hmmm. I was expecting the tasty power of Montezuma to destroy my tastebuds upon the first bite. He didn't. It was all just okay. I had to try the shrimp diablo, chile relleno, and the horchata. those will give you a good idea of how awesome or not a Mx place really is.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't horrible at all. Just needed more salt, spicier salsas, and better coating on the chile rellenos. Plus, the menu is somewhat confusing when you order a la carte vs dinners. We were overcharged by a whole meal, when I specifically ordered so I could just try the two things I wanted. That's an extra $10! I don't go to taco shops to spend normal amounts of dinner money... I will go back though, being that it is really close to my house. I'm a sucker for a huge cheap menu, and taco shops are notorious for having those.
To end on a high note, their beans were pretty good. Their horchata was some of the best I've had. All the staff were happy and had good service. That makes it worth going back.Listed in: Mexican Food. Es Todo.

My favorite burrito place anywhere! I walk in and the friendly cook starts my shrimp super burrito right away because he knows what I'm going to order. So delicious I'll drive all the way across town just for the best burrito ever.

This is the best option for Mexican food in the area. Of course, like all SF burrito places, they put too much crap in their burritos and tacos. Whatever happened to good old-fashioned meat burritos and tacos? Definitely better than that place across the street that opened recently (what's it called? Anyway, don't go there. Very flavorless.)
The reason I took away a star is because they'll be very rude to you if you come in as part of a mixed-race couple. Honestly. I didn't think it could happen in SF, but it did. Brings me back to my childhood days in good old "Little Texas" as I call it (Eastern California). -

I don't know why, but before or after my softball games on Saturday, I'm always craving messican food. Last time Eugy and I hit up a taco truck for some spicy pork tacos. This time, we stopped by El Azteca. We were in the neighborhood so this was our option for messican.
I had one al pastor taco w/ cheese, black beans, tomato, guac, and lettuce and a steak and prawn taco the same way. These things are HUGE!!! I needed to tackle both of them with a fork. They aren't shy with the meat or the toppings, so you can't really pick this thing up and eat it like a taco until you've eaten some off the top.
Both were DELICIOUS! The steak and prawn was definitely my favorite, but the al pastor taco was running in close 2nd.
Wash all that down with a Mango Jarritas. Delicioso. -

Their prawn burrito is pretty solid. Good quality prawns, good salsa, good beans, etc. It's a bit expensive, but it's very filling. For Mexican food outside of the mission, it is quite good. It's a neat, clean, store with friendly workers that speak good English.
It's not worth going way out of your way too, but if you're in the southwest part of the city it's definitely a good lunch option!Listed in: Silver Terrace and Portola

The only taqueria place I go around my work area and have the ability to communicate. NIce corner place with a huge selection of anything mexican. Just because of their steak and prawns quesadilla....I gain about 10 lbs around lunch time....comatose from 1pm to 4 pm. All I can say is....damn...that's one tasty quesadilla. It comes in burrito style as well.
This one time I decided to try out their taco....I was caught a little bit off guard. They really stack your meat choice with beans and salsa. Actually, I believe it's like 3 inches high of meat slapped onto a few tortillas and mixed wit beans and salsa with a slice of lime. Yummie.
They also have the cocaine coke...err...I mean...the mexican coke....tastes better than the ones in the can. Euge pointed out something to me today about the mexican coke...they use real sugar...instead of the "high-fructose syrup" method in the US.....
....yah....i think everyone is thinking what I'm thinking.....huh? why would u know.....oh nevermind...let's eat. -

When ever I get a craving for some delish mexiCAN food & i'm at work, I head here.
Prawn "super" tacos with spicy salsa & guac are fantastic. I've had the chicken too and its always moist. And they have three choices of beans!
Plenty of seating if you want to eat there, and the parking situation isn't bad. Somehow its pricier than it seems; 4 super tacos and 2 drinks is around $20, but its damn good! -

Mill Valley, CA
On Mondays, I get the cravings for Azteca or (Ghetto-burrito).
I get the same thing every Monday:
Super Vegetarian Burrito
Green Rice
Spicy salsa
Whole Beans
Everything, no sour cream
For here
Aqua fresca (lime)
The staff are always surprised for some reason. I have been coming here for years and they still treat me like a tourist.
The food is good- a bit salty and is very expensive for what you get. Which is odd, considering the location of this joint. Sort of like charging $10 for soap and $1.50 for beer at your local bodega. Probably why I will never be rich, I just can't think of brilliant ideas like that. Oh well.
Best part about this place is the consistency of the grill cook. Every time I go in there he is chopping some sort of meat and he is cooking shrimp.
I can hardly wait for Monday. Yum. Probably should change the name to crack-burrito. I need my fix. -

