, based on our meal tonight, the new owners appear to be carrying on the tradition of high quality mexican food - quite a relief.

What do I recommend?  A two item plate with chicken flautas & a cheese enchilada comes with real sour cream & guacamole, rice, beans & the chicken soup....yum!

(I'm not quite sure about the reviewer that had bad customer service.  It's never happened to us.  Food was always prompt & the servers nice. )

Enjoy!

The operators make me feel at home.  They know me by first name, and they work hard to ensure a great experience, and they never fail!  The food is excellent, and I hear that their banquet experiences are excellent (although I have never used their banquet facilities).

They also have over 100 types of Tequila!

Anything is great here. I have been coming here since a small kid and its never been bad. Family business - great service and I love their happy hour. :) I have never had a horrible experience here... their help has been good to me over the years.

I read that someone felt that they were intimidating gangsters. Arent we stero-typing? But if your going to go to the extent of asserting this.. why dont you back it up with proof?

I love El Patio. I have been going there since it was in Glenmoor area and I still love it.  It is a good place for lunch with friends or low key dinner. Not fancy, just a nice place. I don't like the lower seating area because I don't think the chairs are that comfy. I am more into booths which they do have also. I usually just order to go anyway. When we go out to eat Mexican food, the rest of the fam likes La Casita better.

So i dont make many trips back to the home front because well..  anyone that knows fremont knows there arent many good reasons to come back here..
except one, El patio. I dont know the exact amount of years i have been coming here, but i know its well into 20+ years now. Yeah we went when it was over near the former fremont market, when they had maybe 10 tables, yeah we were there when they still had mariochi band and expanded to the newer larger room nextdoor to allow for 20 extra tables, and yes the eventual move the the current location... We have been there with them step by step....

The one thing i love about this simple place that continues to grow  is that they stay true to what got them there, good, cheap, authentic food, and a friendly staff.

the food remains the same, and its just the way i like it. If you look at the wall of fame you will see year in and year out, "voted best mexican cuisine in fremont" awards

dont change a thing .

I've been passing by El Patio for years before the GF and I decided to stop in have a bite to eat as we were craving Mexican food.  When we got here, I have to say, this place is deceptively BIG.  You have what looks like a private dinning/banquet section and then you have the general eating section which is divided into two levels, booths on top and on the side, tables on the bottom and in the middle.

The GF and I decided on a booth and we were immediately seated.  El Patio is decorated like a giant Taqueria, a ton of Corona Beer stuff all over the place and a hodgepodge of soccer and football signs, so if you're looking for a "Mexican Ambiance" this is not the place.  We got out menus not even 1 minute the waiter asked if we wanted anything.  I'm think no, I haven't even opened the menu yet and told him to come in 5 minutes.

Food options here is your typical sit down Mexican choices, so if you're looking something beyond Burrito, Fajitas, Tacos, Chili Relanos, etc etc, then you're at the wrong place.  Prices here are on the high side if you go for one of their speciality plates.  For most of their standard 2 or 3 combo plates (that come with beans and rice and soup/salad) you're looking at between $9 - $11.  For their house special plates you're looking between $12 - $16.  If you're into tequila, El Patio has one of the more extensive tequila choices I've seen.  Must have been 3-4 pages of tequila to choose from and each page had about 20 choices.

We finally decided on our order, the GF got the a la carte Veggie Fajitas and I got one of their house specials, the Burritos Colorado.  We then got our chips and Salsa.  The chips were your corn type, GF said they tasted a little stale to her, like they've been sitting under the heating lamp a couple of days.  The Salsa, I thought was good though it is on the spicy side.

I got my salad in what must have been like 5 minutes.  Typical salad, nothing special but everything looked fresh.  I wasn't even half way through my salad when we got our meals.  I was shocked at the speed we got our food.  Must have been 10 minutes tops since we put in our order.  Portion size here is extra generous.  There was plenty of food for the both of us.  The rice and beans tasted good and I'm kind of mixed on the Burritos.  I got two small size burritos (though I only ate one and took home the other), the beef was good and in a nice red sauce, but that was it.  There was nothing more than the beef and sauce in the burrito.

The GF's Veggie Fajitas were probably some of the best Veggie Fajitas I've had.  Not only do they give you your typical peppers and onions, but also added in some mushrooms, squash, and zucchini.  This add a lot to the Fajitas and also we must have gotten like 5 or 6 toritas too.  There was more than enough food and took home plenty of food.

Overall I would say it was a good dining experience.  The food here was good and we got it super quick but it is on the high side compared to most places.  The server while he was doing his job, just seemed indifferent and that he really didn't want to be there or serve us.  Would have been nice if we got a refill on the cokes.  At the end of the day it cost us about $35 including tip with enough food to be dinner the next night.  I'm more incline to give this place 3 - 3.5 stars, GF, says 4.  You can see at the top who won that debate but in the end, had a good time and would consider coming back.

