TORTAS!! MMM.. MMM... REFRESCAS!! ahhhh.. refreshing!!
Chicken Quesadilla's are good too!
I think this was cash only..
I haven't had their food, but their Mamey (pink-colored) drink is tasty!! The drink tastes very similar to the taste of a persimmon.
Decent fare, quite authentic, yet not the best.
The place itself is like a trip back to Mexico, at least while you're in the restaurant. To its misfortune, this place is in a huge strip mall with not much else to wander into; at least there's ample parking though.
As far as the food goes I recommend the "tortas" filled with cheese. Unfortunately the quality of the ingredients is not good. The fillings are un-original yet, authentic. The tacos, though edible, are not very good because of...again the quality of the ingredients. Meats are usually fatty and not very clean. Other than that the stews, sweet bread, and 'aguas frescas' are ok.
It is very hard to find decent authentic Mexican fare from chains such as this, yet 'EL Gallo Giro' manages to maintain an authentic atmosphere and menu, which though not as varied, suffices for a quick cheap fill.
When I drive to East LA, I have to stop in for an agua fresca at El Gallo Giro. This place has some fresh aguas like jamaica, tamarindo, jugo de platano (banana juice), jugo de pina (pineapple juice), and horchata (sweet rice water) - my personal favorite. El Gallo brews their horchata with whole cinnamon sticks, which makes a more flavorful agua. However, I find their horchata too sweet, but I order it anyway 'cuz I love the taste.
Gallo offers a decent bakery that sells pan dulce and birthday cakes. There pineapple empanadas & chocolate conchas are not bad. I pass on their Mexican food though. I find their food too greasy.
I appreciate their LARGE cup sizes for the agua frescas. I say, "SUPER SIZE ME!!!"
YES, awesome Tortas, but SO BIG... and you can get pan dulce in one stop. Don't forget the jamaica.
4 stars, because i don't speak spanish and i could never ever come here unless i had my friend with me to place my order; and i've only had one thing on their menu, a torta. I'm sure whatever meat you choose to go in your sandwich would be good, but i liked mine vegetarian. What I would really come here for was their fresh banana juice or on seldom occassions the fresh squeezed pineapple juice, my favorite. I moved, so I will probably never see this place again. =(