One of the best burritos in San Francisco. They ain't cheap, but go for the Steak and Prawn Super Burrito (approx. $9.00). It will be the best $9.00 burrito you've ever had. This place is out of the way, but if you are down on 3rd Street and hungry, check it out. All of the meats and other items are always good. The quesadillas are huge, and very popular.
I think you can have an inexpensive meal here, if you don't order prawns.
Be sure to not lean on the glass, or the security guard will give you a warning to step back. -

Oh Mexican food, how I adore thee!
I wish I was a poet because I would write a poem about El Azteca. It's a hole in the wall, but it's clean and has tasty food. Also, I love hot, hot, hot sauce and beware, when they say hot they mean business at this place (unlike at many others!). Service is friendly and with a smile, and you can even grab an insanely cheap beer to go with your food should the mood suit you.
Also, they tend to have the most selection of the taquerias in the area so I would suggest hitting this place up if you want something other than the usual fare.
Also, the downside - they close early. Why, oh why, do you close so early El Azteca? :( -

Great shrimp quesadilla!
Neighborhood fav. My co-workers go often and there has never been a complaint. -
Review from Jason B.
Memorable for the clean and friendly atmosphere, tortilla choices (five, including wheat), bean choices (three including black) and three options for chicken (unfortunately the green and the red sauce versions were both spicy). Avoidable for the slightly higher prices ($7 for a regular burrito), $0.60 surcharge for lettuce (I passed) and copious amounts of oil being poured on whatever meat was being cooked as I walked in.
You could do worse if you are in the area, but not worth venturing to the area to experience. -

Decent. I suppose for the area it's better than decent but I ordered a Bean, Rich and Cheese burrito and i got almost no cheese at all. I'd of given them a solid 3 stars but they skimped me on my cheese. You don't charge nearly 4 bucks for a burrito then heavily skimp out on a major ingredient. That's asking for a 1 star.
However, I'd be willing to come back here if I am ever in the area. Doesn't seem too likely but who knows?. My final verdict is not the best burrito but not the worst either. So ehh. -

We don't usually venture over here at night, but we were passing thru on the way from Mission Bay at sunset and since we are leaving in a week, we thought we'd better try this place, now or never. In the four years since we moved to this side of town, we occasionally drive down Third just to see how things are going....but I digress. Just as we turned onto Williams, about five squad cars with blue lights and sirens going converged on the intersection and then took off to parts southwest. We did not hear any gunshots, so we went ahead and parked the car and dined in, to the surprise of the line cooks. There was a couple sitting on the stools at the front window. but not wanting to push my luck, I picked a spot towards the back, away from the windows.
I had taquitos that were pretty bad, my husband had enchiladas that were okay, but the lime fresca was so good, I am giving them an extra star. I might even swing by for another one before we blow town.
FYI
This place is right on the 54 Felton Muni and the T-Third light rail, across Williams from a 24 hour Walgreens. The one time I took public transportation home from Mission Bay DURING THE DAY, I had to wait on this corner for a long time and the only other person waiting with me was a nun. There is no NextBus in these parts. Just as the bus finally came, about 20 people emerged from seemingly nowhere to board with us. Next time I will hang in El Azteca, sipping a lime fresca. -

thank you yelpers- without you i would have been hungry and grumpy.
I just started working in this neighborhood and was afraid that the only food available was McD's (blech), but thanks to you yelpers I found Azteca.
Decent burritos, nice service, $3.85 for a basic veg burrito, and I have to add an extra star for the green salsa.
I will say it again..
GREEN SALSA.
you have to ask for it special but it it so darn tasty, yum.
yippee for decent lunch places in a food wasteland! -

OK, being from So. Cal I am NOT a fan of "Mission Style" burritos but, this has got to be the worst of the worst.! There are other taqueria's in the mission that I can abide. This place ain't one of them. Their Carne Asada meat has absolutely NO FLAVOR, well if you consider shoe leather a flavor, then yes it's quite flavorful. As other reviewers have mentioned there's not a lot of choices out there & that's the only reason why I've been there more than once. It's way overpriced for such sub-par food I'll never go back. They really suck.

Just went to El Azteca for the first time and got take out. Everything is nice and clean with more selection than the average Taqueria. And from the wide selection, everything looks fresh and nice. It looks like a fine place to stay and eat (which was a nice surprize).
What I ordered was a little on the plain side, but I do plan to go back because although a little plain, it was quite fresh and nice. I brought home a Super Veggie Burrito and a Super nachos as well.
I'm fairly certain that the two counter ladies were talking about me and laughing at me (for my awkward ordering or off pronunciation perhaps) but what can I say - it was my first time and I was trying to figure out the options etc. They should keep that in check because you can lose a customer that way.
But I plan to try again... -
Review from Euge L.
should really be 3.5.
its hard to find anything tasty down here. the hardest thing about my work day is not waking up in the ass crack of dawn but rather figuring what to eat for lunch.
this place is tasty.
they gots messicans coke. (the best in my humble opinion)
the place is organized and CLEAN.
a bit pricey for what it is, but considering your other options aruond here, im damn lucky to have this place. -

My tortillas were a bit soggy in my spicey chicken tacos, I will probably go back to try another dish. The location might be a bit dangerous after dark. There really are no other taquerias in this hood.

