1 review for El Guerito
This is an authentic taqueria that doesn't know it's in California, let alone know what a California burrito is. That being said, there's a lot to like about a burrito reduced to its most simple ingredients.
When you walk into this taqueria, ten times out of ten, you'll be the only non Latino/Hispanic/Chicano in the place. And when you order a burrito, folks look at you like you're crazy until you ask for it para llevar. Oh, that explains why you'd order a burrito. You need something to eat while you're driving!
The burrito is a smallish assemblage of refritos (completely mashed and fried with lard), undistinguished rice, and meat of your choice at the bargain price of $1.50. Yes, there is no cheese! I like both the chile verde and the carne asada. The hunks of pork in the chile verde are largish and somewhat dry, but with nice flavor. The carne asada is cooked on the grill while you wait. They have a complete selection of classic meats such as lengua, cabeza, pollo asada, and carnitas, but because I pretend to be a vegan masquerading as a flex-etarian, I stay away from identifiable body parts and/or stuff in dark pools of simmering liquid.
The salsa bar is a thing of beauty. Just like the taco trucks in Oakland, you can have whole green onions, whole radishes, salsa fresca, a tomato chile salsa, a hot ranchera salsa, and some of the best salsa verde al Mazatlan I've had in the states. The salsa verde is actually creamy with smashed avocado; hot, but not incendiary.
I've tried to order a vegetarian burrito, but somehow was never able to get my wishes understood. That's OK. The stellar price, the simplicity of the ingredients, and the great salsa bar make this place a good stop on the side of the road.