Aw these reviews are so sad!!!  Compared to the other Mexican restaurants in Fremont, this one is probably one of the better.

Chips & salsa are addicting.  I've only gotten the lunch specials where you can choose 1 or 2 items (enchilada, burrito, flauta, tamale, chile relleno, taco, etc.) with sides of rice & beans.  It usually does not cost more than $8.  The thing I look for in quality Mexican food is the cheese.  Their cheese is great... there's a lot & it's gooey just the way I like it.

If you're not as hungry or just not in the mood for rice & beans, you can order items a la carte which is actually a really good deal.  Each item (the ones listed above) are about $2-3.  My coworker who has lived in Texas for a good couple years really likes the chile relleno here.  I'm not sure what authentic chile relleno is suppose to taste like so I trust his taste buds.

Service has always been good although a little slow at times.  The restaurant is huge so even with a lot of people, there's never a problem getting seated within 5 minutes.

Also if you ever need a banquet room, there's a huge one to your right after you enter.

Jatbar led me astray on this one!

This restaurant was just meh.  The chips were too salty and seemed like generic Costco tortilla chips, and their salsa didn't taste fresh and wasn't spicy enough.  The chicken soup was decent, but the entrees just did not impress me either.  I prefer La Casita further down on Fremont Blvd, not only does it have better food, but better ambiance as well.

I've been here a couple of times, having mistaken it for a Mexican restaurant. Just kidding. Seriously, though, I've eaten here a few times with co-workers. The service wasn't super friendly any of those times.

I haven't gone recently because I haven't wanted to go back. The food wasn't memorable to me. Nothing gross or anything, just pretty boring. I remember I liked the salsa and chips. That's about it. The beans weren't tasty, the camarones weren't very flavorful.... and did I mention that the service wasn't friendly? After being served, I felt like we needed to hurry up and just get out already. Bummer. They had a fireplace that looked like if it was lit at night would be really cozy. Of course, I always came at lunch.

I prefer Taqueria Nuevo Vallarta for flavorful food. In face, when I finish this fast that I'm on, I'm going to get me some fish tacos from there! They are yummy!

Back to El Patio... they may have been good once, but apparently they lost their way....

This place is my 2nd home!  I love the family atmosphere with 3 generations of the hardest working folks you'd ever want to meet.

I find the decor charming, COLORFUL. upbeat and changes with every season and holiday.  Having lived in Mexico as an exchange student years ago, this place reminds me of that wonderful experience, close extended families, wonderful traditions...a happy place to be.

The food is excellent ,in my opinion.  As a bean expert, this comfort food is the best around!  Having NEVER had a bad meal at El Patio, I am astounded at some of these reviews!

Average to poor mexican food.  Average to poor service.  The only thing good about this place is I can walk to it from my house, and it's fairly large and easy to get a seat.  Avoid it, unless youre hitchhiking across the country and someone dumps you off on Fremont Blvd. near the train tracks, and you have $15 and are starving..and it's rainy and cold outside.  Then it would be pretty satisfying :)

I've been here twice.  the first time, my brother swore up and down the block that this is THE BEST mexican food (EVER!) -- my brother eats a lot so i figured he would know.  the food was eh.  i mean, it was good, but it wasn't like " blow-your-socks-off-fantastic-that-i-must-go -back" type of "good".  it was just simply a decent mexican meal.

Although, i did go back a second time.  the second time we had drinks and they were ok, too sweet.  not much of a tequila drinker, but even i know when something is too sweet.

I would say the deco is "typically" mexican, it's a little dim, but it's good for the ambiance...?

The service is decent and the food is decent.  it you want something mexican that's not fast food burrito shop and that's not chevy's or el torito then this is a decent sit down with service and drinks place.  i think this is better than la pinata.

The first time I went, I thought it wasn't bad... the plates were hot, but the food was plentiful and decent. I liked the fact that the meal came with choice of soup or salad. The chips were okay and the salsa wasn't that great, but even bad salsa is edible.

HOWEVER, I went a second time and have officially dubbed this place RED SAUCE RESTAURANT because it seems like ALL of their meals are suffocated in this bland red sauce. I'm not kidding, the red sauce is king here.

I don't ever plan on going back since there are much better Mexican restaurants in the area who don't rely on bland red sauce to make the food seem authentic and flavorful. Truly, this place is an embarrassment to Mexican cuisine.

