Excellent service, food, and beer! I love this place. I tried several dishes and you can't go wrong! Definitely try this place!

I give this place 3 1/2 stars. They are a solid mexican option for those who want to stop in while shopping on Alpine. I don't have a lot to say other than I've always enjoyed my food and the service is, well, authentic. If you're looking for a place that is pretty standard with decent food, I say stop in.

I've seen their sign from E. Beltline a hundred times but always thought they looked like "just-another-crappy" Tex-Mex place. We stopped to get sandwiches at Quizno's one day, however, and saw through the glass that it was decorated somewhat nicely and decided to give it a try.
I had the a la carte Chile Relleno ($3.75) and a side of black beans ($2). The Chile Relleno was about the size of my fist and the bowl of beans was fairly huge. Also, the Dos Equis draft was (I think) 24 oz. for $4. So the prices are good!
Service was friendly but not overbearing, we were greeted as "amigos." The Chile Relleno was good, a fairly traditional Tex-Mex preparation (hand battered and stuffed with ground beef and cheese). The beans were great too, very similar to some I had while in Guadalajara, Mex.
Our second visit we got the same server, again greeted as "amigos." He was attentive and friendly - again - and I tried some tequila this trip (El Tesoro de Don Felipe, a fave) and their tequila prices are also very reasonable. I had the pork burritos with salsa verde and spanish rice. They were okay, but the pork was kind of dry and over-cooked. The sauce was delicious - jalapeno and cilantro with tomatillo - but just a hair spicy for the average eater, I'd say.
Their dishes are much more varied than Little Mexico (my fave GR Mexican spot) with several traditional entrees beyond Burritos, etc. I will definitely try them a few more times until I find my favorite dish there -

El Burrito serves fresh, authentic Mexican dishes with true homemade feel. The selection is huge and portions are hearty. Their food seems healthier than many Mexican restaurants as they don't drown things in cheese. Smaller portions are available. The food is delicious and service is friendly and charming.

The dishes are a little bit bland and the produce doesn't seem very fresh. However I'm waiting for a great mexican restaurant in the GR area.
I would love to be blown away by flavor when I eat mexican food because the flavors CAN be so good!
Maybe it'll improve. -
