We're from San Francisco, so we are foodies and know what good Mexican should taste like. Our In-Laws live in the area, so we've tried most Mexican places in the Carson Valley.
The food was ok, pretty bland. Ordered combo platter with taco, enchilada, and chimichanga. Taco was pretty blah, beef had not been tenderized or pulled properly. Enchilada was doable, but again the beef was chunks of meat. Really no flavor. Some simple spices would help here. Chimichanga was not fried at correct temp, thus was a limp/fried mess.
Beans and salsas were A+. Salsa's got some heat.
Overall, good to stop if your hungry, but don't expect a "hole in the wall" Mexican food hit with this place. Average. Sub-par in a city environment.
Service was good, but my menu needed a good wipe down. Apparently it tried the beans too. -

Nice big portions of food at a great price. Staff is above and beyond friendly. I usually place orders to go, and they are always fresh and waiting exactly on time. They will also make items that are not even on the menu, with no complaints at all!

This was more than I expected. Stopped for lunch while vacationing in the area. Great food, excellent service and the coldest beer I've had in a long time. Prices were moderate. I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

This was a unexpected find for me.. I had the Camerones La Planta (bacon wrapped shrimp), it was very good. The others must have more expensive foodie tastes because I liked the food! The free dessert special was unexpected and tasty! The building is small, the service was fast and food hot. Try it if you are in Gardenerville.. This cancels 6 snob reviews cause mrken says :-)

Although this place looks drab the food is really great. The service is nice, they come when needed and give you your refills on drinks or chips. Sometimes it's sporty but still good. Their food is not overpowering and the plates are large but the cost is worth what you get. The food is ready quickly whether or not you get it to eat in or to-go.

The best Mexican food I have tasted...
This local spot situated in a small town on Hwy 395 is a hidden gem. I passed by here only by chance when driving through town to get back from a snowboarding trip. If you are going up to Kirkwood or just driving through this little town of Gardnerville, stop and eat at El Aguila.
I had home cooked Menudo (soup with tripe) and a burrito topped with guac, sour cream, re-fried beans and cheese.
The re-fried beans are light in favor, not oily like the ones you find in the city. The rice was light and fluffy...everything tasted like someones' grandmother cooked it from scratch.
Love this place! Only wish they had something like this in the city.. -

After reading the other reviews I was really looking forward to some good mexican food. I was really disappointed.
I ordered a combination plate to get a good feel for the food. The combination was a Chile Relleno, Enchilada, and Beef Tostada. I specified chicken for the enchilada.
The tostada came as chicken. I had to flag down a server as they never bothered to come check after delivery. I told them the tostada on the #12 is supposed to be beef. They told me no it is whatever you specify. This was a short argument which in itself tells you something about the place. The menu never came out, but it does indeed specify beef. So she replace the tostada and on return practically threw the plate on the table.
So the service was AWFUL on that alone I would not return,
But the food wasn't even any good at all. If you like melted cheese you will like the Relleno. The enchilada was tasteless chicken in an tortilla with sauce that was bland.
Oh an the tostada... I wish I had never said anything. The flavor of the ground beef is gross. -

Maya and Alice have pretty much said it all, but I wanted to add my vote, too.
I'm not sure what the style is, but it's the kinda place where you get a big, hot plate filled with enchiladas/tamales/tacos/etc. plus a reasonable portion of good rice and (somewhat simple and plain, but good) refried beans. The sauces tend to spill over into the rice and beans, and it becomes one delicious blurr of Americanized Mexican food that can be sooo darn satisfying.
Also, as others have mentioned, the fresh salsa and chips and small dish of refried beans BEFORE dinner PLUS the little fried tortilla cinnamon, honey, whipped cream treat AFTER dinner is just right.
When the weather is pleasant, the patio is a wonderful place to eat.
With tax and tip, this place usually runs about $15/person (without any alcholic drinks), but if you're really careful, you can get this down to around $10-$12/person! -

Dammit! I thought for SURE I would be the first one to review this place. Oh well, I'm just happy to give them their props. For a Mex restaurant in the middle of nowhere (at least it felt that way to me), this place is damn frikkin good. They call everyone "amigo." When your chips and salsa arrive, they also thrown down some yummy refried beans to dip into as well. And at the end of the meal, they give you these awesome fried cinnamon crispies. Classy touch, amigos! Everything we had was really quality and the portions are unbelievable. There are a lot of Mex spots in the area. So, do me a favor. Eat here so the next time I stumble into Gardnerville, I've got a great Mex place to eat at. Oh yeah, one more thing. Horachata isn't on the menu, but they've got it. Just ask!

I only ever order the camarones diabla, it's the best! Drinks are always good, service is awesome, my family likes everything else on the menu too. Pricing is reasonable. Try it once and you'll be back.

Sorry Northern Nevadans that love this place. Its so-so Mexican American food that is bland. Maybe they are afraid your palletes cant take the real thing. Its a shame, when I worked in Carson valley and craved Mexican food I had to wait untill I was in Reno or Central California.

Great Mexican Food! Great Service, price, and the Sopapillas are to die for (Fried Cinnamon/honey/whipped creme tortilla). Huge portions! Friendly owners. Funky old building/small but I've never had to wait too long for dinner. Very busy on weekends. This one is better food than the one they own in Carson City, in my opinion.