UPDATE:
Sorry El Pats - you are now receiving the dreaded "one star review"... why, oh why, you ask?  Let me sum it all up - two words - rancid meat.
Husband orders usual "house special" carne asada dinner.  Eats one taco, comments that it tasted a bit "funny" tonight, but he dumps tons of the tomatillo sauce on it.  He gallantly offers me half of his second taco - I take one bite and don't need another to confirm my suspicion.  Rancid meat is one of those tastes that you recognize instantly - and don't ever, ever want to experience again.  You know the old saying about not eating fish on Mondays?  Well that rule is now expanded to carne asada in our household... and to not eating at El Patio... was nice knowin' ya El Fats...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Unfortunately, El Patio is a much revered tradition in Fremont lore... Most people who are loyal and LOVE the place have been coming here ever since they were in the shopping center in Glenmoor.   It's... eh... OK.  It's not bad, per se, but it's not really good either.  And it only gets two stars because of the service, or lack thereof, a majority of the time.
My husband always, always, orders the carne asada tacos - the house special.  It's very hit and miss - some days pretty good, not too greasy, other days, very grisly and dripping with grease.  I'm not an expert, but I don't think that's how it's supposed to be.  The beans generally have NO flavor - I've tried the chile colorado, the chile verde, etc. desperately looking for some flavor, to no avail.  It all tastes like the same day old grease.
The salsa can be pretty tasty depending on the day, and the soup is good when you're sick, but that's about it....
The decor in this restaurant was tacky and the food price didn't quite live up to expectations.  I went here with high expectations because it was recommended by friends and my best friend (ex-beau) had gone there with one of my girlfriends - they claimed it was good.  Well, it wasn't!  I had a beef burrito, a glass of water and he had a lunch portion carne asada taco and Diet Coke and our bill was $22!  RIDICULOUS!  However, my best friend did claim that the carne asada taco was good and he'd go back there again.  Darn!  I felt that the food at the taco track 1/2 mile on Thornton tasted better but that's just my opinion.  I wouldn't have minded the price if the service made up for it or the ambiance did.  Instead, we had crappy service and the decor was TACKY!  Argh!  If I was asked to go back, I'd probably cringe inside.  LOL
I think that this place is perhaps the most over rated diner in the whole area. The layout is amazing and it's oozing with potential. The service is average and the salsa leaves much to be desired.  The soup is good but the entrees are very normal to below average. I don't see the attraction to this place other than the nice layout inside.  Food doesn't leave any lasting impression and I cringe everytime suggests we go here.
I don't totally agree with a lot of the reviews here posted.  Sure this place may not be innovative or cutting edge.  Hell, it's not even traditional or authentic.  It is americanized mexican food, done decently i might add.  Way back when, say a couple of decades ago, this place started as a maybe six table hole in the wall in the isolated neighborhood of Glenmoor in Fremont.  The restaurant grew steadily in size over the years with mostly the Centerville residents as its loyal patrons.  They eventually got kicked out of the neighborhood and i think with help from the city, was able to relocate right on Fremont Blvd.  Many say the move changed them for the worse, but i don't really see it, and the place can still pack em in, and this spot is triple the size of the former.
I admit that i do not come here for authenticity, nor do i come here to sample their creative interpretations of mexican classics.  i do come here to stuff my belly with something warm and honest, and i usually do it for well under 10 bucks.  The menu has gotten larger but i ignore most of that.  i still order my tried n trues, stuff i ate as a kid, during the Reagan administration and beyond.  Their basic beef burrito is a simple treat.  Flavorful stewed shredded beef rolled in a soft flour tortilla.  The rice and beans are on the side, not inside the burrito.  It's the size of a small fist, not the super ones the size of a regulation football (although they have those too).  Top the burrito with the mole sauce for an extra buck and you've just kicked it up a notch (that's how i roll).  The enchiladas are solid as are their small tostadas.  The combo plates will stuff the heartiest of appetites, i guarantee it.
My main meal here, especially as an adult, and especially for lunch is a cup of chicken/rice soup and a small salad.  Crumble some tortilla chips into the soup and lots of black pepper into my cold salad of iceburg lettuce, tomato and garbanzo and kidney beans.  They nicely complement each other and together for barely $5, get the f*** outa here, right?
i am giving this place 4 stars only b/c it definitely deserves more than 3.  The service has always been friendly and accomodating and the chips and salsa are a lot better than some "authentic" and/or "cutting edge" Mexican places.  Stick to the basics and this place shall not disappoint.  This is 2 1/2 decades of happy belly experiences telling ya so.
Pretty standard sit down Mexican food.  I've been coming to this place, although not very frequently, for about 6 years now.  They have all the standard Mexican fare.  You have tacos, enchiladas, burritos, mole, chile rellenos, rice, beans, tostadas.  There isn't much that seperates this place from other Mexican restaurants, other than it's a pretty decent size.  The service is very friendly though.
