    Good traditional Mexican food.

I really like the lunch buffet. The service is outstanding; they leave a pitcher of tea for on the table for you. You better not have a lot of work in the afternoon though...

This is the oldest Mexican restaurant in town, and is popular primarily with the old-time residents of Huntsville.

While it doesn't suit everybody (it definitely feels old and hole-in-the-wall), it has the best refried beans in town. I also prefer their chile rellenos to everyone elses (green chile stuffed with meat and cheese - nice tanginess), including the more authentic hispanic-owned restaurants in town (must be the gringo in me).

The food isn't always consistent, but I'm always satisfied when I leave.

The price rating is based on the cafeteria-buffet lunch (two items, beans, rice, and drink).

Um, I really can't understand the crowd? I feel a bit out of place. I tied this place really because it's been here since the 60s and I'm really sorry I did. First off, don't sit in the booth. They will eat you alive. Second off the food was AWFUL and extreme over priced. The beef in my taco was bone cold, and the shell was stale. The salsa was only thing I could stomach.

El Palacio took my Mexican Food virginity (at least I waited until high school!). Yes, it was my first and I will always have fond memories of our time together even though I'm a Texan now.

On a trip to Huntsville in December, Sugar Bear and I went to El Palacio for lunch. Sugar Bear was born and raised in Texas. He was appalled that we were actually going to a Mexican restaurant in Alabama. As he entered the place, he noted that there were no actual Mexicans working there and he wanted to leave. I pushed him through the cafeteria style line with the promise that it was much higher quality than Pancho's.

We dined on enchiladas, chalupas, and chile rellenos. While it is not as great as our local favorites, I still found it to be quite good. The hot sauce is wonderful and they have the BEST refried beans on the planet! Sugar Bear was pleased and completely cleaned his plate.

There is a lunch buffet (not all you can eat though) that offers 2 items with beans, rice, chips and salsa. You can dine on the other side of restaurant for the full menu, but the buffet is such an awesome lunch deal! It is the same enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, and chile rellenos on both sides so why spend more for a prettier presentation?

Sugar Bear, who affectionately refers to El Palacio as El Felatio, has heard me talk about the 'whipped cream' ceiling of this place for years. He FINALLY knows what I'm talking about. Go there and look up. It is SO cool and I've never seen anything else like it elsewhere.

Added Bonus: El Palacio is also very close the 1st Baptist Church, home of the 'Egg Beater Jesus Floating Through Outer Space' mosaic. It is a '70's mural on the front of the church that literally looks like the title in the previous sentence. It is worth the drive a few blocks north on University to check it out. Sugar Bear says his life is complete now that he has viewed its magnificence.  (There is a snapshot of the mural in my picture collection on Yelp.  It is not as amazing as seeing it in real life though.)

It was an unusual time in my life. I was going through an ALL YOU CAN EAT MEXICAN FOOD phase, and the sign promising an all-you-can-eat plethora of cheesy enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos was too appealing for me to resist.

    ...

    LIES! LIES!

IT WAS NOTHING BUT LIES! There was no all-you-can-eat. There was no Mexican. Instead what I got was cafeteria style "Mexican" food -- no, "food" -- at restaurant prices. What a sham.

It pains me to do this, but it must be said. Bad experiences lately. This was my favorite place to eat in Hsv. growing up. Now, it is a shadow of its once glorious self. The place is in disrepair, the food is bland, nobody goes there anymore. I must say, the frijoles barrachos soup and deluxe nachos are still top notch, but not enough to overcome the bland steak soft tacos, stale chips, overpriced items, and unapologetic servers. Its been open since the 60's. Lets all hope it changes management or the current management starts caring again.
