A small joint with a side yard full of iron art - dinosaurs, horses, orangutans, mules, dolphins, etc etc etc. Apparently the artist was hired to make some for the town, and is also selling then through the restaurant. I kinda love iron art...
The gentleman working was really nice, despite our indecisiveness and changing our order quite a few times. We can be quite the annoying patrons!!
Though the cheeseburgers were just okay (there has to be a minus for the sesame seed bun) the carnitas taco's were super awesome! So good in-fact that we ordered a dozen to take with us back to camp even though we had packed more than enough food. The homemade jalapeno salsa was SOOO good and they served beer. And the prices were moderate ($5.25 for a burger, $1.50 a soft taco). Great little place.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Tucked in a small building next to a gas station, El Borrego is easy to miss. The diverse menu covers the standard Mexican specialties, including some seafood dishes plus some authentic selections like head and tongue tacos, as well as some Americana choices like cheeseburgers, ham sandwiches and chili cheese dogs. The dining areas are scattered around -- a few tables in two indoor rooms, and lots of seating outside with tables scattered around on the porch and the large sculpture garden outside.
The food is a bit bland, but edible with decent portions. The staff was quite affable, and amazingly prompt, considering that a crowd of gargantuan, corn-fed midwesterners showed up and made a huge line in front of us, but we still got our food in a reasonable amount of time.
In an episode that greatly amused me, a couple of out-of-towners came in and the guy asked "Hey, is there a place like a Starbucks that we could get coffee around here?"
The proprietor's face cracked into a smile, and he replied "You gotta be kidding me! There are no chain restaurants in Borrego Springs." He then politely directed the guy to a local breakfast joint. -

We've been going to Borrego Springs for years and only just found this place because of Yelp. We decided to try it out, and we loved it! The food was fresh, tasty and healthy (not to menion inexpensive), the "patio" (more of a yard, really) was a great place to sit and sip sangria and look at all the sculptures, and the owner, Carlos, was very nice. Definitely two thumbs-up!

Our kids loved the sculptures outside this small family-run Mexican restaurant in the heart of Borrego Springs. The food was delicious, the menu has classics and interesting dishes as well, especially for the very affordable prices. We will go back to this place next time we're out in the desert.