Reasonably good Mexican food. The best part is the price and portion ratio - lots of food for what you pay. So if you're hungry, and you want Mexican...go for it! The owner is a real sweet guy too - just a big teddy bear. Friday's are crazy, though, so be ready for a wait to get seated.
Well,this is my first "review",but after reading all your terrible ones of my family's favorite restaurant for the past 12 years---I had to!! We have been going here ever since they were at their old location,probably over 15 years ago...Their salsa is our favorite! Addictive!! If you have been and have not tried the chile relleno--you are really missing out! Also,paired with the beef enchilada(shredded,NOT ground)it is the perfect combo platter! They have generous portions,reasonable prices and a full bar.They even have a private room where I hosted a baby shower for my sister and it was perfect and inexpensive for a buffet.I just can't believe that it's gotten such a bad rap? I moved to Santa Clara a yr.ago and still go to Fremont every once in awhile to satisfy my El Patio cravings!! Have yet to find a restaurant out here that comes close--including one my bf and I tried last night on recommendation from Yelp!? Casa Lupe?? I ordered a beef enchilada and got ground beef? I can get that at Taco Bell thank you very much.I don't see how you guys can rate it higher than El Patio? Their take-out is awesome too.
I was very disappointed with my meal at this place. Bland is too exotic of a word to describe the food here- that's how boring and flavorless it was. The chicken soup was the best part of my dinner and it wasn't even good! I totally agree that their food reminds me of Chef Boyardee, in fact the soup actually tasted like spaghetti-Os. I also ordered the shrimp fajitas, which was more like an Asian stir-fry than actual Mexican fajitas. The shrimp wasn't seasoned at all, not even with salt, pepper or lime. They didn't even give me a lime! I could have made a much better dinner at home, myself!
The service wasn't exactly good or attentive, either. I told them I didn't want cheese, and not only did they bring me cheese but they brought me a grotesque pile of melted cheese! The waiter also dropped off the check at our table while we were still eating, which I thought was obnoxious, especially since we had planned on getting a dessert (which I regret getting, because the dessert was awful too). We decided to all share the Torta Tres Leches, which is a family favorite. We always order it whenever we see it on a menu because we grew up with it in Chile and it's so good when made right. However, I think the people at el Patio thought they could get away with making a basic white cake and pouring milk all over it til it was soaked, putting it in the fridge and topping it with whipped cream and cherries. It actually tasted really old to me. The whipped cream was even crusty! I don't think people order it very often.
Needless to say, I won't be going back.
An institution in Fremont, never quite the same since it moved to it's new location 7 years ago (at least to me, the food is good but the old storefront had some appeal).  Still, the flautas are wonderful as is the chili riejeno (SP?).  Nice family run business.
Tthe food's pretty good.
Edit for update: So there's a new owner now...and the food sucks. What a disappointment!! I wish they had kept the same food but now everything I've tried is totally greasy and awful tasting. I changed my stars from 3 to 1 to reflect the new change.
This is my husbands favorite place. It's not as authentic as I'd like it to be- but it's cool. They have good service and they recently opened their bar ...(margaritas are great!).
Decent place to eat. I first got pulled here to eat  when it was located on Eggers Blvd and never have been really impressed.I think the interior is kind of sterile I would eat here again but would not make a special trip to eat here.
The food at this place is awful.  The guy at the front desk (presumably the owner) is very nice but that is as good as it gets.  From there, the service is horrible.  The guys who bring the salsa have the worst manners and look very unhappy.  The servers are not friendly.  The salsa is horrible and the chips are cold.  The fajita was lousy.  I don't know why anyone would like this place?
We had a very good meal there last night; our first visit.  The layout is very good; there is a ring of booths circling a lower center section of tables.  The center section is set off by a low wall that, combined with the lower area and the various generic Latin decorations adorning the wall, provides some decent privacy between the booths and tables.  The booths are separated by low mirrors, so overall there is reasonable seating privacy.  Overall, we felt quite comfortable there.
I had an excellent chili relleno and enchilada combo.  The chili relleno was  one of the best I've had and the enchilada, an item usually fairly nondescript, was notably good.  They had a good selection of tequilas, beer, and other bar drinks.  I had an 8 buck tequila shot that was quite probably worth the money.  The service was quick and friendly.
I have never been served anything that I didn't love in this restaurant.
Takeout has not been as kind to me, but never really made me think of Chef Boyardee.
The house special is usually very good.
One of my top favorites. I love this place.
The only way I can imagine the negative reviews on here is to think of the take out experiences I've had, which were bad a few times. I guess I've been more lucky than most.
For a good burrito, try El Pique (on Mowry)
For a good dinner, try El Patio.
Highly recommended.
Awful!!   How could a restaurant serve such bland, uninspired food?   Beyond pedestrian!