On a whim, I ordered the chicken mole dinner plate here. That is some seriously good chicken. In addition, they give you such a large portion, it can barely be contained on the plate. Haven't gotten around to trying the burritos, which is what I usually go for in a taqueria, but I'm sure I will eventually (if I can ever get past ordering that yummy chicken mole).

One of my favorite places to grab a burrito. If they would change two things (serve fresh guacamole and except atm/credit cards)they would have my business all the time. Instead I drive over to glen park where they do those two things. Quality of meats and food are good but in recent visits I've noticed the meats being in "minced" conditions. If they are doing this to save on portions to customers, I'd say STOP. Pretty standard menu, clean location and yes I would go here after dark! Sheesh! Do you live in SF?!?!? The Bayview is no different from the mission and other SF locations. Anyway, my favorite besides the cute owner is the salsa. LOVE IT could eat it with a spoon! Besos!

Seriously awesome burritos in an unexpected location on the corner across from Walgreen's. The cleanliness, freshness and flavors at El Azteca are amazing. I think my vegetarian burrito was only $3.85, so one needn't spend a lot here either. Great authentic salsas made fresh daily as they should be. If you're in the neighborhood, El Azteca is definitely a great place your most excellent, tasty lunchtime Mexican burrito. The last 2 times I've come here, I bought an extra burrito to carry home for afternoon snack/dinner, they're just that good!

Best taqueria I've found in the 'hood yet. They have a surprising number of vegetarian options on the menu. They're not as cheap as the Mission places, but the food is pretty good.

Amazing chicken taco, fine looking meats in general, and looks very fresh. The guacamole is a little pale though and probably has sour cream in it, but overall, yum!

Not the best burrito I've ever had, but it was decent and the carne asada was really good. But my dad and my uncle think this place is the shit, and since its close to my uncle's place, I'll most likely be coming back here sometime soon.

stuffing my face right now with a veggie burrito from el azteca right now. seventeen years in SF, a lifetime in the bay area, and i've had lots of burritos. this one is top notch. add to that availability of liter mexi cokes and churros and i'm glad i moved my business down the block from this place! wonderful service, fantastic vegetarian options.
i just wish they had fish tacos! -

This taqueria is expensive for such mediocre taste. They do have lots of choices in their menu. You can never go wrong w/ a prawn burrito. Also note that this place only takes cash.

The steak and prawn burritto is the best thing on their menu. Sometimes it's oversalted, but still always delicious. I'm only giving them three stars because the way they ring up the "extras" on your burritto/tacos. I've found their staff inconsistent and once ended up spending close to $12.00 on a burritto.

Aztecas charges too much. With that said it is one of the best burritos I have had. Maybe Ever. The carnitas is my favorite. Most other places that have carnitas makes me chew on big pieces of fat. Sorry I am not interested in that. Their quesadilla suiza is messy and you will need a fork which makes it all the more fun to eat. $7+ for a burrito, but you do get two meals out of it so I guess it is not that bad. walking distance to me, not that I walk around in my neighborhood. Keep your head on a swivel out in HP. Neighborhood aside, I frequent this establishment and urge you to do the same.

Had an excellent carnitas burrito here, as good as most in the Mission (if priced a bit higher). Service was prompt and friendly, and the many fresh ingredients looked delicious; I had a hard time choosing what to order. Gets a good crowd at lunch time. I will definitely be back.

i love this place! i've been coming here since it opened. i was hesitant to try it but the owner lives right around the corner from me so i would know where to go if it made me sick!
the best thing they have on the menu is the steak & prawn quesadilla even tho i always end up ordering the baby burritos cuz they're just my size (=
even tho the ladies who work there HAVE ALWAYS/ALWAYS DO give me the stink eye, i still love it n it's my #1 taqueria pick. -

My co-workers and I go to El Azteca at least once a week. The burritos are very well-received (I am not a big burrito fan myself); I personally love the steak and shrimp quesadilla. The place is well organized, clean (that is relatively clean) with very friendly staff. One of the few decent places in that part of town.

me and my crew at Engine 25 eat here when we don't have time to cook lunch. the steak and shrimp quesadillas are real good, but a bit pricey. the salsa is fresh and delicious. I always get the quesadillas so I cant speak for the other stuff, but I bet its just as yummy. lunch time line is out the door. that should speak for itself.

Review from Paul P.
Oakland, CA
The Prawn and Steak quesadilla is worth dirving a bit out of my way. the prices are a bit high for the regular sized portions but if you care at all about the fact that they only partially cook the meat and then grill it up just for your dish and that the ingredients are all very fresh then it's worth it. If I'm even remotely near by at lunch time I go there, no question.
