11 reviews for El Cilantro
I was surprised how fresh and good the food was. They also have a good variety of salsas.
I wouldn't say it's the best MEX (Like Grandma's cooking) but I would say it's definitely safe and enjoyable to eat.
So I saw a flyer for a super taco special 2 tacos (fish, carnitas, potato, or 4 rolled tacos with rice n beans + a drink) for $4.60 and that was enough to stimulate my curiosity to check this new 24 hr place by my house. Jilberto's closes somtime in the early am and armando's is uninspired.
Walking into the place, I was first thinking that this taco shop looks like a cafe with it's super glossy wood tables and track lighting. I got scared that I wouldn't be getting the mexican food I've grown up on in the south bay.
I have to agree with the review below me that the portions are bigger than some of the other 24 taco places I've been to lately. While it seems like prices are being raised and portions are being cut everywhere else El Cilantro delivers an awesome value. Carne Asada fries had meat that wasn't too salty and greasey and totally reminded me of how they used to be when I was in highschool. Fish tacos weren't over done like other places and the rice n beans tasted fresher too.
I hope this place stays 24 hrs!
I would give this place 5 stars, but two things were amiss: The Flautas were not good at all (soft, mushy in the middle) almost as if they were frozen then nuked. The fajitas, while good, were made up of a bunch of scrap meat (I think pork, and some beef, possibly) and everything was just good, not great. I liked the huge tortilla instead of a few medium ones... and the Guac and Beans were good. Kudos on the salsa bar, I liked the green chile salsa the most (I'm guessing it's called guajillo or mole or something.. ?alguien ayudame porfavor?). I would eat here again, but I don't live in IB...
This place is great for a quick Mexican meal. Tacos are tasty with lots of meat. Homemade chips are awesome. Best "fast food" mexican I've found in San Diego so far.
Fantastic local Mexican eatery...AND it's open late night for the boozers!! Great people who work there and centrally located!
El Cilantro is great, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is one girl that works there that is REALLY rude. She doesn't listen to your order, interrupts you with "Something else?", and just doesn't have good customer service skills. The other girl, skinny with star tattoos on her wrist, is very nice and courteous though. The food comes out quick and they have an awesome salsa bar.
My favorite taqueria. The chilaquiles and carnitas plate are personal favorites. I've never been disappointed.
I love you guys! My favorite local taco shop. I always order the #4 combo, which is 2 beef tacos, beans, and rice. The portions are large and they don't skimp. They have a salsa bar with 4 different salsas. It usually also has carrots, green chilies and limes. Sometimes you will find cucumbers and radishes too. The girls (Erika and Ana) at the counter are always welcoming. Maybe because I eat there 2-3 times a week. What I can I say, this place is 3 blocks away. Sometimes there is a line but the cooks are really quick whether it's to go or dine in. This place is family owned and cares about their customers. Enjoy!
This place is the bomb. My friend just took me here the other day and I had one of the best fish tacos I have ever had. This taco is very close to the ones you get down in Baja. Its KILLER!!!!!!!! The salsa is also the best around. Great job and keep it up!!!!!
We were passing time driving aroun SD, while it rained off and on. I spotted a sign in the back of a pickup advertising a taqueria with Caldo de reyes. Soup sounded like a good idea considering the weather and sought it out. It's tucked back in a mall off of Palm.
It was about noon and the place was fairly full, locals and military. I figured there would be a wait for the food so I ordered some guacamole to snack on. Fifteen minutes later still no guac or food (soup, tacos). everything finally arrived one by one. The guac (a generous portion for the price) came with out chips. "Those cost extra". I've come to expect paying for chips with regular food orders, but expect chips to be included when paying extra for a dip. Sensing my surprise and to apoligize for the delay in delivering the food, the server went and got some. They apparently make their own chips there. They come out on the plate hot and lightly oily.
The food was good with good flavor and generous portions all around. The tacos were huge and the soup had good flavor with enough beef for two or more.
The delay in service was explained as having the night time cook working that day. He isn't as organized or as quick as the usual guy.
carne asada burritos & potato burritos are muy tasty! ooh and the chilaquiles(sp?) too! try them!
